Tokyo Studio Visit With Tomo Koizumi

On a recent blustery, rainy Saturday morning in Tokyo, designer Tomo Koizumi is holed up in his miniscule studio — resolutely calm, considering how he had burst onto the fashion scene at New York Fashion Week only two months prior.
The designer’s ambitious ruffled gowns were discovered on Instagram by stylist Katie Grand, who banded with Marc Jacobs to help Koizumi stage his first fashion show in Jacobs’ store. In the weeks since, the Tokyo native has become a new fashion industry darling. Next week he will walk the Met Gala’s red carpet, with a celebrity dressed in his designs. Koizumi’s gowns will also be featured in the Costume Institute’s new show, “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” a theme for which his flamboyant creations seem destined.
“I have to e-mail a lot now, I have to manage the looks being shipped around the world, I have to arrange shoots — it’s going crazy for me,” Koizumi told WWD in his studio, wheezing through hay-fever allergies.

While a portrait of success from the outside, Koizumi works with little industrial infrastructure: He has no employees and works out of the small living room in his sister’s Nakameguro apartment. No more than 100 square feet, the room

EXCLUSIVE: The Whitney Museum to Honor Michael Bloomberg at Gala and Studio Party

The Whitney Museum of American Art will honor Michael Bloomberg during its annual Gala and Studio Party on April 9.
The centrist politician, who two weeks ago revealed he would not be running for president in 2020, is “a great friend to the Whitney,” according to the museum’s Alice Pratt Brown director Adam D. Weinberg. Bloomberg’s honor stems from his philanthropic work and support for artists and cultural organizations; under his administration spanning 11 years, the founder of Bloomberg LP backed 500 public art projects.
There’s more cause for celebration, though: the gala, which this year will be sponsored by Michael Kors and Audi, marks the four-year anniversary of the museum’s move downtown to the Meatpacking District. Plus folks will be able to celebrate — or perhaps more accurately, mourn — the closing of the oft-Instagrammed exhibit “Andy Warhol — From A to B and Back Again.”
For Kors’ part, he said he’s looking forward to checking out the next thing the museum has to offer.
“I love the building and the fact that there’s always something new and provocative to see,” he said. “Having the Whitney in my backyard is a dream.”

For 33 months, from 1977 to 1980, the nightclub Studio 54 was the place to be seen in Manhattan. A haven of hedonism, tolerance, glitz and glamor, Studio was very hard to gain entrance to and impossible to ignore, with news of who was there filling the gossip columns daily. Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, two college friends from Brooklyn, succeeded in creating the ultimate escapist fantasy in the heart of the theater district. Rubell was the bon vivant who wanted to be everybody’s friend and was photographed with every celebrity du jour who entered the club and Schrager was the behind-the-scenes creative mastermind who shunned the limelight. Studio 54 was an instant success and a cash cow, but the drug-and-sex-fueled dream soon imploded in financial scandal and the club’s demise. With unprecedented access to Schrager, who tells the whole unvarnished story for the first time, and a treasure-trove of rare footage, director Matt Tyrnauer (Valentino: The Last Emperor, Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood) constructs a vivid, glorious portrait of a disco-era phenomenon, and tells the story of two friends who stuck together through an incredible series of highs and lows.

Ones to Watch: Studio ALCH, C2H4 and Feng Chen Wang on the Power of Streetwear and Brand Collaborations

LONDON — Designers from around the world have been coming in waves to London Fashion Week Men’s and among the newest names on the calendar are Studio ALCH, C2H4 and Feng Chen Wang. But while they may be new to the London runways, they’ve already garnered international attention, having worked with brands such as Nike, Levi’s, Kappa and Converse.
The Australian designer Alexandra Hackett of Studio ALCH, who creates new garments from repurposed Nike pieces, said she’s come to London to be better integrated into the international market. “Australia is quite geographically removed, which is reflected in its industry. London is more of an internationally recognized city and you can create product that, perhaps, has more markets in different countries across the world,” she said.
Hackett caught Nike’s attention early on and the famous swoosh has become her brand’s trademark. The sportswear giant has also sponsored some of her designs. Hackett has snared celebrity fans such as Kendrick Lamar, who has worn Studio ALCH’s boiler suit made from reconstructed Nike bags, and British Grime rappers Stormzy and Skepta.
“I was always interested in Nike from a branding perspective and thought it would be a really interesting brand to work with in terms of their

Levi’s Unveils Project F.L.X. Customization Studio in Downtown L.A.

This weekend Levi’s will launch a limited-edition customization studio in downtown Los Angeles that will allow denim lovers to create a jean finish from start to, well, finish.
Created with state-of-the-art Project F.L.X. (future-led execution), the portable studio uses the latest advances in laser-powered technology to digitize the design and development of denim finishing, enabling Levi’s to take customization to new levels. Fans can pick their denim finish — rips, fades, distressing — and wash, and watch as lasers do the work in minutes, followed by sustainable washing.
The by-appointment-only studio, which will be open through Oct. 15, is a precursor to in-store Project F.L.X. technology that will be available starting in spring 2019.
The heritage denim brand has long nurtured the custom experience, first with its Lot No. 1 program for made-to-order jeans, then with Levi’s Tailor Shops for pins, patches, alterations, repairs and chain stitch embroidery. Now, Project F.L.X. will allow customers to design their own one-of-a-kind pair of Levi’s jeans and jackets.
Throughout the studio’s 10-week stay, notable friends of the brand such as Kelly Slater, Victor Cruz, Kith, Clare Vivier and Karla Welch will create limited-edition pieces at the studio for giveaways on Levi’s Instagram platform.

Tanya Morgan Returns To Spotlight With New Studio LP YGWY$4

Tanya Morgan has been one of independent Hip-Hop’s most consistent acts, with the duo of Von Pea and Donwill staying busy separately and as part of the Lessondary crew for well over a decade now. The group has unleashed its latest studio album YGWY$ 4, its first full-length release in over four years.

We saw a bit of TM last year as they were heavily featured on the Lessondary’s Ahead of Schedule album, and the Abandoned Theme Park EP with Lessondary member Che Grand flexing his production muscles. With YGWY$ 4, the group’s fourth full-length since professionally releasing music since 2005, Tanya Morgan believes this album captures the best of what they have to offer musically at this juncture of their career.

The album isn’t overloaded with features, but former crew member and still-close ally Illyas makes an appearance, as does Atlanta-based MC and producer, Jermiside. New York-based vocalist and longtime affiliate Cyren Young also shows up for a pair of songs.

The visual roll out began earlier this month with the thumping “Dirty Stayout” track featuring Afaliah. TM released a video for “Trunk Sh*t” this past Friday. Check out both visuals below.

YGWY$ 4 is available at most online retailers, all of which can be found by following this link.

Dr. Dre & Eazy-E’s Sons Kick It At N.W.A’s Original Garage Studio [VIDEO]

Neither Curtis Young or Eric Wright Jr. a.k.a. the sons of Dr. Dre and Eazy-E respectively, made the final cut for the Straight Outta Compton cast. That additional degree of separation isn’t stopping their flourish from celebrating the big weekend the N.W.A biopic experienced in theaters.

TMZ paid a visit to the two Hip-Hop princes in what just so happens to be the garage-turned-studio where their legendary dads got their musical start.

In the film, there is a pivotal moment that shows Dr. Dre recording Eazy-E for what would eventually become “Boyz-n-the-Hood” and it took place right in the very spot the boys were standing in.

“Dre had a board [over here],” Lil Eazy-E said, pointing to a nearby corner. He also suggested that various members of the group would crash at the spot if they were having troubles at home. The late pioneering gangsta rapper’s other son, Derrek “E3″ Wright can also be seen in the background playing video games.

Universal Pictures managed to shell out $ 56 million worth of movie tickets in the opening weekend but not everybody was happy with the way the group (namely Eazy-E) was showcased in the film. His daughter, E.B. Wright, recently tweeted out her frustrations that omitted several conquering moments in her father’s life.

Regardless, Young and Wright aren’t tripping and you shouldn’t either. Check out the mini-N.W.A history lesson below.

EXCLUSIVE: Jon Connor Talks ‘Compton’ Studio Sessions with Dr. Dre, the ‘Straight Outta Compton’ Movie, and Getting Signed to Aftermath

On Tuesday, August 11, AllHipHop.com had the wonderful opportunity to speak with Aftermath recording artist (and AHH Breeding Ground alumni), Jon Connor.  The Flint, Michigan, native’s skills and tireless dedication to his craft have really been paying off as late.  Not only did he sign with the legendary Dr. Dre, but he also made two outstanding contributions to Dre’s Compton offering.connor-dre

During our conversation, Connor, among other things, broke down what its like working with one of the best producers to ever do it, shared memories of being on the set for Straight Outta Compton, and hinted that he has more dope music on the way.

One of the things he said to me while wrapping up was, “At the end of the day, I’m a fan of Hip-Hop just like everybody else.  I’m one of the people.”  And that is something which, even with all his success, has never evaded him.

If Connor continues to build on his already strong pillars of talent, respect for Hip-Hop culture, and gratitude for his fans, he will have a long and successful career which surpasses the competition.

It’s still Aftermath and there ain’t goin’ be nothin’ after that!

AllHipHop.com: Thank you so much for taking time to speak me and AllHipHop.com.  We really appreciate it.  You and I have talked before and that was a real pleasure, so I’ve been looking forward to this interview.

Jon Connor: I want to say back, the same thing with you all.  It’s mutual.  I appreciate you all and the way you have always supported me from day one.  It’s always a pleasure, man.

First off, congratulations on the Compton album.  Are you pleased with the response it has been getting?

Yes, there has been an overwhelming love.  And just knowing that everybody has been so excited and finally we get this project from Dre that people have been waiting so long for.  The love is overwhelming; the response has been amazing.  And the way it’s going hand-in-hand with the Straight Outta Compton movie, you couldn’t ask for a better platform or set up.

I’ve seen social media pics of you, Dre, and others in the studio where you’ve referred to yourself as a “student.”  What would you say is the greatest lesson you’ve learned from these sessions?

There’s so many because, with Dre, Dre is the greatest producer of all-time.  For me, he’s like the Quincy Jones of Hip-Hop.  So the thing is, everyday you’re constantly learning.  I’d say one of the greatest things I’ve learned from Dre is that greatness is in the details.  Don’t let anything slide.  If you’re tired or haveDre, Game, Jon Connor been working for 12 hours and are ready to go to sleep, you still put in the same effort and the same time as when you first got there.  Work your hardest until you can barely keep your eyes open.  If you have to go through every song and comb through every lyric and melody and harmony and cadence, you do it because he [Dr. Dre] has a commitment to greatness.  We all call Dr. Dre the greatest of all-time and I’m just fortunate and blessed enough to be able to be at the studio and understand why.  I’ve always thought I had a grind and hard work ethic in me, but, by being around Dre, it just got taken to another level.

Just to follow up with that, to paint a picture, have you been in the studio with Dre where you’ve watched him make a beat?  Or has it been where he has pulled up an instrumental and asked you to write to it?  How does that whole process work?

That process is actually different from record to record.  There are joints where I was actually there for the conception of the music.  Like “One Shot One Kill,” I was there when that beat got made.  “One Shot One Kill” is like my baby *laughs*.  I watched it go from an idea and a sample to the addition of the live instrumentation and Snoop and everything that it eventually ended up becoming.  But it’s different from record to record, Dre is the type of cat where it’s all based on the feel.  If he’s feeling it and the vibe and the energy is there… he doesn’t care how the creative process happens.  The one common denominator in every record is that the vibe and positive energy is there.

That’s actually a great segue into one of my other questions.  What went through your head when you first found out that you were given song credit as the lead performing artist on “One Shot One Kill” as opposed to just being a guest feature?

I still don’t know if that has completely soaked into my brain.  It’s crazy.  I have a record with me featuring Snoop Dogg on Dr. Dre’s last album.  That’s beyond anything I could have ever dreamed.  It feels amazing.  Statik Selektah hit me and he said, “You are forever etched in Hip-Hop history.”  And the magnitude of that statement, I don’t know if I’ll ever really be able to fathom or truly understand it.  All I know is that it’s an amazing feeling and honestly it’s hard for me to even put it in words.

And then, of course, there’s “For the Love of Money”  which you also appear on.  Prior to telling a friend about this interview, he sent me a screenshot of his phone with that song highlighted and a caption which read “This song is on repeat.”  He told me how he looked you up, and I said that I’d been following your work for years.  You’re satisfying old fans and getting new ones.  It’s a beautiful thing, bro.

And with that I want to say ‘thank you’ and tell your man I said, ‘thank you‘ too.  It’s an amazing time.  This is my dream.  I’m a kid from Flint, Michigan, man.  It’s one of the most poverty-stricken places in the United States and so for us to be talking about the things we’re talking about, I’m truly humbled by that and I just to let the people know there’s more where that came from and I’ll forever be thankful to Dre for giving me this platform.  And I want to thank AllHipHop because you’ve all been rocking with me for years and y’all know the grind that I’ve put down and how hard I worked for this.  And with Dre, he saw and understood me as an artist and believed in me enough to give me a platform.  I’m just humbled by all of this.

One of the things I did to prepare for this is I went back and listened to “Big Brother” off of your Best in the World series.  And listened to how you described the whole scenario where Dre signed you.  How did that situation play out?

Yo, it was three phone calls and a flight.  There was the initial call when Xzibit hit me like, “Yo, I’m gonna let Dre hear your music.”  Then the second call was, “Okay, give me 10 songs you want Dre to hear.”  Then the third call was, “Dre wants you to be in California tomorrow.”  When I got to California, I was working the whole time.  Think about it, man.  I’m from Flint.  If you’re from Flint, you think Dr. Dre lives on like Mars or Jupiter.  And so for him to like your music… he was just playing beats and I rapped every verse I ever wrote.  I was pulling out verses from high school.  I was like I’m not leaving this house until Dr. Dre falls in love with what I do.  Whatever he needed to hear, I was gonna spit it.  It got to the point where I rapped so much, he finally just stopped the music and was like, “Alright, what do you want to do?”  And that was the moment that changed my life.

Thoughts on Straight Outta Compton?

It’s crazy, my experiences with the movie because I was fortunate enough to go on the set as they were making the movie.  There’s no weirder feeling, I was on the set one day where they were shooting a scene with the characters that play Dr. Dre and his wife Nicole.  And I’m sitting in one of these chairs on set as the real Dr. Dre and Nicole are sitting in front of me.  I leaned into Dre and was like, “Man, do you feel crazy right now?”  When I got signed to Aftermath, the movie was still at its infant stage where they still coming up with the script and picking actors.  I had a chance to legitimately watch this movie grow and become what it has become…  I think people already know it’s going to be good because it’s the story of N.W.A and we all want to see it,  but just the attention to detail that Gary, Dre, and Cube put into the movie – I think it’s going to surprise people because they’ll be things about N.W.A and their relationship and how things went down that none of us as fans knew.  It’s a great movie for Hip-Hop and a great movie in the sense of just being a great movie.

Jumping back to music, do you have any more “Best in the World” stuff coming out or is your next release going to be your Aftermath debut with original music?

You know what?  I don’t want to give away too much, but just know that the things that I am working on are almost done.  And we are so close to completion, it’s crazy.  But right now though, I just want the people to enjoy Compton.  For me right now, it’s all about Dre and thirty years plus of the greatest to ever do it.  It’s Dre Day!

Roc Nation Enlists Meek Mill, Fabolous, Vic Mensa & More At Samsung Studio LA [Photos]

Roc Nation is a navy–better yet an army–and they flexed their collective muscle on Friday, June 26 to light up an exclusive concert at the Samsung LA Studio.

The private event officially kicked-off BET Awards Weekend 2015 and drew in famous faces such as E!’s Terrence J, Jaden Smith, Boris Kodjoe, Angela Simmons, new recording artist Justine Skye, Damien Dante Wayans, Jazmine Sullivan, pro soccer player Jerome Boateng, model Sean Ross, and more.

Both Casey Veggies and Vic Mensa are on the verge of releasing their debut albums Live & Grow and Traffic, respectively, and showed the crowd in attendance just why the pre-orders should be all but automatic with bubbling hits like “The Boy” and “U Mad.”

Fabolous has been going strong since he signed to the Roc and he reminded everyone that The Young O.G. Project is still a forced to be reckowned with. In the interim, DJ Mustard also manned the wheels of steels, spinning all the current heat, which not-so-ironically involves his own production.

To close the night out, Meek Milly from Philly took the stage for breezy renditions of “Check” and “Monster” as his Dreams Worth More Than Money album grows in anticipation by the day. For an added effect, he brought out Wale to perform “Clappers” because you can never have enough booty shaking moments at a show.

Sony Cancels Studio Tours In Wake Of Hacker Threats Over ‘The Interview’

Sony has canceled tours of its Culver City, Calif., studios in the wake of hacker threats which have already scuttled the release of the Seth Rogen and James Franco film, “The Interview.”

Tours were canceled last week and will not resume this year, The Hollywood Reporter said.

The two-hour guided walking tour takes guests through sound and scoring stages as well as the sets of TV shows such as “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune,” according to the website.

The studio is concerned that someone could stray from the group, TMZ reports.

As of this writing, tours through Jan. 2 are listed as “sold out” on the ticketing website, and no dates are available for purchase beyond that point.

On Wednesday, Sony canceled the release of “The Interview” after hackers who stole corporate documents, emails and other data threatened terror attacks on any theater showing the film.

The movie is a comedy about a plot to kill North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. The U.S. government reportedly believes North Korea is behind the attack and the threats.
