NLP for Swinger Lifestyle Success

The use of Neuro-linguistic-programming (NLP) techniques to help people enhance their swinger lifestyle experience, may sound a little strange but successful swinging and swinger dating is more about having effective people skills than it is about physical attractiveness. Psychologists agree that powerful communication techniques such as are provided by NLP greatly improve our skills with people. Swingers using these techniques, either consciously or subconsciously, are the ones who succeed in establishing lifestyle relationships with other swingers.

The “Reason” for Trump’s Success

A month ago the media was saying Trump was ahead in polls because he is an outsider. All the evidence pointed that way. For example, more than half of Republicans say they support an outsider in Trump, Carson, and Fiorina. And Bernie Sanders seems sort of outsiderish too.

The big problem with that analysis is that if we try to imagine no Donald Trump in the race, it is also hard to imagine that one of the other outsiders would have taken out Jeb Bush so easily. (Low-energy indeed.) So I see Carson and Fiorina as along for the ride, basking in Trump’s “outsider” halo because no one is quite sure what ELSE could be behind Trump’s success in the polls. The media is telling us that we must like outsiders this year, so we start using that explanation ourselves. It becomes self-fulfilling in surveys because no one really has a better explanation of why they want Trump as president.

But if we are being even a little bit aware of our own actions, no one hires the applicant with the least experience because of having less experience. That isn’t a thing. But the media tells us we are doing just that. As a member of the public, I acknowledge we are dumb sometimes. But we are not so dumb that we think hiring the inexperienced candidate sounds like a good idea unless there are extenuating circumstances. And those circumstances are Trump, specifically.

Or maybe the media is right and we like Trump, Carson, and Fiorina because they are the least experienced. Does that even sound right?

Ask yourself how that explanation will sound when historians write about it. That would look something like this: “In 2015 voters decided that they wanted to trust the most important job in the world to someone with no relevant experience in government.”

I don’t even know how to write that idea without making it look foolish.

As the “outsider” explanation fades under the weight of its own absurdity, I am starting to see the pundit explanations for Trump’s rise morph into some notion of “authenticity” as explained in this article.

Authenticity goes further than simple honesty. Honesty means saying what you think is true. But authenticity means saying what you think is true and STAYING IN CHARACTER. Trump certainly does that. He is always full-Trump, and never anything else.

So… is that why people want him to lead the country? Is it because he is so authentic?

No. Trump’s authenticity helps his likability, I assume. But going back to the job applicant analogy, no one ever hired an employee because he seemed so darned authentic. That’s not a thing. The media is telling you it is a thing. While it is true that people LIKE Trump’s authentic-looking style, no one trusts the nuclear launch code to the guy that has authenticity and not much else.

In August I predicted that Trump’s New York swagger would start to grow on people. Once you get past your first reaction (That arrogant braggart!) you settle in and enjoy the show. Trump is making the world get used to him, and it seems to be working. The stuff you hate about him is mostly a side show, and you come to realize it. The things you might like about Trump (business experience, negotiating skills) don’t change as time goes by. So according to the Master Wizard Hypothesis, simply hanging around should be good for Trump, as people get acclimated to his abrasive style, get past all the distraction, and remember he didn’t get where he is by luck (entirely), or by being an “outsider,” or by being authentic.

The Master Wizard Hypothesis I have been using to describe Trump says he is succeeding because his skills at persuasion are unmatched by anyone in the race. (He did write a best selling book on negotiating.) Under this hypothesis, his fourth-grade level of speaking is part of that persuasion. As a general rule, simpler speech is more persuasive. Trump stays simple. Intentionally.

My fiction book God’s Debris features a character who supposedly knows everything about reality and the universe. Since I do not know those things myself, and I had to write dialog for a character that does, I used a writer’s trick: I made the smart character use the simplest explanations because our brains imagine the simplest explanations to be the most credible. That is a standard method of persuasion.

That’s what Trump is doing. He uses simplicity as a tool of persuasion. The only other explanation is that he built a multi-billion-dollar diversified business empire while having the IQ of a ten-year old. Well, maybe.

The reason I am tracking the media’s evolution in how they explain Trump’s success is that this helps confirm the Master Wizard Hypothesis that Trump’s real secret is invisible from those who are not trained in the same style of persuasion as Trump. I remind you I am a trained hypnotist and a professional persuader of sorts. So to me, the hood is propped open and I see the engine running: Trump succeeds because he uses the most powerful tools of persuasion, intentionally.

I like to make predictions so you can hold me to them. I will double-down on my prediction that Trump will win it all (by a large margin in the general election) and that the media’s explanation for how it all happened will morph from one absurdity to another, because most writers and pundits are not trained to see under the hood.

The explanation for Trump’s success has semi-evolved from “outsider” to “authentic” already. More explanations will follow, assuming Trump continues to poll well. Watch for any new explanations of Trump’s success to be as ridiculous as the ones you have already heard. That’s your tell.

Success is a Relative Thing

There is no such thing as absolute success. Success only has meaning in relation to other things. For example, my book, God’s Debris, is ranked #8 on a recent Amazon.com best seller list in the Religious Studies – Psychology category. That doesn’t seem like much of a success until you notice who placed 9th. It’s all relative.

Suck it, number nine!

(And by that I mean not literally a “sucking” force but more of an illusion caused by your dead lips bending space-time.)

I’m a terrible winner.

Dignity and Other Obstacles to Success

In my recent post on physician-assisted death, in which I ran the debate through the so-called Rationality Engine, some of you were disappointed that my verdict was not a verdict. My summary was that a person who values human dignity above freedom could rationally be opposed to physician-assisted death, and vice-versa.

A person of faith, for example, might value human dignity higher than freedom because God graced us with the former but mere human laws define our freedoms. One might say a big point of religion is to constrain human freedoms (especially the bad impulses) to preserve human dignity and in that way show respect for one’s creator. I found this reasoning to be sound if you start with the assumption of a creator with a personality that we can understand, and who has needs/requirements that we can fulfill for our own eternal good.

But one need not be religious to find value in human dignity. An economist could easily argue that the world operates better if we assign value to human life. That probably helps to keep us from slipping into cannibalism.

On the other hand, if you value freedom higher than human dignity, you probably think it makes sense to skip some agony toward the end of life and manage your own graceful exit. According to this way of thinking, human dignity is enhanced by the freedom to engineer your own exit.

Personally, I think human dignity is one of the biggest obstacles to happiness, wealth, and success. I often credit my career success with a complete lack of human dignity.

For example, if you take the Dale Carnegie course, as I did, part of the training involves acting silly in front of a crowd in order to release your dignity. Once you realize that your fear of losing face is the only thing making you nervous, you relax and things flow easily. Releasing my dignity has allowed me to make a fortune on the speaking circuit. I have humiliated myself in front of crowds a number of times. That’s how one improves. And my willingness to take that sort of risk is a big part of what puts me in a rare zone, fee-wise.

I often credit the success of Dilbert with my total lack of artistic integrity. I launched the strip as a generic comic about a guy that happened to be an engineer, but for the first year or two I focused on his home life. I was surprised to learn that readers preferred my infrequent workplace jokes to my generic humor, so I turned Dilbert into a workplace comic. Success followed. I treated my art like any other product and gave customers the features they demanded.

To put it bluntly, I traded my artistic pride for a better business model. Readers were glad I did. And that made me happy too. I keep looking for the downside of giving up my artistic ego but I can’t find it. And more generally, every time I give up some dignity (”sell out”) I seem to come out ahead. I see that pattern in other people’s lives as well.

After a lifetime of observation, it seems to me that dignity in all its forms can be one of the most pervasive obstacles to success. I assume that is because human dignity is hard to separate from ego, pride, artistic integrity, fear of failure, and a lot of other obstacles that successful people try to avoid. All of those limiting emotions spring from the idea that you are special.

In the case of physician-assisted dying, for example, a high sense of human dignity could sentence millions of sufferers to a living Hell.

For practical reasons, I believe we should treat each other well, even when no one is watching. Human dignity adds nothing to that world view. Moreover, I have seen ego, dignity, and pride ruin lots of lives. I would go so far as to say that unless you have health issues, or you are unfairly imprisoned, the only thing that can keep you from happiness is an inflated view of your own self-worth.

Sometimes life requires that we take jobs below our station until we learn skills, offer apologies even when we are wronged, suck-up to power when necessary, work long hours when we “deserve” some rest, risk embarrassment in front of witnesses, risk failure and humiliation, and get rejected by the people we hope to love. In that sort of game, the player unburdened with human dignity usually wins.

Human dignity is, to a large degree, what made both of my parents suffer needlessly at the ends of their lives. I’m quite done with that form of magical thinking. And if California lawmakers decide I will not have a legal right to physician-assisted death, should I someday want it, I still have the right to own a gun, and that means I get to choose my exit.

If I find myself in unbearable pain toward the end of my days, and knowing my personality, there is a non-zero chance I will Uber to Sacramento and spray my brains all over the steps of the state capital just to make a point. It won’t be a dignified way to go, but still far better than dying like a sheep because other people believe they are special.

And how about a hobby drone that is gas-powered for extra awesomeness? Can it go get gas on its own?

Success Without Testosterone

Confession: I am a serial interrupter.

If I don’t like what you are saying, I might start start talking over you while hoping my rudeness makes you stop. If I am in a hurry, and you are taking too long to form a thought, I will cut you off just to get on with my life. If you are saying something vague to a third-party, I might cut you off to add my clarification. And if you are saying something illogical, off topic, or in any way unpleasant, I might start talking over you just because I prefer the sound of my own voice.

If you call me on my cell phone, I might let it roll over to voice mail because cell phone delays don’t let me interrupt as much as I’d like. No way I am going to listen to complete sentences just because I have a phone in my hand. I will look for your text later. (True story. I avoid the phone largely because it has no interrupt feature.)

Now add my rude interruptions to my firm belief that whatever I say is more useful than whatever other people are saying and you can see why people might not want to attend a meeting with me. I’m that guy.

But here is the interesting part: I am not always that guy. A lot has to do with my testosterone levels at the moment. If I’m jacked up on testosterone, don’t expect me to even hear what other people say. It is all about me at that moment. But if my testosterone is low, feel free to kick me. I will just run away and feel bad.

Can a man actually tell when his testosterone is high? I think so, but perhaps one of you can add some clarity in the comments.

About a decade ago I went to my doctor to ask about testosterone supplements. I was over forty and I was showing all the signs of decreased testosterone. I no longer had the vigor, the confidence, or the muscle-building capabilities of youth and I wanted it back. My doctor talked me out of getting testosterone supplements because my condition was not unhealthy and the shots could have some nasty side-effects.

So instead I embarked on a more natural path to regain my testosterone levels, or at least keep them as high as my age allows. I fixed my diet and my exercise systems and dropped more than twenty pounds over a decade, slowly, and without any real effort. As I accumulated knowledge about fitness and diet, I no longer needed much willpower. I just made smarter choices.

As my fitness continued to improve, I could feel my sense of well-being, confidence, and personal power increasing to levels I had not seen since my youth. Eventually I started adding muscle like a twenty-something. (I don’t take any illegal meds or sports supplements beyond protein powder for my shakes.)

The end result is that at age 58 (almost) I have the body of a young man with raging testosterone. And as science would predict, my life has evolved to match that testosterone level. I take on more projects than I should because my ambition is sky-high and my confidence is at a peak. And when I fail, as I often do, I shrug it off and skip-off to my next challenge. Testosterone is an awesome drug.

[Here I invite you to doubt whether a man can “feel” his testosterone levels. My experience is that my testosterone levels are as obvious to me during the day as my hunger or my tiredness. Is it imagined?]

At this point in my story you might be wondering why I would intentionally jack up my testosterone levels when I know it makes me even more of an aggressive, egotistical monster than normal. The answer is that I do it strategically. All indications from studies are that over-confidence is correlated with success. So my target range for my body’s chemical composition is whatever creates that feeling of overconfidence. Most of you have never experienced the feeling of overconfidence. I have to tell you it feels great. But it only takes one day of bad lifestyle choices to pound down your testosterone levels and turn you into the mouse in the room.

Back to my main point: In my testosterone-soaked condition, I will interrupt you before you even open your mouth. And I will not feel bad about it. So my question is this: How do women succeed in a business setting surrounded by testosterone-beasts who are interrupters?

In the interest of full-disclosure, I did not believe the “men interrupt women in meetings” claim until recently. I had never noticed the phenomenon, but the science suggests I would be blind to it even if I were the perpetrator. (And I am.) Recently I have had several conversations with executive-level women on this topic and I let them finish enough of their sentences to convince me that this is real. And I think it is a bigger deal than men realize. As I say, we are usually blind to it even while doing it.

Personally, I interrupt anyone who lets me. I have never been aware of interrupting women more often than men. But my hypothesis is that I interrupt people based on my perceived risk. And I would see my risk of interrupting someone with high testosterone, such as a puffed-up male CEO, as high. I would see my risk of interrupting a female CEO as low. None of this is based on reason. It is based on instinct, bias, evolution, and whatnot.

And this ties into another interesting concept I heard the other day from a highly-successful businesswoman: The importance of physical size. The notion here is that evolution makes us fear large people even when we are in a safe environment such as a business context. And men are usually larger. It is easy to imagine (without the benefit of data) that interrupters go easier on large people just because they are intimidating.

The social rules of business evolved around male patterns and preferences. In the short run, we are stuck with that.  If you put a smallish creature with low testosterone in a room with a huge creature with high testosterone, you don’t have a setting that is likely to produce the best ideas. You have a situation in which only one opinion is likely to be heard. That can’t be a good thing.

This is a thorny problem because men are not likely to lower their testosterone, women are unlikely to take testosterone supplements for obvious reasons, and men are generally physically larger than women. It seems impossible to fix the interrupting problem, right?

Maybe not.

An article in TIME has some suggestions for both men and women on how to handle the women-get-interrupted-more issue. I was surprised to see how practical those ideas are. And I started using the trick of cutting off a man when he cuts off a woman, and directing the conversation back. That one plays to my strength because I get to cut people off.

Questions to ponder:

1. Can a man feel his testosterone level?

2. Have you noticed smaller people getting interrupted more?

3. Do you think testosterone levels influence interruptions?

I do some angel investing, so I see technology that is coming online about two years before the rest of you. The biggest trend I see is miniaturization of medical diagnostic equipment. We are approaching a day when healthcare costs will reverse and begin a permanent decline. (That is my prediction.) See some of the amazing stuff coming. I would call this the most important trend in the world that is not robotics.

Exclusive: Yo Gotti Talks New Album & Keys To Success For Indie Artists

Yo Gotti’s new album, The Art Of Hustle, is on the way! Yo Gotti states that he is in the process of picking the final tracks, and in the album’s artwork, he plans to lay out what the 10 laws of The Art Of Hustle are. Yo Gotti’s (now a veteran in the game) albums, strategic touring, and solid mixtape output have allowed the Memphis emcee to emerge as the people’s champ.

AllHipHop caught up with Yo Gotti to discuss his upcoming album and the keys to success as an independent artist. Check out the interview below.

“The key to success being an independent artist is always be willing to do the work yourself. Never wait on no one. Never wait on a record label, never wait on a budget, never on the go ahead. If you feel it and know what you are doing, take that responsibility and roll with it.”

“When you are first getting in the game just know what you are getting in it for. What’s your goals? What winning is to you.”

“The fact that I’m not taking penitentiary federal chances; I’m doing something I love to do naturally is success.”

Do Open Networks Boost Your Odds of Success?

Every time I hear of a study suggesting that doing (whatever) is important for success, I ask myself if the authors interpreted the correlations correctly.

And I rarely think they did.

Take for example this recent article describing how people with “open networks” are far more successful than those with “closed networks.” In this context, it means that the more new ideas you are exposed to, the more likely you are a success.

That interpretation makes perfect sense to me. Seeing lots of new ideas is probably a good thing in most situations.

But another interpretation is that the folks with the personalities and resources to succeed are more likely to also have open networks. It doesn’t necessarily mean one causes the other.

The good people manufacturing mature products, such as concrete, probably don’t see many new ideas. And I would guess they don’t attract the world’s most ambitious and talented employees to their industry because the upside potential feels limited.

My ambitious personality ruled out any field with no upside potential. So I cartoon, write, and work on my Internet start-up. Each of those career choices benefit from open networks and a high flow of new ideas. I choose my projects for their upside potential; the open networks just come with the deal.

To be fair, the article says open networks “predict” success as opposed to causing it. (“Predict” sounds like language used by the people doing the studies and it does not assume causation.) But the article hints at causation because it treats the correlation as important.

My observation is that smart people tend to gravitate toward jobs that have a lot of new ideas swirling around. When smart people succeed at higher rates than others, do we need to drill too deeply to understand why?
