Chance The Rapper Says Beyoncé Is Better Performer Than Michael Jackson At Dillard Graduation

Chance the Rapper performs at Eagle Bank Arena

Chance the Rapper wants to secure a Beyoncé feature so bad bruh. While speaking at the commencement for Dillard University, the Chicago MC told the assembled graduated that Queen Bey’s Coachella performance was better than any of Michael Jackson’s, ever.

This guy.

We get what Chance was trying to say—you have to aspire to be greater than your predecessors. That’s cool.

But there’s a time and a place for that. The focus should be on the graduates, not a petty debate.

Fake News Spreads On Twitter Faster Than The Truth, Per Study

Twitter suspends thousands of accounts for pro-terrorism and violence contents

Source: Anadolu Agency / Getty

Fake News owns Twitter, well according to a new study that is the case. Three researchers at MIT published a story in Science that points out that “fake news” travels faster, further and deeper and more broadly and it’s not bots doing the work but humans.

That’s pretty alarming when you seriously think about it.

How did they come to this conclusion?  Here is their breakdown of the study and how they came to their results:

“We investigated the differential diffusion of all of the verified true and false news stories distributed on Twitter from 2006 to 2017. The data comprise ~126,000 stories tweeted by ~3 million people more than 4.5 million times. We classified news as true or false using information from six independent fact-checking organizations that exhibited 95 to 98% agreement on the classifications. Falsehood diffused significantly farther, faster, deeper, and more broadly than the truth in all categories of information, and the effects were more pronounced for false political news than for false news about terrorism, natural disasters, science, urban legends, or financial information. We found that false news was more novel than true news, which suggests that people were more likely to share novel information. Whereas false stories inspired fear, disgust, and surprise in replies, true stories inspired anticipation, sadness, joy, and trust. Contrary to conventional wisdom, robots accelerated the spread of true and false news at the same rate, implying that false news spreads more than the truth because humans, not robots, are more likely to spread it.”

With news and information readily at your fingertips, you would think to be able to fact check or source checking these stories would be the norm. “Fake news” and propaganda has been linked to influencing our election but it’s very troubling to learn that humans are to blame instead of bots. Gotta be careful what you’re sharing on Twitter or any other social media platform for that matter. Head over to Science to read the full study.

Kodak Black Freestyling For 12 Minutes Even Worse Than You Can Imagine

Black Thought set the bar ridiculously high for even the greatest of MC’s after his masterful 10-minute freestyle. Of course, other rappers are going to attempt something similar—but no one asked Kodak Black to try.

Nevertheless, the Painting Pictures rapper dropped a video of himself freestyling for about 12 minutes.

Kodak Black is not known for delivering bars. But his freestyle manages to be even worse than you can possibly imagine. We’re not even go to bother translating any of the struggle lines because they’re just that terrible.

If you look at the comments, there are plenty of supporters who think this is lit. Don’t be fooled.

Parents Say There’s One Thing Worse Than Having Son Diagnosed With Terminal Cancer

After their son, Kirk II, was diagnosed with liver cancer and told he had only six months to live, Laurie and Kirk Sr. claim that the woman who previously had left their son at the altar ran — not walked — to tie the knot this time.

“I believe Star was seeing dollar signs with my dying son. She married him for his life insurance money,” claims Laurie. “Star is manipulative, and she is out for Star … Star has physically, emotionally and financially destroyed my son.”

Star admits she has cheated on Kirk twice and that she hit him once, but she vehemently denies that she’s after his money. “Kirk’s family has judged me since day one,” says Star, who says she wishes they would back off. “They make me out to be this evil person.”

Why is Kirk II eager to save his marriage? Can it even be saved? Should his parents butt out? Watch more from Friday’s episode of Dr. Phil here.

Judging by what’s on the Internet, we understand why it might seem like every single guy in the world has either a beard on his face or a bun on his head (we’ve certainly given our fair share of coverage to this important subject of our time).

So with all this hair flying around, we were reminded of one of life’s great mysteries: Why are some guys’ beards a different color than the rest of their hair?

We turned to dermatologist Dr. Bobby Buka, founder of Greenwich Village Dermatology in New York, who said it basically comes down to pigments and genetics.

“The difference between red hair and blonde hair or brown hair is different types of melanin,” Buka said, referring to the pigment packs that bring color to our hair (without it, our hair is white).

One type of melanin, a very light type called pheomelanin, is responsible for blonde or red hair, and eumelanin is the darker melanin found in darker-toned hair. How it gets distributed through the shaft of each hair and in what combinations is what determins our hair color, and it can vary by each individual follicle.

“The other component that contributes to color is the distribution of the melanin from the base of the hair follicle to the rest of the shaft,” Buka said. “That transfer process is genetic, and so redheads have more pheomelanin and their pigment stays at the base of the hair follicle, and black-haired people have more eumelanin and transfers throughout the shaft.”

The same goes for each follicle on your head, so those around your jaw and neck might have a different eumelanin-to-pheomelanin ratio than say, what’s on the top of your head.

For what it’s worth, our skin has pigments to protect ourselves from ultraviolet rays, but Buka pointed out that our hair doesn’t need UV protection. So why is there a biological reason that our hair would have pigments? “I can’t see why we would have one,” he said.

It seems some mysteries still need to be solved.

15 Questions For Women On The Red Carpet That Are Better Than ‘What Are You Wearing?’

On  the red carpet, women celebrities often get the “rabbit food” questions, which means that essentially they’re only asked about what they eat and what they wear. Amy Poehler’s “Smart Girls” is trying to change that.

On Sept. 10, Poehler’s organization “Smart Girls” launched a campaign called #SmartGirlsAsk to generate more meaningful and intellectual conversations on the red carpet. With the Emmy Awards taking place on Sept. 20, Smart Girls hopes some of these questions could even be used this Sunday.

In partnership with the Television Academy, Smart Girls asked people on Twitter: “What compelling questions would you ask on the red carpet?”

The campaign, which follows in the footsteps of The Representation Project’s #AskHerMore, generated hundreds of responses from people of all genders on Twitter — and even got a shout out from Hillary Clinton and “Scandal” star Katie Lowes. The questions ranged from “what advice would you give your younger self?” to “what’s your favorite sports team?”

The overwhelming response to #SmartGirlsAsk proves that more meaningful conversations can and should be happening on the red carpet. Hearing about a woman’s beautiful gown is great, but it would be equally great to hear about her career trajectory and the accomplishments that led her to be on the red carpet in the first place.

Here are 15 questions we would love to hear the answers to on the red carpet:

We look forward to (hopefully) hearing a few of these questions at the Emmys!

Head over to Twitter to read more awesome questions from #SmartGirlsAsk.

Why The Language You Use Is More Powerful Than You Think

An all-new season of Dr. Phil premieres September 14!  Watch a preview here.

“I think the power of language is amazingly strong,” says Dr. Phil, explaining that the words we use — even if only to ourselves — can impact our reality.

Watch the video above as Dr. Phil explains to Leslie, who went through a bitter divorce with her ex-husband of 22 years, how her dramatic choice of words about their circumstances may be fueling her anger even more.

“You’re 100 percent right. This is self-defeating behavior,” admits Leslie.

So how will she make peace when she believes her ex has cheated her out of money? Dr. Phil tells her, “You’ve got to stop being a victim; you’ve got to start being a victor. You’ve got to get back in the game.”

Offering to assist her with professional resources, Dr. Phil says, “I can’t tell you that I can change your past. Not even God can change what has happened … The best revenge is living well … You need to star in your own life.”

The Most Romantic Labor Day Escape Is Closer Than You Think

date night museum

Sure, it’s Labor Day weekend—the last stretch of summer before the AC-blasted return to the sterile cubicle. You’re probably feeling tempted to skip town with the beau and enjoy a hair-tossing adventure in the Hamptons or a last-minute frolic on the Burning Man playa. Hell, you may even book a long weekend to Ibiza and call it a year. But the idea of those FOMO-fueled, Instagram-inspired jaunts can be exhausting. What’s so attractive about capping the hot weather season off with jet lag and a suitcase full of dirty laundry? Consider this: Maybe your escape is much closer than you think. Maybe it doesn’t require a suitcase, a time change, traffic, or the TSA pat-down. Maybe it’s a museum! The romantic nature of the exhibit-trawling outing is not to be underestimated—there’s an intimacy to wandering huge, beautiful spaces together, your voices hushed in respectful tones. You’re exploring, you’re learning something new, and also, it may be worth noting, you’re in the AC.

Need some inspiration? At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the record-breaking “China: Through the Looking Glass” exhibition is extended until September 7, along with late-night hours tonight and tomorrow. A wealth of fashion (ranging from the traditional Manchu robe to contemporary Chinese-inspired designs by Tom Ford and John Galliano) combines with a deep visual history, including Ming furniture and ancient perfume bottles for something that exists nowhere else. So why not take advantage before it ends?

As for the night at the museum attire? Half the fun’s in dressing up. Take inspiration from the guests of this year’s Met Gala and elevate your wing-hopping look. Maybe it is something à la Beyonce with a polka-dot, curve-skimming frock. Or maybe take some editorial cues from a Mario Testino–lensed Joan Smalls and opt for a white pantsuit. And when in doubt? Keep it classic with a polished jacket and skirt set—plus a pop of color derived from an accessory. After all, plane tickets come and go—but this exhibition is once in a lifetime. Dress accordingly.

atlantique ascoli

Brooches, stoles . . . estate-sale chic is going strong. And even for those who aren’t quite ready to embrace an eclectic vision à la Alessandro Michele, a little bit of ladylike appeal goes a long way. Enter Atlantique Ascoli, the eponymous brainchild of a Parisian musician, whose cult-y range of polished blouses has won her an array of well-heeled fans since launching in 2013.

A labor of love if ever there was one, like many before her, for Ascoli it wasn’t a gap in the industry she was combating so much as it was a gap in her wardrobe. “I didn’t think in terms of market,” she says, “as I didn’t know anything about it. I started the line organically because I had in mind particular shapes, textures, volumes, and how clothes hang on the body that I couldn’t find elsewhere and that I wanted to wear myself.” The result is a range of tops, whipped up in crisp al prato cotton, that plays with sculptural, Victorian ruffles and quietly eccentric levels of volume. New to the lineup are her skirts and dresses, equally easy and soigné. There’s an ineffable quality to Ascoli’s designs—girlish in places but all woman; her impeccable, high-necked blouses are clearly the clothes of she who has her life in order. The dichotomy between frilly and purely feminine stems from Ascoli’s hometown style. As she tells it, “I think the Parisian cares and is conscious about her allure, but when she gets going, she lets go and forgets about it.” Perhaps that accounts for the wide-ranging appeal of her considered pieces, a blank slate for women of all ages looking to add a touch more polish to their day-to-day. Case in point: Atlantique Ascoli has proved just as logical a buy for stockists like Dover Street Market as it is for ladies who lunch snapping them up at Barneys. You’ll find Ascoli’s latest offering at both, as well as Colette, The Webster Miami, and Net-a-Porter.

Models Who Love Their Dogs More Than Their Selfies

Photo: Courtesy of Jessica Hart / @jessicahart

If your feed was infiltrated by tail-wagging, floppy-tongued pups juxtaposed with the gleaming faces of models today, you can thank National Dog Day. And it was courtesy of that trending hashtag that we found that plenty of pretty catwalkers lead pooch-centric lives, on and off the runway. Take it from Miranda Kerr, who has posed for editorials and campaigns alongside her Yorkie, Frankie; or Jessica Hart and her dog, Floyd, who has his own instagram account dedicated to his adventures. And even Angel Rutledge, Chipotle’s finest find, maintains a social media presence for her hound dog, Mo.

There’s also Alana Zimmer, who has mastered the art of selfies with her tuft-coiffed canines, Angel Rea and Zip, while Willow Hand always seems able to have her bite-sized little one ready for a snap. Suvi Koponen Riggs gets her exercise at the dog park, while Martha Hunt takes her little one, Bear, for long walks on the beach. But who has the best time of all? Georgia May Jagger knows how to capture a heartwearming, pillow-laden moment with her four-legged “Dink.” Woof!

Women Initiate Divorces More Than Men, But Not Breakups, Study Suggests

Women are more likely than men to utter the words, “I want a divorce” — but women and men are equally likely to initiate a non-marital breakup, according to a new study.

Michael Rosenfeld, an associate professor of sociology at Stanford University, examined data from Stanford’s 2009-2015 How Couples Meet and Stay Together project, a nationally representative longitudinal study of relationships and breakups. Rosenfeld looked at 2,262 adults, ages 19 to 94, who had opposite sex partners in 2009. By 2015, 371 of these people had split up or gotten divorced.

While breakups between unmarried couples were gender neutral – men were just as likely as women to initiate them — when it came to divorce, Rosenfeld found that wives initiated 69 percent of splits, compared to 31 percent of men.

“Women’s tendency to initiate divorce was well known but the gender neutrality I found for non-marital breakups was not, because previous surveys never bothered to ask people who wanted the breakup in non-marital relationships,” Rosenfeld told The Huffington Post.

That’s an important consideration, Rosenfeld said, because social scientists previously argued that women were more likely to initiate divorce simply because they were more sensitive to relationship difficulties. If that were true, women would initiate divorce and breakups at equal rates — but Rosenfeld found that wasn’t the case.

That distinction may have something to do with how women feel about marriage in general. According to Rosenfeld’s analysis, not only are women more inclined to end a marriage, they’re also less satisfied while married. Married women reported lower levels of relationship quality than married men, he found. In contrast, unmarried women and men reported equal levels of relationship quality.

So what is it about marriage that leaves women less satisfied and more likely to walk away? Rosenfeld told HuffPost that the findings give credence to the feminist idea that some women feel stifled and oppressed by heterosexual marriage.

“It supports the theory that sociologists refer to as ‘the stalled gender revolution,‘  meaning that as much as women’s roles in society have changed, women’s roles within the families have changed very slowly,” he said, citing husband’s expectation for wives to do the bulk of the housework and childcare, even when both spouses work.

Rosenfeld’s findings were presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association over the weekend.  Read the full study here.

News in Brief: Report: Distracted Driving Results In More Than 5,000 Unfinished Texts Each Year

WASHINGTON—Describing the findings as “deeply troubling,” the U.S. Department of Transportation released a report Tuesday revealing that the growing epidemic of distracted driving is responsible for more than 5,000 unfinished text messages a year. “Far too often, drivers concentrating on their phones instead of the road lose control of their vehicles and get into accidents, tragically cutting short the messages they were attempting to type,” Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said of the report, which reviewed six years’ worth of gruesome automobile crashes that ended the texts of the drivers involved. “Of all these messages that were lost, many were very brief and still had many more words to go. Now, we will never know what they might have said, or where they might have been sent. Their abrupt, mid-sentence endings were both sad and unnecessary.” The report strongly urged citizens to avoid texting while driving, noting that …

DON’T PRETEND LIKE YOU HAVE TO LEAVE!

Sure, those shoes are worth more than our lives but, you know, we have crocs that look just like ’em. We got them for $ 4.

Guy’s too good for “waving out the window time!” Well, we’ve been waving for HOURS! I took off work for this, and Prince George thinks it’s cool to give us this “Is he waving or is he just touching the window?” nonsense.

Wait.

News in Brief: Body Breaking Down In Totally Different Order Than Man Expected

ANDOVER, MA—While saying he’d always known that “everything would fall apart eventually,” 45-year-old Bruce Lifschitz admitted his surprise to reporters Friday that his body was breaking down in a completely different order than he expected it would. “I’ve had knee pain since I was in my 20s, so I honestly thought those would be the first to cause me real problems, but nope; my back completely gave out on me out of nowhere, and now I can’t move between a sitting and standing position without it flaring up,” said Lifschitz, adding that he had also previously predicted he would be fully bald by this point, but noted with astonishment that his ongoing hair loss had been outpaced by his chronic heartburn and sharply increasing blood pressure. “I thought it was going to go: knees first, then hair, then prostate, and then maybe eyesight and memory after …

News in Brief: Winning Argument With Aging Parents Less Satisfying Than It Once Was

CINCINNATI—After firmly telling them that she was okay paying city prices and that she would not move back to her hometown just because it was cheaper, local woman Ellen Wallace, 40, confirmed Thursday that winning an argument with her parents has become much less satisfying as they have gotten older. “We used to get into these half-hour-long ordeals where we’d both get pretty worked up, but now they seem to run out of energy pretty quickly and just stop talking if I go on for more than a few minutes,” said Wallace, who explained that she used to relish those times when she could get her parents to give some ground on a disagreement, but that their advancing age had left them unwilling, or unable, to put up much more than a meager challenge that she could easily shout down. “They gave me a little pushback just now …

Women Handle Breakups Differently Than Men, Suggests Study

Academic studies can be fascinating… and totally confusing. So we decided to strip away all of the scientific jargon and break them down for you.

The Background
After studying romantic relationships for over 30 years, biological anthropologist Helen Fisher concluded, “We humans are soft-wired to suffer terribly when we are rejected by someone we adore.” Nowhere is this more apparent than in breakups. Countless songs, poems, books and movies have been inspired by them, and researchers like Fisher have spent decades trying to nail down romantic rejection. But if heartbreak is both universal and specific, can we narrow down the experience according to gender? Researchers from Binghamton University and University College London recently conducted a study to find out

The Setup
The study was based on an online survey of 5,705 English-speaking men and women from 96 different countries. The average age was 27. In the survey, participants were asked about their romantic relationship history. Questions about breakups included: Have you experienced a breakup? How severe was the breakup for you emotionally? Who do you feel initiated the breakup? What sort of physical responses did you experience as a result of the breakup?

Then, participants were asked to rate their responses to breakups on a scale from zero (none) to 10 (unbearable).

The Findings
Unsurprisingly, breakups were pretty common, with 75 percent of participants reporting the experience. Women tended to take breakups a bit harder, reporting significantly higher levels of emotional responses than men. They also showed a higher “fear” response and experienced unwanted weight loss or gain after a breakup more often.

But things evened out a bit when it came to how men and women assessed their own responses to heartbreak — both sexes averaged a seven out of 10 when asked to rate the intensity of their breakups. Plus, it’s not like the women were left helplessly flailing — more often than not, they were the ones initiating the breakups (something research has found time and again). “Lack of communication” was the most common reason for splits.

The Takeaway
Clearly, these findings are huge generalizations and may only apply to the people in this particular sample. Still, it’s interesting that women tended to not only feel the impact of a breakup more acutely, but they were also the ones who really thought about the state of their relationships and made decisions to change things in their lives for the better. That kind of agency is actually pretty empowering for women. Not to mention, allowing yourself to emote without shame or judgement isn’t such a bad thing, either — that’s how people grow and learn from their experiences.

At the end of the day, isn’t connecting with people and, you know, feeling things the point of it all? Just make sure you’re equipped with some of that aforementioned breakup music.

Divorce – The Huffington Post

Need to File for a Divorce!

What is Better Than a Republic?

Most of you would agree that our democratic system (a republic) is flawed in many ways, and yet it is still better than all the known alternatives.

So I thought I would come up with a better alternative.

Keep in mind that the Constitution of the United States was written before the Internet. I doubt the founders would have created the system we have today if they had better tools. So I will try to extend their thinking to modern times, when the Internet provides us with more options.

I think you would agree that the best political system would involve a talented and enlightened dictator that had the best interests of the people at heart. Unfortunately, that sort of dictator is rare, and succession planning is problematic. So the dictator plan has too many risks.

I have suggested in the past that a good system would involve a dictator wearing a bomb vest that could be detonated at any time by a majority vote of the public. That would keep the dictator working on behalf of the majority, but you can see lots of problems with that system as well. Hackers would blow up the president in about ten minutes. I wouldn’t let that politician kiss my baby.

Our current system – a republic – is obviously broken because the majority is not getting its way for issues that are good for all. For example, a strong majority of voters in California wants to legalize doctor-assisted dying, but the state politicians have tabled it. As a result of our republic not serving the best interests of the people, old folks are suffering by the thousands, maybe millions.

And weed is still a federal crime here. The majority of citizens would legalize weed, and that would be disproportionately good for minority groups that tend to be over-jailed for marijuana possession. That’s an example of the majority protecting a minority, even if it is only out of self-interest. (That’s how it generally works. Educated people understand that oppressing minorities is a bad strategy for everyone in the long run.)

Gay marriage would have happened sooner with a pure democracy. And here again the prime beneficiaries of a pure democracy would be a minority group. That is the opposite of what you expect with “mob rule.” And we can see that when the majority votes in its own enlightened best interests, it usually bodes well for the non-majority as well. I think you would have to go back in history to pre-Internet days to find an example of the majority abusing the minority. You see that behavior most where the Internet coverage is the least.

My hypothesis is that a pure democracy coupled with the Internet would create an almost “super morality” situation in which we would find our best selves. In other words, I believe a real democracy, supported by modern communication tools, would drive the risk of “mob rule” to zero.

Let me give you some bad analogies to make my point.

Consider firing squads used for executions. By tradition, one of the guns is loaded with blanks, so shooters can never know who did the killing. When your actions are DIRECTLY linked to an outcome, as opposed to being diluted by probability, you feel and perhaps act differently. Likewise, if I vote for a politician, and the politician does something bad, I don’t take it as a personal failing. I think the politician failed in that situation, not me.

But if I get to vote on every issue, I feel a personal responsibility to the people affected. There is a big difference between watching your elected representatives abuse a minority group and doing it yourself. I can tolerate other people being evil – because I can’t fix the entire world – but I’m not okay with being evil myself.

The big problem with a pure democracy is that voters are – and here I must generalize – under-informed idiots. So one would expect their decisions about complex foreign affairs, or the economy, to be sub-optimal. Our current system tries to fix that problem by making our politicians the experts on behalf of the public. There are two problems with that:

1. Politicians don’t understand the issues either.

2. Special interests can influence politicians.

So here is how I would build a system to solve every problem I have mentioned.

Imagine a system that involves direct citizen voting on every issue. But in addition to voting yes or no on a ballot question you can also assign your vote FOR A PARTICULAR TOPIC to any other voter who is open to that assignment.

For example, I might cast my own direct vote on simple topics, such as gay marriage, weed, and doctor-assisted dying. I feel I know enough about those issues to be useful.

But if the proposed law is about economic policy, I might want to delegate my vote to Paul Krugman, or whoever I thought had the best thinking on that topic.

You could also delegate your vote to your better-informed spouse, a friend, or anyone you would trust making decisions for you. But I would make it illegal to delegate a vote to anyone representing an organization. And I would make it illegal to delegate more than one voter topic to another person. That keeps individuals from becoming too powerful outside their field of expertise.

The beauty of my system is that you never have to wait for elections to improve things. The minute that you hear an expert saying something brilliant on a particular topic, you call up your voting app and assign rights to that expert for all of your votes in the category. If you hear a smarter expert tomorrow, you reassign your vote to that person.

I see no practical way to evolve from our current system to what might be called an Assigned Voter system. So it would have to be tested on a new country. Perhaps it will first be tried on a city built on an ocean platform.

Do you think it would be an improvement over the current system? I am having a hard time finding a flaw in this idea. I know you will do better.

In Top Tech Blog:

I predict that healthcare costs will drop by 90% over the next 20 years. I think IBM’s Watson will take a big bite out of it. So will the flood of inexpensive medical testing devices coming this way. So will nano-robots in your blood. So will our better understanding of diet. And when you can 3D-print your own meds and medical devices, things get interesting. And obviously doctor-assisted dying laws would make a difference because the last year of life is the expensive one.

If you don’t need a doctor or a nurse to do a diagnosis, and you can print your own medicines and medical equipment at home, healthcare costs will plummet. In my own experience, when my healthcare provider, Kaiser, started allowing patients to email their doctors directly, my number of doctor visits for the small stuff dropped by 75%.

When I had my exotic voice problems that rendered me speechless for over three years, I ran up a lot of expenses going from doctor to doctor trying to figure out what was going on. I believe Watson (and big data in general) could take a voice recording of someone with spasmodic dysphonia (my problem) and identify the condition in less than a second. At nearly zero cost.

One would still need to pay for surgery in that case, but Watson could have saved me years of pain.

If you think healthcare costs will slowly rise forever, you are probably 100% wrong. And I also think the norm for the future is to only have healthcare plans for the big issues such as surgery and emergency room visits.

Here’s Why LGBT Equality Must Be About More Than the U.S.

Like many reading this, I was elated over the Supreme Court’s marriage ruling on June 26. Two days later, Jeff (my partner of 20 years) and I joined friends to celebrate New York’s annual LGBT Pride March. And with the timing of the court’s decision, you could feel the hope among the millions of participants marching down Fifth Avenue.

Our joy was colored, however, by the news coming out of Istanbul where activists had tried to celebrate LGBT Pride several hours before New York’s march kicked off. And where attendees were met by riot police armed with water cannons, rubber bullets, and pepper spray. While we were toasting the marriage victory with our mimosas held high here in the U.S., our counterparts in Turkey were running for their very lives.

People who support and work at various points in our movement have been trying to anticipate how our movement should evolve after this historic milestone.

As we go forward, the movement’s agenda in the U.S. includes a number of clear priorities, including employment nondiscrimination, still lacking in the 29 states where a person can be fired on the basis of their sexual orientation. The number of states is even higher (32) for transgender people in search of a secure and stable job.

But we also have to be concerned about countering so-called “religious liberty” legislation being passed in states like Indiana, giving a free pass to those who want to undermine laws protecting LGBT people from discrimination.

These issues are familiar to anyone who has been reading the news headlines following the Supreme Court ruling. Unfortunately, support for LGBT activists abroad has not found its place on that agenda. It’s almost as if our concern for the lives of LGBT people ends at our nation’s shores.

So allow me to go on record by stating: We in the U.S. are not, in fact, the world. We need to cure our movement of its myopia and remember that justice for the LGBT community is a global cause, spreading far beyond our borders.

LGBT activists around the world have repeatedly asked us to support their work to improve such dire circumstances. We need to answer their call.

And yet, I have often heard the argument among LGBT activists here in the States that we already have enough on our plates. We can’t afford to divert our attention elsewhere for fear the U.S. movement will lose its own momentum.

I call bull. And I don’t think many of those asserting that argument fully understand the magnitude of the fatal consequences of inaction.

In more than 75 countries worldwide, you can be arrested simply on the basis of your sexual orientation. These countries have a collective population of over 3 billion — nine times the number of people living in the U.S. and almost 43 percent of the world’s population. In eight of those countries, it’s perfectly legal to be sentenced to death for being gay or lesbian.

I would encourage you to take a moment to reflect on those numbers.

Do you remember the old American Express slogan “Membership has its privileges”? The catchy saying referred to an exclusive set of benefits not available to other credit cardholders. LGBT Americans are similarly entitled to a long list of benefits granted to us through citizenship — usually obtained by the total accident of birth — and increasingly recognized by the institutions that govern our lives.

But these privileges come with the moral obligation for us to help others who by no accident of birth and no fault of their own do not share our good fortune. The LGBT movement here in the States is part of a larger and, sadly, more difficult world for LGBT people. We must see justice in global terms and do our part to ensure others abroad are afforded the same kind of freedoms in their own communities that we here increasingly take for granted.

I recently accompanied Arcus’ trustees on a trip to Africa where we were invited to meet some of the 300 LGBT activists from across the continent who had gathered at a regional conference in Kenya. We left deeply affected by the passionate leaders we met who are leading LGBT activism on a continent that remains both largely misunderstood and nearly completely unfunded. In a world as connected and integrated as ours, there’s simply no excuse for either of those facts.

We cannot and should not turn a blind eye to the grim realities that affect so many LGBT people around the world.

All of us here in the States — individuals, organizations, and funders — can leverage our influence and connections so that LGBT activists abroad can benefit from a broader range of support to achieve their goals. The question is: Will we?

Learn more about Arcus’ Social Justice program and how it works to ensure that individuals and families around the world of every sexual orientation and gender identity are able to live their lives with dignity and respect, and express their love and sense of self.

Robin comes from a blistering past, struggling for survival in a cold, cruel world. Robin never had a chance to dream of a white wedding gown or a prince charming. Instead, her dreams were nightmares — dark and clouded with fear and desperation. By the time Tony thaws her heart, she has known hunger, poverty, violence, and want. For months, Tony courted the blond beauty with the sapphire eyes. He showered with attention, respect, and charm and covered her in diamonds, sapphires, and rubies. Back in bitter cold Boston, doubts about becoming a billionaire's bride begin to burden her hopes for happiness. Robin struggles to cope with the never-ending details of the shower, ceremony, reception, and honeymoon; the prospects of changing her name and relocating; and the very public image she must suddenly adopt; all while dealing with her father's very serious legal problems. As the date draws inexorably near and the pressure mounts, Robin questions whether she is truly the woman God has made for him. Is she the girl of his dreams? His vast material wealth begins to overwhelm her. Nightmares from a forgotten past return in full force, reminding Robin of an even deeper and more terrifying prospect. Will she give in to her insecurities and cancel Boston's "Royal Wedding" for good? How Living Apart Has Made My Spouse And Me Closer Than Ever

Nearly five miles into a Smoky Mountain hike, with family vacation nearing a close, we discussed the next time we would see each other. As we did, a rain-fed stream cascaded beneath the short, wooden footbridge on which we paused to admire butterflies swirling, dancing and darting in a half-dozen hues.

One year after my wife moved 800 miles east for a great opportunity with her long-time employer, we planned our next moments together. The butterflies’ delightful interaction drew some of our attention amidst the majestic mountain terrain and our discussion. Still, even with this distraction, we maintained focus on what really matters.

“I think we’ve spent more real time together in the past year than we had in many years,” Cathy proffered as we walked and planned. “Before, there was always tomorrow.”

During 27 years of marriage, we had long passed the point of taking each other for granted. It didn’t help that we worked opposite schedules for so many years — becoming almost alternating parents. Her nights and weekends in retail often came during the limited hours I wasn’t working or traveling for work. In the unusual hours when we were both together and electronically disconnected from any real or perceived work crisis, we focused on quality time with our children rather than with each other.

In the past year, we’ve made a conscious effort to change that focus. Every three to four weeks, we find somewhere to enjoy time together. Even when those gatherings include our adult children or others, we focus on each other in a way we seem to have missed for many years.

A hand to hold is more important when you know it won’t be there tomorrow. A hug is easier to treasure when the next one is three weeks away.

Looking back, it’s easy to see we didn’t put enough effort into our relationship. It’s also easy to find excuses. Workaholic behavior. Exhaustion from my untreated sleep apnea. Disagreements allowed to remain in roiling boil rather than confronted and settled directly. Treating compromise as lose-lose rather than win-win.

Those excuses don’t matter now.

Time matters. Connection matters. Love matters.

During our first year of living apart, we’ve managed to strengthen our marriage; an outcome I wasn’t sure would happen when the year started. Increased flexibility and adaptability aided our strengthening.

A year ago, I would have laughed if you had predicted my wife would join me on a strenuous five-mile mountain hike, but she did just that in the Smokies. She would have also bet that at least one piece of the Ikea furniture I voluntarily spent three days assembling for her New York apartment would have collapsed by now. I’m no longer annoyed at losing time to her passion for judging figure skating, in part because she only does it on weekends I’m not around. She’s no longer annoyed to come home after a long day at work to find the house in greater disorder than when she left. When she comes home from work, her apartment is exactly as she left it.

It doesn’t mean it’s always easy to be apart. When three weeks stretches into four or more, I sometimes struggle to remain upbeat. On these occasions, I remind myself that at least some studies show “absence makes the heart grow fonder” to be more than a platitude. As our next time together approaches, marking one year apart, I can feel the validity in that phrase.

Butterflies kick in — swirling, dancing and darting in the range of hues I felt when we first met. One year apart but, perhaps, closer than ever.

Need to File for a Divorce!

6 Ways Your Divorce Is Harder Than It Needs to Be

Divorce is generally unpleasant. Oh sure, we all have that friend who sails through it with a smile on their face and a spring in their step, never exhibiting an outward moment of hesitation as they move through the divorce with an almost unicorn-like dignity and grace. Then there are the other 99.999 percent of us. I have been in the ugly tear-stained trenches of it all as my little one was ripped from my arms screaming for his Mommy. I have made some stupid mistakes, more than once. Sometimes I wonder if all the difficulties I have been through are the reason I am effective in this line of work. I promise I will not ask you to do something I haven’t done before, and I really understand how you feel when you sit down in my office overwhelmed and in pain. Real, excruciating, pain that feels as if you have been punched in the gut. Not sleeping. Not eating. Feeling as if you are in a daze and as if all this is happening “to you” without any input, without any control. Your spouse may get your house, your children and steal your financial security, but the process may be more difficult than necessary. I am aware that I am not always easy on my clients. It is my job to tell you what you sometimes do not want to hear. There is no reason to pay someone thousands of dollars to just agree it’s not your fault, unless, of course, that someone is your therapist. There are many different ways to get through this time, some more effective and healthy than others. After 21 years of practicing law, I would like to say I have seen it all, but just about every week we see new forms of additional self-imposed misery. So here are a few tips and what to avoid doing to make this divorce process a little shorter, less traumatic and maybe a little less expensive too.

1. You want what she/he is having.

In divorce, as in life, if you spend the days lamenting over what is going on with your ex, or anyone else for that matter, this will not lead you to your happy place. There will always be someone richer, younger, thinner, smarter, more accomplished along the way. No good comes from worrying about the things others have, material or otherwise. Your ex has a new significant other, a new house, a new car. Your ex is traveling the world (and they never did this with you). Your ex is spending your child support payment on their nails or golf. They are now father or mother of the year, and they never even changed a diaper! You cannot control someone or their actions, but you can control your reactions.

You can choose instead to be happy they stepped up to the plate with the children like they never did before, or that they have a nice house or car for your children to enjoy. You can just be happy they are not your problem anymore. These worries are serious “time wasters” that take the focus away from our own lives and happiness. They also make really crappy conversation starters with a new friend or love interest. Bitter and jealous are simply not fun to be around. As a big believer in Karma, wish them well and then move on to more important issues like your own happiness. Make sure your own glass is half-full or even better overflowing with new love, new friends and a happy home, even if it is a town home.

2. You believe you are not accountable for the failure of your marriage.

You were the kindest, most loving, nurturing spouse that ever was there — I believe you, I really do. Are you at fault? Yes, you married someone who did not believe in your fabulousness. Most of the time, if we are really honest with ourselves, (not always easy or pretty, I know) we might admit, albeit reluctantly, we knew the very thing about our soon to be ex that now leads us running to the divorce lawyer. Of course, there are exceptions to this observation but so very often the signs are right there, the pink elephant we chose to ignore. They were mean to other people, you had wildly different views of the world and life goals, they were financially irresponsible while you saved every penny, and the list goes on. You thought you could “fix them” or perhaps maybe just give up an essential piece of your soul and what matters, to make them happy. Then one day we wake up and realize the marriage is over, or perhaps they decided enough is enough, but we all play a part. When there is no singular fault and when we all accept our piece of where and how it all ends, we move on faster, we fight less, we spend less on lawyers and most importantly, we are less likely to make the same mistake again.

3. You can’t forgive.

Well of course you can, but you just don’t want to. I am NOT going to tell you that you have to forgive — you don’t. It is certainly your prerogative to hold on to that anger and hatred with all the passion and love once directed at your former beloved. You want to hold on to it tightly because it was a really awful horrible thing that was done to you. It is, after all, the reason you are in this mess in the first place, right? Someone else did this to you (see number two above). There are some things that are unforgivable after all, are there not? Someone slept with your best friend, beat you, left you or lied to you. So don’t forgive, but be prepared to pull out your checkbook for your lawyer and the therapist for you and maybe your kids too.

Anger and hatred have a direct correlation to a longer, messier divorce and higher attorneys fees while we punish the wrongdoer. Maybe you can change the dynamic with a little change in perspective. People who hurt us are often broken themselves with complicated stories and reasons that may have little to do with us. Maybe we should feel sorry for them instead of angry? Maybe we should realize how sad it is they will never know how they were loved, or be capable of giving love the way it was intended. The truth is forgiveness is not a favor to others; it is a favor to you. It frees up a space inside you for significantly better things. Think about the words “angry” and “bitter” and think of an image. Do they make you happy, do they look light and beautiful? Sometimes I wonder about the moments of our life. Would our moments be different if a clock was running down the moments left in this life on our new Apple watch? Would we choose to waste them rehashing the harms done to us, or choose moving forward towards more moments of joy? There is huge power in not allowing someone to steal more minutes of your life with anger or regret. So go ahead and stay mad or take back your power, forgive and lower those attorney’s fees, after all.

4. You believe you are entitled to the same life.

I often work against expectations so huge that Cinderella’s fairy Godmother could not deliver them (and don’t get me started on her; that girl has lead more people down the path to divorce, but I digress…). If you come to me or any lawyer believing you can have the same life you had before you divorced, you will be sadly disappointed and will spend unnecessary time and unnecessary fees. The math of divorce is simple division. Divide by two, your income and assets, and multiply by two, the amount of bills. Sounds great, right? I don’t care if your lawyer wrote the book on divorce, the story always has the same ending, everyone will have less. Even in the biggest cases it applies. I call it “park the plane,” everyone will tighten their belt or maybe just give up a house or two, but nobody gets to have it all. You simply can’t believe, you might have to give up your custom decorated 10,000-square-foot apartment in Tribeca, and will pay any amount of money to avoid this travesty of justice. Your righteous indignation is blood in the water and the sharks are circling. Have a low-calorie alcoholic beverage and save those attorney’s fees to put a down payment on a nice new penthouse on 5th Avenue.

Feelings of entitlement are costly and set us up to be disappointed in this life. You are both entitled to a life at the end of this mess but it will be a different life for you both. Maybe I am a cynic, (after all these years, who could blame me?) but there is no way to ensure your happiness other than to make sure no one else is responsible for it. Work hard, own your own destiny and be grateful for what you have, even if it is 50 percent less that you used to have; it is so much more than many others.

5. You surround yourself with “yes” men.

They might be your best friend from summer camp who you have known since you were 10, your parents, your sister, your brother, and all too often, your lawyer. Your “yes men” are the ones that support whatever you do no matter what. They nod in agreement whenever you call your ex a complete jerk, they agree you deserve to “get it all” for what the other party has done to you. They encourage you to fight for things you are not entitled to, they encourage you to use your children, hide your assets, fight for unreasonable positions and generally condone your bad behavior. They never see the other side, never hold you accountable for your actions, sometimes just because they love you unconditionally. Some of my dearest friends and family however, have been those who have held me accountable for my own piece of some fairly tragic “life detours” (people seem to really dislike the term mistake). Sometimes we need the people around us to tell us to get our shit together, to toughen up or lighten up. We say “no” to our children everyday because they need to know there are limits and expectations. No is not a bad thing. Be aware of those who agree with everything we do or say. Listen to those who show the real mirror to the not-so-pretty behavior. We all need to be reminded that this is not the end of the world, that no one is guaranteed a particular life unless we create it for ourselves and that who we are at the end of this crazy ride is what really matters.

6. You think too much about you.

There is nothing that makes people feel worse about themselves than being singularly focused on what is wrong with their day, their life, their kids, their job, their appearance. Perspective is the greatest gift we can allow ourselves to move toward being happy. I can focus today on my broken faucet, ice maker jamming up, piled up laundry, my daughters four cavities (no, that is not a typo, and yes, I brush her teeth). This which will now require us to fly back from vacation for the procedure because her Reactive Airway Disease makes sedation too risky now with her recent Bronchitis. In the alternative, I can focus on a friend who just lost her young husband with two young daughters and think about her. Today her pain is bigger than any pain I can imagine, her strength and courage fills my heart with awe that life is hard and people are so very resilient. These people and stories are a gift to remind us this too shall pass and there is more life to be lived. Look outside your pain and your struggles. Your house is not big enough or nice enough? You have a home. You have family that loves you but are driving you crazy? There is someone alone tonight. So try to focus on doing something that is not about you at all. Stop for a whole day and try not to complain about anything. Say out loud “someone has it worse, I should be grateful.” You will be better prepared for this little bump in the road we call divorce.

I know divorce sucks, it is not supposed to end like this no matter how it ends. Someday you will be through it, hopefully sooner rather than later. Don’t torture yourself or your spouse unnecessarily, you will make the lawyers rich, the judges annoyed and your children cranky. This divorce is a gift, a new life, different but better than ever, if you let it be. Get there as fast as you can, that clock is ticking.
