Emmys 2018: Milo Ventimiglia, Trevor Noah, and the Most Stylish Guys at the 70th Awards Show

Last night, the 70th annual Emmy Awards were held in Los Angeles and had everything from a surprise marriage proposal to a not-so-surprising Outstanding Drama win for—you guessed it—Game of Thrones. While there were some moments during the night that kept us on our toes, there was never a doubt which guys had the best style on the gold carpet. Below, we’ve rounded up a few of the best-dressed guys that you should definitely be taking a few style cues from the next time you need to throw on a suit.

Milo Ventimiglia

Your favorite TV dad expertly pulled off a white suit without looking like he’s trying too hard—an often impossible task. Follow Milo’s style by adding a black bowtie and exposed buttons to tone down all the white.

Justin Timberlake

We’re so glad Justin and Jessica were able to get a sitter for the Emmys, or we wouldn’t have been able to see his classic Tom Ford look walk down the red carpet. Supporting Biel in her Emmy nom for her stellar role in The Sinner, Timberlake kept it clean and classy.

Colin Jost & Michael Che

Before taking the stage at the 70th annual Emmys, the hosts both pulled off non-traditional looks. Jost showed up in a dark plum suit and Che walked down the carpet in a go-to modern looks you’ll want to try yourself in an all-black ensemble sans tie.

Trevor Noah

While not everyone can afford Trevor Noah’s Louboutins, they can still follow a few style tips from the late night host. A classic all-black tuxedo can go a long way with a crisp white shirt under it and never goes out of style. Ever.

Peter Dinklage

Emmy winner Peter Dinklage took home his third golden trophy for his role as Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones, and looked great in his suit while doing it. Shying away from the bow tie trend of the night, Dinklage opted to don a skinny tie to complement his attire.

Pinstripes may be hard to pull off, but Donald Glover, nominated for his acting, directing, and writing, along with several other nods for Atlanta, makes it look easy in a custom Gucci suit. A twist on the classic tuxedo, Glover’s stylist says that his suit was inspired by a vintage photo of a man in a striped suit and bowtie. What can’t he do?

The Most Stylish Boots of Fall 2018

Fall’s unpredictable. The onset of hurricane season brings deluges, mucky debris, and wind that whips all matter of dust and dirt at your ankles. You need kicks that can shield you from the unpredictable.

The season’s best boots are made from an array of materials, but they have two things in common: lug soles that can grip both tough terrain and slick concrete, and tall shafts that protect your ankles from brambles, puddles, and everything in between.

Heading to the trails? Check out our favorite light hikers and rugged backpacking boots.

The Stylish, Lightweight Wolverine Sneakers Every Guy Needs

As we’ve mentioned before, a wardrobe isn’t complete without a pair of hard-wearing leather boots to see you through years of muck and rain. But until Wolverine’s new 1000 Mile Original Sneaker, that kind of durability wasn’t expected from a pair of casual kicks.

These shoes show that the 135-year-old American bootmaker can hang with even the trendiest streetwear brands.

5 Pairs of Stylish Dad Sneakers That Will Instantly Upgrade Your Look

The sneakers take their name from Wolverine’s legendary 1000 Mile Boot, and they share that shoe’s signature curved collar and stitch pattern.

They’re also made in the company’s factory in Big Rapids, Michigan, where four shades of soft, unlined Horween leather are sewn to lightweight Vibram rubber soles.

A technique called cupsole construction, which effectively fuses the sole to the upper, keeps the sneakers feeling supportive—though it also means that you can’t resole them.

But that’s fine, because these things are built to outlast any shoe in your closet.

Most stylish bomber jackets of fall 2017

Now that it’s fall, the days of just wearing your button-up to work—or your favorite name-brand T-shirt when you take a fine lady out on a date—are temporarily over. The upside? It’s time to add another layer to your dashing fit.

But just because there’s a chill in the mornings doesn’t mean you have to throw on a huge parka with several sweaters underneath. The fall season is all about colors and style. For some people it’s your last chance before winter to show off your personal style flavor before it gets too nippy out. Because once that temperature starts getting disrespectfully cold, the main priority becomes staying warm as opposed to looking fashionable. (Unless you live in California or Florida or something—and if you do, then a bomber jacket is all you need.)

Point is: You’re going to need a jacket that will pop, but keep you warm at the same time. Something you can wear with a button-up shirt and tie, or just a plain T-shirt. Something that will complement joggers, jeans, and chinos. You want a bomb-looking jacket this fall. In fact, to be a little more specific, you need a bomber jacket.

Take a breeze through our top trendy bombers of fall 2017.

1. Embroidered Bomber Jacket by Zara

Zara is definitely one of best stops for style-minded guys on a budget. This slim-fit bomber has embroidered roses located on the front and back, giving it that loud look to make heads turn. Made with 100% viscose fabric, this jacket is exactly the right look for a night out with a nice pair of jeans or chinos. ($ 110.00 zara.com)

Alternatively, if you’re looking for something a little more classically styled on a similar budget, consider Zara’s burgundy faux-suede bomber. Its contrast collar and cuffs give it a varsity jacket type of feel—perfect for pairing with chinos or jeans. ($ 80.00 zara.com)

2. Alpha Industries B-15 Slim-Fit Bomber Jacket

Alpha Industries is known for producing old school-looking outerwear with that vintage heritage. This all-black number comes with a fluffy faux fur collar to keep your neck extra cozy when the wind might try to attack. When rocking this jacket, try to go for a more relaxed look—it’ll make a chill outfit appear 10 times better. ($ 150.00alphaindustries.com)

3. Denim MA1 Bomber Jacket by Topman

You have a denim jacket, but do you have a denim bomber? Combine the two for a popular look that could flow with a bunch of different styles. This streetwise bomber can even be put on with a shirt and tie, but don’t force it—a hoodie, sweatshirt, or regular tee would go nice with it as well. ($ 75.00 us.topman.com)

Courtesy Image

4. Camouflauge Bomber jacket by Zara

Guess who it is again, none other than Zara. This camo bomber is a little lighter than others, so it’s definitely not meant for an overly nippy day. But man does it stand out. Along with you being able to wear this just about anywhere, it also has zip-up pockets so you don’t have to worry about misplacing your belongings. ($ 90.00 zara.com)

Courtesy Image

5. Tan Faux Suede Bomber Jacket by Boohoo

There’s nothing like a classic suede jacket, but when you top it off with a perfect tan color to complement the fall season, you’ll instantly bring your outfit over the top. Pro tip: When you throw this smooth jacket on, make sure to keep the zipper unzipped—sometimes, it just looks better that way. ($ 66.00 us.boohoo.com)

Courtesy Image

6. Wallace & Barnes MA-1 Bomber Jacket by J. Crew

This casual bomber may look simple, but this simple is as good as it gets. If you’re looking for a versatile, laid-back look with a utilitarian edge—note that zip pocket on the left sleeve—then this jacket may be the money-maker. With zip and buttoned pockets, and a classic rib trim on the collar and cuffs, there’s just no way you can go wrong purchasing this vintage-styled piece. ($ 178.00 jcrew.com)

Courtesy Image

7. Vintage Bomber Jacket w/ Faux Shearling by Wilsons Leather

If you’re spending autumn in Milwaukee instead of Malibu, then this is the jacket for you. This vintage leather jacket not only has faux shearling on the inside and the collar, but also a removable hood. This classic bomber can be worn with just about anything, but make sure you’re sporting a nice combination with it—your best jeans and a pair of kickass boots should work—because this jacket is just a little tougher to pair than most others. This jacket runs small because of the fur, get one size above your normal if you’re on the fence. ($ 330.00 wilsonsleather.com)

Courtesy Image

8. Astor Shell MA-1 Slate bomber jacket by Kith

This sky-blue beauty may be too loud for some, but if loud is what you’re going for then this is exactly what you need. This soft-but-durable nylon bomber has a simple design, but the color does all the talking. It’s more of a spring collection piece, but you can make it a fall winner if you pair it with a pair of dark jeans, caramel leather shoes, or a camel sweater underneath to ground the rest of your outfit in more earthy tones. Hurry up and check it out before all the UNC Tar Heels fans get ahold of it. ($ 165.00 kith.com)

9. The New County Bomber Jacket in Teddy Faux Fur by Asos

Without a doubt, this plush classic is the most eye-popping, jaw-dropping jacket on the list. This smooth faux fur is so soft and cozy that you might want to wear it inside out. As for the styling: With this bomber, you won’t need an impressive shirt or pair of pants—something normal and comfortable will do just fine. ($ 151.00 asos.com)

Courtesy Image

10. Crosstown Bomber by Public Rec

This simple, straightforward, and eminently comfortable bomber jacket is ideal for adding some style points to your comfortable outfit while running errands, heading to work, or just bumming around the neighborhood on weekends. It’s stretchy, soft, and includes a few zipper pockets to stash your stuff. ($ 128, publicrecapparel.com)

The Most Breathable, Stylish Outfits for Summer Weddings

Summer weddings are occasions meant to celebrate life, love, and friendships. They’re also the perfect excuse to dance your ass off and showcase your style.

However, that’s nearly impossible if you’re sweating bullets in your go-to, year-round suit. That’s not to say all formal attire will ruin your good time. There are plenty of breathable fabrics and rich textures to keep you looking and feeling cool.

The Wedding Survival Guide

“Summer weddings should be an opportunity to showcase your personality and enjoy the weather—not dread it,” says New York-based stylist Paul Fredrick. “You just need to pick the right jacket and go from there.”

Common breathable fabrics include chambray, cotton, and seersucker, but you can find summer-friendly wool, too. With so many options, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Lucky for you, we’ve taken the guesswork out of finding the right rig to match any style. Scroll down to find yours.

To Look Sharp, but Understated

You can’t look great if you’re pitting out before the vows begin, so pick a suit in a lightweight (or “summer weight”) fabric. Chambray is ideal. It’s made of lightweight cotton with a texture that gives it depth—that’s why it’s one of the summer’s biggest trends.

“It has that casual feeling, but you’ll still look smart,” says New York-based stylist Mitsu Tsuchiya. Wear a solid shirt underneath to create contrast, and a textured shirt to add interest. Get the pants tailored with no break—where the fabric barely touches your shoe—for even more air flow. Then finish the look with a cool pair of loafers, and don’t forget to wear liners.

To Impress Your Date

A jacket is the most crucial part of your look, so invest wisely, says Fredrick. Tan colors look great in summer, and this jacket’s stretch cotton fabric will breathe and move with you throughout the evening. Wear a solid shirt underneath for a sophisticated vibe and a knit tie to add texture. Details are crucial, so don’t forget to strap on a leather watch and a pair or brown brogues for some sharp finishing touches.

To Look Casual-Cool

Seersucker is one of the lightest and most casual suits you can wear, so it’s a great choice for outdoor weddings. A solid, unexpected shade like olive is more modern than traditional stripes. If it’s a casual wedding, lose the dress tie and button-up altogether—a polo looks just as sharp, says Fredrick. Add some casual details with a NATO-strap watch and a pair of white leather sneakers.

To Make a Statement

Wearing a statement sport coat looks just as sharp as a suit, but allows for more sartorial license. If you want to turn heads, opt for a large windowpane print to show your style moxie. Give your look more complexity by adding a micro-tattersall pattern shirt.

“You can mix prints as long as they’re very different in size,” says Tsuchiya. Match them with a pair of leather loafers with no socks, and you’ll be the most stylish guy on the dance floor.

12 Stylish Swim Trunks You’ll Want to Wear This Summer

The beach is nothing if not a great equalizer. Once you take off your shirt and you’re left with only your swim trunks, everyone knows what’s going on under the hood. And finding the right pair of shorts has never been easier, thanks to more brands designing versatile and stylish trunks that won’t break the bank.

When you’re shopping for new swim trunks, consider a few simple visual tricks: Vertical stripes create the illusion of a longer, leaner frame while horizontal ones (as well as bold patterns) can appear to add bulk. Stick with dark, slimming solids if you have thicker, muscular legs. If your legs are on the smaller side, steer clear of short inseams. These work best for average-height and smaller guys who need to show more skin to look longer. More focused on style? “Navy looks great on everyone and goes with just about everything, and red has been the standard for lifeguards on both coasts since the 1960s,” says Bill Carney, director of apparel at iconic board short brand, Birdwell. “Camo is a style staple that can be worn every summer.”

Whether you want to spend $ 35 or have a little room in your budget, here are a dozen stylish, affordable swim trunks you’ll want to rock in the sun this summer.

Outerknown Apex Trunk By Kelly Slater

We’re not saying your swimwear can make you handle waves like a pro surfer, but these trunks certainly stand up to any swells the ocean throws your way. The durable and lightweight material made from recycled plastic bottles not only offers the comfort of 4-way stretch, but it’s also water resistant, so drying time is minimal once you make it back to shore.

Patagonia Wavefarer Standup Shorts

Your bag just a got a lot lighter. No need to bring extra shorts when you can wear these quick-drying swim shorts all day. Made from recycled nylon, they’re the ideal piece to transition from beach to barbecue, and the 50+ UPF protection means you don’t have to obsess over sunscreen if you’re too busy having a good time.

Birdwell 310 Board Shorts

You can’t go wrong with these OG surf shorts from the Santa Ana, CA, brand that have been worn by lifeguards and surfers for more than 50 years. The tab closure offers freedom to adjust the fit, nylon offers performance, and the classic camo print actually stands out—in the best sort of way—on the sand.

8 Stylish Denim Jackets Made Right Here in America

The denim jacket is an American classic, and its effortless versatility makes it an obvious essential; an anchor piece that’s key to building the complete men’s wardrobe. Initially created in the late 1800s California as workers’ wear, the jean jacket rose as an icon of cowboy culture in the American West, then showed up in the 20th century on the backs of Beat poets, rebel rockers and movie stars. In 1967, Levis launched its iconic trucker jacket, and over the last 50 years it has become an paradigm of American style.

Does Tbilisi, Georgia, Have the Best Shopping? A Stylish Native Shares Her Favorite Spots

If your Instagram was suddenly dotted with chic snaps hailing from Tbilisi, Georgia, this past week, it’s not a complete coincidence. Catherine Baba and Natalie Joos were among the international fashion flock who headed to the Georgian capital for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tbilisi. And when they weren’t sitting by the runway, well, there was plenty of shopping to be done. Just ask Ketevan Gvaramadze, the Georgia-native, New York City–based stylist who makes the ten-hour-plus trek back to her homeland every summer to unwind—as well as to stock up on cool local goods. After all, in Tbilisi you’ll find both a flourishing trove of concept stores with top motherland designers on offer as well as open marketplaces that sell Soviet-era antiques. Here, see Gvaramadze’s guide to help you brush up on your Georgian shopping list for whenever you should make the trek to Tbilisi yourself.

What the Most Stylish Women Wear to Work: Jewelry Designer Jennifer Fisher

jennifer fisher 9 to 5

While plenty of celebrities (Rihanna, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kim Kardashian West, to name a few) and other women in the know have clamored to dot their lobes, wrap their wrists, and clasp their necks with the covetable and edgy jewelry of Jennifer Fisher since the line’s inception in 2005, it’s also the designer’s enviable personal style that has piqued plenty of attention. As sculptural and experimental as her own statement-piece jewelry, the 2012 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist and working mom documents all on her lively Instagram feed, including her rotating inventory of outfits as she navigates the whirlwind schedule of manning her New York City–based showroom and stores. With a shock of color, a play on proportion and pattern, plenty of wit, and a stack of her own rings, Fisher shows her slew of followers that, just as with her own accessories, she’s all about the details.

But as the stylist turned jewelry designer recently explained, it’s all about a great base of denim and heels that gets her through a hard day of work and to any of the events she attends afterward. Here, Fisher reveals her favorite blues, why Fashion Week allows her to really experiment with her style, and how her jewelry dictates her workday ensembles.

The Charm of the Jewelry Business
Becoming a jewelry designer was not planned. After being a stylist for more than 10 years I was used to making custom pieces for clients when I could not find what they wanted, or I wanted, in the market. After the birth of my son Shane I scoured every high-end designer store to find the perfect piece of jewelry to wear to represent my son, and when I couldn’t find what I was looking for I went out and made my own. At the time, I was working on set and the response was so incredible that I started making similar pieces for friends and family. There was so much demand for my charm necklace that I started my own website selling the charms, necklaces, and bracelets directly from my bedroom, filling orders whenever I was not on set. It turned out there were thousands of women and men looking for the same bespoke pieces of fine jewelry and my business was born.

Daily Routine
My typical workday begins after I drop my children off at school and I’m usually in the office by 9:00 a.m., unless there is an out-of-office meeting. My day is a mix of different responsibilities. I am always working with my in-house PR team on what items are being pulled for certain celebrities and magazines. I always weigh in on the pulls. Because of my earlier career, I am familiar with what stylists need on set, so I like to always add a few extra pieces in the mix. Then there is a production meeting so I can be updated on the status of my designs for outside projects, collaborations, and, of course, planning for the next season.

I always like to pop into the store space during client appointments to see what people are buying and what they would like to see added to the line—it’s the best way to gauge the marketplace and what direction we should be leaning in for the next season. I always try to design for at least two hours a day. We have many more pieces per season because of the brass and the fine line, so it’s necessary to keep up on both collections. These days I am attending dinners or events most nights, but I always run home after work to see my kids before I go out. I’m an avid cook, so I make most dinners for them and it gives us some time to spend together before I have to dash.

It’s All About That Bling-Bling
My workwear definitely changed with careers, but the shift was seamless. I have always been informal in dressing down designer pieces for day to night, so my wardrobe hasn’t changed much except I was a bit more L.A. when I started—now it’s moved into a more minimal New York feel. I always base my look off of the jewelry I want to wear for the day or night and go from there. I have noticed that over the last few seasons I have started to pull away from piling on so much jewelry, though. Lately I’m favoring one statement cuff and one finger stacked with multiple rings over a ton of jewelry everywhere.

I always rotate the fine jewelry I wear on a daily basis; for instance, I am constantly readjusting my signature charms onto different length chains. However, my go-to earrings are our diamond pin front and back earrings; they’re my favorite update to the daily diamond stud. I am also never without a stack of my customized burnished cuffs. I love to mix the fine jewelry with the brass jewelry. I’m loving the idea of the single statement earring right now, specifically my silver-plated brass version, as well as my Chaos collection from Spring 2016. One earring worn with an earcuff on the opposite ear and one finger with multiple stacked rings stacked is my favorite evening look right now.

A Denim Girl at Heart (and Work)
I love denim, so most days it’s denim for me, which ranges from either my favorite hand-painted pair from Trico Field to my long-cuffed wide-leg Chloé jeans to my high-waisted Gucci with gold military buttons, or my favorite Frame Denim Le Garcon high-waisted flares. I elevate them by wearing a Gucci or Chloé silk blouse. Adding one of those and a heel instantly changes the look and lets me go from day to night. I bought an amazing J.W.Anderson black-and-white velvet top, as well as a silver metallic top—these are my current two favorites for going out. With a pop of color from my new Loewe orange red wristlet, I’m good to go!

I’ve been adding knits from Tome and a red marketed knit from Balenciaga, which is my current fall favorite. I like knits that are chunky yet structured, which can sometimes be hard to find. I love this new Mira Mikati coat that the designer gifted me in Paris—it’s the perfect gray-green coat that has Hello and OMG in felt in multiple colors; it matches everything. I also purchased a few new Sacai jackets. I am a collector of Sacai—basically, anything Sacai goes in my closet. My jackets range from puffy bombers to leather and cotton army green swing coats. Also, The Row for simple black dresses, and Dries Van Noten and Marni for prints.

The Shoes, the Bags
I am never a flats girl—it’s just not my thing. If I have early meetings I will leave my house in heels and throw a pair of sneakers in my bag. For heels it’s all about Loewe, Céline, Chloé, and Vetements for fall. I just got the Loewe Column Ring ankle boots with the gray, white, and blue–striped toe and they are so comfortable and work day to night. I also keep a pair of Céline slides under my desk that are my work “slippers.” No matter what I’m wearing I always throw those on and off during the workday. I hate being formal at my desk, so changing is always a must. Sometimes I change in and out of an outfit a couple of times a day so I don’t have to sit in it! I have my own closet in the office that I hang everything in.

I always have a cross-body bag on me: It makes everything easier for days when I am on the move from morning until night. I have multiple colors of the Céline Cabas tote that I throw my laptop in, along with anything I need for the day. Right now, I’m loving the bright blue version. My new favorite is a Louis Vuitton that I picked up during Paris Fashion Week with silver hardware. I also keep multiple Edie Parker clutches at work—they double as bookshelf art for my office.

Beauty Lewks
In case I need to go to an impromptu dinner or event, I keep an extra cocktail dress and multiple pairs of shoes at the office! I also keep an extra set of all my makeup, plus a few good red lip options and beauty cleansing products at my office. Otherwise, my work beauty look is always clean and minimal. I use Chantecaille tinted moisturizer daily and Tatcha eye gel masks, regardless if I’ve been out the previous night. I hate the feeling of foundation or makeup on my skin while working, so my morning routine is very basic. Moisturizer, brows, done! I have eyelash extensions, which make you look more bright and awake instantly.

The Weekend Chill
I’m with my children all weekend shuffling them to their soccer and basketball games, so I need to be mobile. I tend to stick to sneakers during the day, wearing my Alexander McQueen version of the Stan Smiths, or the Adidas Originals I customized with gold backs. I love to use the weekends to experiment with fun sunglasses as they are one of my favorite accessories. Currently I have three pairs in rotation: my Illesteva collaboration Holly frames, Loewe, or the Céline bright orange red frames. Of course.

Fashion Week Is Another Story Altogether
Fashion Week is a time to play with clothing that I might not normally think of mixing. I always have a rack that I keep out in my dressing room with a week’s worth of options. I love to pull out old favorites and use new pieces: It’s almost like the “no fear” week and anything goes. Plus it’s a great excuse to purchase a few new pieces! I also always like to wear a beanie during Fashion Week—my favorites are from Marc Jacobs. I buy all the colors every season and even double up on a few of my favorites—inevitably one goes missing in a taxi or an Uber! I attended Spring 2016 London Fashion Week as an ambassador for Net-a-Porter’s The Net Set. As the only designer who is a member of their Style Council I was thrilled to have the opportunity to experience the collections in this way; I found the shows there incredibly inspiring. Christopher Kane, Emilia Wickstead, and Erdem were the highlights of the trip and opened me up to wanting to try and wear more floral and take more color risks for spring.

The Best Designer Deodorants: Because Breaking a Sweat Can Be Stylish

designer deodorant

When better than fashion month to test-drive designer deodorant? Granted, antiperspirant sticks are not the most glamorous topic of conversation this time of year, but you’d be surprised by how many fashion editors want to hear about them. “Wait, what does that mean?” asks one when I tell her about the weeklong assignment. “Oh, tell me what you find out,” says another.

First of all, it means exactly what it sounds like: deodorant with designer labels. Who knew brands even make them? But they do, as a pretty standard component of their beauty businesses. In this case, we’re talking Donna Karan Cashmere Mist, Acqua di Parma Colonia spray, Valentino Uomo, Carven Le Parfum, and Tom Ford Neroli Portofino—each arriving beautifully packaged and surprisingly gender neutral fragrances. As for whether or not they work, well, I hate to spoil the surprise, but the deodorants function basically as deodorants. I guess that’s the good news. They could leave me stinking up Spring Studios. But they don’t. They all do their job, and so, in the same way there are hundreds of red lipsticks but you swear by only one, partiality in designer deodorant comes down to personal preference.

There are, however, some nuanced differences. Karan’s Cashmere Mist, for instance, is white and chalky and rubs off on my cherry red Creatures of the Wind tank top. When I tell this to a friend who regularly heads to the gym with Cashmere Mist in her bag, she shares that besides genuinely liking its powdery scent, using it makes her feel “like the kind of person who really has her shit together.” So there you go. Tomayto tomahto.

Carven’s version comes in a pale pink bottle and, like the Acqua di Parma, is a spray, which I find a little awkward. I accidentally spritz it into my eye. Once I perfect my aim, its smell is so overtly floral that wonder if I’m just misting perfume under my arms and in an hour, I’ll be scrambling to reapply. But after a 12-hour day and a hot, steamy, jam-packed Alexander Wang after-party, I’m happy to report I’ve yet to sweat through my silk Crippen top.

My favorite is Tom Ford, primarily because I covet the Neroli Portofino scent. It makes me feel a) like one of Ford’s Glamazons and b) like I’m on the Amalfi coast, not waiting for the A train. Luckily, like the others, it too keeps me dry and odor free and, even better, because it’s transparent, it poses no danger to my Dries van Noten blouse.

Of course the big question here is, Yeah but what do they cost? That’s fair. Ford’s version is $ 50. Which is a little much considering I’m used to shelling out less than three bucks for Tom’s of Maine at Trader Joe’s. The others hover around $ 25 to $ 35—still more expensive than my go-to but not nearly as prohibitive as I feared. In fact, when you think about it, it’s about the cost of a fancy tube of lipstick.

The Best ’90s Movie Makeovers Are Still Totally Stylish Today

she's all that movie still

Oh, to go to high school in the nineties. Remember? Back then the educational institution was more of an everything-goes playground in which crop tops never violated the student dress code, heartthrob Andrew Keegan was not in a kombucha-brewing cult, and everyone knew how—and when—to break out into a synchronized dance routine. Well, at least in the movies. But the most important part of the slumber party favorite flicks? Every nerdy protagonist was granted a geek-to-chic makeover. Maybe it requires a dye job and a tube top like Jawbreaker’s Fern Mayo, or a bohemian rhapsody of a prom dress like Never Been Kissed’s Josie Geller, and maybe it’s the wisdom of experience, but most of these “before” looks aren’t so bad either. But the time has come for a trip down memory lane, so cue up that Smash Mouth, take off those glasses, shake out that messy bun, and get ready for homeroom: We’ve got the best movie makeovers from the decade—and the today-ready takes that will get you an A+.

10 Backpacks That Prove Hands-Free Is the Most Stylish Way to Be

Photographed by Phil Oh

“You won’t use it, Lynn! You’ll never put it on your back, and it’s kind of awkward on your arm,” says my friend and shopping compatriot MH (hint—he works at Vogue) when I try on a heart-melting black nylon Prada backpack that has been dusted with pink rosebuds.

(And for all of you who saved your stacks of Prada nylon knowing that the day would come when you would want to wear these again, two things: 1. Yes, they are back in style! Whatever that really means. But 2. Alas, old nylon, no matter how well preserved, looks kind of old, so there was really no point in keeping these on the top of the closet for fifteen years—you will want a new one.)

MH reminds me of the Junya Fair Isle knitted backpack I bought a few winters ago and insists that I never used it, but that is not true! I have distinct memories of this lovely item dangling from my elbow at least twice.

Here is the thing: If you are a sporty sylph in sleek pants and a sharp sweater, a backpack on your back is a lovely, jaunty accessory. And, I allege, if you are not that person, if your look du jour is a big funny dress, it is fine to pretend one of these is a handbag with, OK, a couple of extra straps. Because when you see something you really, really want, life is all about compromise.

Here, Vogue.com’s backpacks for every woman (and even the occasional guy who shops on the girls’ side of the store).

What the Most Stylish Women Wear 9 to 5: Meet Fashion Blogger and Social Media Director Juliana Salazar

Juliana Salazar 9 to 5

Juliana Salazar always loved fashion; she just never saw it as a career. “I always thought of fashion as a pastime,” says Salazar, who studied business at George Washington University instead. “I guess I wasn’t really thinking of my actual future when I should have been, because it got to the point where I hated all my classes and all I was doing was looking at stuff online.” One day, bored in class and particularly smitten with a dress she glimpsed online, Salazar decided to start a blog, Made in Chicistan, to chronicle her passion. When that site started taking off, Salazar realized she might be onto something: Fashion could be more than a hobby. And the rest, as they say, is history—after college, she went on to work for Intermix and eventually landed at luxury store Hirshleifers, where she is social media director. Here, the jill-of-all-trades tells us how she approaches dressing for everything from market appointments to Instagram shoots to Fashion Week after-parties.

Mood Dressing
I’m social media director at Hirshleifers, a specialty luxury store. Within the past year since I started, I think our digital audience has increased by 300 percent. I also help with buying and with creative projects too—ways to up our social presence so we can progress and stay modern. I’m kind of a social brand ambassador—Hirshleifers is a huge business but it’s very tightly run, so going to fashion shows is not something they did before I came on board. It’s funny, people ask me what I do and I never know exactly how to explain it—it doesn’t fit that neatly into a job title.

I dress depending on my mood and what I have going on for the day. Today it’s raining and gross out, so I’m wearing slouchy pants [from Calypso St. Barth] and a slouchy denim button-down [from Current/Elliott] and sneakers [from Saint Laurent]. I feel like I’m in my pajamas. I wear a lot of denim shirts—they’re just easy to throw on. My Canadian tuxedo is like my sweatsuit—like when I don’t want to think about anything but I can’t wear sweatpants to work, that’s what I throw on. I’m all about comfort. I never wear anything where I feel like I can’t breathe, but I don’t like looking like a bum either.

Last week, I was having a terrible week and I thought, I need to do something to change this, so I put on these bright yellow silk wide-leg pants from Rag & Bone—like, hopefully this brings the sunshine in. I wore them with a denim top from Gap and strappy sandals from Dolce Vita. People say dress for the job you want—dress for whatever it is you want—and it’s kind of true. For instance with the yellow pants, I got so many comments on them; even guys on the street were making funny little comments about my bright yellow pants. It’s things like that that can actually help take your mind off of whatever is actually bothering you. Fashion is not a serious thing at all; it should be fun.

Instagram Style
Hirshleifers is such a hidden gem and my job is to expose it as the jewel that it is. My day-to-day usually involves shooting pieces for our website, Instagram, and blog—I’m also basically the in-house model so there are days when I’m trying on clothes all day. When it comes to our Instagram, I notice that people are really into labels—I’ll post a Louboutin and even when it’s nothing special, that red sole will still get a thousand likes. Same with the Alexander McQueen skull scarves. Whereas then I’ll post a really sick Céline scarf and it won’t even break 100 likes. I guess you have to know your audience, especially if what you’re after is user engagement.

For my personal Instagram, I try not to think about it too much. If I really like what I’m wearing, I’ll post my little selfie in my hallway. But if I think too much about it then I second-guess myself and I feel dumb. Instagram, when it’s personal, has to be done on a whim for me. I’ve actually gotten styling gigs through friends who have seen me on Instagram.

Contrast Is Key
I’m all about contradictions—I love, for example, a really feminine flirty skirt or a little lace dress with sneakers. Or if I’m wearing boyfriend jeans and a T-shirt, I’ll wear really sharp oxfords. I rely a lot on statement accessories. I’m obsessed with these Dries Van Noten shoes that have cowrie shell straps—one strap is red snakeskin-stamped leather, with a wooden sole. They’re such a standout shoe, but I wear them with everything. Another recent go-to is these Sophia Webster heels that are pretty crazy—they’re black and white with pink racing stripes. They look amazing with just a plain white T-shirt and jeans.

During the workweek I wear a pretty big bag because I have to carry my laptop: The bag I’m carrying right now is from Ready-made, a Japanese company that uses all U.S. Army recycled materials. It looks like a Birkin but it’s made from all this vintage army material and in a way, it’s so much cooler—I Googled some of the sayings on mine, and it turned out that it was made from material from a warship in World War II.

Wearing H&M to Chloé
Then there are days when I’m going to market appointment after market appointment, and there, I’m representing Hirshleifers so I try to wear things that are more current instead of just my favorite shirt from however long ago. During market week recently, I wore this off-the-shoulder blue top that I really love. It’s from H&M, if you can believe it. I was literally stopped at every appointment—I felt so bad, I was in Chloé telling them about my shirt from H&M. But when it’s good, it’s good! I wore it with these Zara wide-leg gaucho pants in a baby-blue denim.

All day I’m surrounded by all these really amazing clothes—but let’s face it, I can’t afford everything. So I’ll do my research and see what’s out there, what my best option is. If anything is too much of a designer knock-off, I won’t buy it.

During Fashion Week I have access to a lot more things that I wouldn’t normally get to wear because brands will lend me: I got to wear this awesome Chanel tweed dress that was my favorite thing ever; and another day I wore a full Céline look. But if you feel comfortable in something it exudes confidence, and sometimes actually just a basic outfit will do that best. Recently during Fashion Week, I had shows all day and then I went to a Kanye West concert, and then to the Stella McCartney after-party. I wore a black blazer, boyfriend jeans, and comfy Chelsea boots—very laid-back. It wasn’t that special, but I felt very cool in it. You know how some clothes you put on and you kind of have a “pimp walk” in them? That makes all the difference.

Just in Time for Summer, 28 Stylish New Watches

Photographed by Patrick Demarchelier, Vogue, February 2014

The platinum and diamond watch that F. Scott Fitzgerald gave his fiancée Zelda Sayre in 1920 did not measure her heartbeats or tally her burned calories. It cost $ 600, a fortune at the time, it was inscribed From Scott to Zelda, and the recipient, during one of the couple’s vicious arguments, threw it from a train window a few years later. (Think of it—walking along the tracks somewhere in the middle of nowhere, you might yet find this thing, or so I have always hoped.)

Wearing a little clock on your wrist in Zelda’s era was an indispensible tool—how are you going to show up for tea at the Biltmore or meet your beloved for an illicit dip in the Pulitzer Fountain if you don’t know what time it is? Now we have a perfectly reliable timekeeper in our phone, an instrument that is ever in our palms (even at funerals! At job interviews! Put that thing away!), which means that the wristwatch, in addition to marking the hours, must offer a whole lot more than mere ticking! It must be breathtakingly stylish, or at least wildly interesting—sure, it can bring us our emails, map the quickest route from the Louvre to Galeries Lafayette, and pay for our groceries, but will it give your chic twenty-first-century outfit a jolt, a bang, of pure delight?

Here our candidates for the toniest tickers, circa summer 2015.

What the Most Stylish Women Wear 9 to 5: Meet Whitney Tingle and Danielle Duboise of Sakara Life

sakara life

Whitney Tingle and Danielle Duboise, cofounders of the organic food delivery service Sakara Life, might just be their own best advertisement: The preternaturally photogenic, blonde, and trim duo don’t just look healthy and happy, they glow. “We eat the Sakara food every single day,” says Duboise. “We talk a lot about the idea of something tasting pretty. It’s one thing to eat really well and it’s another thing to make sure you enjoy eating well.” Since its launch in 2011, Sakara Life’s deliciously good-for-you meals have built up a cult following—so much so that Duboise and Tingle recently expanded the business to Los Angeles, with more surely to come. While they’re definitely ambitious when it comes to Sakara Life, these entrepreneurs are certainly not afraid to have fun—a dichotomy that plays out in their working wardrobe. From swapping clothes, to taking risks and dressing like a boss, Tingle and Duboise give us the scoop on what they wear nine to five.

Dressing the Part
Whitney Tingle: We just moved offices and we have a team that’s growing really fast, so every day we start with a check-in with our team. We’re in the office every day and checking in with all the different departments. Our roles are really around business development—making decisions, asking questions . . .
Danielle Duboise: . . . Putting out fires; maybe creating a little fire!
Whitney: I used to work on Wall Street in a corporate environment and I was really confined in terms of what I could wear. It was a lot of suits, and things like that. Having our own start-up right now, I can wear whatever I want and I take advantage of that. I use it as a form of self-expression: wake up in the morning and just feel whatever I’m feeling and throw something together. But I still have a lot of pieces from working on Wall Street, so I’ll mix them in: I might wear high-waisted black jeans with a crop top and then throw on a classic blazer. It’s business but business-sexy.
Duboise: I think it’s really important when you’re in start-up mode to dress for the occasion and take it seriously, even when you’re busy and you could really just be in your PJs and yoga clothes. What I’ve found is that when you feel good in your clothes, it changes your energy. Our office is full of girls, and we have to set the pace. I love Mara Hoffman jumpsuits because I only have to pull one thing and I really love Cushnie et Ochs when I’m feeling a little more serious. I feel like a badass businesswoman in those jumpsuits.
Tingle: One thing about Danielle is she kind of likes to make people feel a little uncomfortable. Sometimes she’ll wear things that are a bit weird—she’ll wear, say, a statement piece from Moschino to the office.
Duboise: Whitney wore a fanny pack to the office the other day! But I think that’s also part of setting the energy of the office, you know, to encourage thinking outside the norm and making sure everything is done with intention and creativity. Plus, we’re from Sedona, Arizona, so we kind of have that hippie vibe. We wear a lot of cowboy boots!
Tingle: I wore the fanny pack with high-waisted black jeans from Topshop, with a vintage belt that has silver conchos on it and a tank; a sort of Southwestern vibe.
Duboise: It’s a hippie vibe but we dress it up a bit. I haven’t worn flats in years.
Tingle: Even our flip-flops have heels in them!
Duboise: I’m a platform girl. I just need my shoes to be comfortable and have height. I have a pair from 3.1 Phillip Lim that are really comfortable; they have a chain around the ankle and are really cute.

Walking Advertisement
Tingle: Some days we have to go up to our kitchen and work with our people there—we’re currently under construction so we’re up there a lot making decisions. I think it’s important that the kitchen understands the brand just as much as the girls in the office, so we typically don’t change to go up there, even though we’re sometimes inventing new recipes and getting dirty.
Duboise: Whitney got spirulina on her white pants the other day! Even so, I agree: It’s important that the kitchen understands the vibe and the inspiration about it all, so the only thing that changes when we’re in there is we have to wear hairnets.
Tingle: Otherwise we’re just in our regular office gear, which, when it’s hot out, is usually flowy pants and a tube top. The tube top is great because you don’t have to wear a bra. The less to worry about, the better.
Duboise: I just got these cool pants from a vintage store that are bright, bright blue and are perfect for the heat; they’re literally two pieces of fabric sewn together with ties in the front and back. We both wear a lot of vintage and go to What Comes Around Goes Around a lot. I’d say half my closet is vintage. I really love pieces that have a history, especially jewelry. I wear a lot of my mother’s and grandmother’s pieces.
Tingle: We’re also really into stones and crystals—things that come from the earth. We’re friends with Bliss Lau and her jewelry is really sexy. I wear a gold quartz ring from her everyday.
Duboise: I have this chain bra from her—but I don’t wear it everyday!
Tingle: In terms of bags, the only thing we ever carry are the Sakara Life totes. I haven’t had a real bag in years.
Duboise: It’s free advertising!
Tingle: We definitely keep in mind how our own personal images reflect the brand.  But I think what we try to do is be as much as ourselves as possible.
Duboise: And as much thought as we put into things, we’re also the girls who will show up with a wrinkle in our pants and messy hair.
Tingle: That’s kind of how our brand is too: We’re a premium luxury brand, but we’re definitely a little messy and totally approachable.

Partners Who Dress Together, Stay Together
Duboise: When we have important meetings or events to go to, we typically like to match in all white. We started wearing white a lot when we started the company just kind of the brand color. If we’re going to meet new investors we want to make a strong impression. So we show up in all white and looking sharp. I’ll wear a white blazer with these wide-leg pants and a white linen shirt that’s cropped and boxy. And Whitney’s usually in skinny jeans and a blazer.
Tingle: For the launch of our L.A. office, we wore matching white silk dresses from Shareen that had a really low cut and a halter tie. They were so low we had to wear a bikini underneath—good thing it was a pool party! For evening, we pull a lot from Naeem Khan; he has amazing stuff. I just wore a sparkly sequin dress from him the other night.
Duboise: It’s bad, sometimes we’ll show to the office in the exact same thing and we’re like . . . oh. It happens all the time. We’re also basically the same size and shoe so we share a lot of things.
Tingle: Sometimes it’s not by choice. I have a pair of shoes that I loaned Danielle ages ago and she still has not returned them. I think it’s rubbed off in the girls in the office. We’ll leave some clothes at the office in case we need to change—someone borrowed one of my cardigans and I’m pretty sure I won’t be getting that back!
Duboise: That’s the nice thing about having an office full of women. It’s basically a big closet.

What the Most Stylish Women Wear 9 to 5: Meet Fashion Consultant Roopal Patel

roopal patel 9 to 5

Fashion consultant Roopal Patel’s resumé reads like a who’s who of the luxury retail world: Her stints include serving as senior fashion director at Bergdorf Goodman, senior fashion director for Neiman Marcus and the executive fashion director at Moda Operandi. Now that she’s on her own at Roopal Patel Consulting, Patel is bringing her hard-won expertise to an array of clients. And as a mentor to designers in the CFDA, she believes in spreading the wealth of knowledge; recently she hosted a Pay it Forward dinner, bringing together fledgling and established designers to build a strong support system. “The more information designers can have and the more connections that are made for them, the better they are,” she says. “In the end, it helps all of us.” Patel’s philosophy is in sharp contrast to fashion’s stereotypical reputation. “People always say to me, ‘Oh my god, you work in such a cutthroat industry,’ ” says Patel. “Actually, fashion is a very nurturing industry. We take care of our own and we support each other.” Here, Patel tell us her work wardrobe philosophy.

Up for a Challenge
Most of my day is dedicated to meeting and seeing clients. I usually start my day with a workout and then I might have a breakfast meeting and then run to the office for a few hours, then a lunch meeting, and then I might head to showrooms and walk through a collection. I try to have a day-to-evening component to my outfit, because I often have to meet clients for cocktails or go to an event.

Right now I’m obsessed this Altuzarra striped shirtdress. I could live in that. It’s really beautiful to wear during the day. With my Mansur Gavriel bag and Céline wedges, it’s a little bit more work-oriented. For evening, I’ll swap the wedges for great Alaïa sandals, and carry a graphic Celine clutch—easy changes that allow you to feel more dressed up. I also love Proenza Schouler’s long skirts with pleats or fringe because you can wear them casually in the day with a short jacket and a chunky sneaker or you can dress them up with a strappy heel and a great leather jacket.

I have two sides to my personality and fashion supports that—one side is very minimal and the other side is colorful and vibrant and loves prints. I can wear a superchic white crisp tuxedo shirt from Céline with Céline black tuxedo pants and feel really confident and professional without standing out too much. But when I go out at night I like to be a little bit more daring, so I’ll wear a bold stripe from Rosie Assoulin or one of her floral patterns—you know, have fun with it, which is what I think fashion is about. Fashion influences me, or rather it challenges me, to wear novelty items that I might not otherwise. For instance, that Céline fringe sweater—I still haven’t figured out how to wear that but I’m up for the challenge.

Different Cities, Different Clothes
I travel a lot for work—sometimes I’m meeting with clients in Paris, Los Angeles, or London, and when I’m there my schedule is much more hectic. No day is the same. Even if I plan my day, it’s so unpredictable. I have a tendency to overpack because it’s been my experience that you can be called to a great cocktail party at the last minute or have three extra days added to your original itinerary. So more is better. I like to have a couple classic go-to dresses and blazers. I love a good white jean from Rag & Bone—I always travel in a white jean for some reason, with a great black sweater or black turtleneck from The Row that’s cozy and a little blazer. And then I take Céline espadrilles in leopard or high-top Vans.

I absolutely dress differently in different cities. In New York City, I tend to dress up with heels and a great dress. When you go to L.A. the vibe is a bit more mellow and low-key. The culture is much more jeans and T-shirt, which is still a little foreign for me being a New Yorker. So in L.A., I always take my Vans out, and I might pair those with an Isabel Marant miniskirt or a little sweater or a denim jacket or a cargo jacket—very relaxed and casual. In London or Paris, it’s not as fashion. That’s where my minimal fashion sensibility comes in. It’s a bit more classic, a bit more tailored.

Pay It Forward
With evening I always like to wear something unique and special and maybe a little under the radar. Last month I hosted a Pay It Forward dinner that brought together a great group of designers from Derek Lam, Suno, the Tome boys, Rosie Assoulin, Misha Nonoo—the idea being that they could ask each other questions about the business and just connect and relate at a time between collections when everyone has a little time for that. To that I wore a Katie Ermilio two-piece ensemble: a beaded bandeau (basically a very chic beaded bustier top) with a full embroidered skirt, Alaïa shoes and a cuff from Dezso by Sara Beltrán.

I tend to gravitate towards separates for evening, I like to not be so traditional. I love jumpsuits and tuxedos. I think the key to wear a tuxedo is to pay attention to proportion. It’s all about proportion. And with tuxedos there’s always a tendency to feel too clean, so I think you really have to get the right shoe—maybe a velvet shoe from Gianvito Rossi, or a deep satin purple, or a great pink—to add a little twist and adding a little shine with jewelry or a clutch. I like novelty clutches, or something with a bold pattern. As for jewelry, I’m pretty minimal. I wear Gaia Repossi’s stacked rings and I love a cuff—Maiyet has a great one and I love the Elsa Peretti for Tiffany’s one. For me, one great piece of jewelry is enough.

When it comes to building her wardrobe, Aï Bihr certainly has a lot of options. As Steven Alan’s creative director, Bihr has a whole store’s worth of goodies right at her fingertips — and is in the enviable position of being able to actually create exactly the kind of garment she’d like to wear. And if that wasn’t enough to make you wish you were in her shoes, Bihr speaks multiple languages, has lived in Tokyo, Paris, Los Angeles, and New York, holds degrees in both neuroscience and pattern-making. Here, she gives us the scoop on what she wears to work.

Test Market

On a work day, I try to wear mostly Steven Alan because it’s good for me to wear what we’ve made; if we need to improve something or if something’s not working great, then I know it. I love to wear a big Steven Alan shirt — I usually get something a bit oversize. So I’ll wear a men’s extra-large reverse seam in white, with a pair of jeans we’ve made. I also have a lot of old Levi’s because I collect a lot of denim. I love a 501, but I like to buy a big men’s size and then cut the legs so they’re kind of wide and cropped. I go to a lot of vintage stores to hunt for them; when I lived in Paris I went every weekend to look at the flea markets. I’m also a big vintage eyewear collector and have really loved designing the Steven Alan Optical collection.

On my feet, I usually have sneakers or oxfords. Or like, a penny loafer. My whole team knows I’m addicted to these Japanese high tops called Shoes Like Pottery. I wear them constantly, year round. I don’t want to be boring, but I always look the same! Even if there’s a corporate event or I have to make a presentation, I always look the same. I try to stay very consistent and have been very consistent for a long time. I’ve always worn a lot of jumpsuits–whatever brand I go to, I make jumpsuits for them. They’re kind of great because they’re so versatile. You can even tie the sleeves at the waist and they make really great pants that way. I have a nice collection of vintage jumpsuits, some from the Yves Saint Laurent Safari collection, and I’ll wear those tied at the waist or zip them up and belt them. And if I’m wearing a jumpsuit like that I might add a little heeled sandal. Maryam Nassir Zadeh makes beautiful shoes. If I do go to a party and I feel like wearing something a little bit different I’ll put on sandals from Maryam. One of my best friends, Mona, designs A Détacher and she makes really beautiful skirts and dresses. I recently bought an indigo skirt/culotte thing from her. It’s the perfect length and so good for summer parties.

Dress for the Seasons

When the weather is this hot and humid, I love to wear linen and cotton poplin. We have these really great cotton poplin wide trousers from Steven Alan called the Picnic Pant. When you wear a wide-leg trouser like that, it’s nice to wear something small on top. You can’t wear something too big, or else you look like a tent. It’s also a great pant to wear with a linen T-shirt.

In the fall, I’m usually in a suit. I’ll wear a suit jacket and a pair of trousers, with a T-shirt and sneakers. I have a few different jacket styles that I really like–one is a schoolboy that’s a bit smaller; The Row makes a really nice one every year. And then I like a boyfriend notched lapel in tropical wool; it’s actually the first jacket I made for Steven Alan when I joined the company and it’s still my go-to. I also always love to have a peak lapel double-breasted blazer. I think the key to pulling off a suit is–well, first of all you just really have to find the right suit for you. But then you also have to have a more casual element in your accessories or what you’re wearing the suit with, like a T-shirt and sneakers.

Quality Control

When I’m shopping for myself, I always look at the finishing of the garment. I’m looking on the inside, not just the outside, examining the fabric, rubbing it on my neck and doing all the crazy things that designers do. You want to make sure there’s a clean finish–basically, that you don’t see all this thread wrapped around the seam–so that it doesn’t look like things are going to snag. It’s good to pay attention to these kinds of things, because they’re going to dictate the longevity of the garment. And really touch the fabric. Customers aren’t stupid, they know when they’re feeling good fabric. This is why we choose to use really good fabric at Steven Alan, because our customers are smart. They know they’re not getting garbage from us. That’s one thing I’m really proud of: There’s no room for poor quality. I’m really proud to say that more than 90 percent of the things I make are made in New York. And if it’s not made here, it’s made at the best factory in Japan.

Why You Should Judge a Book by Its Cover: The 9 Stylish Poets Inspiring Our Summer Style

Photo: Getty Images

To be a poet means careful consideration of each word laid down on paper—rhythm, aesthetic presentation, and soul. And for many writers, this attention to detail translated to their fashion choices off the page too: Be it a carefully placed brooch here, the right shade of nail polish there, or a patterned scarf tied around one’s head. Take Maya Angelou for example; the colorful prints in her wardrobe echo her uplifting belle lettres; and it only makes sense that Allen Ginsberg’s prophetic calls for revolution were matched by a cool counterculture look.

The influence of stylish literary heroes and heroines has been showing up in the fashion world too. Early this year we saw Céline feature 80-year-old Joan Didion, whose quiet power resonates to this day; a certain bookish charm has been known to show up on the runway at Prada, and it’s not uncommon for eyewear specialists like Warby Parker to sell eyeglasses to fashion fans with 20/20 vision.

As April, which is National Poetry Month, comes to a close, we celebrate nine poets who remind us that nothing is quite as chic as a vibrant, intelligent inner life.

Farewell Pearl River! 8 Stylish Bargains to Snag Before the Chinese Shopping Emporium Closes

Pearl River

It is December 24, and it is snowing. Too late for Internet shopping, too sad to look for gifts at Duane Reade! You’re broke, but you are a person of taste, and refinement, and people expect a great present from you! What do you do?

For 23 years, New Yorkers have found the answer to this dilemma at Pearl River Mart in SoHo, three floors crammed with velvet slippers, brocade change purses, miso soup spoons, painted chests, parasols, paper fans, and things you never knew you—or your friends—wanted: a set of penguin tea cups? A cartoon dog lamp?

Or maybe it isn’t Christmas, it is spring-cleaning time, and you are in desperate need of something to hide the junk that has accumulated in your studio apartment. (Well, that is my idea of spring cleaning . . . ) Pearl River has a room divider, and it’s six feet tall and gorgeous and printed with graceful bamboo stalks. And just because you love them, and they put you in the mood for the Met’s upcoming exhibition, “China: Through the Looking Glass,” why not blow $ 16.50 on a pair of satin slip-ons decorated with dragons?

Now this wonderful emporium, a beloved New York City landmark, is closing, another victim of skyrocketing neighborhood rents. Believe it or not, their current rent of more than $ 100,000 a month is purportedly being raised to more than half a million dollars. (Who could imagine that lacquer chopsticks and bamboo bird cages would add up to $ 100,000 a month?)

The Pearl River website is still alive and kicking, and store owners say they are searching for another location. Which is a very good thing—you never know when you will just have to have a take-out-container-shaped purse, or a scarlet lantern, or maybe—splurge!—a $ 295 handmade gong with a mallet. Bang it slowly: RIP, Pearl River in SoHo.

Evocative Photo Project Counters Stereotypes Of What It Means To Be Black, Masculine And Stylish

For black men, the world of fashion has often been one wrought with stereotypes, misconceptions and images of three-sizes-too-large T-shirts, baggy jeans and flashy chains.

But the ongoing photo series “The Dandy Lion Project” aims to change all that by speaking to the fact that black male fashion, and, by association, black masculinity, is diverse and not solely defined by the sort of images of black men who dominate mainstream media.

The project is organized by Shantrelle Lewis, a Philadelphia- and Brooklyn-based curator. Initially launched for a pop-up art space in Harlem in 2010, “Dandy Lion” has since been featured in shows throughout the world. Its latest exhibition, at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, opened Monday.

(Story continues below)
dandy 3

Daniele Tamagni, “Sapeurs posing in front of Memorial Savorgnan de Brazz, Brazzaville.” 2008. Digital print, 25.9 x 35.8 in.

dandy 4

Kia Chenelle, “The Waiting Man I.” 2013. Archival print, 8 x 10 in.

The show, titled “Dandy Lion: (Re)Articulating Black Masculine Identity,” explores the idea of the “black dandy,” who Lewis described as “a man of African descent who has assimilated and acculturated European fashion in terms of Edwardian-style fashion and tailoring and has African aesthetics.” The show features photos of young urban men dressed in the “dandy” style from all over the world, taken by photographers ranging from the renowned to the unknown.

But what exactly makes up the “dandy” style? The look is a carefully tailored one that often includes a suit, or a vintage sweater or varsity jacket and mixes that early-to-mid 20th-century style with an African aesthetic that is often bursting with bold colors, rich fabrics and flamboyant patterns. It is not simply, as the exhibition announcement noted, “an imitation of European high-brow society.”

Though the “dandy” concept dates back hundreds of years — most carefully documented by Slaves to Fashion author Monica Miller — the “remixed” style is especially befitting of today’s “hip-hop generation,” Lewis explained.

“It definitely goes against the norm in the industry,” Lewis told The Huffington Post. “It’s a way in which they meticulously take and borrow from different cultures that speaks to the diaspora experience in general. It’s also part of the hip-hop aesthetic, borrowing and sampling — that’s what these guys are doing when they get dressed.”

Museum of Contemporary Photography executive director Natasha Egan also found the subject timely — which is part of the reason why they brought the show to Chicago.

“It’s a subject that people talk about in the contemporary art world, this sort of representation of urban black men, but you haven’t seen a show like this,” Egan said. “It’s a great marriage between photography and fashion, which also is often about politics and gender.”

While paying so much attention to one’s appearance might strike some as feminine, Lewis pointed out that the project is intended to push back against that stereotype too. The photo subjects are a mix of straight men as well as gay men, according to Lewis.

“I wanted to combat these limited and narrow ideas of masculinity,” Lewis said. “It’s refreshing to see men who can embrace femininity regardless of sexuality. I have consciously picked images that show and respect that delicate balance between masculinity and femininity — one doesn’t overpower the other and they operate in harmony.”

And at a time where media images of black men continue to reinforce stereotypes rather than offering a broader view of African-American experiences, exhibitions like Lewis’s serve a powerful purpose.

“There’s something to be said about how images continue to perpetuate aggression and fear of black men in our society, images that are closely related to the commercialized image of the thug and the rapper, what we hear on the radio and what we see in films and on TV,” Lewis said. “It’s a manufactured image. I think of those images as being controlled and I think it’s time we collectively as a society across races and demographics begin to really dismantle them.”

Below, view more photos from Lewis’ “Dandy Lion” show, which is on display at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago through July 12.

Kanye West Is GQ’s “Most Stylish Man” Of 2014 [Photos]

Kanye West has won  an online style showdown to become GQ’s “Most Stylish Man” of 2014. Yeezy earned his new title by way of fans votes.

Reports GQ:

There you have it folks. The disciples have spoken, and Kanye West is the people’s champion of swag in the year of our lord Yeezus two thousand and fourteen.

Since he burst onto the scene in pink polo shirts and Louis Vuitton backpacks over a decade ago, West has shifted the landscape of men’s fashion with his forward-thinking style. 2014 was no different.

From bomber jackets to Chelsea boots to over-sized coats, Kanye helped define what this year meant to men in terms of the things they wear, and we think his place as champion in this tournament was earned.

Thanks to all who voted, and remember…it’s never too early to start campaigning for your favorite celeb for the 2015 bracket.

Fashion is everything to the newlywed, so this honor is likely very meaningful.

'That Nail Polish Looks Terrible:' Words Of Advice From My Jewish & Stylish Grandmother

My relationship with fashion started really early on. The first lunch outing I ever went on was spent in a baby carrier atop the table of the cafe inside Saks Fifth Avenue. When it came to reading, the first word I recognized well enough to speak out loud was “Macy’s.”

The reason for this early intimacy with shopping? My super fashionable grandmother, or Nana as she requested to be called upon my birth (“grandmothers are OLD,” she argued.) At 82-years-old (and still working full time!), my Nana continues to be the most stylish person I know… and I work in fashion.

Now, before we begin, let me be clear about something. I LOVE my Nana. She is caring, thoughtful and a fiercely strong woman who has served as a role model my entire life. Having said that, there are still a few things we disagree on. Things like whether writing is a “real job” or my extreme “interest in the Internet.” What we do have in common, is our passion for good style. Shopping and sharing* clothing has been the glue that turned two people who can’t see eye-to-eye on a whole lot into, well, best friends.

But, like any best friends, sometimes we disagree on what looks good and what doesn’t, too. In honor of Mother’s Day this weekend, I’ve decided to share a few of the most memorable fashion moments we’ve sparred over through the years.

You must always have a manicure… and color matters.

Once I showed up to Nana’s apartment in what I thought was a great outfit, cute accessories and mint green nail polish. She opened the door, gave me a once over and said, “what kind of color is that on your nails? I hate it.”

Your shoes should match your bag

This one I can actually get on board with. The first time Nana pointed out that I was wearing a blue bag and brown shoes, I laughed in her face. Now I can’t leave my house without double checking that they go together.

Messy hair is not as cute as you think it is.

Sometimes I don’t feel like showering. By sometimes I mean pretty much any Saturday morning. Conveniently, Saturdays are usually the days Nana and I get together. The last time I rolled out of bed, threw a trusty hat over a messy braid and showed up at her house, she said: “Is that in now? Not brushing you hair?”

Never wear heels — if you’re under 25.

Until I was about 24 (I’m 25 now), Nana yelled at me every time she saw me in a pair of heels. I’m not sure if she’s just given up hope on me, but she hasn’t said a thing since my birthday.

Earrings are a must.

It used to make her CRAZY that I never wore earrings. I don’t know why I didn’t wear them, after all, I DID have holes in my ears. I just didn’t feel like wearing them. She got so fed up that after 22 years she gave me HER nicest pair just so I would wear them. Now that’s dedication.

…Just nowhere besides your ears.

More specifically, no where except your earlobes. I used to have a nose ring that I’m pretty sure crushed her soul a little more every time she looked at it. Now I’ve ditched the nose ring but have a tragus piercing, and I can see her biting her tongue every time I tuck my hair behind my ears. Hey, at least I’m wearing earrings, right?

It’s not just hair, and it doesn’t just grow back.

I recently chopped all my hair off. Nana hasn’t seen it yet, and the next time I’m seeing her is Mother’s Day. The last time I cut all my hair off she had a panic attack right there in the salon. Happy holidays, Nana!

Of course, she’s also imparted a whole bunch of wisdom on me over the years, like:

Cherish your brows.

Back in the day when Nana lived in Israel, she had her eyebrows threaded and they never grew back. So I don’t do much else besides tweeze anymore.

Put a belt on it.

This one is pretty self explanatory. When in doubt, add a belt. It turns an outfit into a look.

Anything can look expensive… if you wear it the right way.

Nana wears something she bought for $ 10 and gets more compliments than I ever do on the things I wear. It’s about the confidence, she says.

Being a total badass probably helps, too.

*By sharing I mean I wear all of her clothes that she “doesn’t want anymore.” Seriously.
