Tory Lanez Clears Up 2Pac & Tekashi 6ix9ine Quip, Tells Fans “Get Off My D*ck”

Tory Lanez isn’t the first and certainly won’t be the last recording artist to have his words misunderstood, especially when it comes to someone as revered as the late Tupac “2Pac” Shakur. During a recent interview, the Canadian crooner and spitter seemingly compared Tekashi 6ix9ine to ‘Pac and he obviously caught flack for it.

While sitting down with Tim Westwood earlier this week, Lanez spoke on Tekashi’s legal predicament and how it went down during the very height of his career similarly to 2Pac.

“The only n*gga who had sh*t like that popping was Tupac. When Tupac was in jail he dropped the biggest album. Not to say it was the biggest album of all fu*king time, but it was a pretty big moment. It’s sad he’s gotta be locked up during it, is all I’m saying,” Lanez said, while mentioning Tekashi’s features such as Nicki Minaj and Kanye West.

Fans have been giving Lanez grief over the comment, but he fired back with a not so friendly missive himself.

“I did not compare 6ix9ine to 2 pac … I just said they both dropped big albums from jail at the level of fame that they had . Get off my dick,” Lanez tweeted on Tuesday (Dec. 4).

Welp, that settles that.

Kendrick Lamar Tells Fans How Fame Changed People During 6-Minute Speech [VIDEO]

If these walls could talk, they would say Kendrick Lamar is the sh*t and he’s putting it down for the purest form of Hip-Hop music.

During his latest pit stop in New York City for the Kunta’s Groove Sessions Tour, K. Dot decided to take a break from his virtuoso style of emceeing and give fans the skinny how

“Within six months of good kid, m.A.A.d city dropping, the life of what I knew or knew what I was or think I knew, that shit changed within six months,” the Grammy Award-winning rap star told the packed house of Webster Hall. “And you’re going through the vultures of the world telling you you’re great and you’re trying to make yourself believe that, but it’s hard because you’re institutionalized from where you come from.”

Released in October of 2012, Kendrick’s studio debut album went on to become a certified classic and the entry point he needed to be mentioned amongst music’s elite. His follow-up To Pimp a Butterfly has been subjected to extreme critiques on both sides of the spectrum, but the conversation has managed to keep the album alive when traditional means of promotion have since faded.

“I think this sh*t could live forever,” he continued. “I’m looking at y’alls faces. I got some of the most loyal, dedicated fans in the world and New York is one of them. Don’t mind me I could talk all day. To Pimp A Butterfly. God allowed this motherf*cking album to soar all the way to the top, with no motherf*cking commercial success. God allowed this to be top-tier without a radio single and sh*t.”

“I got some of the most loyal, dedicated fans in the world,” K. Dot said, thanking the audience for their support.

Tells for Cognitive Dissonance (with some Trump flavoring)

When a skilled persuader exerts influence on a large group, people will generally react in one of three ways.

20% Will be heavily influenced right away, and be happy about it.

60% Will be mildly influenced, over time, with repetition.

20% Will be unusually angry, comparing the persuader to evil dictators and the like.

Under the Master Wizard Hypothesis, the folks who are the angriest are having a reaction to the persuasion that violates their self-image, throwing them into cognitive dissonance. The 20% who are easily influenced without anger had no skin in the game, in the sense that they had not yet picked sides.

The tells for Cognitive Dissonance are many. Here are some I haven’t before mentioned.

Tell 1: Wow

When a pundit or stranger on the Internet starts a comment with “Wow,” as if shocked by an opinion, that is a tell for cognitive dissonance. That is anger disconnected from reason. People who have reasons for disagreeing offer them right away, because doing so is the strongest counter-argument. “Wow” usually indicates you are feeling persuasion that violates your self-image as a person with smart opinions.

The “wow” tell is a specific example of…

Tell 2: No specific criticism

When you see objections without reasons, as in “That is the dumbest idea of all time” it is a tell for cognitive dissonance. To be fair, some things are legitimately dumb. So this tell is less conclusive than “wow,” as far as I can tell.

Tell 3: So you’re saying…

When someone restates your persuasive and reasonable point as an absurd point in order to refute it, that’s a tell for cognitive dissonance. Look for a wrongly-restated argument that looks so wrong you think it must be intentional. But it is not always intentional. Often it is cognitive dissonance.

Tell 4: Analogy Arguments

Analogies are useful for explaining new ideas the first time. But in the realm of debate, they can only make things worse because analogies are messy and subject to interpretation. Rarely does one rely on an analogy as the main argument when reason and data would do the trick.

The classic example is a Hitler analogy (Godwin’s Law). But any absurd analogy is an equally good tell.

Tell 5: Peering Into the Soul of a Stranger

When you hear someone say they can look into a persuader’s soul and see the evil intent – without the benefit of any actual evidence in the real world – that is almost always cognitive dissonance. That usually takes the form of accusations about sexism, racism, narcissism, and greed. Those are all inner thoughts.

You might be saying to yourself that what I call cognitive dissonance is plain old stupidity. I suppose it falls under the wide umbrella of stupidity, but it is a special flavor. Regular stupidity stays with you all the time. But the cognitive dissonance type is only activated when your self-image is violated by a persuasive argument.

With that in mind, consider the reactions to Donald Trump’s plans to secure the borders of the country, which is obviously the job of a president. You can dislike Trump’s stated plan (as I do) but when you see folks compare Trump to famous dictators and evil actors, that is usually a tell for dissonance.

Not convinced?

If you have a friend who opposes a secure border with Mexico, ask that friend for some details of his plan that allows anyone to come in. How’s that plan work? That’s when he might say, “Wow. That’s the sort of question Hitler asked.”

Protecting the United States from foreign threats, both military and economic, is literally the job description of the President. You can hate the wall, and you can hate Trump’s deportation plan (as I do) but it is hard to argue that the president should ignore the office’s primary responsibility of protecting the country from military and economic threats.

I remind you I am not smart enough to know who would be a good president. I think it all depends what kind of surprises the future holds, and I am not psychic.

And about Trump’s deportation plan, if Trump is consistent with decades of Trumpness, that is just an opening offer. He doesn’t expect to deport those folks. But a good negotiator doesn’t START by conceding.

Ask yourself which is more likely: 1) An experience business person believes he can deport 11 million illegal immigrants and everything will work out fine, or 2) The most famous negotiator on the planet, who negotiates everything, all the time, is making an opening offer he expects to negotiate away.

The Tells (for cognitive dissonance)

Today I offer you a new and probably different filter for interpreting your reality. You can try the filter in the same way you would try on a new pair of sunglasses. See for yourself if the new filter fits the data better than your old one. This is for entertainment only. Science is probably at a different URL.

What follows is a description of some of the tells for cognitive dissonance. If any of what follows is accurate, it might set you on a path that changes your life in delightful ways. Or maybe reading this post will do nothing but leave you with less time to interact with other people. Either way, you’re welcome.

This might be a lucky day for you.

Pay attention.

Cognitive dissonance, as I use the term in this post, refers to a situation in which a person is presented with facts that contradict that person’s self-image, causing said person to say things that sound 100% reasonable to the speaker while sounding like nonsense to others.

When I say nonsense, I do not mean a normal difference of opinion based on different values or different information. I mean serious head-scratching WTF stuff.

A tell, in this context, means an involuntary action that reveals a person’s inner thoughts in an unguarded moment. In the context of a poker game, a tell might signal a bluff. In the context of police work, a tell might signify a lie. In the context of hypnosis, a tell signifies a switch from rational thinking to irrational thinking.

A tell in this context can mean you guessed the admin password for a human being. The tell is your feedback that the words you used got translated into a physical response. That is the hypnotist’s equivalent of A-B testing. The hypnotist tries an approach and watches for the subject’s physical reaction.

Recognizing tells takes practice. The more tells you spot in your lifetime, the easier it is to find more. Your mind gets tuned to them. You recognize the pattern. You see them coming before they even happen, based on the trigger event.

Complicating all of this is the fact that each tell has a false-positive explanation that will always sound plausible. The best way to estimate the odds of a tell being the real thing is by its proximity to a known trigger. If someone exhibits a tell symptom without a trigger, it probably just means you are talking to an idiot. And that happens less than you probably assume it does. All the rest of your “idiot” encounters are smart people experiencing cognitive dissonance and not realizing it.

And now for the list of tells.

Speechless Moment. This one can only be detected when you are in the same room. When a person that is otherwise witty and verbal becomes temporarily tongue-tied, it means they are having a strong physical response to your suggestion. Use this method in your love life to identify a person’s sexual preferences in casual conversation.

Example:

Love Interest: “Sorry I am late.”

You: “You need a good spanking.” (Said with a knowing grin, for effect.)

Love Interest: [silence that last over 5 seconds]

Interpretation: A sudden “struck dumb” silence means you reached into your love interest’s subconscious and found a powerful hidden craving.

False-positive: That’s a messed-up thing to say to a nice girl you barely know. She is wondering how to end the date early.

Lone Penguin: The Lone Penguin is the person you see on the Internet imploring others to stop listening to person X. The usual phrasing looks like “Why is anyone listening to that terrible person X?”

The tell is that the Lone Penguin will offer no data or reasoning to back up the emotion. At most, the Lone Penguin will offer a link to a story in which a journalist got something wrong or out of context.

Example:

Economist: Here is my data showing that capitalism is the best system for everyone, even the poor. (This is just an example.)

Aged Hippy: “Why are we listening to this fascist? He said in an interview ten years ago that his favorite color is blue.”

Interpretation: The Lone Penguin hates person X because the argument made by person X is persuasive, and that violates the Lone Penguin’s identity as a person who always disagrees with person X and similar lines of thinking.

False-positive: Person X really is a total turd with no redeeming points of view. The Lone Penguin is actually just a person with good judgement.

Personal Attack: A personal attack without reason is among the strongest tells. That means the person being attacked has been so persuasive that it is shaking someone else’s self-image.

Example:

Politician: My policies will stimulate the economy. Here is the data proving that this plan worked in every country where it became law.

Citizen: That guy is a reactionary asshole

Interpretation: The politician’s argument is so strong that it violates the citizen’s identity as someone that is always on the other side of that particular argument. How can the citizen maintain his old self-image and still feel rational? Cognitive dissonance is triggered and anger comes out.

False-positive: The politician really is a reactionary asshole with a bad plan.

Godwin’s Law Comes Early: Named for its creator, Mike Godwin, this observation says that every online conversation will eventually invoke Hitler’s name if you wait long enough. For our purposes, the tell is that Hitler’s name comes up too soon.

Example:

Politician: I favor a tiny change in gun laws that will have no impact on legal gun ownership but might keep some guns out of the hands of criminals.

Citizen: That’s what Hitler said.

Interpretation: If you skip directly to Hitler without passing “why” you are probably experiencing cognitive dissonance.

False Positive: Sometimes a genocidal dictator does invade a neighboring country.

Too Many Explanations: When you see pundits or citizens offering a wide variety of explanations for an observation, it probably means no one has any idea what the real reason is. If people were rational they would say they don’t know the reason. But if cognitive dissonance sets in, people will imagine reasons and convince themselves they are real.

Example:

Pundit 1: He leads in the polls because he is an outsider.

Pundit 2: He leads in the polls because he says what people are thinking.

Pundit 3: He leads in the polls because the press likes a clown. He will fail later.

Pundit 4: He leads in the polls because people like his immigration plan.

Pundit 5: He leads in the polls because serious voters are not paying attention yet.

Pundit 6: He leads in the polls because people think he can win and people like to win.

Interpretation: When everyone has their own explanation, nearly all of them are in cognitive dissonance.

False-positive: Sometimes things do have more than one explanation.

Slippery Slope: Any reference to a slippery slope is a tell for cognitive dissonance because there is no logical argument that involves a slippery slope unless kids are involved. When reason fails, you go for a Hitler analogy or a slippery slope defense. They are roughly equal in absurdity.

Example:

Politician: I favor doctor-assisted suicide.

Citizen: That is a slippery slope to a cannibal society.

Interpretaton: I agree with your reasoning but it scares me because it makes me imagine something similar happening in a bad way.

False-negative: You have encountered a rare situation in which the slippery slope is a real thing. For example, allowing your kid to eat candy before dinner just one time is definitely a slippery slope.

Jokeless laugh: When I was training to be a hypnotist, our instructor taught us that a subject will often laugh at something you say, or a background sound, that would normally have no humor trigger. The real trigger is that the subject is feeling the hypnotist’s words translate into bodily reactions and it causes an involuntary giggle.

Case in point, I often find myself doubled up in laughter when I read quotes from Donald Trump. I feel the persuasion working at the same time I recognize his tricks for pulling it off. That feeling of absurdity (my mind is being changed without the benefit of reason) triggers a laugh response when there is no joke in the vicinity.

Example:

Hypnotist: Your arm feels weightless. It will start to float.

Subject: Hee hee! That lawnmower outside made a funny noise.

Interpretation: The subject felt her arm getting lighter, which makes no sense in her old view of how things work, and it triggered a laugh response.

False-positive: The lawn mower is actually funny for some reason.

Nonsense Rebuttal: When you hear an irrational response to your rational argument, it probably means the argument was sound but it violated someone’s sense of identity. Here I am talking about the truly illogical responses you see on the Internet all the time, not routine disagreements over data and priorities.

Example:

Other Guy: Locking up criminals forever does not reduce crime.

Me: That could only be true if for some reason law-abiding people decide to become criminals at a higher rate because the real ones are in jail.

Other Guy: It is a slippery slope.

Me: WTF?

I am sure I am leaving out lots of tells. And you will be quick to point out that the tells conveniently form a narrative that lets me be right all the time while viewing everyone else as being in a state of cognitive dissonance.

You have a good point there.

Why do I think I can spot tells more often than chance would predict? The best answer I can offer is that I think I can. My experiences are anecdotal, not measured. You are invited to be skeptical about this and all the rest of my blogging on the topic of hypnosis.

In a past post I teased you that there are some topics that can’t be communicated because of their nature. This is one of them. The rational people reading this blog should be skeptical that, for example, Trump can dominate the country using little more than good business sense and linguistic engineering. To me, that seems like an easy accomplishment for Trump, given his skill level.

Trump’s “inexplicable” success so far opens the door just enough for me to discuss this topic. If you watch him march to the White House while the pundits disagree why this “magic” is happening, my credibility on this topic will increase to the point where  I can communicate with you and you will listen. There is lots more to tell.

If Trump stumbles, for any reason, the door will close and no one will think his skills at persuasion were a big thing. Most of you expect that to happen. And stumbling seems common enough that we can’t rule it out. Nate Silver, who is right more than most people, gives Trump a 2% chance of success.

But if Trump goes all the way, and the Master Wizard hypothesis fits the data best, everything you know about the world will change. I know how that will feel because a similar thing happened to me in my twenties.

You think the Trump spectacle is about politics, or money, or the usual media circus. And perhaps it is. But if he wins, it could mark a fundamental change in how humans view their place in the world. Once you see yourself as a Moist Robot, subject to programming by Master Wizards and prophets, you can never unsee it.

Let me give you a concrete way to make these tells useful.

If you get into a debate, and you suspect the other person has abandoned reason for cognitive dissonance, what do you do?

Most of you would try harder to be more rational and to provide better data. But the hypnotist sees a different problem. To the hypnotist, the problem is not the argument but the the person’s self-image. So the hypnotist might, for example, use the Big Picture move to adjust a person’s self-image until the argument starts to fit.

Example:

Arguer: Your plan is terrible because [absurd reason].

Hypnotist: You might be right. But if we are smart we will try the plan that teaches us something even if it doesn’t work. Then we will be in better shape to test the next iteration. Let’s view it as a process.

[Here the hypnotist elevates the discussion from the weeds to the Big Picture of how one finds certainty in an uncertain world. The arguer recognizes this as bigger thinking than the argument in the weeds. He does not want to be the weeds guy. He immediately adjusts his self-image from weeds-guy to big thinker. Once his self-image matches your plan, he is free to agree. That typically takes the form of over-agreeing, or amplifying the Big Picture to demonstrate allegiance to it. As in…]

Arguer: Yes, of course we need a system to rapidly test all the plans. Duh. I tried to tell you that yesterday but I got busy. And I guess we can try yours first, since you already have the details worked out.

Summary: If someone disagrees with you based on facts, provide better facts. But if someone disagrees because of cognitive dissonance, change who that person believes they are. The Big Picture move is just one way to do that.

Trump isn’t trying to change your mind on the facts. He knows voters are in cognitive dissonance half the time or more. Trump is changing who we are, until our self-images match his argument.

Don’t believe me? Wait until you see how many people that now oppose Trump’s immigration plan suddenly turn into people who understand we need a wall because good fences make good neighbors.

And you’re a good neighbor, right?

That’s just one way Trump could win you over by keeping his argument the same and modifying your self-image.

If Trump does not win the White House, for any reason, I invite you to discard the Master Wizard hypothesis I have proposed in this blog space. I would do the same in your situation.

But if he wins it all… and no one can agree why…

Before you ask, I am working on a book list that would give you a wider exposure to this way of thinking, from different and more scientific perspectives. I’m waiting for a book that I have seen in draft form that will be a must-read when it has a final title and cover. It includes science and stuff. Give me two weeks.

6 Things No One Tells You About Long-Distance Relationships

The story never gets old: A girl meets a boy. They fall head over heels in love to realize later on one is bound to leave somewhere far.

My story, however, comes with a little twist. I traveled nearly 6,000 miles from home to get lost in thick Indonesian jungles with a person living in my hometown. Yet, moving to France in just a month after we return from the trip.

While I desperately wished to quit my job, pack my bags I couldn’t. Saying immediate good-bye forever at that point would have torn my heart apart as well. So I opted for that type of relationships I never believed could work — long-distance relationship (LDR).

Two years fast-forward, we are still together. We are still in love and I now have two homes in two different countries where I spend equal amount of time.

There’s one important most thing I need to tell you upfront: Long-distance relationships suck. You may eventually discover some positive aspects, but on your “bad days” you will curse each mile separating you.

Yet, if you ask me, “Is it actually worth to get into LDR?

Absolutely. Every. Single. (Pun intended). Minute.

If you found yourself at the point when you need to decide whether love on the distance is possible for you, here are some important things I have learned the hard way.

1. You got a free ticket for an emotional non-stop roller-coaster ride.

2015-08-18-1439906521-4684325-C953D6F0C2.jpg

I have always thought of myself as a big girl who doesn’t cry. The first month of LDR turned me into a total weepie.

It’s not that we weren’t doing “good”. It’s just due to complete novelty of the situation; I have experienced a vast variety of feelings from deep, depressive sadness to anger, joy, anxiety, enthusiasm and everything in between.

If you think it gets better in time, sorry, it doesn’t.

You will still have “good days” when you do your daily chores, feel excited about something, have fun times with friends. And there would be bad days. Terribly wrong days full of self-pity, heart-wrenching loneliness and drilling pain.

When you are together, your joy and happiness can’t be tamed. When you are apart, your sadness grows to the size of your personal universe.

2. You will become really creative in filling up your time.

To avoid the sadness consuming me, I started to get creative with keeping my brains occupied most of the day. I took language classes, learnt to cook a few dozens of new dishes, started biking regularly into the countryside, worked long hours, started a blog, revived some long-forgotten friendships, de-cluttered my flat, gave away my clothes and did some charity projects.

My partner started learning to play the guitar, learned to skate, became a pro-chess player, continued to study another language and make new friends and useful professional connections in his new home country.

Now you get the point, you will have a lot of “waiting” time you will need to productively waste unless you don’t want to be a sad girl all the time.

3. You will have a lot of tough choices to make.

Let’s start with some relatively simple questions both of you will need to answer honestly: “Where is this all heading?” and “What’s next?”; “How do you see our future together?” and “How can we close the distance?”

Add to the above developing the ultimate visiting schedule, shared expenses and financial planning, plus questions from all sort of random folks asking when/why don’t you get married or dump him.

4. Your friends’ may not be as supportive as you think.

If they are not in LDR as well, they won’t get all of your woes and complains 75 percent of the times. They will sound as sympathetic and compassionate as they can, but deep down inside you know they don’t understand your feelings.

Some would be much worse, asking seemingly hilarious questions like: “Does your boyfriend even exist?”, “How do you cope with the physical aspect of being in relationships?” and “Maybe you should date someone else?”.

Right. And than a cat becomes a dog.

5. In time, you develop an odd feeling of sureness.

2015-08-18-1439907055-7802456-FAEVFTT6YM.jpg

Your relationships are definitely not about sex. You are rather friends without benefits when you are not together. If that’s not true love, why would each if you bother to sustain this whole thing?

You are very honest with your partner and can share anything in person or online — fears, dreams, hopes, pain, insecurities. Suddenly, “jealousy” becomes an empty word for you as you grow a thousand per cent sure in your partner.

6. You will make it till the end.

I have never believed long-distance relationships work. I was proved wrong.

You will make it through. You can be a happy couple even if you don’t share one zip code.

If it is your person, you will survive everything together and make it through all the future couple struggles and life difficulties.

Kid Rock Tells Confederate Flag Protesters To “Kiss My Ass”

It is now difficult to remember that Kid Rock once had a relationship with African Americans when h was a rapper.

Now, the Detroit native has taken to vehemently reject those protesting his continued use of the Confederate flag, which was formally taken down in South Carolina this week. Other states and retailers have discontinued use as well.

Earlier in the week, the National Action Network’s Michigan chapter protested outside the Detroit Historical Museum and demand the now-rocker discontinue use of the Confederate flag. Kid Rock offered the following message delivered through Fox News: “Please tell the people who are protesting to kiss my ass/Ask me some questions.”

According to published reports, Rock has moved to Alabama and become friends with conservative radicals like Ted Nugnet and toured with “Southern Pride” acts like Lynyrd Skynyrd, who also loves the Confederate flag.

There is a permanent exhibit at the Historical Museum, The Kid Rock Music Lab, that celebrates Kid Rock’s musical contributions and makes no reference to the flag at all.

”The Kid Rock Music Lab is one of 10 permanent exhibitions at the Detroit Historical Museum,” the museum said to WXYZ. “Kid Rock’s contribution to Detroit’s music history is significant and warrants his inclusion along with other key figures like Stevie Wonder, Bob Seger, Aretha Franklin and Eminem. There are no displays of the Confederate flag in the Kid Rock Music Lab or anywhere else inside the Detroit Historical Museum.”

‘Jimmy Kimmel’ Tells People The 4th Of July May Be Moved, People Buy It

America. Land of the free. Home of the gullible.

People were told other red, white and blue nonsense that they also took at face value. But just because you can be pranked doesn’t mean you’re not a patriot.

It’s like Kimmel said: “Part of being American is not knowing anything.”

John Oliver Tells The South Exactly Where It Can Stick The Confederate Flag

John Oliver said there’s really only one purpose for the Confederate flag.

“The Confederate flag is one of those symbols that really should only be seen on T-shirts, belt buckles and bumper stickers to help the rest of us identify the worst people in the world,” Oliver said Sunday on “Last Week Tonight.”

After 21-year-old white supremacist Dylann Roof allegedly killed nine black churchgoers in Charleston last week, the U.S. and South Carolina flags flew at half staff over the state’s Capitol. But the nearby Confederate flag flew high, which led to a growing call that it should be removed.

Several Republican presidential candidates have said the decision to fly the Confederate flag should be left up to individual states. Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-S.C.) said the flag represents the Civil War to some, but admits “it has been used in a racist way.”

Oliver agreed.

“I believe the first time the Confederate flag was used in a racist way was the exact second they finished sewing the very first one,” he said. “It was around that time.”

Oliver had some suggestions for what to do with the flag flying near the South Carolina Capitol, and every other Confederate flag. Check it out in the clip above.

Malala Yousafzai Tells Jon Stewart ‘Normal Humans Like Us’ Can Bring Change

Jon Stewart had almost no jokes for his audience Thursday night in the wake of Wednesday’s mass shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

Instead, Stewart chose to focus the bulk of his show on the night’s guest, Malala Yousafzai, the 17-year-old Pakistani who won a Nobel Peace Prize for her work advocating for children’s rights and education.

“Our guest tonight is an incredible person who suffered unspeakable violence by extremists and her perseverance and determination through that to continue on is an incredible inspiration,” Stewart said. “And to be quite honest with you, I don’t think there’s anyone else in the world that I would rather talk to tonight.”

She was on the show discussing girls’ education and Davis Guggenheim’s upcoming documentary, “He Named Me Malala,” which is described as an “intimate portrait” of Yousafzai’s extraordinary life.

The teen told Stewart it’s important for regular people to speak up about injustice.

“Sometimes we wait for others, and think that Martin Luther should rise among us, and Nelson Mandela should rise among us and speak up for us,” she said. “But we never realize that there are normal humans like us, and if we step forward, we can also bring change just like them.”

Yousafzai’s life exemplifies that philosophy. She began to gain international attention in 2009, when she wrote a blog for the BBC about living under the influence of the Taliban. She subsequently became an international advocate for girls’ education.

The teen was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in 2012 while riding a bus home from school. A group of men boarded the bus, asked for Yousafzai specifically and shot her in the head. After her recovery, she founded the Malala Fund, a nonprofit dedicated to helping girls worldwide attend school. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014.

Stewart joked that, with the teen looking forward to college applications in the next couple of years, she “might want to work on her resume.”

When Family Tells You to Shut Up About Gay Marriage

I awoke to the following Facebook message from a family member:

2015-05-29-1432923531-2923319-facebook.jpg

“Government has NO RIGHT to direct religious organizations to recognize gay or any other marriage for that matter. Forcing your lifestyle on religious organizations is no better than religious organizations forcing their views on you. And before you start singling out Christians, in Islam homosexuality is punished by death. Yet the media has you all gassed up against Christians. Me personally I couldn’t care less who or even what you marry. Just stop telling me I have to accept it. Mind your business and I’ll mind mine. Why is that so Goddamn hard?”

On the brink of a Supreme Court decision, this sort of sentiment is streaming through the feeds of gays nationwide. Why wouldn’t I just respond to this family member privately? That’s simple: I’m really dramatic. What’s not as simple is the reasoning and logic here. Let’s take it a sentence at a time.

“Government has NO RIGHT to direct religious organizations to recognize gay or any other marriage for that matter.”

Except that it already does. For straight marriages. For interracial marriages. Hopefully soon for gay marriages.

“Forcing your lifestyle on religious organizations is no better than religious organizations forcing their views on you.”

Let’s talk about this phrase “forcing your lifestyle.” I hear it a lot. It often accompanies the words “shoved in my face.” Such violent terminology. What are you afraid of? Get your dollars ready, here comes a mandatory, greasy lap dance from yours truly. You might be planning a quiet evening with your family tonight, but too bad. My boyfriend and I can’t wait to make out in your living room. Can you guys pick up some poppers?

Let me suggest, while Christianity certainly has a long and dark history of forcing its views on others, we gays are just asking for equal and fair treatment. Consider that it might feel like a face-shoving only because it’s somewhat new. You’ll get used to it.

“And before you start singling out Christians, in Islam homosexuality is punished by death.”

I know. It’s terrifying and abhorrent to see ISIS throwing those poor men off rooftops. Did you see where some men had been tricked into thinking they were going on a secret date, only to be stoned to death? Can you imagine if that happened here? To me? Rips my heart out.

Wait. You didn’t mean that in a “just be thankful you aren’t being thrown off a roof” sort of way, did you? Not only would that be a cruel and insulting stance to take, it’s complete bottomfeeder mentality. It’s settling for simply not being as terrible as the other guy, rather than rising to excellence. America thinks of itself a beacon of freedom. On the cutting edge of liberty. (Oh, except Ireland beat us to it this time.)

“…the media has you all gassed up against Christians.”

I’ll be honest. This one gets my gay goat. Not once have we spoken as adults. Yet somehow you are assuming my opinions are flippant, that the “media” has tricked my gullible self into a vapid stance. Let me catch you up on where I’ve been since we last saw each other in, like, 1989. In high school I was the church golden boy. Our small-town religious community thought of me as a kid with a promising future for Jesus. The next Billy Graham perhaps. So when puberty hit and the first waves of sexuality came to be, it was troublesome. I tried to deny and suppress to no avail. I was gay. And in that community, there’s nothing worse. By the time I was attending Exodus Ministries “pray away the gay” meetings, it had all escalated into full on emotional torture. Looking back, it was absolutely mental abuse. I digress.

All this to say, my thoughts and opinions are hard-won. I suffered for them. I didn’t flip a coin. A talking head on a liberal news channel isn’t thinking for me. I’m actually living this experience. I find it so curious that many heterosexuals have obviously theorized about the gay experience without listening to those who are actually in it.

“Me personally I couldn’t care less who or even what you marry.”

When you imply that you don’t care “who or what” I marry, it’s degrading. It hints at the idea of two men marrying is a step toward a man marrying a tree or a dog. I’ll choose a “who” thank you. His name is Del Ray. He’s really wonderful and I hope that it will be legal for us to marry in Tennessee someday. If you can find it within yourself to care even just a little about who or what I marry, I’ll send you an invitation. (And I fully expect one of the more expensive registered items to make up for all this nonsense.)

“Just stop telling me I have to accept it. Mind your business and I’ll mind mine. Why is that so Goddamn hard?”

You personally don’t have to accept it, I suppose. It’s America after all. Think, believe and say whatever you wish. However, telling a community who was previously without a voice to shut up is a bit suspicious. That’s why it’s so goddamned hard.

Robert De Niro Tells Graduating Art Students: ‘You’re F***ed’

“You made it,” actor Robert De Niro told New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts graduates on Friday. “And you’re f***ed.”

The reality check to aspiring actors, dancers and others with creative degrees in the opening lines of De Niro’s commencement speech received an uproarious applause.

“The graduates in accounting? They all have jobs,” the legendary actor continued. “Where does that leave you? Envious of those accountants? I doubt it. They had a choice. Maybe they were passionate about accounting but I think it’s more likely that they used reason and logic and common sense to reach for a career that could give them the expectation of success and stability. Reason, logic, common sense at the Tisch School of Arts? Are you kidding me? But you didn’t have that choice, did you? You discovered a talent, developed an ambition and recognized your passion.”

That aversion to practical thinking, he told students, is what will make them successful.

“When it comes to the arts, passion should always trump common sense,” De Niro told the new alums. “You aren’t just following dreams, you’re reaching for your destiny. You’re a dancer, a singer, a choreographer, a musician, a filmmaker, a writer, a photographer, a director, a producer, an actor, an artist. Yeah, you’re f***ed. The good news is that that’s not a bad place to start.”

De Niro, a two-time Oscar winner, warned students to expect rejection and to not take it personally, like when he jokingly found out he couldn’t play Martin Luther King Jr. in “Selma.”

In the end, he sounded confident that the Tisch graduates will get their big breaks.

“I’m here to hand out my pictures and resumes to the directing and producing graduates.”

Mark Ruffalo Tells Grads: ‘Activist Is Not A Dirty Word’

Actor Mark Ruffalo received the Sam Rose ’58 and Julie Waters Prize at Dickinson College for Global Environmental Activism at the school’s commencement on Sunday. The prize includes $ 100,000, which Ruffalo said will go directly to Water Defense, a nonprofit dedicated to clean water access that he co-founded.

Ruffalo gave a short speech in accepting the prize where he urged graduates to fight for whatever cause they truly believe in.

“I’m here to tell you that ‘activist’ is not a dirty word,” he said.

Ruffalo said that this generation of graduates is in a unique position with so many people having access to tools and platforms to “create the world that you can imagine.” He asked graduates to dedicate work to challenging climate change, corporatization, environmental degradation and social justice issues.

“I’m asking each of you at some point or another to act up,” Ruffalo said. “Be misbehaved. Buck the system. Fight for what you believe in. This is the time to do it; you’re the ones to do it.”

Teen Calmly Tells Mom To ‘Man Up’ And Stop Making Excuses For Her Behavior

Eighteen-year-old Sarah has been in the care of her grandparents for the last year, and they recently gained custody of her younger sister — an arrangement Sarah supports, but that her mom believes is unfair.

“I believe my mom is mentally ill right now,” says Sarah. “For a lot of my life, I felt like I’ve been more of the mother in the mother/daughter relationship, and me telling her right from wrong. I definitely feel like it’s not fair for other people having to keep taking responsibility for my mom. My mom had us. We’re her children. I think it’s her responsibility to grow up and take care of us.”

In the video above from Monday’s episode of Dr. Phil, Sarah tells her mom: “I feel like right now you’re just acting like … you’re just not admitting to the mistakes that you know you’ve made. You told me you’re going to come on this show and try to get help, but you can’t sit here and point the finger at everyone else. I understand that, yeah, you believe some things didn’t work out the way they should, and some things were said about you that weren’t true. But if you really want help, you’re going to have man up and say, ‘I shouldn’t have done that. I should have been a better parent. I should have done these things, and I’m willing to change, and I’m willing to be that person.'”

What No One Tells You About Working in Fashion

2015-05-07-1431014929-1118615-JordanMurphyInstagram.JPG
Instagram/JordanLambertM

Throughout my high school years, I was always captivated by the fashion industry. Though I lived in the South in a town of 50,000, I poured over the pages of Elle and Vogue, hoping that one day I could be as chic as Kate Moss (Don’t look at me like that — we’ve all been there.). Summer after my freshman year of college, I began an internship at a fashion magazine in New York, expecting my experience to rival that of Anne Hathaway’s in The Devil Wears Prada. Though exclusive in their own ways, as every office tends to be, the editors and staff were nothing but nice. However, I quickly realized New York was not my cup of Yerba Mate, so I headed west to Los Angeles where I would begin my descent into fashion public relations.

Internships in fashion PR are anything but glamorous. Sure, you may try to look “trendy” the first couple of weeks — perhaps even wearing heels! Ha. But once you realize that your number one job is schlepping garment bags, it’s all sneakers and Madewell tees from here on out. Who needs a Class Pass subscription when you’re regularly lugging around 40 pounds of sequins? After two rounds of internships, I was a pro at wrapping up evening gowns and organizing racks. And guess what? After three years in the biz, I still had to wrestle with the occasional garment bag. If you want to work in fashion, be not afraid of good old-fashioned manual labor.

Working in any area of fashion is not for the faint of heart. The sound bites I have heard over the years range from “Girls should start getting Botox at 19 years old,” to “You look SO good — like anorexic good,” which is basically the holy grail of compliments in the industry. Considering said industry revolves around stick-thin supermodels and unattainably perfect celebrities, body image is a prolific and ever-present issue. Being surrounded by these images 24/7 takes a toll, so it’s important, for sanity’s sake, to develop a thick skin.

Another unforeseen side effect of working in fashion is that shopping will become a chore. You are bombarded with headlines like “The Next BIG Trend in Denim” and “5 Staples Every Fashion Girl Needs” on a daily basis, so it’s no wonder that shopping becomes a more frustrating experience than an enjoyable one. While browsing Nordstrom, you go back and forth on buying an off-the-shoulder peasant top thinking, “Well, 70’s style is supposedly making a comeback, but will it last into next season? Am I buying too much into trends? Will everyone be wearing a peasant top/suede skirt combo this summer? God forbid I look ripped off the page of a Coachella style story…” Working in a showroom or studio, you will begin to notice the tug-o-war between wanting to keep up with current trends while also being too-cool-for-school anti-trend. Hence, the absurd amount of drapey tees, boyfriend jeans, and overpriced sneakers worn in showrooms and by stylists.

Finally, the thing I never anticipated when starting out in the industry was that I would be thrust into the finicky politics of the entertainment industry. Every industry has its own power struggles, but the constant back and forth between publicists, editors, studios, and designers deserves a league of its own. Attempting to keep all of these headstrong individuals happy and complacent is a daily struggle of plate-spinning proportions. Managing expectations and overseeing critical conversations are a part of the job description, so it’s key to be prepared and confident.

Despite the less-than-dignified working conditions and demanding industry politics, the perks of working in fashion make it worth it. Working with insanely cool creative people never gets old and the occasional freebies are a welcome incentive. If you’re a passionate, hardworking misfit, the fashion industry may be the perfect place for you. Just don’t be afraid of getting your Reformation top dirty.

Kim and Ryan say they are terrified of their 7-year-old son, Rylan, whose imaginary friend “Bleeder” threatens to kill them. “My biggest fear is that we’re raising a school shooter, a mass murderer, a serial killer,” says Kim. Watch their story here.

Rylan has spent nearly half of his life in hospitals, and has been on a long list of medications to treat him — a course of action with which Kim’s sister, Stacy, does not agree.

“They have constantly put him in hospitals and medicated him rather than actually raising him and showing him unconditional love and structure,” says Stacy. “She would rather drop him off at a hospital and have him medicated rather than parenting him. Whenever he does act up, they give him another pill, call the police, sedate him.”

She adds, “When I talk to Kim about what she’s doing with Rylan, she doesn’t want to acknowledge that she could be making a mistake. She’s very defensive.”

Kim and her ex-husband Ryan disagree vehemently. “That’s so far from the truth,” says Kim.

“Walk a mile in our shoes,” adds Ryan.

Gillette #UseYourAnd Ad Tells Women To Move Beyond Labels (But Still Shave Their Legs)

“You are warmth and wisdom. And grace and guts. No ‘ifs’ or ‘buts,’ just ‘ands.'”

That is the message behind Gillette Venus’ #UseYourAnd campaign. The spot features a diverse group of young women playing sports, reading, laughing and playing music, while another young woman performs spoken word, encouraging women everywhere to break free from the boxes they have been placed in.

“One dimensional labels limit your potential,” reads the text at the end of the minute and a half video. “Venus invites women everywhere to #UseYourAnd.”

The message behind the campaign is an important one: Women (and men) should work to break down gender-based barriers. After all, it’s those stereotypes and labels that encourage a society where women are paid less than men for doing the same work, where women’s value is often reduced to their looks, where boys are told to “be a man” no matter the cost and where college sexual assault is a true epidemic.

Yes, labels hurt and limit women. But Gillette loses us a little bit when considering that the spot is ultimately promoting a razor. It’s basically saying, Hey ladies! Ditch all those demeaning and limiting labels — except that body hair stuff. Definitely shave your legs, armpits and any other area of the body deemed necessary by the powers that be.

We appreciate the pseudo-feminist effort, but we’d prefer to #UseOurAnd to lose the one-dimensonal labels AND the faux-empowering aspects of the beauty industry.

Bill Cosby Jokes About Sex Assault Allegations, Tells Woman “Be Careful Drinking Around Me”

A report from Bill Cosby’s show in London, Ontario tonight says that the embattled comedian made a joke about the sexual assault allegations against him. Cosby’s exact words to a woman in the audience were “be careful about drinking around me,” according to the National Post.

The drink joke happened in the middle of the show after a woman got up from her seat to get something to drink. Cosby played to a mostly receptive crowd who cheered at his quip, the National Post reports says.

However, two men were booted from the show after one of them heckled Cosby. The man screamed, “We don’t love you Bill” and “I’m being kicked out because you’re a rapist!” as he was removed.

Cosby has been accused of drugging more than two dozen women, many over 30 years ago. He has denied the allegations.

Co-star Phylicia Rashad recently came out in support of her former TV husband, pointing to a ploy to keep him off of television, and ruin his “legacy.”

Michael Sam Tells Oprah Heartbreaking Childhood Bullying Story (VIDEO)

Coming out as a gay athlete takes courage — just ask Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL. In his first television interview since being cut from the Dallas Cowboys, Sam opens up to Oprah about the painful experiences he endured as a child.

One of eight children, Sam grew up in the small town of Hitchcock, Texas. Of his five brothers, one was killed, and another was declared dead after going missing. Sam says his remaining older brothers were always getting into trouble and known around town as the “damn Sams.”

“They used to abuse me daily,” Sam says in the above video. “Maybe just for fun. Maybe because I was different.”

“They called me a lot of things,” he says. “They called me fag, they called me gay — anything you could think of, just to hurt me.”

Sam threw himself into sports, and in the seventh grade, received his first honors in football, basketball and track. “For the first time in my life, I got a trophy,” he says.

“Validation,” Oprah nods.

“Yes, and my mom was so proud of me and it was the first time any of her kids had achievement that high,” Sam says. “It was most valuable player. And I was so proud of those trophies.”

But his joy quickly was shattered. “My older [brother], he was so jealous and he just broke them in front of me, and it was just the saddest thing,” Sam says. “I couldn’t have anything without them destroying it or taking it from me.”

Oprah’s full interview with Sam airs Saturday, December 27, at 10:30 ET, following the premiere of the exclusive “Michael Sam” documentary at 9 p.m. ET on OWN.

George Takei Tells Bill Maher Why He Can’t Stand William Shatner

The fact that “Star Trek” costars George Takei and William Shatner don’t get along in real life is a sad thing for Trekkies to face.

While visiting “Real Time With Bill Maher,” Takei addressed his longtime feud with the original Captain Kirk. Maher joked, “But he’s Canadian, he should love you!” before Takei went on to explain how, for him, Shatner is the exception to that myth. “Canadians have a certain image of being even-tempered and friendly and all that,” Takei said. “He is a person who is that way with himself … he is very self-centered.”

Takei said that despite their disagreements they still acted like professionals on set, though “with a lot of difficulty.” Check out the full clip above.

Rita Ora Gives GLAM4GOOD Her Definition of Beauty, and Tells What She Wears for Good Luck

2014-05-13-PINSPIRATION_TITLEcopy.jpeg

From designers to musicians, supermodels to Hollywood’s hottest stars, GLAM4GOOD asks the world’s most influential pop culture icons to share their thoughts on the true meaning of beauty and style.

GLAM4GOOD loves Rita Ora for her sick fashion sense, cool tunes and social media genius. Ora has exploded onto the scene to become one of the world’s hottest “It Girls.” She sings, models and acts in a big, bold beautiful way and tells GLAM4GOOD she wants to inspire people everywhere to be courageous in everything they do.

Ora is a fashion risk taker and is quickly becoming a style icon. GLAM4GOOD asked her how she thinks fashion empowers.

Fashion gives people a sense of identity through expression of clothes and appearance. You can wear things that mean a lot to you, all my jewellery is from my mother or grandmother and gifts. I wear a ring for good luck, for example, when I perform! Fashion gives me the confidence to look and feel great.

We asked Ora to tell us her definition of beauty and what words of wisdom she would give young people everywhere:

“True beauty is knowing who you are and believing in yourself. Happy people know their purpose, have courage to fight for it and strength to keep going.”

Check out Rita Ora’s official site, and in the album below, find more inspiring quotes from our GLAM4GOOD Pinspiration Series. Read, like and share the jewels of wisdom from five of the world’s most influential fashion designers: Carolina Herrera, Tommy Hilfiger, Donna Karan, John Varvatos and Jason Wu.
