Creator of Peeple, App That Lets You Rate Other People, Sets Record Straight About Product

Do you want to know what strangers, neighbors and friends really think of you? Or what if you could rate people you like or dislike for the rest of the world to see? A new app called Peeple, slated to launch later this year, will let you do just that. Originally designed to let others rate you in the areas of personal, professional and romance — similar to the way other apps rate businesses — Peeple is making headlines and causing controversy for what some say is its potential to lead to online harassment and bullying — or even ruin lives.

Peeple’s co-creator, Julia Cordray, says, in part, that the media has overreacted to what the app actually will do, and sits down to set the record straight on Dr. Phil.

“What is it that people misunderstand about this?” Dr. Phil asks.

“With the feedback, we’ve made some really great movements toward more positivity for our app,” Cordray says. “You are not anonymous on our app, you cannot have your profile started by anybody else. You have 100 percent opt-in ability. We really want to make sure that you have full control over what goes live on our app.”

Watch the video above as Dr. Phil asks Cordray how it could have never occurred to her or her investors that this app could ruin lives. “Seriously, you went to your VCs to raise money, and nobody around the conference table said, ‘What about cyberbullying?’” he asks.

“No, that was never anybody’s concern. So you have to imagine how surprised all of us were,” she replies. “We never would intend harm with a product or app. That’s just not who we are. I didn’t really anticipate this negative attention.”

Cordray’s entire interview airs on Friday’s episode of Dr. Phil.

Coming Out Advice From Two Straight Guys

Life with brothers can be tough at times. One minute you’re eating Pop-Tarts for breakfast and the next you’re beating each other with backpacks full of hardcover books. It’s a dynamic relationship that turns more than a few parents’ hair grey. It can also be a bond that we develop with our male peers, especially if there isn’t a genetically-related brother to be found. In my case, there is a complication in these relationships though.

I am gay.

For most of my short life I was not — at least not publicly. My brother and all of my close guy friends were unaware of this until relatively recently, which means at least some part of me was lying to them for years, if not decades.

Many gay and bisexual men struggle to come out to their closest male companions not only because they fear rejection, but even more so because they fear the reaction to the lie they have been telling. I have had conversations with numerous gay and bi men who, even as adults, still feel this way and have not been able to come out to their brothers or friends.

As the Founder of ComingOut.Space, I get to read a lot of coming out stories and have had the chance to learn about the experiences of many others. To learn more about the impact my own coming out had on two of my closest male friends, my younger brother and a lifelong friend, I sent them a few questions to better understand their reactions. The coming out process happened years ago, so both have had more than enough time to reflect on their thoughts and our relationships.

1) Did you feel betrayed when you found out that I was gay, knowing that this was a secret I had been keeping for years?

My friend replied,

No. For me, it was easy to understand that transparency was difficult with that subject and that you had to be ready to come out. I don’t really know how to expand on it further because it is that clear cut. I just didn’t feel that way. I remember questioning why I wasn’t the first friend you told, and wondered why you told people who seemingly you were not that close to, but that makes a lot more sense to me in retrospect.

My brother replied essentially the same thing. In truth, I came out first to friends I hadn’t known as long and who I was more confident would accept me. My logic was that I needed to build up my confidence in low-risk situations before I could tell the people who meant the most to me. I think, in the end, it was the right decision.

2) How, if at all, do you think our relationships would have been different if I had been honest sooner. Really think about this one. Given that we grew up in small town, would you have been ok with it if I had told you while I was still in high school? You might want the answer to be yes, but is that true?

To this, both my brother and friend replied that they wished, for my own happiness, that I could have come out much sooner. However they both admitted that if I had come out when we were younger, they would not have handled the situation the same way. My friend wrote,

I think that I wish you would have come out sooner, but maybe not in high school, because I question what my reaction would have been. I don’t know that the course of our ultimate friendship would have been altered, but I think it may have taken me some time to come around to the idea in high school.

My brother shared that sentiment, but also added,

I had no idea this was something that was weighing on your mind so heavily. After you came out, I felt as though a weight had been lifted from your shoulders. Our relationship has become better over the years and I believe part of that has to do with the time at which you chose to come out.

Do I think their response means young men need to keep their sexuality a secret until their loved ones have matured? Definitely not. Do I think that coming out at a younger age presents a different set of challenges? Absolutely. When to come out is an extremely personal decision, but it is an interesting idea to think about the relative success of a coming out based on timing.

3) Do you have advice for gay guys who are struggling to come out or to guys who have to deal with their brother/friend coming out?

In a resounding word of encouragement, both my brother and friend answered this question by first saying that being honest with yourself is of the utmost importance. Either directly or indirectly, they both touched on an important issue. When I was still in the closet, I was a different version of myself. I wasn’t happy. I wasn’t always kind. Coming out helped me become the best version of myself and therefor made it possible for our relationships to progress. In retrospect, all three of us know this and are happy it happened.

To men whose brother or friend has just come out to them, my brother had this to say:

Try to understand what is going on with your brother or friend. If you are upset it is okay to show your emotions, but remember that coming out is not an easy thing to do for anyone. In my eyes the best thing that you can do is to be a good listener. The feelings and words of someone who is coming out have been thought about time and time again. Give them space and listen to what they have to say. Lastly, if nothing else, just be supportive of your family members through any impactful situation that they may go through. Family is for support and love not tearing each other down.

The Dating Market Might Actually Be Worse For Educated Straight Women

After journalist Jon Birger entered his 30s, he began to notice a pattern in his social circle: Most of the men he knew were married or in a relationship and most of the women he knew were single and having a hard time dating. These women had “everything going for them,” he told The Huffington Post, yet they either couldn’t get dates or were stuck dealing with men who toyed with them.

Birger became curious about his anecdotal experience and wanted to see if there were statistics to back up what his single female friends were going through — and there were. He believes that the lopsided dating scene in large U.S. cities like New York all comes down to a gender ratio which favors men. In the U.S. as a whole, men and women are split about 50/50, but that ratio shifts when you look at the number of college graduates by gender: Women between 25 and 34 are 21 percent more likely than men to be college graduates, according to 2013 data.

In this environment, educated heterosexual women who wish to date men who also graduated college must navigate a playing field in which guys have significantly more dating prospects, a phenomenon Birger calls the “man deficit.” Birger’s new book Date-onomics centers around this very concept, and offers a not-so-romantic aerial view of the contemporary dating landscape.

“A lot of the women who I talked to about this felt like they must be doing something wrong or it must be their fault,” he said. “I think, for at least some of them, it was reassuring to know that it wasn’t just in their heads.”

In conversation with The Huffington Post, Birger explained exactly how the “man deficit” plays out, who has better odds in the dating pool and what women might want to do once they understand the demographics:

Your theory centers around the concept of a “man deficit.” What exactly does that mean?

Women have been graduating from college at a higher rate than men going back to the early ‘80s, and at a much higher rate than men going back to the ‘90s. These college graduation rates and gender ratios have spilled over into the post-college dating market. Of course, none of this would matter if we were all more open-minded about who we were willing to date and marry — both college-educated men and women have become less willing to date and marry non-college-educated people.

[In this environment], men take advantage. A core part of my argument is that the college and post-college hookup culture is to a large extent a product of these gender ratios. There’s a lot of social science on this, and it all points to the ideas that men delay marriage and play the field when women are in oversupply. When it’s the opposite, the culture is more likely to emphasize courtship and romance.

In your opinion, has online dating affected this dynamic?
I’m probably going to be in the minority in this argument, but my point of view is that it doesn’t really matter. I know everybody thinks Tinder is causing the hookup culture, but the reality is that there’s actually a history of blaming new technologies for young people having more sex.

I know everybody thinks Tinder is causing the hookup culture, but … I think stuff like Tinder are symptoms, not the cause.

Honestly, a lot of the guys I interviewed who you’d probably think are the most schmuck-y, so to speak, were doing it the old-fashioned way. They were going up to pretty women in bars and buying them drinks. They didn’t have their heads in their phones. This is a lofty way of me saying that I think stuff like Tinder are symptoms, not the cause.

You explain how, unlike women of other races, Asian-American women are immune to the man deficit. Why do you think that is?

I was completely confused by that. Initially, I wanted to see what groups were more or less affected by the man deficit. I assumed, since Asians are more likely to be college-educated than non-Asians, I’d write about Asian women and explore how vulnerable they are to the man deficit because so many of them are college-educated. But it turns out that I was 100 percent wrong. If you look at the census data, Asian women marry at a much higher rate than non-Asian women.

I couldn’t figure out why, though. I was talking to one of my Asian friends, and she said, “It’s funny — when I was in high school, nobody wanted to date the Asian girl, but something happened in the ‘90s where suddenly everybody wanted to date the Asian girl.” For her, the cultural touchstone of this was that “Seinfeld” episode [in which Jerry is disappointed that his date isn’t Chinese]. In the book, I try to stay away from the “why” part.

But there are studies out there showing that men in general perceive Asian women as most attractive. Then there was this terrific data from OKCupid that tracked message response rates for people of different races. The takeaway was that Asian-American women have the highest response rates. This even held true among lesbians.

You generally stayed away from giving advice in the book, but you wrote that college-educated women who want to marry college-educated men are better off marrying “Mr. Perfectly Acceptable,” rather than holding out until 40 for Mr. Right. Can you explain what you mean by that?

I want to preface this by saying that I totally get that not everybody prioritizes marriage over career. Even for people who want to get married, it may not be their highest priority in life. Really, all I’m doing is trying to help people make informed decisions. A woman who puts an extremely high priority on getting married should know that every year you’re in the dating market, the numbers get worse for you.

A woman who puts an extremely high priority in getting married should know that every year you’re in the dating market, the numbers get worse for you.

I liken it to musical chairs. In the first round of musical chairs, really only the kid who isn’t paying attention doesn’t get a chair. But by the last round, you have a 50 percent chance of losing. In every successive round of the game, the odds of being left out increase.

This is also what happens in dating. If you start out in a dating pool of 140 women and 100 men, which is probably not unlike what young women in New York are staring at, that starts out as a 1.4 to one ratio. Once half of the women in this dating pool get married — so 70 women marry 70 men — the ratio among the remaining singles becomes greater than two to one. If you’re on the wrong end of the gender ratio — like college-educated women in general — every year you hold out, the dating market is going to be statistically more challenging.”

Numbers aside, do you think people are able to think in these terms? How does one know who is “Mr. Perfectly Acceptable”?
I’m an old married guy — I’m 46 and have been married for 20 plus years. If you talk to people who have been married for a long time, they’ll tell you there’s an element of compromise in all marriages, in all successful marriages. Sometimes the compromise is part of the fun. It would be boring if you were 100 percent perfectly compatible I think, and maybe others would disagree. There’s always a level of compromise in a marriage, no matter what the situation.

You argue that ultimatums can help women in this type of environment. How so?
In every other part of life — in business and politics — everybody understands the power of the ultimatum. But for some reason, people resist it when it comes to romance. The reality is that an ultimatum creates artificial scarcity in an otherwise abundant marketplace. It makes you want more of what you perceive you may lose.

One of these truisms that you hear in business is that you should never make a decision until you absolutely have to. If you’re a single 35-year-old man in Miami, Chicago or New York, every year the dating market becomes a little bit better for you. Why make a decision about one woman now when you can keep her as an option and continue exploring the market? I feel that the ultimatum is a way to push back against the male desire not to make a decision any sooner than he had to.

I feel that the ultimatum is a way to push back against the male desire not to make a decision any sooner than he had to.

You want it to happen naturally and organically, obviously. I get that and I get that what I’m saying is highly non-romantic, but I’m making an argument about what I think works, rather than what makes for the best love story.

How do you recommend that women approach their dating lives in such a lopsided market?
I’m going to preface this with: I’m not a dating coach — I’m a middle-aged guy and I’m not telling people how to live their lives. I’m just a believer in informed choices.

All things being equal, if you’re just starting out your career and you have one job offer in Manhattan and another job offer in Silicon Valley or San Jose, and you’re on the fence between the two jobs and you’re a monogamy- or marriage-minded heterosexual, my suggestion would be to put these gender ratios on your list of things to consider. Cities like Seattle or Silicon Valley or San Francisco or Denver have less lopsided or even male-skewed gender ratios among college grads, so the dating environment is going to be more woman-friendly.

At the same time, I totally get that a 45-year-old woman is not going to pick up her entire life and leave everything behind to go move to Denver. I realize that that’s not a realistic suggestion for some people.

So what would you tell women who aren’t willing to pick up and move?
If they’re online dating in a big city, one thing they could consider is to include the suburbs in their searches. I know it sounds counterintuitive, because it’s easy to think that all of the guys in the suburbs are going to be married. But in fact, generally speaking, the gender ratios among single college grads are less lopsided in the suburbs than they are in big cities.

Scarface “Steer,” Method Man “Straight Gutta,” & More | Daily Visuals 8.24.15

This past weekend saw a few of the game’s OG’s come out to school the youth on how this Hip-Hop thing used to be done.

With his twelth studio LP, Deep Rooted just a few weeks away from hitting the block, Scarface releases visuals for the thought provoking cut “Steer” where the former Geto Boy uses black and white scenery to remind us that most of the time living the fast life will only lead to you living your life on the run.

Meanwhile Method Man reunites with his former high flying co-pilot, Redman and Wu-Tang affiliates Streetlife and Hanz On to bring back that gritty concrete jungle music that the streets have been missing on “Straight Gutta” off of Method Man’s recently released LP, The Meth Lab.

Straight Outta Compton Still No. 1, Crosses $115M Mark

A week full of controversy and media frenzy was enough to generate a buzz for Straight Outta Compton to reign supreme at the box office yet again, giving the N.W.A biopic a grand total of $ 115.7 million in ticket sales.

“It is the movie of the moment, the movie everyone is talking about. Thank goodness for Straight Outta Compton because we definitely need that boost,” says Rentrak senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian tells USA TODAY.

The Universal Pictures-helmed filmed, opened up to $ 60.2 million during its opening weekend, exceeding all expectations on its $ 29 million production budgets.

Jeff Bock, senior box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations, offered up reasoning behind the Hip-Hop film’s success saying, “”Heres a film that was specifically catering toward an African-American audience, and it broke through those boundaries that first weekend and continues to do so. That’s a great story.”

Straight Outta Compton Cast On Inspiring Dr. Dre’s New Album

The cinematic aspects of the movie as well as casting jobs for particularly Ice Cube (O’Shea Jackson, Jr.) and Eazy-E (Jason Mitchell) have garnered rave reviews from fans and critics alike. Still, not everyone has been up in arms about Straight Outta Compton’s success. There has been numerous reports about Dr. Dre’s assault against journalist Dee Barnes being a glaring omission from the film, prompting the legendary producer himself to release an apology statement to her and several other victims.

Go see Straight Outta Compton if you have yet to done so.

News in Brief: New Pre-Sauced Napkins Can Be Thrown Away Straight From Package

CINCINNATI—Describing it as a major time-saver over traditional napkins, Procter & Gamble announced Thursday the release of its new Bounty pre-sauced napkins, which have been expressly designed to be removed from the package and immediately thrown into the trash. “With this new innovation, we’ve cut out all the extra steps between procuring a napkin and then crumpling it up and discarding it,” said the company’s director of marketing, Chase Henderson, explaining that the ready-soiled paper goods completely eliminate the need to first spill something and then wipe it up. “For our initial rollout, the napkins will come partially saturated in your choice of chili, ranch dressing, or spaghetti sauce. Down the road, we’re hoping to introduce napkins that are already wadded up into a big, messy clump, so customers can simply place the entire 200-count package in the garbage all at once.” Henderson added that the …

Arrested Development’s Lead Singer Speech Shares Deep Thoughts On “Straight Outta Compton”

“I applaud Ice Cube, Gary F Gray & Dr. Dre because they know how to tell a great story! The accurate portrayal of a Hip Hop producer’s heart…. wanting to make something special…well done. The vicious sharks that swim in music industry waters…greatly exposed. The acting, promotion and soundtrack… superb! In a country where excellence in black film on the big screen isn’t seen enough, it’s proudly exhibited here.

But from the perspective of the ancestors, they got some explaining to do. Centuries of struggle by our men, women and children who were thoroughly desolate with only one hope. The hope that through their perseverance, future generations would have it better than they did. Many died for that very reason.
That’s the African-American legacy.

It was just two weeks ago, we all were discussing how soiled America still is from the horrors of slavery and the following systematic racism.

Blacks for hundreds of years purposely portrayed in every advertisement, news article, play, TV show and movie as dangerous, vile, uncaring, simple, roguish brutes, with intelligence a tad higher than a monkey. Year after year, decade after decade, century after century… And here we are today – as white trigger happy cops shoot blacks. It doesn’t matter if they’re unarmed, cuz in the minds of so many, blacks are always armed with centuries of dangerous propaganda. And a lie can run around the world twice before truth can get her shoes on!

And in comes Hollywood pushing yet ANOTHER movie with that same ole narrative… “Straight Outta Compton!” With the convenient subtitle – “The worlds most dangerous group.”

Is that literal or it’s figurative? None of them came from the most dangerous of street life but Easy E. right? I often hear that they’re dangerous because of Cube’s defiant lyrics & fierce determination to speak “truth” to power. Ummm, that sounds honorable.

But I’m sure I can come up with a few more suggestions more appropriate than NWA. The Black Panthers for instance might be better suited for such an honor. With fierce determination they defied an entire system at risk of their very lives! They REALLY fought for justice and most paid the ultimate price. An epic bio pic that shows how these brave young men and women organized change for all races and genders, showing true devotion mixed with legal prowess… that’s a film suggestion! And can I get a witness that NWA’s “F** the Police” is only the prevailing anti-police brutality anthem BECAUSE the music industry championed it. It didn’t take the FBI long at all to see that NWA was ultimately a harmless group because their other songs & political savvy was thoroughly misguided and non-directional. As opposed to the earlier & less popular “F** the Pigs” that the Black Panthers often shouted as they persevered through police harassment as actual freedom fighters, not as drug dealers and pretend thugs. Historically there were activists that started as thugs but TRANSFORMED into purposeful revolutionaries.

I’ve heard some say, the title “most dangerous” is as far as MUSICAL groups are concerned…. Ummm wouldn’t PUBLIC ENEMY better fit that definition? But see a movie like that would simply be too dangerous, it might cause people to do more than ooo and aaah over the financial success of a music producer & rapper who made nice movies and headphones. It might cause REAL change.

NWA may be the most dangerous, but not because they fought against a racist and oppressive system… but because they were effective ambassadors of that very system! I like to call it white supremacy on wax! Who else could have done such a great job at spreading the age old message that blacks are morally sub-human? Many things white supremacists say about blacks is what NWA confirms in their most popular songs. And yes, in 2015 Twitter is going nuts praising the film and much of the hiphop world is bowing down to NWA as heroes in the genre. But I applaud a good number of blacks that “don’t believe the hype”!

Bio pics about rap artists are few and far between, but take notice to WHICH rap movies Hollywood green lights for major motion picture release? And have you ever thought about WHY these particular movies?

Biggie’s Notorious, Eminem’s 8 Mile, 50 Cent’s Get Rich or Die Trying and NWA’s Straight Outta Compton! Most of which come straight outta Jimmy Iovine’s & Dre’s storehouse of thuggery, and celebrate the “American Dream” thru gritty accounts of drug deals, crack addicted communities, strip clubs, friends that deceive each other and gun battles gone wrong. And then the inevitable transformation from rags to riches. As they live happily ever after (in their death though). Oh yeah, Biggie was about right, that if you’re black…you’re nobody til somebody kills you!

To quote Public Enemy… “Burn Hollywood Burn!” They’re pretty much about money and judging by this past weekends ticket sales… THEY’RE WINNING! Stay tuned for a Tupac, Ice T and whomever else da cap fits bio pic for us all to swoon over!

Feed us our illusions, Hollywood has no skin in the game, it’s just money to them. But don’t we as blacks literally have skin in the game?

It’s our SKIN that signals brainwashed cops to pull us over just because we didn’t use a turn signal. Or blow our brains out for trying to start our car while being questioned. Or get choked to death, spines snapped, or just walking home wearing a hoodie.

BUT SOMEBODY BLACK KEEPS PROUDLY DELIVERING THESE MOVIES TO HOLLYWOOD.

There’s gotta be a point where we WEIGH the pains we feel from years of being mis-represented against the joy we feel seeing another black thug soliloquy on the big screen! The pain lasts for years, the joy last 2 and a half hours. You do the math.

There’s gotta be a breaking point when we make a critical decision. Directionless expression or real freedom? I know, I know… no one screams when Scorsese does a gangster film, why pick on rappers? Because Jewish people aren’t making these movies WHILE simultaneously getting shot down in the streets by their own kind, arrested in astronomical rates and their rappers literally getting assassinated like they were in a Middle East war zone!

When is enough… ENOUGH!?

Consciousness didn’t start with NWA, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar’s “To Pimp a Butterfly”, nor ‪#‎blacklivesmatter‬.

It’s been in full effect since slavery and we must keep our eyes on the prize to reach the finish line!
On the big screen, these rappers are portrayed as bigger than life heroes and even somehow “freedom fighters”! But TRUE heroes like Julian Bond, Garvey, Harriet & Parks deserve a bio pic, because they served US all! But would we support it?

It NEVER was enough to have a conscious song or two on an otherwise “white supremacist” gangsta record. It’s not enough to have things “go in cycles”… (people say that to me all the time about music)
It’s about standing on the shoulders of those that stood before us until we get out from the ditch that hides our humanity!

Our values are so backwards that fathers, mothers, educators, intellectuals & activists don’t fill today’s memes and murals. Instead it’s Tupac, Biggie, NWA and maybe a Jay-Z. The murals you see painted in the ghettos, (I’ve even seen em in the outskirts of Africa!) Memes of these rappers floating around on the Internet and interviews at the end of albums with their “prophetic” words. 3D holograms of them in front of wooing crowds. Supposed martyrs packaged and shrink wrapped in a CD. “Heroes” of the people – celebrated, applauded, jailed and assassinated, with a level of admiration that you’d think they died because of political resistance or activism, but no. It’s simply a petty beef or a record executive hungry for more money.

We have so lost our way, that we celebrate their temporary success – in lieu of our own lasting success.

Behind the riches of every Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Easy E. or Suge Knight are quiet little Jewish & White guys in polo shirts that are even richer than them.

They play golf and listen to Bach while they count their money. Meanwhile we wallow in these decadent, century old stereotypical, blaxploitation flicks and albums, their kids fly in private jets and vacation in Belize. Our kids suffer just walking to school.

Yes, Straight Outta Compton is very good and yes, these men have immense talent, but Italian mafioso refused to sell crack to their own communities. They insisted on separating their families from their illegal business.

We sell this “crack music” to our little kids and we infest the whole world with it!
It is NOT just entertainment. We are getting killed in real life. We influence Africa, South America and everywhere there’s poor people that need inspiration. It has never been simple entertainment and it has far out reached the block…. it’s racist propaganda. And it hurts the soul of humanity!

And by the way ITS NOT HONEST, it’s not what we see in the hood. It’s an embellishment of it, it’s “reality” on steroids, it’s someones story on performance enhancers! And the things that destroy these communities has become a Satanic virus, packaged and shipped out to every other community to infect those that were previously healthy.

That’s my problem with NWA – not the music (it’s brilliant) NWA endorsed the worse traits of the hood, promoted these traits and to justify their lust for fame they revised their purpose claiming it’s a noble freedom of speech movement.

And many have bought that revisionist history, poured it in our glasses & ummm that kool aid taste sweet! White supremacy is happy, blacks got our thug heroes and the world keeps on turning.
So, sit and eat your popcorn, sip a Coke, enjoy a well-deserved break from lifes stress.
I know I did. I also know I made Ice Cube, Dr. Dre Gary Gray and a host of white dudes a bit richer! I’m alright with that. May God bless em.

But even as I’m entertained by the film, I know that unless we change our dynamics and moral infrastructure as black people, WE really are the entertainment. The silly blacks that can’t realize the difference between an Arnold Schwarzenegger fiction and a propaganda missile aimed at the very demise of our freedom, dignity and culture.

GIL scott was right….The revolution will not be televised it will be screened in a theater near you.
Two thumbs up.”

Zaki’s Review: Straight Outta Compton

The first time I heard of N.W.A. was in summer of 1989. I was watching a news story with folks breathlessly bemoaning a new kind of music that used salty language and exhorted listeners to commit violence against police. I didn’t think much of that moment at the time, partly because I didn’t listen to rap, and partly because I was ten. But as I watched Straight Outta Compton, the engrossing biopic from director F. Gary Gray (The Negotiator) depicting N.W.A.’s rapid rise, sudden fall, and eventual redemption, I couldn’t help but imagine ten-year old Zaki sitting in front of that broadcast somewhere in the world of the movie, little knowing the history he was watching unfold.

Straight Outta Compton follows the usual tropes of similar music group bios (the “Be Sharps” template, as I call it), but it manages to be singularly immersive thanks to its potent mix of propulsive music, potent social commentary, and powerful performances by an engaging casts of newcomers. The story’s narrative begins in 1986 as we’re first introduced to the trio of Eric “Eazy-E” Wright (Jason Mitchell), Andre “Dr. Dre” Young (Corey Hawkins), and O’Shea “Ice Cube” Jackson (played by his own son, O’Shea Jackson Jr.). All three are born and raised in the poverty-stricken streets of Compton, CA, but nurture dreams of making their mark through music.

Calling themselves N.W.A. (for “N****s With Attitude”), with Jackson writing, Young mixing, and Wright on vocals, they put out “Straight Outta Compton,” an album of “real rap” reflecting their own hardscrabble upbringing. After garnering the interest of promoter Jerry Heller (Paul Giamatti), the group, which includes MC Ren (played by Aldis Hodge) and DJ Yella (Neil Brown Jr.), takes the country by storm, with their signature hit “F*** Tha Police” generating headlines, acclaim, and controversy in equal measure. As the ’80s turn into the ’90s, it isn’t long before trouble rears its head, with Heller’s control of the group’s money driving a wedge between Wright and his colleagues.

What follows — anger, heartbreak, and loss — plays out against the backdrop of the Rodney King beating and the subsequent riots, and is made all the more gripping by the knowledge that it’s real. N.W.A.’s original run was surprisingly brief, with the group parting ways in 1991, but what they accomplished during that time still resonates nearly a quarter-century after their split, and probably the best feature of Straight Outta Compton is how its palette reflects the size and scale the social changes they laid the groundwork for. Not only in terms of hastening a conversation about the merits of rap (the film intercuts archival footage of Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings subtly tsk-tsk’ing the rising popularity of the genre), but also a broader discussion about racial resentment, and the platform rap offered to express it.

The ultimate measure of N.W.A.’s lasting impact is in how accepted the changes they ushered in have become. Eazy-E was lionized as a trailblazer upon his death in 1995. Today Dr. Dre is one of the most respected elder statesmen of hip-hop. And Ice Cube is probably more known to a sizable chunk of this movie’s audience for for playing the police than flipping them the middle finger. As has happened countless times throughout history, the revolutionaries of yesterday have become the establishmentarians of today. And while the film does depict this transition (we see Cube writing his seminal hit movie Friday), it does largely hopscotch over the misogyny that’s just as much a hallmark of gangsta rap (songs like “A Bitch is a Bitch” and “One Less Bitch”).

Given that Dre and Cube both served as producers (along with Eazy-E’s widow), I suppose it’s understandable that both skate through the proceedings with their reputations relatively unscathed (no mention, for example, of a 1991 incident where Young was accused of beating a female journalist). Instead, the lion’s share of blame for the group’s dissolution falls on Eazy and Heller. That said, I do have to give credit to how the script (by Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berloff) doesn’t settle for making Heller the heavy. Thanks to the always-dependable Giamatti, he’s given shades of complexity, portrayed as someone who not only believes in the group, but also stands up for them and supports them in the face of record company rejection and police intimidation.

Of the core trio of actors, all three deliver. While’s Jackson relative newness to acting is evident at times, he has an undeniable screen presence that, coupled with his uncanny resemblance to his pop, manages to do a lot of the lifting. I fully expect we’ll be hearing a lot from him, Hawkins, and Mitchell in the years to come. Just like “Straight Outta Compton” the album, Straight Outta Compton the film arrives at a nexus moment of social unrest and racial violence, and when viewed through that prism, it becomes more than just your standard music biopic. Rather, it’s a beacon marking the birth of a social movement, and in its own way it’s just as powerful a statement as Ava Duvernay’s Selma was last year. A

This Straight Christian Man Spent A Year Pretending To Be Gay — And This Is What He Learned

This sure is one literal interpretation of the expression “walking a mile in someone else’s shoes.”

In 2012, we brought you the story of Timothy Kurek, a straight, Christian man who “came out” to his family, friends and church community and “lived as a gay man” for a year in order to better empathize with the life and struggles of queer people.

While this is, as a whole, an extremely problematic enterprise, Kurek seems to have learned quite a bit during his year navigating the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in Nashville, Tennessee. Approximately three years following the end of his experiment, he gave a Tedx Talk discussing his experiences.

Kurek tells the audience that he decided to embark on this journey after a young lesbian told him that she had come out and been disowned by her family. He initially thought it was his “job to straighten her out, to fix her. It was my job to share those six passages in the Bible I’d always been taught condemn homosexuality.”

But then, upon further reflection, he came to consider that these feelings came from a different place.

“Maybe that voice inside my head that told me to do anything other than be there for her in her pain… maybe that voice wasn’t God. Maybe that voice was the result of two decades spent in a hyper-conservative religious bubble.”

It was then that he decided to “come out” as a gay man to his family and friends and experience the ramifications of that choice.

Watch the Tedx Talk above to hear more of Kurek’s story and what happened that year.

EXCLUSIVE: Jon Connor Talks ‘Compton’ Studio Sessions with Dr. Dre, the ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Movie, and Getting Signed to Aftermath

On Tuesday, August 11, AllHipHop.com had the wonderful opportunity to speak with Aftermath recording artist (and AHH Breeding Ground alumni), Jon Connor.  The Flint, Michigan, native’s skills and tireless dedication to his craft have really been paying off as late.  Not only did he sign with the legendary Dr. Dre, but he also made two outstanding contributions to Dre’s Compton offering.connor-dre

During our conversation, Connor, among other things, broke down what its like working with one of the best producers to ever do it, shared memories of being on the set for Straight Outta Compton, and hinted that he has more dope music on the way.

One of the things he said to me while wrapping up was, “At the end of the day, I’m a fan of Hip-Hop just like everybody else.  I’m one of the people.”  And that is something which, even with all his success, has never evaded him.

If Connor continues to build on his already strong pillars of talent, respect for Hip-Hop culture, and gratitude for his fans, he will have a long and successful career which surpasses the competition.

It’s still Aftermath and there ain’t goin’ be nothin’ after that!

AllHipHop.com: Thank you so much for taking time to speak me and AllHipHop.com.  We really appreciate it.  You and I have talked before and that was a real pleasure, so I’ve been looking forward to this interview.

Jon Connor: I want to say back, the same thing with you all.  It’s mutual.  I appreciate you all and the way you have always supported me from day one.  It’s always a pleasure, man.

First off, congratulations on the Compton album.  Are you pleased with the response it has been getting?

Yes, there has been an overwhelming love.  And just knowing that everybody has been so excited and finally we get this project from Dre that people have been waiting so long for.  The love is overwhelming; the response has been amazing.  And the way it’s going hand-in-hand with the Straight Outta Compton movie, you couldn’t ask for a better platform or set up.

I’ve seen social media pics of you, Dre, and others in the studio where you’ve referred to yourself as a “student.”  What would you say is the greatest lesson you’ve learned from these sessions?

There’s so many because, with Dre, Dre is the greatest producer of all-time.  For me, he’s like the Quincy Jones of Hip-Hop.  So the thing is, everyday you’re constantly learning.  I’d say one of the greatest things I’ve learned from Dre is that greatness is in the details.  Don’t let anything slide.  If you’re tired or haveDre, Game, Jon Connor been working for 12 hours and are ready to go to sleep, you still put in the same effort and the same time as when you first got there.  Work your hardest until you can barely keep your eyes open.  If you have to go through every song and comb through every lyric and melody and harmony and cadence, you do it because he [Dr. Dre] has a commitment to greatness.  We all call Dr. Dre the greatest of all-time and I’m just fortunate and blessed enough to be able to be at the studio and understand why.  I’ve always thought I had a grind and hard work ethic in me, but, by being around Dre, it just got taken to another level.

Just to follow up with that, to paint a picture, have you been in the studio with Dre where you’ve watched him make a beat?  Or has it been where he has pulled up an instrumental and asked you to write to it?  How does that whole process work?

That process is actually different from record to record.  There are joints where I was actually there for the conception of the music.  Like “One Shot One Kill,” I was there when that beat got made.  “One Shot One Kill” is like my baby *laughs*.  I watched it go from an idea and a sample to the addition of the live instrumentation and Snoop and everything that it eventually ended up becoming.  But it’s different from record to record, Dre is the type of cat where it’s all based on the feel.  If he’s feeling it and the vibe and the energy is there… he doesn’t care how the creative process happens.  The one common denominator in every record is that the vibe and positive energy is there.

That’s actually a great segue into one of my other questions.  What went through your head when you first found out that you were given song credit as the lead performing artist on “One Shot One Kill” as opposed to just being a guest feature?

I still don’t know if that has completely soaked into my brain.  It’s crazy.  I have a record with me featuring Snoop Dogg on Dr. Dre’s last album.  That’s beyond anything I could have ever dreamed.  It feels amazing.  Statik Selektah hit me and he said, “You are forever etched in Hip-Hop history.”  And the magnitude of that statement, I don’t know if I’ll ever really be able to fathom or truly understand it.  All I know is that it’s an amazing feeling and honestly it’s hard for me to even put it in words.

And then, of course, there’s “For the Love of Money”  which you also appear on.  Prior to telling a friend about this interview, he sent me a screenshot of his phone with that song highlighted and a caption which read “This song is on repeat.”  He told me how he looked you up, and I said that I’d been following your work for years.  You’re satisfying old fans and getting new ones.  It’s a beautiful thing, bro.

And with that I want to say ‘thank you’ and tell your man I said, ‘thank you‘ too.  It’s an amazing time.  This is my dream.  I’m a kid from Flint, Michigan, man.  It’s one of the most poverty-stricken places in the United States and so for us to be talking about the things we’re talking about, I’m truly humbled by that and I just to let the people know there’s more where that came from and I’ll forever be thankful to Dre for giving me this platform.  And I want to thank AllHipHop because you’ve all been rocking with me for years and y’all know the grind that I’ve put down and how hard I worked for this.  And with Dre, he saw and understood me as an artist and believed in me enough to give me a platform.  I’m just humbled by all of this.

One of the things I did to prepare for this is I went back and listened to “Big Brother” off of your Best in the World series.  And listened to how you described the whole scenario where Dre signed you.  How did that situation play out?

Yo, it was three phone calls and a flight.  There was the initial call when Xzibit hit me like, “Yo, I’m gonna let Dre hear your music.”  Then the second call was, “Okay, give me 10 songs you want Dre to hear.”  Then the third call was, “Dre wants you to be in California tomorrow.”  When I got to California, I was working the whole time.  Think about it, man.  I’m from Flint.  If you’re from Flint, you think Dr. Dre lives on like Mars or Jupiter.  And so for him to like your music… he was just playing beats and I rapped every verse I ever wrote.  I was pulling out verses from high school.  I was like I’m not leaving this house until Dr. Dre falls in love with what I do.  Whatever he needed to hear, I was gonna spit it.  It got to the point where I rapped so much, he finally just stopped the music and was like, “Alright, what do you want to do?”  And that was the moment that changed my life.

Thoughts on Straight Outta Compton?

It’s crazy, my experiences with the movie because I was fortunate enough to go on the set as they were making the movie.  There’s no weirder feeling, I was on the set one day where they were shooting a scene with the characters that play Dr. Dre and his wife Nicole.  And I’m sitting in one of these chairs on set as the real Dr. Dre and Nicole are sitting in front of me.  I leaned into Dre and was like, “Man, do you feel crazy right now?”  When I got signed to Aftermath, the movie was still at its infant stage where they still coming up with the script and picking actors.  I had a chance to legitimately watch this movie grow and become what it has become…  I think people already know it’s going to be good because it’s the story of N.W.A and we all want to see it,  but just the attention to detail that Gary, Dre, and Cube put into the movie – I think it’s going to surprise people because they’ll be things about N.W.A and their relationship and how things went down that none of us as fans knew.  It’s a great movie for Hip-Hop and a great movie in the sense of just being a great movie.

Jumping back to music, do you have any more “Best in the World” stuff coming out or is your next release going to be your Aftermath debut with original music?

You know what?  I don’t want to give away too much, but just know that the things that I am working on are almost done.  And we are so close to completion, it’s crazy.  But right now though, I just want the people to enjoy Compton.  For me right now, it’s all about Dre and thirty years plus of the greatest to ever do it.  It’s Dre Day!

6 Times Parents Caught Their Mischievous Kids But Struggled To Keep A Straight Face

Every parent has been there — you catch your kids doing something crafty to reach the cookies, or painting the dog’s fur, or cutting their younger sibling’s hair. You start disciplining them, but there’s one little thing that gets in your way: the fact that the situation — and, more importantly, your kid — is undeniably hilarious. So you lose it, struggling to keep it together or even erupting into laughter.

Fortunately for us, some parents don’t just focus on fighting the laughs; they also take the opportunity to film or photograph their kids after they’ve been caught red-handed. In the spirit of celebrating parents who are strong and soft, we’ve partnered with Angel Soft to compile our favorite sidesplitting parental moments — the ones where the only thing harder than disciplining your kid is disciplining yourself to not burst out laughing.

1. The Lipstick Lovers

How in the world do you get lipstick off of kids faces?!! O.M.G. #kidsaretheworst #motd #lippies #makeup

A photo posted by Mack (@thesodakshack) on

Image: Mackenzie Tims

This definitely isn’t what lipstick was made for, but good luck explaining that to a kid. One minute, everything is business as usual. The next, you find your kids covered in your favorite shade of rouge — and you can bet they’re pretty proud of themselves. At least at first.

“They knew they were busted as soon as I caught them, red-handed at that!” says the children’s mom, Mackenzie Tims. “I managed to keep a straight face while scolding them for getting into makeup without asking, but I struggled to keep my composure once I put them in the tub and realized how hard it was going to be to get the lipstick off their faces.” The best part? Her 5-year-old sighed and told her, “I wish I didn’t do this; I’m going to be stuck this color forever!”

“I had to bury my face in a towel every time I cracked a smile to keep from letting on that this was one of the most hilarious things they had ever done,” admits Tims.

2. The Applesauce Artist

Video: Jessica Cook

It was basically inevitable that this mom would let out some laughs as she gave her son a talking-to about his applesauce adventures. How can you keep it together when someone so small makes such a big mess (he even got applesauce on the dog) and then tries to negotiate his way out in that sweet little voice? It can’t be done; but this mom still manages to lay down some serious discipline, giggles aside. Pro tip: Blaming it on the dog never pans out — and almost always leads to a timeout.

3. The Future Picassos

Video: Cheryl Edwards

What do you do when three little boys draw all over the walls? You make them scrub, of course. If you think cleaning constitutes punishment, though, think again; these brothers are having a little too much fun washing the walls after they used them as their personal canvases.

“It was a struggle to keep a straight face when they were covered in markers in a freshly ‘decorated’ room and working to clean it off,” says mom Cheryl Edwards. Still, she puts the boys to work cleaning while stifling a laugh, which earns her major bonus parent points in our book.

4. The Tornadoes

Image: @making our dream/@happy.healthy.mama/@kidsaretheworst

Lesson learned: Never trust a kid in a store. All it takes is an instant; and in that instant, whether you’re catching up with a friend or examining your next purchase, you’ll find that each and every item from the shelves is littered along the aisle, all thanks to your oh-so-happy toddler.

That’s exactly what moms Michelle Fontin and Sarah Mandel found when they ran into each other on a shopping trip. “We watched [our kids] out of the corner of our eye, but at some point, pure mayhem had happened in the ‘throw’ blanket aisle,” Fontin recalls. “The damage had already been done, and the kids were super happy tossing everything around. So we actually let them play a bit longer while we finished our conversation.” Taking a moment to appreciate the hilarity (and preserve it for posterity’s sake) is what it’s all about, after all. “When it was time to go, we made them put everything back,” she explains. “To be honest — and I think most moms will agree — this disaster was worth an uninterrupted time of adult conversation with a dear friend!”

5. The Tagger

Ella proud of spelling her name #2010flashback #kidsaretheworst #think #EV

Sure, she doesn’t have a license to drive (give it another decade, maybe), but why should that stop her from claiming her wheels? After all, successfully spelling your name is cause for celebration — and in this case, cause for graffiting the car.

“It was impossible to get angry about this, mainly because of that smile that met me, so proud,” explains Ella’s father, Knut Espen Bryhn, who Instagrammed the automobile art. “And second, because I knew it [was] easy to clean off. I just had to laugh at it and explain that this was not a good idea.” Way to go, patient parents who reiterate the rules and take advantage of photo ops. We’re forever impressed by your balancing act.

6. The Storyteller

Video: Sherrica Sims/Rumble

This little doughnut thief is adamant that she’s innocent until proven guilty — despite that her half-eaten treat is hiding in plain sight. We’ve never seen a kid try to talk her way out of trouble quite as well as this smooth-talking storyteller, and her mom deserves some major kudos for keeping it together as she reminds Tiffany of the rules. Bonus points to Mom for playing along with the story — and for poking holes in it when her daughter is clearly the culprit.

Angel Soft is proud to celebrate parents who can lay down the law, but still appreciate the humor in life’s little messes. Parents are both soft and strong, which is why Angel Soft products are too; learn more at AngelSoft.com.

How Frat Hazing Inspired A Book About Sex Between Straight Guys

Institutions rooted in tradition, like college fraternities and the military, have long been known to ritually haze their new recruits and pledges. But when these hazings turn blatantly homoerotic — which they often do, according to author Jane Ward – there’s an unexpected denial of the interaction’s sexual nature.

Ward talked with HuffPost Live on Thursday about her new book, Not Gay: Sex Between Straight White Men, and how straight men — including those who are homophobic or misogynistic — can wind up sleeping with another man.

Watch Ward describe the lives of straight men engaging in homosexual activity in the video above.

LA Cops Say Straight Outta Compton Adds “Fuel To The Fire For Hating Cops”

At least one group of people who have a problem with N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton is LAPD. Reportedly, police have an issue with the way they are depicted in the film.

Reports TMZ:

The cops we spoke with share one sentiment … the movie portrays the LAPD officers as “beating machines” … brutalizing innocent citizens in the inner city.

Former L.A. City Councilman Dennis Zine, who was himself an LAPD cop and headed up the Police Protective League, tells us, “It’s a terrible time to release a movie like this. It adds fuel to the fire for hating cops.”

The cops we spoke with are bitter, especially because they say they’ve spent a lot of time and energy creating bonds in areas where police abuse was once prevalent.

Some of the officers specifically blame Universal, saying the studio is putting profits above the safety of the officers who make L.A. safe.

And all of the officers say the timing is awful, given what’s going on across the country. If Universal was determined to release the movie, the cops we spoke with say they should have waited.

Wait for what, cops to stop brutalizing, and even killing, innocent people?

If the LAPD is so concerned about what they see in the mirror, how about they change THEIR behavior? Just saying.

“Straight Outta Compton” Is a Stunning Surprise

Movie Review – Jackie K Cooper
“Straight Outta Compton” (Universal Pictures)

“Straight Outta Compton” is a movie that on the surface is easy to dislike. It tells the story of three men who built their careers on gangsta rap, and what percentage of the moviegoing audience is totally into that genre of music. The film is bursting at the seams with profanity and obscenities, so continuous they become like a battering ram to the brain. And it is sharply and abruptly violent giving the audience no time to brace for the onslaught.

BUT it is also a story so intense that you can not tear your eyes away from the screen and your ears hunger for each new word of dialogue. The acting is amazingly natural and realistic bringing the characters to living, breathing life. The director has such tight control over the film that it is paced perfectly and gives just enough information to totally satisfy. And finally the music is driven by the story and forces you to actually hear the lyrics rather than push them away because of squeamishness.

The movie focuses on three friends: Ice Cube (O’Shea Jackson, Jr.), Dr. Dre (Corey Hawkins) and Eazy-E (Jason Mitchell). They combine their musical talents to form NWA, and they use their music to express their fears and frustrations with life as it is lived in Compton, California. They start off performing locally but get wider exposure when they are noticed by talent representative Jerry Heller (Paul Giamatti).

They enter a world of wealth and opportunity that is laced with corruption and danger. The higher up they go the farther down they have to fall. Each man reacts to this rise in popularity and plenty in his own specific way. It takes a wise man not to be blinded by the glare of celebrity that shines on them.

The entire cast of this movie from the smallest parts to the largest is right on target. It is hard to single out a few from the many talented performances offered. Still one can’t fail to mention the vulnerability shown by Mitchell as he presents Eazy-E, the strength of character Jackson instills in Ice Cube, or the emotional turmoil shading Hawkins’ concept of Dr. Dre. Add to that the shifting nature of Giamatti’s Heller, and the frightening countenance of R. Marcos Taylor’s Suge Knight. Any of these men could be nominated for awards next year.

F. Gary Gray also has to be lauded for his expert direction of this complex saga. There is a lot of story to tell concerning these men and Gary does it in two hours and twenty plus minutes. To his credit it never seems too long or too short in its presentation.

The film is rated R for profanity, nudity and violence.

This is a movie that should appeal to a limited audience but it is presented with such skill and with such compassion and heart that it should draw in huge numbers of persons wanting to see a real work of art. These people will be of all ages, races and genders. “Straight Outta Compton” could have been a movie without merit if created by lesser hands. This time they got the story right and handed it to the right people to make it work. “Straight Outta Compton” is one of the best movies of the year.

I scored “Straight Outta Compton” a hip-hop 8 out of 10.

What It Is Like Having an LGBT Parent: Let’s Get the Facts Straight

2015-08-14-1439579767-2135933-PaulMarisaBill.jpg

My father told me he was gay when I was 13. He said he had known ever since he was a little boy. Growing up Catholic in North Carolina during the 1960s did not present the most welcoming of circumstances for a gay man. For a lot of people, it is difficult to understand how a gay man could marry a woman and have children, but it is a lot more common than one might think. Most of my girlfriends are ecstatic when I tell them I have a gay dad; most of my guy friends are uncomfortable. For me, it’s a fact of life.

First, let me explain to you what it is not: It does not just mean I have a “cool dad” who goes shopping with me and that we get our nails done together (although, occasionally, we do).

This is what it is like: Harnessing my anger when I hear about hate crimes against the LGBT community and crying when I hear about LGBT kids committing suicide because of bullying. Biting my tongue (not often successfully,) when someone tells me that being gay, transgender, bisexual, etc. is “wrong, immoral or sick.” Watching the confused look on a person’s face when I try to explain why my dad stayed in the closet for 20 years and started a family as a straight man. Feeling hurt and frustrated when people actually believe gays set bad examples for their kids and being teased in grade school and, at that time, feeling ashamed. Have you ever tried to explain to someone that your stepdad is your father’s husband?

I fight against the ignorance because I know what it is actually like having a gay dad: wonderful. I adore watching him love my stepdad fully and wholeheartedly, no differently than two straight people would. Having a married gay dad means I get to have not only one intelligent, warm-hearted dad, but two. My dad, as a writer and advocate for the LGBT community, has become a resource and beacon of hope for lesbians and gays all around the world enduring the same struggle he did, and he encourages them to be open about who they are. As for changes in my life? I have become accepting and welcoming of all, regardless of how different they may be from me.

The relationship my father and I have today did not come easily, but it sure was worth it. Through a lot of counseling, tears and love, he became not only a better parent but a best friend. I am not sure if we became closer because he came out of the closet, but by showing his authentic self, our bond strengthened. He does not fit the so-called stereotypical “gay man,” but we certainly do enjoy our lunch dates and nights out on the town together. Our relationship is no different than any other good father and daughter bond. He still calls me every so often to make sure I am focusing on my studies, taking care of myself and staying away from bad boys and parties. (Sorry, Dad.)

Having a gay dad is so much more than meets the eye, but I would not have it any other way, and in fact I couldn’t. At forty-three years of age, I’m glad he finally figured that out too.

Ice Cube, Ludacris, Usher, B.O.B, Cast, & More Attend ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Atlanta Screening

Photo Credit: Paras Griffin for Getty for Universal Pictures

Universal Pictures hosted an advance screening of their new film, ‘STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON’, on Friday, July 24th at Regal Atlantic Station in Atlanta, along with a Q&A with cast members O’Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, producer Ice Cube, and director F. Gary Gray. The Q&A was moderated by executive producer, Will Packer.

The screening was well attended by music’s top celebrities and influencers including: Usher, Ludacris, B.O.B., 2 Chainz, Big Krit, David Banner, Da Brat, Lil’ Scrappy, DC Young Fly, Polow Da Don and more. ‘Straight Outta Compton’ hits theaters Friday, August 14, 2015!

The Q&A, moderated by executive producer Will Packer, gave insight into what it was like for the casting process and what the process of preparation and executing the roles consisted of.

Ice Cube spoke first about his feelings on the film,

“Having our story told in a masterful way by F. Gary Gray and to see my son get an opportunity like he got when I did ‘Boys in The Hood’. As a parent you want your kids to step up at the moment of truth, and when they do it you are just overjoyed. I’m on cloud 9, 10, 11, and 12.”

F. Gary Gray shared that the movie was personal for him because he grew up in the same neighborhood with Ice Cube, and he started his career with him with ‘Friday’;, and he was there when Ice Cube left N.W.A and went solo. He shared that he did several of Ice Cube’s solo music videos. He also shared that all of his movies prior prepared him for this film, and he believes this is his best work.

O’Shea Jackson Jr. shared that the film had a level of importance to him that was unmatchable.

“It was about N.W.A and brotherhood but more importantly it was about my family’s legacy. It became my obsession. I couldn’t let someone else have that and fumble.”

Will Packer asked Ice Cube what it was like to have his biopic come to the big screen and be portrayed by his son. He also asked Ice Cube what that did to his psyche.

“I knew my son was in good hands because we did a lot of pre-production. F. Gary Gray is a masterful director at bringing our stories to life. We did everything we could do to prepare.

F. Gary Gray also shared that O’Shea Jackson Jr. wasn’t handed the role just because he was Ice Cube’s son. He explained that there were actually two other choices just in case he didn’t show up and show out.

Corey Hawkins shared his experiences in preparing for the role of Dr. Dre.

“I knew this was going to be a big movie, and I knew it would be a lot on our shoulders. I remember going through the ringer. The audition process was not easy. Dr. Dre kind of took me under his wings and said he wanted it to be iconic. He said, I just want to get the legacy right and whatever you need I got you.”

Jason Mitchell wasn’t able to have Eazy-E mentor him for the role, but nonetheless he shared what enabled him to kill it on the screen!

“It was not an easy thing at all. I looked at it like Eazy’s life and my life run hand in hand. If I didn’t do this I was going to go back to my old life. It was so much morale around me. He (Eazy-E) is such an icon, but first he is a regular man. Cube and Dre also helped me with a lot.”

He also shared that he had to practice his accent for 6-8 hours a day and learn how to walk and talk like he was from California. He also had to gain weight by eating 4,000 calories a day!

Remember the film hits theaters August 14th!

Synopsis: In the mid-1980s, the streets of Compton, California, were some of the most dangerous in the country. When five young men translated their experiences growing up into brutally honest music that rebelled against abusive authority, they gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation. Following the meteoric rise and fall of N.W.A., ‘Straight Outta Compton’ tells the astonishing story of how these young men revolutionized music and pop culture forever the moment they told the world the truth about life in the hood and ignited a cultural war. Starring O’Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell as Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E, Straight Outta Compton is directed by F. Gary Gray (Friday, Set It Off, The Italian Job). The drama is produced by original N.W.A. members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, who are joined by fellow producers Matt Alvarez and Tomica Woods-Wright. Will Packer serves as executive producer of the film alongside Gray.

Why So Many Straight Women Watch Lesbian Porn

Over the years, Karen, 35, has established exactly what she likes when it comes to online porn. Three or four times a week, she goes in search of new videos in some of her favorite categories — Big breast play. Squirting. Lesbian. When she spoke to The Huffington Post, Karen had recently watched a video that hit all of her sweet spots: two women who didn’t have “perky, fake boobs,” but instead looked real, like they could be moms. They were in bed, kissing and fondling each other.

“It was nice,” said Karen. “Sensual.”

“I gravitate to what gets me going quicker,” she continued, “which is girl-on-girl.”

But Karen is straight.

There is little good data on how many self-identified straight women regularly watch woman-on-woman porn, but what evidence is available suggests Karen is hardly alone. A 2014 report from the free porn site Pornhub in collaboration with Buzzfeed, for example, revealed that “lesbian” was far and away the top viewed category among its female users, as well as the top search term — and women were 445 percent more likely than men to search for “girl on girl.” Though the survey relied on Google analytic demographic stats and therefore did not capture users’ sexual orientation, the overwhelming popularity of those terms hints at a lot of straight women getting off on same-sex porn. So does the marked uptick in searches for “lesbian seduces straight girl,” which increased by 328 percent between 2013 and 2014, according to PornHub’s internal data.

And sex experts agree.

“The statistic thrown around now is that 1 in 3 adult users of porn are female,” sex therapist Kimberly Resnick Anderson told The Huffington Post. “Though there is no way to say what percentage of that 1 in 3 are straight women looking for lesbian porn, the numbers are too high for it to be just gay women. Straight women are looking at lesbian porn.”

The industry appears to be taking notice. PornHub estimates that 7 percent of its videos are in the lesbian category, making it the site’s most popular category overall, Corey Price, the site’s vice president explained in an e-mail to The Huffington Post.

“While we don’t want to speculate on how this interest [from straight women] has changed and shaped the industry,” Price wrote, “we have noticed our content partners have been uploading more lesbian content than ever before.”

For many women, same-sex porn provides an opportunity to imagine what it might be like to be with another woman, even if they consider themselves on the strictly heterosexual end of the Kinsey scale. For them, lesbian pornography — which for purposes of this article simply refers to porn starring two or more women, not porn that is necessarily geared toward lesbian or bisexual women or even features actors who identify as queer themselves — is purely a fantasy, not a desire they want to act on.

“There’s this disinhibiting factor of the Internet,” Resnick Anderson explained. “People feel so free to explore things they would not necessarily want to do in real life, but that might be compelling to look at or learn from.”

Vickie, 46, says that’s the case for her. She has never been intimate with a woman in real life, nor has she ever given it much thought, though she considers lesbian porn her “get-off choice” and watches it three or four times a month, often with her husband. She has a clear physical type she seeks out — women with thin or medium bodies and long hair. “I like fingernails,” she said.

But Vickie has never encountered a woman in real life for whom she has felt any kind of sexual attraction.

“Lesbian porn is just much more fantasy-based,” she said.

For other women, the appeal of lesbian porn is a little bit more complicated, allowing them to express a part of their sexual identity that would otherwise remain locked. Karen, for example, has questioned her own sexuality at various points in her life, particularly in her early 20s. She now identifies as straight, but says she would be open to experimenting with women in real life — if she weren’t too timid. Same-sex porn helps her virtually scratch that itch.

“I’ve never experimented, but I think about it,” Karen said. “I think I’m so nervous and shy when it comes to that, I’d probably never follow-through.”

But Resnick Anderson said that much of the appeal of same-sex porn has little to do with potentially complex questions of sexual fantasy and fluidity, and more to do with the simple fact that much of the lesbian porn that’s out there tends to give more air time to acts that actually get women off.

In other words, oral sex.

“Seventy to 80 percent of women are unable to reliably achieve orgasm from intercourse alone, so oral stimulation is going to be more erotic to them,” Resnick Anderson said. “There also tends to be more foreplay. Whereas in the straight porn, it may go straight to the f**k scene or money shot. In lesbian porn there’s a focus on breast stimulation. It tends to be more tender and more intimate.”

“I like certain acts,” Vickie agreed. “Basically, eating out and also toys.” The heterosexual porn she’s watched tends to focus on penetration and leaves her with the sense that when they do go down on women, the men aren’t necessarily all that into it or particularly skilled.

“For me, it’s more that women know what women want,” she said. “How to do it and how to get it.” Ninety percent of the time, she imagines herself on the receiving end of oral sex she’s watching.

Hilary, 50, echoed the sentiment, and says she has even used lesbian porn as a kind of instructional tool for her fiance.

“I think guys tend to think, ‘If I just use my finger or penis, she’s going to get all this enjoyment and have an orgasm,’” she laughed. “I can show him, no, pumping in and out doesn’t work, and there are other parts of the body that are as much of a turn on as the vagina. It’s not that he’s inept at all, but I can watch it with him and say, ‘Oh, playing with my breasts like that might be nice.’”

If heterosexual porn provided more of what these women were looking for — foreplay, oral sex and women who seem to be actually orgasming rather than just shrieking theatrically — they might be more interested, they all said.

Instead, they’re content to get what they need from the woman-on-woman world.

“The main focus in straight porn is either the male partner’s pleasure, or [giving] the impression that he is a ‘master lover,’” Sarah, 23, wrote in an e-mail to The Huffington Post. “With women, the motions and movements during mutual masturbation, or oral sex, are far less fast and furious.”

Lesbian porn provides the best approximation of what she actually craves in her real life: A sense of genuine enjoyment. A skilled partner.

In other words, just good sex.

A Thank You Note to Straight People

2015-07-08-1436323587-6594168-dadpride3.jpg

A recent article in the Washington Post repeatedly downplays the significance of 26 million Facebook users changing their profile photos to the colors of the rainbow flag. While I agree that this “slacktivist” gesture alone isn’t as meaningful as how individuals live their daily lives, the author’s logic is flawed. He accuses the non-LGBT rainbow-bearers of co-opting the symbol of the movement.

“Throughout history, the powerful have taken credit for social progress they did not participate in,” the author argues.

By this reasoning, only those who are gay, lesbian, bi or trans can wave the rainbow flag. Taking this a step further, only those who’ve fought in wars are allowed to wave the American flag.

I understand where the author is coming from. My coming out process was long, painful and deeply personal. Yet seeing the sea of rainbow-colored profile photos is — if nothing else — a sign that times have truly changed.

The victory of same-sex marriage can (and should) be shared by the entire country. The fight was rooted in equality, so how can we begrudge anyone the right to celebrate right alongside us? This doesn’t threaten or belittle my story; it only serves to strengthen and amplify it.

The day before the Post article was published, I wrote on my personal blog, thanking my straight allies for changing their profile photos — and for so much more. The truth is, the Supreme Court’s decision legalizing same-sex marriage couldn’t have happened without straight people — and not just the five justices that voted in favor of it.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Dear Straight People,

Thank you. Thank you for cheering right alongside us as we in the LGBT community celebrate a new-found, long-overdue measure of equality. Thank you for the endless sea of rainbow-colored photos. Thank you for voting. Thank you for teaching your children (and sometimes your parents) that not every family is the same, yet deserving of the same respect. Thank you for telling them that whether they grow up to love the opposite gender or their own, you will still love them. Thank you for encouraging them to be whoever they were meant to be. Thank you for trying to understand and to learn. Thank you for asking questions, even if you don’t always have the right words. Thank you for being fair and equal in your schools, your jobs, your churches, and your neighborhoods. Thank you for defending us in a fight, even when we’re not around. Especially when we’re not around.

To friends, families, classmates and coworkers: thank you for allowing us the time and space to come out — to know ourselves and to be seen, heard and known on our own terms. We realize this is a journey for you, too; we will do our best to remember that.

On a more personal note, I count myself lucky that the majority of my family has stuck around since I came out 20 years ago. I love that they love my husband and my son, and their presence in our lives means the world to me.

I also want to voice my thanks to a specific group of straight people — the fathers I’ve met since becoming a dad myself. Some of you I’ve met in real life; countless others I know only virtually. To varying degrees you’ve been sounding board and shit-caller, muse and motivator, confidante and comrade. You’ve made me laugh, cry, think, and scream — sometimes all at once. Thank you for being my friends, my brothers, my family.

More importantly, thank you for doing all you do as you raise your families — living your lives as fair-minded men. Among you are those with LGBT fathers and mothers, aunts and uncles, in-laws, siblings, children. Some of you live and work alongside many who are LGBT. For some, I was the first gay person you ever interacted with.

Regardless of your experience, that is how the world changes — people choosing to love and accept those in their everyday lives that have known hatred, rejection and judgment elsewhere. This is how humanity grows, strengthens, and moves on from a history of bigotry and fear. So thank you for being the parents, children, friends that you are — and in turn, changing the world.

With much love & gratitude,
Brent

Straight Guys Do It Hard

We give straight, virgin male porn star wannabe James Kelly a wicked welcome into the world of Gay4Pay porn. Instead of banging the promised babes, he`s coaxed into doing a dude. When it`s all over, he describes in detail what he likes most about a girl`s body, seemingly to reinforce his hetero identity for the benefit of the viewers…and himself.

Tall, dark, and handsome are just a few words that describe Brandon Monroe. Standing at 6’2" and ripped from swimming his entire life, we already thought he was hot but when his pants came off and we saw his giant cock our juices started to flow.

Bobby Rail was a little uneasy from the beginning when he found out he would be doing a DP scene. The thought of his cock rubbing against another dude`s cock was something he wanted nothing to do with. After delivering the bad news that Ashley was a no show, we convinced him to interact with Drake Jaden!

Braxton is a hot 22 year old straight and naive country boy with blond hair, blue eyes, smooth muscular body with perfect proportions, hung like a horse, hot, lickable hind quarters and sports some sexy well placed ink – his stud branding. We knew from experience that this would be one tough straight dude for us to harness and we were right!

Our straight guy in the next scene showed up to the studio and was beyond nervous and scared about his scene with the "girl." So, we bring to you a special New Years Behind The Scenes solo with Drake Jaden and his "boy friend." In this special presentation, you will get to see how Drake prepares himself prior to filming a scene. This is one HOT solo!

Portis Pockets Straight? Former NFL Star Clinton Portis Owes IRS, Casino

Former NFL standout running back Clinton Portis once made an infamous quip on sports radio in 2008 of “Portis pockets straight,” which would be a hilarious meme in today’s world. Yet things aren’t so straight for Portis nor his pockets after reports came out that the former Washington Professional Football Team star owes money to the IRS, a casino and a host of other creditors.

Portis, a two-time Pro Bowl selectee and University of Miami player, is being sought by the IRS, the MGM Grand Casino in Las Vegas, an auto dealer, and a mortgage company among others. The documents, uncovered by the University of Florida’s student newspaper, lists out a bevy of debt faced by Portis which includes home and car payments.

From The Independent Florida Alligator:

The Internal Revenue Service says former Washington Redskins star and Gainesville native Clinton Portis failed to pay more than $ 450,000 in federal income taxes.

According to documents, Portis failed to pay $ 401,432.18 in individual income taxes in 2006, when Portis was in his third season with the Redskins. He also failed to pay $ 57,187.61 in individual income taxes in 2010, according to the documents.

Portis also owes $ 287,178.56 to the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas from May 2015, according to court testimony obtained by the Alligator. The former Gainesville High standout lists two properties in Gainesville.

Much of Portis’ trouble began in August 2014 after he faced foreclosure on one of his Florida homes. The Alligator reports that attempts from a private investigator to serve Portis papers yielded no results as he couldn’t be found.

Camryn Howard Talks Embodying DJ Speed In Straight Outta Compton

Being raised on Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, having an uncle who locally presided over the N.W.A’s reign in rap and being a recording artist has natually groomed Camryn Howard to be a part of history before he even knew it was being made. The thriving multi-talent is seeing his blessings manifested as he’s set to star in not one but two summer blockbusters this year in Ted 2 and Straight Outta Compton.

In the latter flick, he was chosen to play DJ Speed, the world’s most dangerous group’s unheralded touring DJ. While speaking exclusively to Hip-Hop Wired, reveals how being in the midst of gangsta greatness helped his own music career as the R&B singer Cam30 flourish and why Straight Outta Compton will be the one to beat this year.

“They had been auditioning for like a year beforehand and the casting director just called me in,” Howard says, remembering his first time on the set. “They ended up picking me because I had other stuff on my resume and tested me out at the climax of the movie. [F. Gary Gray] just sticks me on the bus with the four other cast members and says, ‘Just be natural,” Howard recalls with a laugh. “It was really crazy because [Dr.] Dre was just walking around the set and it was a really a shock. There was a whole bunch people I knew who auditioned for the role and they ended up calling me and keeping me for the rest of the movie.”

Ice Cube & Co. cast an obviously talented new crop of actors for the roles (including his own son) and with the feeling of experience being a common link, Howard says creating a bond on the set was relatively easy.

“Everybody was like family. We developed a brotherhood and friendship and when see each other, we call each other by our character’s names,” he admits. As for playing DJ Speed, audiences should expect to get a true-to-life portrayal of a group member often rubbed out of the group’s history.

“Speed, he was like Eazy-E’s best friend so it was cool to see how he was able to go on tour with the group. There are some pretty dramatic scenes in the movie; I can’t lie. I don’t want to spoil anything but you’ll definitely get your money’s worth,” he reveals.

Switching gears to the music front, Howard is equally excited about his role in Straight Outta Compton as he is his music career. He accredits his mother’s background as a gospel singer to his decision to go the R&B route instead of rapping.

cam30

“I’m just a creative person so I feel like when you’re singing, there’s some places you can take it and evoke emotion that you can’t when you’re rapping,” the now-talking Cam30 says. “But I’m still about the lyrical content and relating to the urban culture.”

There’s nothing like having the universe working in your favor in all aspects. While the Straight Outta Compton biopic is dropping on August 14, Cam30’s debut single, “Quarantine” is out now. Watch the video below.

Broke Straight Guys

Just what will straight guys do for some cash? It seems that some will do almost anything, including exploring their unexplained cock lust on camera! We start this 120 minute feature with Andrew learning what cock tastes like as he shares his first gay fuck with willing Jason, unloading an impressive wad over his back by the end. Massively hung Matt is the next in line to push his boundaries as his virgin ass is penetrated by Kai, finishing off with some immense cum shots for both. Straight boy Marcus was a little more nervous about the prospect when it came to taking Jack’s impressive shaft, but once it was in he was getting off on it and cumming a hot load with that dick in his virgin ass! And speaking of nervous, straight muscle hunk Neil might have enjoyed his first blowjob from a guy, but he wasn’t expecting to get a cock in his butt from RJ in a flip flop scene. Not only does he experience a guys hole around his big dick for the first time, he gets the cum fucked out of him too! But can relative newcummer Riley Tess take a fucking from a real dominant former straight man like Janusz Go? You bet he can! The aggressive anal slamming Riley takes from Janusz is pretty impressive, as are the cum shots both deliver by the time they’re done. They might have started out as straight guys, but they’ve all discovered a genuine lust for dick!

Using A Straight Guy

No one loves banging out a hot straight guy more than me. This dude may look familiar to you some of you, he goes by Roman Rivers. I met him while helping out with a shoot for On The Hunt a few years back and we’ve been buddies since. I find it so hot when shooting with some straight guys who do porn because they try their best to act like they’re into man sex even though they are hating it more and more with every thrust of cock…There’s just something really gratifying knowing that I’m the only one getting pleasure out of the situation. My favorite part of filming with this straight dude was when he asked if he could "have some fun too" and takes a turn fucking me (which I considered but declined and then told him he was gay for asking). At least he got a few free beers out of the deal!

Why White Straight Males Don’t Talk About Privilege

There’s a common trend when it comes to discussing sensitive topics such as racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and classism. The only people that truly delve into public discourse about such topics are the individuals that are being affected by them.

People of color speak up about racism, women talk about sexism, the LGBT community is vocal about homophobia and transphobia, and individuals of lower economic standing speak up about classism.

Why?

Yes, of course the individuals that are being oppressed by certain systems are going to be the most vocal and obstinate for change. But, wouldn’t the most effective way to change a society be to have members of dominant groups affect cultural and legal changes — since they are the creators of these systems?

In other words, members of the dominant group have to be aware in the ways they are privileged. And yet, the conversation does not start with these people.

African-Americans may talk day and night about the ways race negatively affects them, but what good will it do if it is not understood by the human beings that created and currently sustain the social institutions that have oppressed them for three centuries to the modern day? Why does the conversation about racism not start with white Americans? Why does the conversation about sexism not start with men? What about homophobia and heterosexuals?

It’s almost as if whiteness or maleness is invisible, or an “unmarked category.”

This is power.

The ability to dominate in every single social political and economic institution, and yet be so invisible, questioned by no one and leaving unchecked. This position is so powerful that even the people that benefit from such systems have not even the slightest understanding of how it privileges them.

Power can speak loudly, but also be silent.

This is why often times when people are confronted about their privilege, there are strong responses. A woman in my sociology class discussion explained that she resents the phrase “white privilege” because she feels that in no way she is privileged, due to financial struggles she has endured in her life.

But the problem is: privilege doesn’t mean one hasn’t struggled or suffered. It does not equate wealth and status. It merely means a special advantage or immunity available only to a particular group. So “white privilege” simply means that there are certain unearned social benefits to having white skin whether one sees it or not. This woman conflated these terms and was quick to demonstrate the ways she was oppressed, yet completely blind in the ways that she is privileged. Yes, she suffered socioeconomic burdens, but her poverty will never be attributed to her skin color or her race.

Yet, this would not be the case with perhaps a black woman, who would most likely have that hurtful stereotype imposed on her. This experience demonstrated to me how sometimes systems of oppression can be blind to one another.

I think the first step to truly breaking social barriers in this country is acknowledging the ways in which we are advantaged.

I am an Indian-American woman, and I have been made aware of my “otherness” as a non-white, dark-skinned woman since I was a small child. As a woman of color, I face certain injustices and micro-aggressions, but as a cisgender heterosexual, I do not.

I acknowledge that I am privileged in these ways.

You may ask: why am I privileged?

I don’t have to think about which bathroom to go to, because my gender is validated by mainstream society. My sexuality is validated as well. If I had a significant other, I could freely be affectionate with him in public without thinking twice or having to accommodate the comfort levels of others around me. I have never had gender experiences that did not match the sex I was assigned to at birth. I also come from a financially stable family. I have never had to take up a job to support the family income, take out student loans or go to bed with an empty stomach. My family’s socioeconomic status has allowed me the privilege of growing up in a middle-class neighborhood with good quality schools where I was able to attain an excellent elementary, middle and high school education.

So I recognize my privilege, the next step?

I have to take every initiative to change my language, attitude and behavior towards people who are marginalized in one way or the other. Using my knowledge to try and change the mindsets, and eventually the greater social milieu of the society, and country I live in.

And I believe everyone else should take initiative too.

Then, maybe one day, the marginalized won’t be “marginalized” anymore.

They will just be who they want to be, without question and without labels.
