The Paris Vintage Shoe Store That’s a Resource for Top Designers

PARIS — Situated among orthopedic shoe stores, natural wine bars and bobo restaurants, La Petite Fripe sells vintage footwear to fashion designers and their Parisian muses.
The pocket-sized boutique, located in the 11th arrondissement’s trendier zone, exclusively sells unworn, dead stock vintage shoes. While only open since September, the store has quickly culled a fan base including girl-about-town Clara Cornet, model Louise Follain and actress Pauline Jacquard. It has also become a sourcing ground of inspiration for footwear designers at some of Paris’ leading fashion houses, with designers accounting for half the shop’s sales.
Founded by antique and vintage dealer Lhassan Oubakrim, La Petite Fripe’s shelves have recently housed an assortment of Eighties metallic mule pumps, dandy loafers and embroidered mukluk boots. Shoes are typically priced around 80 euros, with boots hitting the highest price point at about 280 euros.
Here, Oubakrim speaks with WWD on about his store.
WWD: What is your work experience prior to opening this boutique?
Lhassan Oubakrim: I have been a bargain hunter and an antique dealer for years. I love unexpected discoveries and the feeling of finding one amazing piece amongst a mountain of s–t. It is both my work and my passion.
I had another shop before. The first Petite Fripe was on

Salt Lake City Is Electing Its First Openly Gay Mayor. Here’s Why That’s A Big Deal.

Salt Lake City is poised to announce its first openly gay mayor next week, reflecting changing social tides in conservative Utah.

Jackie Biskupski (D), who nabbed 52 percent of votes in Tuesday’s election but can’t declare victory until incumbent Mayor Ralph Becker (D) concedes, served as the first openly gay legislator in the Utah state House from 1999 to 2011. She will make history again as the first openly gay mayor of the state capital city, joining only a few openly gay mayors in the U.S.

Biskupski’s apparent victory in the home state of the Mormon church and its long-held opposition to gay rights reflects a shift toward wider LGBT acceptance, experts said.

Pamela Perlich, director of demographic research at the University of Utah’s Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute, explained that being openly gay is less controversial in Utah than it used to be, especially since a federal judge in 2013 made Utah the first state to rule against a gay marriage ban after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned part of the federal Defense of Marriage Act. More people being open about their sexual orientation fosters more inclusion, Perlich told HuffPost.

“It’s easy to exclude somebody you don’t know or establish stereotypes about someone you’re not in proximity with, but not once people found out, ‘My friend is gay or my daughter or my son,'” Perlich said. “That whole thing we see playing out all across nation — that’s playing out in Utah too … You reach these tipping points where it’s just not a big deal anymore.”

The leader of Equality Utah, an LGBT rights group, said he hopes Biskupski’s election galvanizes more people from the gay community to seek public office.

“It is extremely significant to have a lesbian mayor in Salt Lake City,” Troy Williams, Equality Utah executive director, told HuffPost. ”The election of Ms. Biskupski sends a clear signal to Utahans that the LGBT community is ready to give back with public service.”

Biskupski’s sexual orientation was largely a non-issue in the mayor’s race. A UtahPolicy poll found last month that three-fourths of likely Salt Lake City mayoral voters said the fact that she would be the city’s first gay mayor would have no bearing on their vote. If anything, being gay gave Biskupski a slight edge: 12 percent polled said Biskupski’s sexual orientation made them more likely to vote for her, while only 10 percent said the opposite.

Biskupski is already planning to make LGBT rights a priority, she told The Salt Lake Tribune on Tuesday. One of her first orders of business will be to meet with the leaders of the Mormon church and discuss its recent policy categorizing same-sex couples as apostates, or religious dissenters, and excluding their children from Mormon rites, such as blessings.

“Hopefully, we’ll have a chance to rethink this a bit and move in a different direction somewhere down the road,” Biskupski told the Tribune.

Ellen Koester, a volunteer at Affirmation, a Utah-based group supporting LGBT Mormons, said the voted for Biskupski and has been amazed by residents’ growing acceptance of gay rights in the last decade.

“I think it says everything about Utah’s changing attitudes,” Koester said. ”The citizens of Salt Lake City have realized that Jackie is an excellent candidate for mayor, regardless of her sexuality.”

It’s especially exciting to her that Salt Lake City would vote Biskupski into office just days after the World Congress of Families, deemed an anti-gay hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, held its conference in the city.

“If that doesn’t say anything about the changing attitudes of Utahns, then I don’t know what will,” Koester said.

This article has been updated to include Koester’s comments.

The French Girl Beauty Secret That’s Worth Trying This Season

micellar water

French women are globally recognized for the je ne sais quoi of their “I woke up like this” tousled hair and flawless skin. But when it comes to those glowing complexions, anyone who has visited a Paris pharmacy can tell you their secret: micellar water, the cult beauty product that hydrates, cleanses, and gently removes makeup without overdrying, which has been a Gallic go-to for decades.

“It’s the modern soap,” explains New York City facialist (and Paris export) Isabelle Bellis, who regularly uses it in her bespoke treatments. Acting like a multitasking solution, most formulas don’t require additional rinsing with water, which can further strip sensitive skin in the colder months. Bellis, however, uses it almost like a toner, swiping a soaked cotton ball over the skin after cleansing, then following it with a gentle mist of thermal water, which contains more nourishing minerals and fewer chemicals than what comes from the tap.

The beloved product, which has become increasingly available stateside in recent years, has been spotted in the kits of backstage makeup artists and the bathrooms of models worldwide, with Bioderma’s Sensibio H20 and Orlane’s brightening, antioxidant-rich formula topping the must-have list. But micellar water’s magic properties don’t stop there. Paris-based makeup artist Violette also relies on it to master a sleek cat-eye. “To perfect the line, I use it on a Q-tip and clean up the edges,” she says. “No need to rinse—it’s superfast and efficient.” Enough said. Here are the nine formulas worth considering for your own medicine cabinet.

The Summer Camp Trend That’s Making a Chic Comeback

vogue editors monogram pajamas

We all know the evergreen packing list essentials (remember, extra underwear and socks are never a bad idea), but curating a weekend getaway wardrobe that is both easy and elevated can prove a bit trickier. This summer, the nostalgia for traditional summer camp style (a place where, in my experience, you were no one without a custom camp sweatshirt emblazoned with your cabin number—bonus points if it was embroidered with your name, too) served as the genesis for monogram mania around the Vogue offices this season.

“Packing for a beach vacation is also the perfect time to experiment with whimsical accessories and bespoke additions,” says Vogue.com Accessories Editor Brooke Ely Danielson. “Think sunglasses in punchy colors, classics like simple white tennis shoes, smartphone cases, all of which are elevated by playful personal touches that feel modern—whether you emboss them with your Twitter handle or decorate them with your favorite emojis.”

Personalized touches are also a nice way to chic-ify otherwise cute, but often predictable, sleepwear staples, such as pajamas and sleep eye masks. And if sporting your own monogram from sunrise until sunset isn’t enough, well then you could always turn your hand to the picnic table: customizable Coca-Cola bottles, personalized aprons, cookies . . . a feast for the eyes all around.

Tiny Hamster’s Fourth Of July BBQ Is All That’s Right With America

Any rodent who can win the Internet like Tiny Hamster just had to be a patriot.

So it’s no surprise that our fluffy friend can host a kick-ass Fourth of July barbecue: first a little lounging in the pool, then chowing down with wee pals at a stars-and-stripes-decorated table.

Among several popular vids, the Tiny Hamster series has featured our titular critter eating tiny burritos and enjoying a teensy-weensy Thanksgiving feast. And now the pet has gone full red-white-and-blue.

God bless you, Tiny Hamster. God bless America.

You Know That Waxy Turquoise And Purple Cup That’s So ’90s? Meet Its Genius Designer

You may not know its name, but we know you’ve seen the classic squiggly design that’s most recognizable from paper cups.

Yeah, you know what we’re talking about — that purple and turquoise pattern that hits you with giant pangs of nostalgia. The “Jazz” design began showing up on paper cups about 23 years ago. Recently, an AMA request came in from a Reddit user who wanted to know who the designer was. That pushed reporter Thomas Gounley of Missouri’s Springfield News-Leader to do some digging.

cup
The iconic design.

After much investigation, Gounley was successful and last week he discovered that 50-year-old Gina Ekiss, who lives in Aurora, Mississippi, is the iconic design’s creator, according to his piece in the News-Leader. Ekiss, who’s now a custom frame shop manager at a Hobby Lobby, was met with Internet acclaim as the discovery spread across social media outlets.

“I’m just still pretty stunned about the whole deal,” Ekiss told ABC News in reaction to her Internet stardom. “I’m thrilled that it’s still popular.”

http://solojazz.tumblr.com/post/121874087614/meet-gina-the-designer-of-the-solo-jazz-cup

The path to finding Ekiss wasn’t an easy one. The reporter only knew the designer’s first name as well as the fact that she had worked for the Sweetheart Cup Company, which was later bought by Solo Cup Company. He eventually found a tweet from a person claiming to be the creator’s daughter, according to his article. After looking through public records and coming across Ekiss’ name and address, Gounley drove to her house and confirmed his suspicions.

Turns out, Ekiss had created Jazz as part of an internal cup design contest at the Sweetheart Cup Company in 1989, after outside design firms had came up with unsatisfying results. Ekiss said that Jazz was among three or four different designs she had submitted, and its colors are just ones she felt meshed well.

“I just did turquoise, or teal, because that’s one of my favorite colors,” she told ABC News. “I wanted another overlapping color that would work well together. I just liked the purple with it and everybody seemed pleased with that.”

The 50-year-old still keeps a few products with the Jazz design in her house, and says it’s “insane” that her artwork has become such a memorable part of ’90s culture.

Phew! We can all breathe easy now that this pressing mystery’s finally been solved.

Your Divorce Is the Best Thing That’s Ever Happened to You

I rarely meet anyone who regrets going through divorce. While to a divorced person they agree divorce is a miserable process that takes too long, hurts beyond description, and costs too much, the only thing they wish they could truly change was when it happened. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, those who have gotten divorced and lived to tell the tale wish it would have actually happened sooner.

Even those whose spouses made the decision for them emphatically share their divorce was one of the best things that happened to them. If you’re not quite there in your mind, I’m sure you’re wondering how that can possibly be. I assure you “a divorce is a blessing in disguise” is what I continually hear, and what I’ve heard over and over again. I even heard that very sentence before my own divorce was final!

What are Your Options?

When going through a divorce, you’ve got options:

  • You can be mad and stay mad. For years. Forever.
  • You can make sure the divorce take years and years, drags on and on, and cost lots of money.
  • You can be in denial. You were just relieved it was over, and other than that, “you’re good.”
  • You can punish your ex, and yourself, by exacting revenge and causing as much hurt as possible.
  • Or … you can change what you can change, accept what you cannot change, heal what needs healing, and have the courage to design the life you want.

The question on the table right now is: what are you going to do? Stay stuck, or let go and move on? The choice, indeed, is yours. All yours.

Turn Your Breakup Into Your Breakthrough

I’m going to make the assumption you want to use your divorce as the launch pad for your new life. Even if you’re still in the midst of it, you can start today making small and simple actions that will eventually result in the significant outcome and life you truly desire.

I truly hope you do!

One Thing That’s Holding You Back From Getting What You Want

Has the world distracted you from your unique, individual, potential and core self? Dr. Phil has a one-word answer that almost certainly lies at the heart of why you got off track in the first place and have continued there: fear. Fear of change is common currency among human beings. And not only are you fearful of changing, others have all sorts of fears about you changing. The ruts we get into, no matter how damaging or limiting, are at least familiar and predictable. Stepping up and out of those ruts is scary.

Ready to face the bogeyman and get him out into the light of day? Assume that you will have fear — and then take it apart. What fears have kept you from changing in the past? What kind of fear do you expect to feel when you change? Answer those two questions as they relate to these key words below. Be specific and as honest as you know how to be.

Family
God
Children
Spouse
Friends
Job

Then, ask yourself: What common themes do you see? Fear of losing? Not being loved or respected? Fear of failure or aging? The fears that you are bringing out into the open here do not have to continue to hold you back. Make a commitment right now of heart and soul to unleash your authentic self and to continue to become aware of all that you can be.

Sasha Luss Is Not Like Any Other Model on Instagram—And That’s a Good Thing

Sasha Luss

Most models are pretty straightforward with Instagram. They post a selfie, and you are graced with a hashtag that reads #selfie. If they drink a green juice, you may learn that it’s #spinach— or #kale. And if they are getting a facial, you would be able to understand that due to the caption that reads #facial. (Which is not even to mention the bevy of paid-for promotional Instagrams hawking products or new ad campaigns.) But then there is blue-eyed Moscow native Sasha Luss—a seriously in-demand face who walked 23 shows this season including almost all of the major houses, has graced campaigns from Chanel to Dior, and is also basically Socrates on social media.

For Luss, or @sashaluss, and her 150K followers, she gets personal, deep, and philosophical in her social media, in Russian as often as in English. A selfie is not a mere selfie, it’s paired with a Russian pop song or a poem. A regram of a street style shot is paired with a roughly translated quote about beauty and love by Françcoise Sagan. There have even been odes to furry friends: “The eyes of dogs are surprisingly humanlike. I love them, they are smart and kind, but people treat them with evil. Love your four-legged friends. They are the only friend that you can buy.” (Point taken! We think?)

In English, Luss’s captions can be even more abstract. There are pop song lyrics, by everyone from Hozier to Counting Crows, and quotes from popular films like The Devil Wears Prada: “Yes, because that’s really what this whole multibillion-dollar industry is all about, isn’t it? Inner beauty. . . .” But lest you think Luss has anything but love for her career, cast your eyes to hashtags like “#beautyiseverywhere #thisindustryseesbothsides #insideout #loveit.” Or the existential Jack London caption on a selfie taken in bed, “I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.”

And every once in a while, her musings aren’t so profound—smiling editorial snaps accompanied by “I have a big mouth. Easy to chew,” or her posing with a nervous-looking facial expression that is described as “When u actually realize that fw is about to start o____O.” After all, even Luss understands that sometimes a beautiful photo that speaks for itself needs little explaining—though we have to admit, we really do like it when she puts her own deep-thought spin on it.

Meet LuxePineapple: The “Un-Subscription” Beauty Box Service That’s Breaking All The Rules

The subscription box phenomenon has really changed the way men and women get their hands on new products to sample before they buy.

Beauty industry vet Liz Ranney and her team at Austin-based LuxePineapple, are blazing a new trail with their customer curated “un-subscription” box.

Enjoy my interview with Liz where we talk about how LuxePineapple differs from other beauty boxes, the future of beauty box subscription services and what’s next for the brand.

2015-03-12-1426189974-3250387-lpbox.jpg

Tell me about what motivated you to create LuxePineapple.

Liz Ranney: We’ve been in the beauty industry for our entire careers. Until the inception of LuxePineapple in 2013 we were on the professional side; LuxePineapple is our first direct-to-consumer venture. I started the planning process for LuxePineapple about 6 years ago when the economy took a downturn. Because working in the professional beauty arena requires a certain “look” I was seeking ways to keep my beauty needs met without sacrificing the brands I wanted, given my smaller budget. We have always maintained one simple goal: To source the best in skincare and cosmetics, and offer them at amazing prices with free shipping. LuxePineapple is here to remind women (and men-we have a few of those, too) to take a few minutes to celebrate themselves. We all deserve the small luxuries. We want every single package we ship to feel like a present when it arrives and to absolutely make someone’s day. Discount doesn’t need to look like discount when it arrives in the mail.

What makes LuxePineapple different from the typical box services currently available?

LR: We call ourselves the un-subscription box. LuxePineapple isn’t a subscription-based service, nor do we plan to ever become one. Our “Boxes of Joy” are released 3-4 times per month and, with the exception of the quarterly mystery boxes, we show the contents and full description of each “Box of Joy” as they are released. With our boxes each Lovely can pick and choose which products meet her needs, wants, personal style and beauty budget. Beauty is personal and we leave the choices completely up to the consumer.

Do you think LuxePineapple has influenced traditional beauty box subscription services to allow customers more choice when it comes to what is included in their boxes?

LR: I wouldn’t say we’ve influenced any of the traditional beauty box subscription services. What we have done is given consumers a totally different option to try products in a budget-friendly and fun way by involving them in the process. We are interactive in that we include our Pineapple Lovelies in conversations about beauty so that we know what they want.

What do you think is in the future of beauty box subscriptions? Do you believe they will remain as they are now or do you believe they will transition to look more like the LuxePineapple model?

LR: Every new trend has a rise and fall; there’s always a “next evolution”. Beauty subscription boxes seem to be taking a choice-oriented direction, which I think is great! Give people what they want.

Beauty consumers are inundated with choices and there are new companies hopping on the subscription box bandwagon daily. The successful subscription-based services have adapted to offer choices via personalized quizzes and some options to customize product selections.

What’s next for the LuxePineapple brand?

LR: Spring 2015 is major for us, as we have been in the planning phase of my “pet project” for almost a year and it will soon be ready for release. It’s something completely brand new to us. We have the collaborations with [a few] indie brands coming in the next several weeks. We at LuxePineapple have been incredibly blessed and are adding to our community of Pineapple Lovelies daily. We have contests and giveaways scheduled on our social media platforms. A newish addition is utilizing our social media to spread positive messages and give back to our local communities which we hope will motivate others to do the same.

Liz and her team are doing amazing things. LuxePineapple offers an exciting and fresh take on beauty boxes. Featuring some of the most popular brands in the industry, LuxePineapple attracts enthusiasts who enjoy customized beauty at a reasonable price. Ready to order a “Box of Joy”?! Visit LuxePineapple to get started.
