Duke Bootee, a name who OG Hip-Hop heads will recognize as one of the writer’s and rappers on Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five’s classic “The Message,” has passed away. He was 69.
Rolling Stone reports that Duke Bootee, born Edward Fletcher, died on Wednesday, January 13 at his home in Savannah, GA. According to his wife, Rosita, the cause of death was end-stage congestive heart failure.
Duke Bootee was a notable session player for Sugar Hill Records, the iconic Hip-Hop record label founded by the late Sylvia Robinson the recording home of acts like The Treacherous Three, the Sugar Hill Gang and Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five. While Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five gets credit for “The Message,” it featured rapping from member Melle Melle and Bootie, who handles the familiar, “Don’t push me ’cause I’m close to the edge, I’m trying not to lose my head. It’s like a jungle sometimes, It makes me wonder how I keep from going under.”
Says Rolling Stone:
Fletcher originally wrote the song in 1980, detailing the struggles of inner-city life amid a New York transit strike that year. Although “The Message” is credited to Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, the song — then titled “The Jungle” — was the brainchild of Fletcher, who submitted a demo of the track while a session musician for the Sugar Hill Gang. Grandmaster Flash and Co. were initially reluctant to record the song due to its lack of club appeal, but Sugar Hill Records label head Sylvia Robinson persuaded Furious Five member Melle Mel to write verses for the track. Soon after becoming a hit in 1982, the song would singlehandedly give mainstream hip-hop music a social and political consciousness.
George Clooney takes his biggest directorial swing yet with “The Midnight Sky,” and comes away with a decidedly mixed result. A beyond-bleak post-apocalyptic thriller, the sci-fi film reaches a reasonably satisfying finish, but follows an uneven orbit in getting there.
Season 4 of the Netflix show takes viewers into a new decade, with a musical soundtrack to match, including artists like Stevie Nicks, Elton John and David Bowie. NYT > Rock Music Join Group Chat!
“The Flight Attendant” feels like the TV equivalent of summer beach reading, in mostly good ways. Kaley Cuoco stars as the globetrotting party gal of the title, who has the unfortunate experience of waking up next to a dead guy. What happens thereafter plays like a Hitchock-ian thriller, punctuated by the comedy of a protagonist who greets each new development by nearly hyperventilating.
Americans may have earned independence from the Brits in 1776, but some things we can’t let go of. “The Crown” appeals to our fascination with the British royal family.

Ask, and you shall receive. After putting it out in the universe that he wanted to appear on The Joe Rogan Experience, alleged Presidential candidate Kanye West is getting his wish.
In case you’re unaware, The Joe Rogan Experience is an immensely popular podcast which books a wide array of guests for the comedian/host/UFC to commentator to chat it up with. Also, it’s where Elon Musk was seen smoking weed in the studio.
On Saturday (Oct. 17), Yeezy took to Twitter to reveal he’ll be sitting down with Rogan next week on Friday. “Joe Rogan said it’s cool for me to design the set for our podcast this Friday,” tweeted West along with a photo of what looks like him and Rogan on a Facetime call.

“The West Wing” enlisted a lot of big names to augment its reunion special on behalf of When We All Vote, but nothing really matched the kick of seeing the old band back together again, as Bradley Whitford put it during the introduction.
If “The War With Grandpa” sounds like the argument that you’re dreading over Thanksgiving dinner, happily, it’s not. Instead, this slightly naughty family comedy gets a mild lift from its casting, starting with Robert De Niro as the aforementioned grandpa, who has the audacity to move into his 12-year-old grandson’s room.
Reassembling the cast and director of the Tony Award-winning 2018 revival, “The Boys in the Band” becomes a Netflix movie that can’t entirely shake its slightly claustrophobic stage roots, but which provides a stellar showcase for its actors, especially Jim Parsons as the central provocateur.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has a favorite in the Presidential race. The famed actor and WWE legend has endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris for President and Vice President of the United States.
Johnson, whose Daddy (OG wrestler Rocky “Soulman” Johnson who passed earlier this year) we must point out was a Black man, has never endorsed a presidential candidate before. As a registered independent with “centrist ideologies” as he puts it himself, Johnson went a step further and actually had a conversation with Biden and Harris.
Citing his father’s teaching that respect is earned, the Rock’s first question to Biden and Harris was how they intended to earn the respect of the American people.
“By doing what we say we’re going to do,” responded Biden. “By keeping our word. By leveling with the American people. By taking responsibility. When we fail acknowledge it. We’re not going to be perfect, but take responsibility. Say this is what I’m going to do, this is what I believe, and tell the truth.”
Added Harris, “It’s about trust, right. And as we know, the nature of trust is that […] it’s a reciprocal relationship. You give and you receive trust. And one of the foundations of trust is truth. You must speak truth but here’s the reality—truth can sometimes be really difficult to hear.”
Johnson closed by stressing that truth is what leads to progress. He then said, “The most powerful way for us to make progress, to me, is through humanity, is through decency.”
We can dig it. Watch the interview below.
As a political independent & centrist, I’ve voted for both parties in the past. In this critical presidential election, I’m endorsing @JoeBiden & @KamalaHarris.
“The West Wing” cast will reunite before the election for an HBO Max special, benefiting the voter-participation group When We All Vote. Shinola is making lemonade out of lemons.
The Detroit-based brand with the Made in the U.S. ethos has rejiggered the messaging around its latest timepiece, pivoting from its planned launch for the now-canceled Olympic Games to instead support health-care workers fighting the coronavirus.
Shinola had originally planned to introduce “The Champ,” a Detrola watch, at the Olympic’s Opening Ceremony in Tokyo next month. Now The Champ will be launched to honor “the real champs,” the company said — the health-care workers in its hometown of Detroit.
The watch is available for pre-purchase beginning today and is expected to be delivered in late July, pending the reopening of the Shinola factory. It retails for $ 395 and is limited to 500 units.

The Champ features a multicolored matte dial in a striped pattern of red, gold, bright blue, bright green and black along with the Shinola Detroit and Detrola collection logos. The unisex watch also has a black silicone strap.

Watching Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani riff off each other is intermittently fun, but that’s all there is to recommend “The Lovebirds,” a dark, somewhat chaotic romantic comedy. As “The Lion King” counts up receipts from a big opening weekend while still licking its wounds from negative reviews, you can almost hear the familiar murmurs — that critics are “out of step” with the audiences they profess to serve.
Actress Sonja Sohn aka Detective Kima Greggs from HBO’s The Wire and more recently Showtime’s The Chi was arrested for cocaine possession, amongst other drugs. She got pinched on Sunday morning (July 21) at around 2am in North Carolina.
According to TMZ, Sohn was arrested for cocaine possession, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The booger sugar charge is a felony while the rest are misdemeanors.
Details are scarce beyond her arrest at 2 am, and she bailed out 6 minutes later. She posted her $ 1500 bail and is due back in court for her arraignment on Tuesday (July 23).
Life comes at you fast. Sohn left The Chi after its first season.
The new “The Lion King” hews closely to the original, standing apart with its visual realism, using computer animation to approximate the look of a nature documentary. Yet amid a golden age of that genre, as the Disney blockbuster heads toward a big opening weekend, it also reminds us how talking and otherwise anthropomorphic animals tend to be more commercially popular than the real things.
“The Farewell” will inevitably inspire references to “Crazy Rich Asians,” featuring a predominantly Asian cast, a wedding, lots of big mouth-watering meals and Awkwafina. The similarities, however, pretty much end there, in a small, melancholy movie that explores cultural differences and dealing with death in an utterly charming, understated manner.
Anticipating a bountiful box-office feast, “The Lion King” deviates sparingly from the beloved 1994 original, for better and worse. The result is a polished and satisfying film, yet one that conspicuously feels even more like a consumer product than most Disney revivals of its animated classics.
“The Lion King” won’t hit theaters for more than a week, but Beyoncé and Disney celebrated the world premiere screening on Tuesday night by releasing a new song from the film that’s sure to lift your spirits.
Anwan Glover, better known to many as Slim Charles from The Wire, has been arrested on firearms charges. The actor and go-go band member (BackYard Band) is claiming bullsh*t, though.
According to TMZ, Glover got popped riding dirty in Washington, DC and has been sitting in jail for over a week.
The veteran TV and movie actor was arrested in Washington D.C. on June 26 and booked for unlawful possession of a firearm — a misdemeanor — after cops say they searched his car during a traffic stop and discovered an unregistered handgun in Glover’s Jeep.
According to docs, obtained by TMZ, police were notified to be on the lookout for a white Jeep with a driver who was allegedly brandishing a gun out the window. Cops say they pulled over Glover because his ride matched the description and was making multiple lane changes without signaling.
Officers say they asked Glover if he had any weapons, and he said no. He also said no when they asked if they could search the vehicle but cops did it anyway, claiming probable cause.
The officers say they found a loaded Smith & Wesson MP Shield 9mm tucked between the Jeep’s roll bar and roof cover, and then immediately placed Anwan under arrest.
His lawyers filed a motion to have him released on bail ASAP so he could continue working and supporting his family. They say he denied any knowledge of the gun in the vehicle, and also argued cops had no business targeting him in the first place.
Glover’s lawyers are claiming the vehicles didn’t match up. But nevertheless, a hearing is scheduled for Monday.

Dropping off visuals for “Forever Ball” and “The Life,” Spitta and Wiz do what they love and steam on a few L’s while dropping enough bars to satisfy their fans hunger for more.
Mya meanwhile heads to the Middle East to take in some sun on the sands with her boo in her new clip to “With You.”
Check out the rest of today’s drops and some joints you might’ve missed over the weekend including work from XXXTentacion, DJ Kay Slay featuring Melly Mel, Raekwon, CeeLo Green and Grandmaster Caz, and more.

While the Super Bowl turned out to be a total dud and the halftime show was probably the most forgettable in history (didn’t even get that rumored SNKRS shock drop at the end of it), the commercials weren’t half-bad. Jordan Peele certainly used his spot to build anticipation for the reboot of the cult classic series, The Twilight Zone.
Serving as both a producer and host for The Twilight Zone, the brains behind the cult classic Get Out and Us certainly seems like the man to bring back the classic sci-fi television series. They even cleverly tied the commercial into the Super Bowl with a football stadium setting.
Check out the teaser to The Twilight Zone below and let us know if you’ll be checking for it on CBS All Access on April 1.
With Drake having fallen back for the past few months and seems to be taking a breather from his feud with Pusha Tea, it’s the perfect time for someone to step up and rep the country to the north. Tory Lanez has been doing just that.
Today the artist out of Ontario drops his visual to “The Run Off” makes it rain in the middle of nowhere where he’s only source of light is a car that’s on fire. Strippers must be watching this with a screw face like a MF.
Shy Glizzy meanwhile seems to be a fan of the 2nd amendment as he hits up a shooting range where the bullets stack up for his clip to “30s 50s 100s.”
Check out the rest of today’s drops including work from Lil Mosey featuring BlocBoy JB, Brianna Perry, and more.
What would it be like to have your little brother turn into Justin Bieber? That’s the basic premise for “The Other Two,” a very funny series from former “Saturday Night Live” writers that provides a pretty good window on the indignities, in today’s day and age, of living adjacent to fame.
While Papoose and Remy Ma have been the embodiment of Black love for quite some time for some reason we haven’t gotten many collaborations between the two rappers. But today that changes thanks to the birth of their newborn baby.
The happily married rapping couple finally release a duet clip for “The Golden Child” which features footage of their baby shower where we peep fellow Love & Hip Hop alumni Joe Budden, Cyn Santana, and Safaree Samuels helped them celebrate the expansion of their family.
City Girls meanwhile head down to South Beach where they link up with Cardi B and throw a booty shaking contest so intense it could’ve caused a tsunami had they all done it in the water for the visual to “Twerk.”

After his experience with the Oscars, Kevin Hart could probably use a picker-upper right about now. He likely has a marginal one with “The Upside,” a crowd-pleasing remake of a popular 2011 French film, “Les Intouchables,” that skates by, barely, on the chemistry between Hart and Bryan Cranston.
[[tmz:video id=”0_lkid8j0p”]] With rumors swirling that AC Milan has interest in bringing 37-year-old Zlatan Ibrahimovic back to Italy … we had to ask the L.A. Galaxy star straight-up — true or false? Good news — we got an…

Aside from the artists on TDE like Jay Rock, YG’s been one of LA’s most visible artists in 2018 and looking to close out the year on a high note the young blood from the streets of Compton links up with an ATLien to show how sweet the afterlife is for a real one.
Teaming up with Quavo for the visuals to “Slay,” YG finds himself at the pearly gates where the angels are all half-naked young women who seem to have a soft spot for G’s and B’s. Why YG wearing gloves in heaven though? Can’t leave finger prints on clouds or feathered angel wings, B.
Back on earth Hip-Hop triple-OG Ice Cube takes everyone on a neon trip and uses mirror effects and optical illusions to dazzle the eye while entertaining the ear in his clip to “The New Funkadelic.”

Seems like the grown up thing to do for OG rappers is to own up to their past mistakes and after watching Jay-Z step up to the plate with “4:44,” T.I. seems to be ready to admit to his own f*ck ups.
In the Victoria Monét assisted visuals to “The Amazing Mr. F**k Up,” Tip finds himself explaining to his homies how his own selfishness led to his woman walking out the door and into the arms of another man.
Speaking of repenting, Kodak Black seems to be trying to make amends for his past as he finds himself in a church dipped in all white like a televangelist in his clip to “Testimony.”

“The Voice” artists SandyRedd and Tyke James sit with Access and share their reaction to being eliminated from Season 15 of the singing competition. How are they processing the news, and what’s next for them? Plus, what did coach Adam Levine think about Tyke leaving the show, and what was it like for SandyRedd to connect with Jennifer Hudson on their tragic personal losses?
“How the Grinch Stole Christmas” remains arguably the best of TV’s animated Christmas specials. Yet the Chuck Jones/Dr. Seuss holiday classic is a model of storytelling economy, whereas the new version, “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch,” captures sparks of that magic while straining to treble its size — like the Grinch’s small heart, only here for theatrical purposes.
“The Front Runner” captures what turned out to be pivotal moment in politics and media, zeroing in on the moment when the look-the-other-way mentality about candidates’ personal indiscretions forever changed. At its core, too, is how that shift torpedoed the 1988 presidential run by Gary Hart, played with convincing indignation by Hugh Jackman.
Keira Knightley, who is currently playing the Sugar Plum Fairy in Disney’s ‘The Nutcracker and the Four Realms’ talks ballet and looking like a cake. Rough Cut – no reporter narration.
