Valerie Jarrett Doesn’t Think America Would Embrace An Anti-Gay President

Senior White House Advisor Valerie Jarrett has a message for the GOP presidential candidates — namely, Rand Paul, Ben Carson, Mike Huckabee and Ted Cruz — who’ve been running on an anti-gay agenda.

“It might be interesting in the 24-hour news cycle,” she told me in a recent interview on SiriusXM Progress. “But ultimately… the American people don’t embrace that kind of opinion.”

Jarrett, who spoke with me about a groundbreaking federal report that calls for ending “conversion therapy” programs for minors who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, responded to Rand Paul’s assertion in Iowa several days earlier that LGBT people don’t need to be protected by law against discrimination in employment. Paul, in backing up his claim, said, “If you are gay, there are plenty of places that will hire you,” explaining that “the things you do in your house, just leave those in your house and they wouldn’t have to be a part of the workplace.”

“Well, this is what I would say to you on that subject,” Jarrett said. “President Obama was elected not once, but twice based on his vision of America, which is one that unifies us, one that is inclusive, that says we should embrace all of our citizens, that we are a nation of immigrants, and that diversity is a strength. And that’s what the majority of the American people voted for, not once, but twice.”

Jarrett also discussed a report that was released this week by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, which looked at statements from across the spectrum of child adolescent and development experts regarding both gender identity and sexual orientation. The White House had previously called for banning “conversion therapy” for minors, something three states (California, Oregon and New Jersey) have already done.

“The report concluded firmly that conversion therapy — and the goal of conversion therapy is to change someone’s sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression — and it concludes that it’s not appropriate for mental health providers to engage in, and so this is a really important report,” Jarrett said. “What we should be doing is celebrating our young people, allowing them to be who they are, loving them for who they are, and not trying to change their identity.”

Jarrett talked about the immense progress the Obama administration has made on LGBT equality, sharing a story about the successful push to repeal ”Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” which illustrates the great strides.

“I went to the Defense Department on the first anniversary of [the repeal],” she recounted. “And I sat there in the Pentagon with people in uniform who had to [previously] sneak into my office at the White House to talk about how important it would be to repeal it and who were saying, ‘You know, here we are in the military. We’re making this pledge and this oath and we’re having to lie about who we are.’ And so, for me to see them, sitting there in their uniforms, embraced by the Secretary of Defense — it just shows you how much progress we have made.”

In a lighter moment, Jarrett also weighed in on the plot line of ”The Good Wife,” the CBS drama on which she made an appearance as herself last season, urging Alicia Florrick (Julianna Margulies) to run for state’s attorney in Illinois. She said she decided do the show because she believes more women need to enter politics and it was an opportunity to put that message forth.

Asked if she believes Florrick’s husband, Gov. Peter Florrick (Chris Noth), should be chosen by Hillary Clinton as a vice presidential running mate should she win the Democratic nomination — something for which the character is positioning himself, as the 2016 presidential race is part of the storyline this season  – Jarrett answered with a definitive no.

“I think she should think about Alicia,” she advised. “I would go back to the candidate that I brought to the party, and I’d say hands down I’d pick Alicia over Peter, any day. But if not, then maybe next year Alicia will actually run for president.”

Why The Language You Use Is More Powerful Than You Think

An all-new season of Dr. Phil premieres September 14!  Watch a preview here.

“I think the power of language is amazingly strong,” says Dr. Phil, explaining that the words we use — even if only to ourselves — can impact our reality.

Watch the video above as Dr. Phil explains to Leslie, who went through a bitter divorce with her ex-husband of 22 years, how her dramatic choice of words about their circumstances may be fueling her anger even more.

“You’re 100 percent right. This is self-defeating behavior,” admits Leslie.

So how will she make peace when she believes her ex has cheated her out of money? Dr. Phil tells her, “You’ve got to stop being a victim; you’ve got to start being a victor. You’ve got to get back in the game.”

Offering to assist her with professional resources, Dr. Phil says, “I can’t tell you that I can change your past. Not even God can change what has happened … The best revenge is living well … You need to star in your own life.”

Miss America Kira Kazantsev: ‘It’s Not As Glamorous As People Think’

A new Miss America will be crowned on Sunday, which means audiences can look forward to seeing some stunning ballgowns, fun celebrity judges and a whole host of various talents.

But before the 2016 winner takes her crown, The Huffington Post sat down with Kira Kazantsev, the current Miss America, to get a behind-the-scenes look at what life is really like as the country’s most beloved beauty queen.

Kazantsev dished on what it’s like to travel 20,000 miles every month for a year, and how she juggles so many appearances while keeping things real, fun and stylish. And yes, we did ask about a “Miss Congeniality” reference that Kazantsev totally confirmed. Scroll down to read excerpts from the conversation, which have been condensed and edited for clarity.

HuffPost: What is a typical day like for you:

Kira Kazantsev: I travel 20,000 miles a month and I’m in a different city every two days. Usually I wake up, depending on the call time, about two hours before. I do my own hair, I do my own makeup. You know, it could be event one of five that day and I have to maintain [my look]. It’s a lot — it’s not as glamorous as people think.

HP: Who provides your clothing?

KK: My clothes are provided to me by Joseph Ribkoff which is really nice. They travel very well. But other than that I’m on my own.

HP: For the Miss America pageant, do they give you a glam squad?

KK: Pretty much the girls do their own hair and makeup, but they do have people there to help you, touch you up, whatever it might be. They won’t leave you high and dry — there will be somebody to help you out!

HP: Do the girls help each other backstage at all?

KK: Yeah! Absolutely. There’s so much going on — it’s 52 people squeezed into a pretty tight space. So there’s constant [chatter, such as], “Is your curling iron on, can I use that for a second? I can’t find my hairspray, can I borrow yours?”

HP: Do you really use butt spray?

KK: We do use butt glue! It does help for piece of mind. Nobody wants to see that when you’re walking across the stage. Just cement that down and you’ll be good to go!

HP: Who makes your dresses for pageants?

KK: My mom and a seamstress made my competition wardrobe both years for Miss New York. We went to Mood, got fabric for like 40 bucks, got rhinestones on eBay, and they concocted this thing, this amazing dress that I ended up winning Miss New York in.

I’ve always prided myself on being very frugal about it and showing that you don’t have to spend thousands and thousands of dollars. I’ve never spent more than $ 500 on a dress.

HP: How do you travel with your crown?

KK: My carry-on always has my crown, because if the luggage gets lost than you’re kind of SOL.

I also always have my makeup and an outfit, so for whatever reason if I get stranded and my luggage doesn’t make it, I have the essentials — my “Miss America kit.”

HP: What’s the most surprising item people might find in your closet?

KK: I don’t have a closet! That’s the thing I’m looking forward to most [when the year is over]. Just having hangers!

You can catch Kazantsev handoff her crown at the 2016 Miss America competition on Sunday, September 13 at 9 pm on ABC.

And as a bonus, check out Kazantsev performing “Cups” at HuffPost’s office. Kazantsev performed a similar red cup routine for her talent last year, when she won her title.

The Most Romantic Labor Day Escape Is Closer Than You Think

date night museum

Sure, it’s Labor Day weekend—the last stretch of summer before the AC-blasted return to the sterile cubicle. You’re probably feeling tempted to skip town with the beau and enjoy a hair-tossing adventure in the Hamptons or a last-minute frolic on the Burning Man playa. Hell, you may even book a long weekend to Ibiza and call it a year. But the idea of those FOMO-fueled, Instagram-inspired jaunts can be exhausting. What’s so attractive about capping the hot weather season off with jet lag and a suitcase full of dirty laundry? Consider this: Maybe your escape is much closer than you think. Maybe it doesn’t require a suitcase, a time change, traffic, or the TSA pat-down. Maybe it’s a museum! The romantic nature of the exhibit-trawling outing is not to be underestimated—there’s an intimacy to wandering huge, beautiful spaces together, your voices hushed in respectful tones. You’re exploring, you’re learning something new, and also, it may be worth noting, you’re in the AC.

Need some inspiration? At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the record-breaking “China: Through the Looking Glass” exhibition is extended until September 7, along with late-night hours tonight and tomorrow. A wealth of fashion (ranging from the traditional Manchu robe to contemporary Chinese-inspired designs by Tom Ford and John Galliano) combines with a deep visual history, including Ming furniture and ancient perfume bottles for something that exists nowhere else. So why not take advantage before it ends?

As for the night at the museum attire? Half the fun’s in dressing up. Take inspiration from the guests of this year’s Met Gala and elevate your wing-hopping look. Maybe it is something à la Beyonce with a polka-dot, curve-skimming frock. Or maybe take some editorial cues from a Mario Testino–lensed Joan Smalls and opt for a white pantsuit. And when in doubt? Keep it classic with a polished jacket and skirt set—plus a pop of color derived from an accessory. After all, plane tickets come and go—but this exhibition is once in a lifetime. Dress accordingly.

So You Think You Can Moonwalk? The Best Showstopping Shoes to Glide Into Fall

moonwalking in fall shoes

Boom! Hiss! Boom! Hiss! When the unmistakable snare and hi-hat of Michael Jackson’s 1983 hit “Billie Jean” reverberates into any room, any setting, at any time, you’re propelled to your feet. The thumping bassline guides you to the nearest dance floor, or as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater dancer Ghrai DeVore shows here in Vogue’s birthday salute to the late, great King of Pop, inspires you to transform any smooth surface into your own makeshift stage.

Taking to the streets of New York City, DeVore moonwalked across the metropolis on the soles of Fall 2015’s showstopping and traffic-topping footwear. Miu Miu’s pointy-toe slingbacks sent the 25-year-old dancer gliding across street corners, never missing a beat; Grenson’s loafers—dead ringers for the pair MJ donned to introduce the gravity-defying dance move to the world at Motown’s 25th Anniversary celebration in 1983—had her slithering through bodega aisles. Climbing the countless steps of Federal Hall in her studded Laurence Dacade brogues, DeVore gave New Yorkers a show they weren’t expecting.

The nimble-footed Brooklyn resident, who is off to South Africa for a two-week tour with the Alvin Ailey company, even attempted to show this fashion writer how to master the backslide, but alas that particular move is probably better left to the professional, who has been dancing since she was four years old. Citing the iconic red leather “Thriller” jacket as her favorite MJ fashion moment, DeVore acknowledged, “I don’t think anyone has made as many strides towards sociopolitical, fashion, and music [issues] . . . or touched as many people as Michael Jackson did. We can only thank him for that.”

Most Americans Don’t Think Divorce Is A Sin

(RNS) In a summer of celebrity splits — Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, Miss Piggy and Kermit — a question comes up for many Christians.

Is it a sin — cohabitating Muppets aside — to break up a marriage?

If you’ve got a good reason for divorce — adultery, abuse, addiction or abandonment — fewer than 1 in 4 Americans would call that a sin, a new LifeWay Research survey finds.

The survey of 1,000 U.S. adults finds only a minority would call divorce a sin even when:

  • There’s adultery (39 percent).
  • The two people no longer love each other (38 percent).
  • One spouse has abandoned the other (38 percent).
  • One spouse is abusing the other (37 percent).
  • A spouse is addicted to pornography (35 percent).

However, 37 percent say divorce is not a sin in any of those circumstances.

People who identify as Christians were slightly more likely to see sin in those divorcing over abuse (43 percent) or abandonment (43 percent) or pornography addiction (39 percent).

And more than 4 in 10 Protestants (43 percent) think it’s sinful for couples to split over a lack of love, according to the survey, which has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

“Hopefully, they are basing their view of what is sin by what the Bible says,” said Scott McConnell, vice president of LifeWay Research.

“Clearly in Scripture, God indicates that he doesn’t like divorce. But Jesus did have things to say about this.”

In Matthew 19:6, Jesus tells the Pharisees: “What God has joined together, man must not separate.” However, Jesus adds an exception in verse 8 — “sexual immorality.”

A second survey, of 1,000 Protestant pastors, found that 61 percent saw sin in couples giving up a loveless marriage.

The surveys of all Americans and of pastors were conducted in September 2014, when celebs Lambert and Shelton, Garner and Affleck and the Muppet couple, about to star in a new TV show, were all presumably still together.

Last week, Miss Piggy squealed about her breakup on Facebook in a perfect parody of celebrity split announcements:

“After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, Kermit the Frog and moi have made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship. Our personal lives are now distinct and separate, and we will be seeing other people, pigs, frogs, et al. This is our only comment on this private matter … unless we get the right offer.”

It would appear they no longer love each other. No sin in that, many would say.

If You Think Politicians Are Childish, This Is the GOP Debate For You

Sick of immature, quarrelsome politicians?

Then this is the debate re-enactment for you. Not because it improves upon the Republican candidates, but because it pulls back the curtain on their true nature.

It’s a surprisingly accurate rundown of this year’s first GOP presidential debate — from Donald Trump’s refusal to rule out a third-party run; to Rand Paul’s defense of the Fourth Amendment; to Mike Huckabee’s belief that, in certain corners of the nonprofit world, babies’ organs are sold like parts of a Buick.

Plenty of other highlights also made the cut. And the only real adults look to be the moderators.

Capone-N-Noreaga know what real beef is, but like the rest of the Internets they find Meek Mill vs. Drake to be very entertaining.

“They’re making Hip-Hop interesting,” N.O.R.E. tells Hip-Hop Wired. “As long as it doesn’t turn physical, it doesn’t turn into guns, it doesn’t turn into anybody that can be harmed—I think it’s healthy for the game.”

Think They’re Still Together? TV Sitcom Couples Edition

2015-07-14-1436835060-2431752-end812226_1280.jpg

Did you watch so much TV as a kid that sometimes you can’t remember which are your own memories and which belong to Greg Brady? No? Just me? Fair enough. After decades of inviting TV families into my living room, I’m really invested in their everlasting happiness. Sure they’re fictional, but their stories won’t have to end after a series finale. Not when you play my favorite game: hey, think they’re still together?

After facilitating the demise of unhappy marriages for over a decade, we at the firm have developed an eye for spotting which couples are solid and which are likely to end up in our office. Call it a blessing or call it a curse, just please don’t call to invite us to your next party only to make predictions about your neighbors. This game can get ugly when played in real life so let’s just stick to the tube, shall we?

The Nanny – Fran and Max
Still together? NO

When last we saw the Sheffields, they were moving to California with their newborn twins and Grace. Were they destined for that Bower-Micelli brand of marital bliss? They sure started out in a similar setup, but no. Things were fine in California for a while, but then Max’s sitcom got canceled. The economy tanked and Max struggled to make a mark on the LA theatre scene. Deep down, Fran still held a grudge over that first time Max said he loved her then took it back and would bring it up during fights over money. Then tragedy struck — Loehmann’s closed. Fran fell into a catatonic state, the house got foreclosed on and Max split back to England leaving Grace to care for Fran and the twins. Every so often you can catch Grace wheeling Fran around a Nordstrom Rack in the Valley and if you listen carefully you can here Fran muttering “It’s not the same…” over and over.

Who’s the Boss – Tony and Angela
Still together? YES

We never got to see Angela and Tony get married, but I think we can all agree they did. Angela was a modern woman, leaning in from day one, and perhaps would have been happier with a long lasting partnership never officially recognized by the government. But Tony was a different story. His strong Italian Catholic roots likely had him insisting on marriage. Angela probably made some wry quip about how they’d been living in sin for eight years so what’s the difference? Tony probably called her Ang and explained how much it meant to him. Angela probably said oh, alright and they hugged while music swelled and the scene faded to black. I’m sure the wedding was at the house. Jonathan was best man. Sam was maid of honor. Mona officiated. It was beautiful! Oh yeah, I guess Billy was there too. But did they last? Yes. Their love developed over time. They started as friends first. They figured out how to live together and how to raise their kids together before romance ever entered the picture. They worked hard at balancing out a power struggle in a unique situation (A man! As a housekeeper! A man!!). So yes, the Bower-Micellis are most likely happily retired in Connecticut right now.

The Cosby Show – Sondra and Elvin
Still together? YES

We’ll just leave the Bill Cosby controversy over there on the other side of the room while we talk about the only Cosby Show relationship that really mattered: Sondra and Elvin. Mismatched from the start, right? How did they even get together? Sondra was driven, responsible and no nonsense. Then Elvin came into her life. You remember Elvin? The misogynist who talked Sondra into dropping out of law school to open a wilderness store because their camping honeymoon was so fun? Yeah, why not throw away everything you worked for on a whim? A wilderness whim! Later on they had twins and got their heads back on straight and both went back to school. But did they last? Yes. Why? Because they had busy careers, outsourced their childcare and never saw each other. It was easier to stay married than get divorced and they got to live their lives happily and separately.

Mad About You – Paul and Jamie
Still together? NO

In the finale set years in the future, the Buchmans were separated. Love’s rekindled at daughter Mabel’s film screening and we’re told they lived happily ever after. But did they? Paul left Jamie for being “unkind.” I don’t think you can ever truly come back from that, spark or no spark. That’s a shot right to the gut not a lot of people could move past. I’m sure they tried to make it work for a while but ultimately there too much pain and resentment there.

Family Matters – Harriette and Carl
Still together? NO

The odds were really stacked against the Winslows. Both had stressful careers, Carl an overworked Chicago police officer and Harriette, once an elevator operator, then head of security, then head of sales. They had a full house — three kids, a widowed sister, a nephew, a mother and later on an orphan named 3J. How could any marriage survive with that many people around? Then there was Urkel who was always barging in, practically destroying the house with his bungled inventions, and endlessly annoying everyone he, or his alter ego came in contact with. Urkel’s constant presence in the Winslow home could not have been healthy for the marriage. Taxing jobs, an overflowing house, and the world’s worst neighbor: a recipe for marriage disaster.

Boy Meets World – Cory and Topanga
Still together? YES

Do we even need to talk about this? Yes, they stayed together. Duh. Next!

Family Ties – Elyse and Steven
Still together? YES

What a kooky liberal pair. They made it through the Reagan eighties intact so they’d be able to make it through anything. And with Alex off on Wall Street, Mallory married off to Nick, Jennifer well on her way to Oberlin and Andy fading away into thin air as he was a figment of everyone’s imagination (a real child cannot age five years in the span of one season, clearly he was an apparition all along), Elyse and Steven had the time and space to recommit to each other. Boy did their love flourish in those Clinton years.

Saved By The Bell – Kelly and Zack
Still together? NO

What a fairytale! High school sweethearts turned college newlyweds! What could go wrong? Everything! Zack kept scheming his way through life, and while the entrepreneur lifestyle was fun for a while it ended in trademark infringement and a brush with securities fraud. While Zack avoided jail time, he did lose the house and both cars. Then to top it off, drunk one night, Zack confessed he had the ability to freeze time, a secret he’d been keeping for his whole life. Kelly was furious. They were supposed to be partners! They were supposed to tell each other everything! She packed up the kids and headed to the Midwest hoping to find a good wholesome man with a stable job, a strong work ethic, no magical powers and a reasonably sized cell phone.

The Office – Dawn and Tim
Still together? YES

Arguing which version of The Office is better is a debate for another day, but it’s pretty clear Dawn and Tim lived happily ever after. Another slow building relationship, Dawn and Tim were friends first. They bonded over miserable jobs and everyone knows misery brings people together more effectively than anything good can. Maybe they settled in Slough or maybe they made their way to a better city to live out their dreams. Who knows, but I’m sure wherever they went, they went together.

Now i’s your turn! Which TV sitcom was your favorite and do you think think they’re still together?

How Family Law Attorneys Tend to Think, Final Part

Since this is the final article in this series, I am finally going to share the answer I gave the attorney colleague of mine who asked me the following question: “Any thoughts on how to make money as a family lawyer when you’re not prepared to screw the other side?”

My response was as follows:

“You are most welcome and thank you for your email.

I don’t believe you understand the severity of the situation. A great many family law attorneys are clueless at best and deliberately destructive at worst. Some attorneys are a combination of the two.

They honestly don’t want to learn the type of information I am trying to hand feed them. In order to disregard me, they badmouth me to one another and refer to me as “polarizing,” “a self-promoter,” and even as “mentally ill.” Oh yes – let me share with you portions of an email someone sent to a colleague on the listserv about me after I wrote the comment to which you responded:

‘As to Baer’s contributions, however, I am beginning to think the Family Law Bar would benefit more if, instead of encouraging him to write more about his evil parents, we chipped in for him to start undergoing long-term treatment with one of our talented LA psychoanalysts/psychiatrists. There is great value to mental health treatment by appropriate providers. Baer sounds as if he has PTSD, in addition to having no shame. I don’t think presenting ourselves as victims throughout our lives is part of any solution. I don’t think it’s healthy for us. I don’t think it’s healthy for others either when we do that.’ This attorney also referred to what I am doing as ‘whining.’

I’m afraid that there is nothing you or I can do to help families and try and minimize the collateral damage, when a traditional family law attorney also gets involved in the case. I used to be naive enough to believe otherwise, but learned my lesson the hard way after YEARS of trying.

The only answer that I have found is to get the case BEFORE any of these attorneys gets involved and do everything possible to make sure that neither party brings them on-board. This is VERY difficult and requires reaching the couple BEFORE either of them has retained counsel.”

As luck would have it, this same attorney attended a program I gave on June 23, 2015 on “How to Resolve Conflict.” During the Question and Answer portion of the program, he asked me that same question.

I responded by telling him that I currently address the issue by attempting to have a joint consultation with both parties, wherein we only discuss the various processes available for handling family law matters in California and the strengths and weaknesses of each. We do not discuss any particulars of their situation at that consultation. I tell them that such a consultation is important because the biggest mistake soon-to-be ex-couples make is interviewing attorneys before understanding the various processes available. In so doing, they tend to consult with and retain traditional family law attorneys, who will give them their parents’ divorce, so to speak.

If you have read this entire series, you will understand exactly what I meant by that statement. In any event, it only takes one person to sink the family ship and the lowest common denominator determines the direction the case will take. As I have been saying for a very long time, outcomes are typically determined by the way in which the “game” is designed. I am trying to assist people in designing the “game” so as to maximize the potential for a constructive divorce.

As for the reasons behind my sharing personal information are concerned, I want to reiterate what I said in Part IV of this series, which is that I share such information in an effort to enlighten my colleagues and others and for no other reason. As an aside, it also happens to explain my path to conflict resolution and why I am so passionate about it. As an aside, I would hardly say that the Family Law Bar has encouraged me to write anything at all, let alone the types of articles I tend to write.

Meanwhile, after reading my articles and comments, the take-away that some of my family law colleagues have had is that I don’t like practicing family law and wondering why I don’t just leave the field. In other words, they apparently believe that you cannot practice family law unless you want to litigate in the manner in which I have called into question in so many of my articles and comments.

Please note that social and emotional skills such as empathy are essential to conflict resolution. Therefore, those best suited to work in conflict resolution should have high EQs (Emotional Intelligence). It has long been known that while lawyers tend to be analytical because the field requires it, they generally score poorly in terms of their EQ level. This isn’t a problem when their job is merely to assist in resolving disputes. However, problems ensue in situations in which interpersonal relationships are involved, including but not limited to disputes between family members, employer/employee, neighbors, and business partners. It doesn’t help that people frequently confuse “conflict resolution or management” with “dispute resolution.” People with low EQ levels can generally do one, but not the other.

I may not be playing by the traditional rules, but I was recently recognized by The Corporate America Legal Elite of 2015 as “Most Compassionate Family Mediator–California,” among other things. It seems to me that the way I’ve designed my “game” is working perfectly fine.

5 Ways Skynet Is More Real Than You Think

robot

Robots and world domination have long been the reserve of Hollywood and what-if scenarios — right up there with the zombie apocalypse and alien abduction. As artificial intelligence advances, however, there’s been a lot of recent buzz about threats AI could pose in the very near future. An intelligence system like Skynet, aka the “Global Digital Defense Network” that features prominently in the Terminator franchise, starts to feel like an increasingly real possibility.

While a malevolent empire that inflicts “Judgment Day” on us all is not so much what scientists fear, there are certain parallels in developing technology to this highly intelligent (and human-hating) software. With a little more than a decade left before the robot-run future “Terminator” predicts, we partnered with “Terminator Genisys” to round up the reasons artificial intelligence is becoming a very real force to be reckoned with.

1. It’s Being Used By The Military …

As a “dual use” technology, capable of great good and great harm, AI is most controversial when it comes to its military applications. Battlefield robots and drones are key priorities with other sci-fi&#8212style technology like HAL — a suit that gives the wearer the power of 10 men — and Boston Dynamics’ Petman, an anthropomorphic robot used to test chemical protection clothing. Some believe developments like these signify an unacknowledged arms race amongst nations investing heavily in AI.

Drones and robots that are able to make the “kill decision” autonomously — without human intervention — will figure centrally into an international conversation about ethics and the nature of modern war. Even more controversial is the NSA’s cyber weapon MonsterMind. This intelligence system can not only intercept every digital communication in the U.S., but also identify threats and independently launch strikes. Sound familiar? If that isn’t Skynet in its real-life form, what is?

2. It’s Evolving Quickly …

Moore’s Law famously estimates that computing power approximately doubles every 18 months. By that measure, a computer with the processing power of the human brain could be a reality as early as 2025!

While some physicists think Moore’s Law may break down before that, computers with lightening fast processing power have already emerged. How fast? To give you an idea, Ray Kurzweil estimated the total calculations per second the brain can compute at 10^16 cps (calculations per second). The world’s fastest supercomputer, China’s Tianhe-2, has surpassed that number at almost 34^16 cps.

3. It’s Getting Smarter …

While artificial intelligence is quickly reaching formidable computing speeds, one of its biggest challenges is developing the kind of complex processing that looks so easy when humans do it.

For a computer, multiplying two 10-digit numbers instantly is easy; however, looking at a dog and deciding whether it’s a feline or canine is incredibly hard. The Turing Test was thereby developed by mathematician Alan Turing to measure a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to a human’s.

Among the tech companies that seek to ace the Turing Test, Google has emerged as a major AI force, investing hundreds of millions of dollars in AI startup DeepMind and robotics companies like Boston Dynamics. Google’s inventions include self-driving cars and ladder-climbing humanoid robots, complete with freaky, robotic pets.

4. It’s Starting To Look Like Us …

Although not exactly the Terminator — Schwarzenegger-status muscle and all — these robots from Japan are starting to look eerily like us. Geminoid F, created by Hiroshi Ishiguro, has 65 facial expressions and can smile, talk and even sing!

His goal was to create a robot that could fool people into thinking it’s real. Mission accomplished — now, we have nightmares.

5. An Elite Opposition Is Forming …
elon musk

“The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” Sounds like a quote from any number of the popular, sci-fi movies dealing with robots and revolution, right? Wrong. This warning comes from one of the foremost thinkers of our time, Stephen Hawking.

It is no wonder, then, that Hawking, other scientists, tech innovators and AI experts have signed an open letter issued by the Future Of Life Institute calling on the field to safely coordinate endeavors and ensure AI does not pose an existential threat as it advances toward human-level intelligence. Elon Musk takes this matter so seriously, he pledged 10 million dollars to support the organization and its research.

Today’s advancements in AI draw a parallel theme to Skynet, the artificial intelligence software in Terminator Genisys that leads to Judgement Day. When John Connor sends Sgt. Kyle Reese back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor and safeguard the future, he finds himself in a new and unfamiliar version of the past. He is faced with a new T-800 terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger), new enemies, and a new mission: To reset the future … Terminator Genisys is in theatres July 1st.

How Family Law Attorneys Tend to Think, Part VI

As if the prior five parts of this series weren’t frightening enough, it only gets worse.

A great many of my family law attorney colleagues believe that mediation only works under such narrow circumstances, that almost no cases are appropriately suitable for it. They believe that mediation is only effective in family law cases under the following circumstances:

1. Full disclosure of all assets and debts,
2. Knowledge of their legal rights and obligations,
3. No power imbalances,
4. The decision to divorce is mutual, and
5. The parties equally share the cost of the mediation.

From my vantage point, the first two points are tied together and relate to the issue of making “informed decisions.” As I have said before, legally “competent people making informed decisions can agree on anything they want, that is not illegal or otherwise in violation of public policy.” No argument here. However, the statement I made expresses my opinion, whether agreements are reached through negotiation, mediation, or through any other means. It is important to note that in California, division of assets and debts is a trial issue and that only approximately three percent of all family law cases go to trial. Therefore, almost all family law cases are resolved one way or another outside of trial.

Are my colleagues applying a higher standard for the level of informed consent required for a matter to be resolved through mediation than through negotiation? If so, why? What type of information is obtained through litigated negotiation that cannot be obtained through mediation?

Whether a matter is resolved through mediation, negotiation or litigation, I always require that the parties exchange their Declaration of Disclosures before agreeing on issues of a financial nature, except for very temporary agreements, if necessary. At a minimum, the Declaration of Disclosure consists of the following: (1) “A completed Schedule of Assets and Debts or a Property Declaration for both Community and Quasi-Community and Separate Property;” (2) “A completed Income and Expense Declaration;” and (3) “All tax returns filed by the party in the two years before the date that the party served the disclosure documents.”

When the forms specify that certain attachments are to be included, I don’t consider those documents complete unless and until those attachments (if they exist) are included and the information on the forms and the information matches.

In fact, after being retained to mediate a divorce case in which the parties are not represented (at least not yet), I send them the following email:

“Certain things must be done in order for a court to sign off on your divorce. You are married and spouses have a fiduciary duty to each other. The law requires that spouses make informed decisions when dealing with each other, and that includes during divorce proceedings. In fact, the courts have punished people for ‘hiding’ or otherwise failing to disclosure any assets and/or debts.

One such example occurred when a woman purchased a lottery ticket, won the jackpot and filed for divorce the following day. However, she neglected to advise her spouse that she won the lottery and failed to disclose it throughout the divorce process. Since the ticket was purchased during marriage, it was presumed that it was purchased with community property and was thus community property. Ultimately, the court gave all of the lottery winnings to the husband, even though he would only have been entitled to half, if his wife had done the right thing.

In another example, a husband failed to disclose an account with substantial assets that he believed was his separate property. Even if he were correct in his assumption, by not disclosing the account, the income it earned was not included for purposes of calculating support and the asset was not included for purposes of determining attorneys fees contributions. As a result, the court gave the entire asset to his wife.

I am sharing this information with you because I want you both to understand the importance of full disclosure and the consequences that could ensue, if you fail to take that responsibility to heart. I have attached a document that explains ‘what exactly must be disclosed’ and ‘disclosure tips’ from Forrest ‘Woody’ Mosten, an internationally well-respected family law mediator and trainer.

Please complete the following documents:

Income and Expense Declaration (with requisite attachments), and

Schedule of Assets and Debts (with requisite attachments).

The following article on characterization of assets might assist you: “California Divorce: Dividing Property – Assets and debts spouses acquire during marriage belong equally to both of them.”

The following article on characterization of debts might assist you: “Dividing the Debts in a California Divorce – A basic overview of how debts are dealt with in a California divorce. Learn about complex issues that can arise when dividing debts in a divorce.”

I also recommend that you review “The Most Common Financial Forms Used during a Divorce Case” from the website for the Superior Court of California, County of Contra Costa. In addition to providing links to instructions, it contains a link to view a PowerPoint presentation called “Financial Disclosures in a Divorce, Legal Separation or Annulment.”

If you want to better understand your legal rights and obligations with regard to child support and spousal support, you are welcome to review the California Judges Benchguide on Child and Spousal Support. However, please remember that you may agree on anything that you want, as long as it is not illegal or in violation of public policy. Thus, you are not limited to resolving those or other issues within the box of possibilities that would occur inside a courtroom. I, for one, don’t want to be placed in a box when I’m dead and I certainly don’t want to be forced into one, while I’m still alive. If you feel the same way, I recommend that you consider this material only for informational and perspective purposes and that you keep your mind open to the possibility of more creative solutions that better address your respective interests, needs, values, goals and fears. It is a grave mistake to confuse the concepts of “legal justice” with “fundamental fairness.”

Whether involved in negotiation, mediation or otherwise, I always ask my clients whether they would like to receive additional information from which to make informed decisions. If I am acting in the capacity of the attorney, I typically recommend that they obtain such additional information. However, when acting as the mediator, I can only provide legal information and not give legal advice. When providing legal information, I provide the clients with materials from which they can decide whether or not to request additional information. For example, if one of the spouses is self-employed or owns their own business, I provide them both with articles covering how to glean information from the tax returns and find “hidden assets.”

If one party requests additional information that the other party refuses to provide, they have the same right to conduct formal discovery before reaching agreements in mediation as they do in litigation. In addition, I always recommend that unrepresented parties retain consulting attorneys and that they meet with them after exchanging their Declarations of Disclosure and before discussing terms of settlement. For reasons that should be obvious from this series of articles, I tend to recommend that they retain “mediation-friendly family law attorneys.”

Furthermore, mediation can commence at any stage of the divorce, as was mentioned in my article titled “What Does Mediation Really Mean,” although when families are involved, the sooner the better. Moreover, even if a case falls out of mediation because a party was not acting in good faith, why can’t mediation be revisited once the parties are both comfortable that they have received sufficient information from which to make informed decisions?

Keep in mind that there wouldn’t be case law pertaining to re-opening cases and penalizing the non-disclosing party, if litigation were fool-proof in that regard. Let’s therefore not pretend otherwise. Regardless, the same language protecting one party from the other party’s lack of disclosure can be included in a settlement agreement, whether reached through litigated negotiation, mediation, or otherwise.

With regard to power imbalances, “sophistication and power imbalances may lead to inequitable results, unless mediation-friendly attorneys are involved to level the playing field.” That quote is from the chapter I authored for the 2013 edition of “Inside the Minds – Strategies for Family Law in California.” In other words, whoever said that parties who mediate their divorce cannot or should not be represented by counsel? It sure as heck wasn’t me. However, I do recommend that if parties involved in mediation retain counsel, they should retain “mediation-friendly family law attorneys.”

Furthermore, when I am mediating a case for unrepresented parties and the terms of their agreement fall outside my realm of reasonableness because of the sophistication of the parties, power imbalances or some other reason, I have been known to insist that they each consult with an attorney before I will move forward. In fact, the following is from an actual email I sent on just such a case: “Attached, please find my draft of your Marital Settlement Agreement. As you will see, there is some missing information that needs to be provided to me and included in the agreement. In addition, please advise me of any needed changes, in the event that the document does not accurately reflect your agreement. Furthermore, as I mentioned in our last mediation session, I will not put this document into final form unless and until I know for certain that you have each consulted with separate counsel who is knowledgeable in the field of family law in California. You may not be involved in selecting the consulting attorney that your spouse retains for this purpose, regardless of how such costs will be paid.”

I’m really at a loss as to why mediation would be inappropriate, unless the decision to divorce is mutual. I have successfully mediated a great many cases in which only one of the spouses wanted the divorce. What would make anyone think that an adversarial process is the only way of handling such a situation? Among other things, mediation is a dispute resolution process that helps to resolve or otherwise manage conflict. Litigation, on the other hand, is an adversarial process and therefore tends to increase the level of conflict and distrust in order to resolve legal issues. Why must the conflict level and distrust be exacerbated merely because the decision to divorce is not mutual?

It’s also beyond my comprehension why some of my colleagues believe that mediation only works if the parties share the cost equally. The California Family Law Code provides for attorneys fees contributions, in order to level the playing field. This issue is address all the time in litigated cases, regardless of whether or not they are resolved inside a courtroom. When family law attorneys hire private judges either to “mediate” or rule on a case, do they only do so if the parties equally pay the cost? I ask the question because it seems that this concern about the mediator being biased in favor of the party paying more of their fees only applies to facilitative mediators. Why?

Just last Sunday, I conducted the fourth and final mediation session on a case in which the husband has been paying all of my fees. I very seriously doubt that either of them would say that I was biased because of that or for any other reason.

That case went into ‪mediation‬ because of something I’ve been saying for years that resonated with them – “Like it or not, if there are children of the relationship (regardless of their age), you are still a family after the relationship ends.”

The power of that statement was repeated by them on Sunday, after they resolved all of their issues.

They are connected together for life because of their children and expressed the importance of maintaining an amicable relationship going forward.

Furthermore, the wife also mentioned her hesitation with the idea of mediating the divorce and said that it was much easier than they expected.

Such reactions don’t tend to occur following litigation.

By the way, I didn’t even bother mentioning the belief that many family law attorneys hold, which is that if a divorcing couple is able to work together in a constructive manner, they don’t need mediation. This belief circles back around to the article that led to this series in the first place – “Solid negotiation skills crucial for family lawyers.” The entire point of that article was the fact that family law attorneys are typically lacking in those skills, to say the least. Therefore, if the divorcing couple is ready, willing and able to have a constructive divorce, how about designing the “game” in a manner that will maximize that potential?

I’m not even going to address the argument that if divorcing couples are able to have a successful divorce, why are they even divorcing?

In case you haven’t figured it out by now, I have little patience for small-minded people. That having been said, while I may know how I mediate my cases, I certainly don’t know how other mediators operate. I am also not suggesting that my way of mediating is the only way of mediating or that my approach is better than those used by other mediators. As has been said by others in the past, “mediation is more of an art than a science.”

James Taylor: ‘People Think My Music Is Rotting Their Teeth’

“It's been a while,” James Taylor writes with typical wry humor in the liner notes to Before This World, his first album of new material in 13 years, released by Concord Records on June 16. Rare among his peers, Taylor has never made a stylistic digression; like the 15 releases before it, his new full-length gently considers restlessness and regeneration, addiction and salvation, setting storm-tossed feelings to placid ripples of music.

What Kids Really Think About Father’s Day

Father’s Day tends to bring a flood of heartfelt blog posts from parents and sweet dad-themed commercials from all sorts of brands.

But what do kids have to say about the holiday?

Comedian and YouTube personality Mark Malkoff interviewed some children about the dad-centric day, and their responses were predictably funny and adorable.

Highlights include the boy who claims his dad invented Father’s Day and the girl who says she’s going to give her father a trip to Disney World, paid for by him, of course.

Zoe Saldana’s Husband Takes Her Name, Doesn’t Care What You Think

Zoe Saldana’s husband doesn’t “give a sheet” what people say about his decision to take the actress’ last name.

The “Guardians of The Galaxy” star sits beaming on the cover of the July issue of InStyle magazine, in which she reveals how Italian artist Marco Perego took her name after the two secretly married in the summer of 2013. Perego, it turns out, made the progressive decision in spite of his wife’s doubts.

“I tried to talk him out of it. I told him, ‘If you use my name, you’re going to be emasculated by your community of artists, by your Latin community of men, by the world’,” the star told InStyle. “But Marco looks up at me and says [she puts on a cute Italian accent], ‘Ah, Zoe, I don’t give a sheet.’”

In the interview, which hits newsstands on June 15, the actress also talks about how motherhood has changed her marriage and her thoughts on what her post-pregnancy body should be like.

“I don’t want to get back to where I used to be,” Saldana told InStyle. “I want to feel healthy, and not just fit into the old jeans I used to wear. I’m a woman now. My body has changed forever. It’s softer… and stronger.”

Saldana and her husband welcomed their twin boys, Cy Ardio and Bowie Ezio, in November. Since then, the first-time mom has been vocal on social media about her struggles. Not only has she turned to Twitter for breastfeeding advice, but she also opened up on Facebook in April about the “dramatic changes” her body underwent, inside and out, after the birth of her sons.

As you all know, we welcomed twin boys last November. Yes, by far, the most amazing experience of my life, but also a very challenging experience when it pertains to my body. I’m sure moms across the world (and dads sometimes) can identify with what I’m about to say.

Your body changes dramatically, inside and out. You grow in places you never knew you could, and you are tired beyond belief. In some cases more than others, your body experiences a kind of trauma through childbirth that is difficult to explain unless you’ve had that experience. My case was like that, everything from my thyroid to my platelets crashed. Thank God, we are all doing great now, but my body was really bent out of shape after the boys were born. Bouncing back feels impossible, but I know it is important as a woman, and now a mommy, to not give up. I am determined to get my energy back and find balance for my body before these little guys start walking, and before I go back to work….. my clock is ticking!

The 36-year-old actress ended her long message to fans — which you can read here in full — by inviting other mothers to share their own struggles and support each other.

“I know many of you have gone through this or are going through it as we speak,” Saldana said in the Facebook post. “Let’s do it together. Let’s talk about it, hear each other out, and seek advice when we need it.”

Sarah Deragon’s ‘The Identity Project’ Challenges The Way We Think About Queer Identity

“The Identity Project,” from photographer Sarah Deragon, challenges the way that we compartmentalize and think about queerness and identity.

The photo series captures the way subjects want to present themselves to the world around them and communicate their personal ways of self-identifying. Mainstream understandings of what it means to be lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) tend to be narrow and specific, but with “The Identity Project,” we can see the infinite shades and hues of queerness that make up the spectrum of human identity.

dapper

The Huffington Post chatted with Deragon this week about her work and how the project has grown.

The Huffington Post: What is your driving vision for The Identity Project?
Sarah Deragon: My main vision for The Identity Project is to expand what we normally understand to be the LGBTQ communities. I wanted to create a photo project that allowed participants to self-identify and stand up and be seen for who they really are. I honestly thought that the project would be a small collection of 50 or so photographs, but the response to the project was so profound that I decided to expand it and travel to several US cities like New York City, Portland, Chicago and soon Austin to photograph more people. I imagine that this will be an ongoing project for me throughout my lifetime.

Four Design Movements that Formed How We Think

Co-written by Dr. Barry Katz

2015-03-24-1427173670-5012961-designmovements.jpg

Even more than art, design shapes how we experience our surroundings and ourselves. Think about it: art, almost by definition, abstracts from the details of everyday life; design shapes them in the most immediate way. Designers curate ideas and condense them into sensory expressions; they make ideas tangible–bad ones as well as good ones! Design constrains our behaviors and molds our perceptions and has been doing so for one hundred years.

The industrial revolution transformed the world by ushering in a new era of mechanized mass production. Cheap, factory-made goods became affordable to the general public and a middle class emerged, defined above all by its purchasing power. But this unprecedented material affluence came with a price: mass-produced products lost their soul, every bit as much as the factory laborers who tended the machines that made them.

English Arts & Craft
The English Arts & Craft Movement represented the first reaction against the debasement of the commodity in the industrial age. The “art workers” who formed themselves around the gigantic personality of William Morris (1834-96), perceived mass manufacturing as impersonal and a threat to human well-being–“For what is beauty,” asked Morris, “but the expression of a man’s joy in his labor?” The rough-hewn products of the Arts & Crafts movement celebrate the materials of which they are made and the hand of the craftsman who made them.

Bauhaus
In the aftermath of the First World War it had become clear that there was no turning back to the romantic, pre-industrial idylls of the Arts & Crafts. Under the leadership of Walter Gropius, the Bauhaus (1918-33) embraced the machine and searched for an aesthetic consistent with the technologies of modern production. Desk lamps, teapots, and typography all came to express the rational, rhythmic, geometrical manufacturing processes that made them possible.

Streamline
Machine Age America made its own contribution to the aesthetics of the everyday. Celebrity “industrial designers” such as Raymond Loewy, Henry Dreyfuss, and Norman Bel Geddes helped to lift America out of the Depression by rekindling the desire to consume: swoopy locomotives, streamlined office furniture, and skyscrapers whose tiered setbacks made them look like rocket ships firing themselves into the sky. Nothing was immune to the hand of the designer whose motto was, “Never leave well enough alone.”

Postmodernism
Inevitably, a reaction set in: Postmodernism went to war against the growing monotony of beige cubicles, Helvetica typefaces, and urban grids in favor of a palette of pastels, ambiguous forms, and a playful romp through the corridors of historical styles. In search of “Design Semantics,” designers experimented with new forms of expressing the emerging consumer electronic products. Proponents of “Human-Centered Design” have argued that the search for style is misplaced, and that the forms of products must evolve out of respect for the needs of the people who will use them.

What is the next major movement in design? Crowd-sourced design? Mass customization? One-off products created by the citizen-designers of the Makers Movement? The increasing democratization of design and manufacturing suggests that it will not be long before each of us end up having our own personal movement!

‘Empire’ Is Showing Us A New Way To Think About Black TV Characters

The Fox drama “Empire” reigned supreme Wednesday evening, capping off its breakout first season with a two-hour finale whose latter half drew 17.6 million viewers, according to Associated Press reports. That’s about an 18 percent jump from the show’s March 11 episode, which 14.9 million people watched. It’s also the greatest number of people to watch the first-season finale of a TV drama since “Grey’s Anatomy” in 2005.

Since its Jan. 7 debut, “Empire” has stirred up numerous conversations about show creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, and the ways in which they’ve addressed various topics — some of them drawn from Daniels’ own traumatic early life — that often go unmentioned on black television.

“’Empire’ is resisting the impulse to present the typical one-dimensional, stereotypical characters we have seen in the past around representations of African Americans,” said Robin R. Means Coleman, an author and communications professor at the University of Michigan, told The Huffington Post.

“While some have noted that its attention to ALS and being bipolar is oversimplified, and that the ‘homophobia-in-the-Black-community’ narrative is a bit clichéd, that fact of the matter is that ‘Empire’ is a series that is ‘going there,’ on these important issues,” Coleman continued. “More, these discussions reside right alongside other topics that have not typically been seen in a Black series, such as IPOs.”

Even as ratings have soared over the course of the season’s 12 episodes, critics have debated “Empire’s” authenticity and its portrayal of African-Americans. Others have questioned whether the show is glorifying certain stereotypes that are often associated with inner-city black communities.

During a recent appearance on “Access Hollywood,” Terrence Howard, who plays “Empire” patriarch Lucious Lyon, mentioned that he’d like to hear the show’s characters use the n-word in the second season. Though the n-word is almost never heard on television today, it was heard on many popular black TV shows of earlier eras, including “Sanford and Son” and “The Jeffersons.”

“I believe if we’re gonna really tackle racism, if we’re gonna tackle bigotry, if we’re gonna tackle homophobia, we need to attack it dead on,” Howard said on “Access Hollywood.” “You don’t just sit up, you know, ‘let’s give a little aspirin right here.’ No, we need to take the sutures, open up the problem and reach in and grab it.”

“And since [the n-word] is used in almost every conversation in most black neighborhoods, why is it that we don’t hear it on TV anymore?” he continued. “Are white people afraid of it? Did they create the word? But if this is something that we use on a daily basis, then let’s address what it really means.”

Should a popular a sitcom such as “Empire” incorporate the usage of the n-word in an effort to combat racism and maintain authenticity within the black community? According to a highly unscientific poll of HuffPost readers, the answer is no by a margin of almost 3 to 1.

“We are supposed to be in such progressive times as a nation and a culture, why do we have to retread to something that represents such a heinous part of our history,” the entertainment journalist Karu F. Daniels told HuffPost in an email.

“Why does a fictitious prime time soap opera have to be ‘that authentic’?” Daniels went on. “I think enough slurs have been used. They don’t need any more. It’s not a reality show. And it’s not cable. We are talking about a primetime soap opera right? There are black people on ‘The Young & The Restless’ and ‘The Bold & The Beautiful’ — some from humble backgrounds — they don’t use the n-word.”

Besides “Empire’s” eagerness to tackle explosive topics, another key part of the show’s success has been Taraji P. Henson, who plays Lucious’s ex-wife, Cookie. Henson has gained a cult following for her work on “Empire,” which continues in the lineage of Shonda Rhimes’ force-of-nature black leading ladies on “Scandal” and “How To Get Away With Murder.” In fact, Strong recently entertained the idea of having “Scandal’s” Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) show up on a future episode of “Empire.”

“I think television viewing audiences are seeing a surge in strong black female lead characters that haven’t been seen for years on primetime television dramas. And that’s a good thing,” Daniels told HuffPost. “Shows such as ‘Scandal’ and ‘Empire’ and even ‘Tyler Perry Presents The Haves And The Have Nots’ are infectious, over-the-top soap operas that an underserved and virtually ignored demographic gravitate towards because they walk in the door knowing that it’s fictitious entertainment as opposed to the over-produced, scripted schlock that reality TV has become.”

“Cookie represents a hood-rat with a heart of gold who made many sacrifices to do what she thinks is right,” Daniels continued. “She’s not perfect and polished and doesn’t try to be. But she, surprisingly, can be the moral center of the show.”

“Olivia is more aspirational to some. She has the pedigree and all of the sophistication we haven’t seen in primetime television since Diahann Carroll was on ‘Dynasty’ 30 years ago,” he added. “But she is flawed when it comes to matters of the heart, having an affair with a married man. And because of those types of imperfections, it humanizes her in a way that is relatable to many.”

If You Think Money Buys Happiness, Watch This (VIDEO)

“Winning the lottery changed our lives for the worse,” says Jodie, whose husband, Edwin, hit a $ 25 million jackpot when he and 14 co-workers bought tickets in a pool. Since Edwin got his after-tax share of the winnings, Jodie says he’s acted like it’s only his money, and that their marriage has gone downhill fast with divorce threatened numerous times. “He thought it was his money and nobody was going to tell him what to do with it. The only thing I really requested is that we purchase a home,” Jodie says. “I found out he paid for his brother’s house. I couldn’t believe he would just hand over half a million dollars and put it in under someone else’s name. I absolutely think he got rid of the money so i wouldn’t have any access to it.”

But Edwin says his wife practically has dollar signs dancing in her head, and that their marriage was in trouble before the winning lottery ticket. “When I won the lottery, she was more excited than me. I think that’s why she’s with me,” he says, claiming that he gave her $ 500,000 of the lottery winnings and she has squandered it. Looking back on their courtship, he recalls, “I had no freedom. Jodie had control over me. I felt like I was under house arrest. She always put me on the spot and made me feel like I do everything wrong.”

Edwin sums up where the marriage stands in his eyes: “I want to get help to make us better, but i feel like there is no hope.”

The Loft Is So Much Better Than You Think It Is Going to Be

The Loft is a surprisingly entertaining film that keeps the audience in the dark as to its villain(s) until the very end. The fact the ending is logical and difficult to anticipate makes this movie an above average feature. There is also some solid acting from a cast not particularly known for the type of roles they are inhabiting.

The premise of the film is that five friends partner up to buy a loft where they can have complete privacy. Vincent (Karl Urban) is the man with the plan but his buddies Luke (Wentworth Miller), Marty (Eric Stonestreet) and Philip (Matthias Schoenaerts) eagerly commit to their share of payment and accept their keys. All of the men are married but this does not seem to be a problem except for Chris (James Marsden) who intends to be faithful to his wife (Rhona Mitra). His fidelity lasts until he meets Anne (Rachel Taylor) and falls completely in lust.

Now all five men are using the lift for their various trysts. Everything is going smoothly until one morning they discover a body in the bed. Since there is no sign of a break in and the alarm code has been entered they become suspicious of each other. Still all claim complete innocence, but in this film no one is who or what they claim to be.

Both Urban and Marsden have more screen time than the others so they could be considered the leads. However in this movie the supporting players get to have the meatier scenes. Stonestreet who is best known for his current role on Modern Family as Cameron, is a complete surprise here as the drunken, woman chasing Marty. Equally good is Miller, who once starred in the Fox series Prison Break. Here he is an intellectual and also a shy man.

The movie operates with a present day story interspersed with numerous flashbacks. In many movies this has proven to be an annoying way of telling a story and I generally prefer a linear approach. In this film, however, the back and forth storytelling works. Each flashback provides another peeling back of a layer of deception. There is one “aha” moment after another.

In The Loft movie the women are not the prominent players but Isabel Lucas and Taylor, who play Sarah and Anne, manage to make their presence known. Both are beautiful women and that adds to the validity of their roles.

The movie is rated R for violence, profanity and nudity.

The Loft arrived with little advance fanfare so it might not even be on your entertainment radar. If you like movies that keep you in the dark until the reveal then this is a movie you want to see. Believe me, it is so much better than you think it is going to be ,

I scored The Loft a high up 7 out of 10.

This Will Make You Think Twice Before You Complain To Your Mom About Your Husband (VIDEO)

Sarah says her parents, Bill and Laura, don’t approve of her pastor husband of eight years, Jason, and won’t stop meddling in her marriage. “My parents hate Jason,” she says. “My parents are controlling. It’s their way or the highway.”

But Bill and Laura insist they have good reason to meddle in Sarah’s marriage — they claim Jason is controlling and verbally abusive. “Sarah wasn’t given to him; he took her,” Laura says. “She can’t talk to mom, she can’t talk to dad, she can’t talk to her brother. She is a pastor’s wife, so therefore she has no friends.”

Jason admits he can be overbearing and “a jerk” at times but insists the bigger problem is Bill and Laura, who can’t seem to let go. “I feel like I have to protect Sarah from her parents,” he says. “They love her in a very distorted way.”

Sarah admits that she has complained to her parents about some of the struggles in her marriage and that has contributed to the contentious relationship. And Dr. Phil explains to her why it’s a problem that she turns to her mother when Jason does something that upsets her. “What happens is you get really upset, and you call her and dump on her and give her all the bad news, but then all the times when you are intimate, and supportive, and loving and caring, you don’t give her blow by blow of all of that, do you?” he says to her in the video above.

“I do tell her, though, that he is working on things,” Sarah says.

On Dr. Phil on Wednesday, tensions boil higher when Jason’s parents join the conversation. Click here to see more from this episode.

It looks as if So You Think You Can Dance creator Nigel Lythgoe has finally lured artist/dancer Paula Abdul to the show, as the new hosts have finally been revealed. Also joining Abdul is Jason Derulo, who many expect to have an active hand in the series new “Stage vs. Street” section of the show which will allow participants to incorporate more Hip Hop inspired dances into their performances.

In a recent statement Nigel discussed the additions, “With the new and exciting format comes a new and exciting panel of judges. I’m delighted that Paula Abdul and Jason Derulo will be joining me at the judges’ table this season… Paula is an incredible artist and she brings the perfect combination of expertise and heart to the panel. Jason’s insight, humor, and creativity will add a new perspective to the panel that we haven’t had before.”

Mama June’s Mother And Daughter Both Think She’s “Full Of It” (VIDEO)

“Mama June” Shannon has denied reports that she has rekindled her romance with the man convicted of sexually molesting her oldest daughter when she was 8. Her mother, Sandra, says her daughter is a liar and in denial about the past.

“I’m very disgusted with her,” Sandra tells Dr. Phil in the video above. “Any mother who would come and bring a sex offender, knowing he’s a sex offender, with her children around, knowing what already had happened to one of her children. I think she’s still in denial. I think she’s been in denial all this time.”

“You mean you think she still doesn’t believe [Anna]?” Dr. Phil asks.

“I do, in some ways. I don’t think she believes what happened to Anna,” she says.

“Did she just boldfaced look me in the eye and lie to me?” asks Dr. Phil, who met with Mama June in person to hear her side of the story.

“Yes, sir,” Sandra says.

On Dr. Phil Thursday, Mama June’s oldest daughter, Anna, describes the abuse she suffered at 8 years old at the hands of Mama June’s then-boyfriend. And, Anna sees her Uncle Poodle for the first time in nearly a year. Click here to see where you can watch.

Suicide Is Closer Than You Think

The world has lost comic genius Robin Williams. We are stunned and deeply saddened.

His representative said he was battling depression. Depression is the highest risk factor for suicide. We are left trying to make sense of this senseless death. The reality is that that’s a hallmark of suicide — loved ones are left with many questions that may never be answered.

There is so much stigma around suicide, you would be surprised how often it occurs and to whom. We typically think of the teen suicide or the younger adult, but those who are older complete suicide also. It’s just more often covered up.

In my work, counseling countless people in grief, I regularly hear in hushed voices about how Uncle Mike’s death was actually not cancer but suicide. And grandfather Joe’s death wasn’t really an accidental death. We lie a lot to keep the secret and try to avoid the shame. So many families have a secret suicide. Your work place has a secret suicide.

Unfortunately, suicides occur every 13 minutes to 65 minutes depending on the statistics. Some reports say suicide deaths outnumber murders 5 to 3, but we more often hear about the murders and not the suicides. What we know is that we now have yet another sad wake up call.

Every time someone is public about suicide, it’s a powerful teachable moment for all of us. While we can talk about Robin’s suicide, can we talk about our own loved one that died by suicide? While Robin’s suicide is being handled so compassionately, we fear our loved ones suicide will be judged. Grief should be a no judgment zone, no matter how it happened.

We also all need to do our part to help those left in the wake the suicide not have to deal with the stigma on top of the loss. The loss alone is bad enough.

Those left in the wake of suicide need our support, not our judgment. And that begins with understanding. Here are three important ideas to know about suicide:

1. Loved ones are not responsible. They are not superhuman and cannot stop a suicide if a person is determined to take his or her own life.

2. Don’t look for the “one thing” that did it. Mental illness is complex and it’s as real as diabetes. Suicide is not just situational — it is about how we process life.

3. Get and give help. The stigma around mental illness often prevents loved ones from asking for help and it sometimes prevents other people in their life from giving help.

If you don’t know what to say to someone who lost a loved one to suicide, try “I am here with you” or “I am sorry for your loss.” Start there.

To that end, we in the healthcare world are attempting to change the language around suicide. The words “committed” or “attempted” only criminalize mental illness. The saying it was “a successful attempt” leaves a sense that the act is to be congratulated. Instead, the new terminology is a “completed” suicide or “not completed” suicide or the person “died by suicide.” No matter what it is, called it is one of life’s worst tragedies.

Robin Williams is someone we all loved. If it can happen to him, it can happen to someone we know and probably did.

In grief we don’t want to remember someone strictly with pain at the end. We want to honor him by honoring others that are dealing with suicide. For Robin, we want to remember the love and the life…and the laughter. Robin Williams’ death is not only a tragic loss for his family but for all he made laugh. Thank you, Robin.

Easy To See Why People Think This Is The ‘Bike Of The Future’

Imagine a stylish, yet sturdy, bicycle with storage space for all your stuff, a handlebar that doubles as a lock, and a removable electric motor that can give you a much-needed boost on those steep city hills.

This bicycle also has automatic gear-shifting and a clever lighting system, complete with integrated brake lights and turn signals, and lights that automatically switch on when it gets dark out.

If you think this sounds like some sort of commuter super-bike of the future, you’d be only half right.

The bike, dubbed the “Denny,” was crowned the winner this week at the Oregon Manifest Bike Design Project competition. The contest pitted five teams from across the country (each a collaboration between a bike company and a design firm) against each other in the creation of the “ultimate urban utility bike.”

The teams were “competing to concept, create and champion their unique vision of tomorrow’s bicycle for the everyday rider,” the project’s website says. “The results will redefine the category and have the potential to reshape urban mobility itself.” The winner was determined by popular vote.

By beating out the competition, the masterminds behind the “Denny” — Seattle-based design consultancy Teague, which has designed the interior of Boeing jetliners, and custom bike builder Sizemore — will now be partnering with Fuji Bikes to turn their idea into a real, mass-produced product.

According to KING-TV, at least 1,000 Denny bicycles will be manufactured for sale. The bikes are scheduled for public release next year.

Though the retail price of the bike has yet to be made public, the Denny — which Engadget calls the “bike of the future” — already has a group of fans.

“Please put this bike into production. I need it,” wrote one Vimeo user last week after watching the promo video for the bike. “I’m seriously begging here. Please.”

“I want one of those desperately,” wrote another.

To learn more about the “Denny” or the other four bikes designed for the Oregon Manifest Bike Design Project, visit the project’s website here. Watch the video, below.

Real Beauty: Why We Think Healthy Should Be The New Skinny

By Mary Alice Stephenson and Lindsey Coco for GLAM4GOOD

Why can’t having a healthy body be enough?

Katie Willcox asked that question after being both fat shamed and skinny shamed. The lowest point in the former plus size model’s career in the fashion industry was when she decided to get healthy. Willcox went from a being a very successful full figure, size-14 model to an out-of-work model at size 8. “It was really hard to go from being a successful plus size model to only having a few clients, and I couldn’t understand it because I looked better and I felt so much better — but I was not valued at a healthy size,” said Willcox. Although Willcox was regularly working, she felt overweight and did not feel healthy. “I decided to get my body to a place where I did feel comfortable and healthy,” she explains. “It was a really difficult time because I have modeled professionally since I was 17 years old, and I worked hard to become a really good model — and all of a sudden I was now dismissed, which made me feel sad, useless and not good enough.”

katie willcox

GLAM4GOOD wonders why being a healthy size isn’t enough? In an industry that seems to be obsessed with either the very skinny or very curvy, where is the middle ground? Willcox talked to GLAM4GOOD about the challenges of being healthy in an industry obsessed with opposite extremes.

katie willcox

katie willcox

Willcox created Healthy Is The New Skinny to show girls and women how to have a more realistic and balanced approach to fashion and beauty. She is on a mission to break the industry’s reliance on the unnatural, and often unhealthy, requirements for being a fashion model. In addition, Willcox hopes to empower people to see the beauty in all shapes and sizes. She strongly believes “the most valuable thing we have in life is our health, and that should be our focus. Health and happiness are the key to beauty and keeping the mind, body and soul in balance.” Healthy Is The New Skinny was born from Willcox’s negatives experiences in the modeling business and her belief that the media defines women and beauty in a very narrow way, which contributes to women being dissatisfied with their bodies and themselves.

katie willcox

Willcox says the worst part about working in the fashion industry is the competitive nature of models and agents. “I think when you take young girls and pay them for the way they look, and they are competing against other girls, it breeds ugliness. I also don’t like the message the fashion industry sends to young girls about beauty,” she says. “It is all fake, and that’s why I now try to show girls what real beauty is versus manufactured perfection.” Willcox also created Natural Model Management and says it’s “for models like me! We represent models of all sizes and most importantly the models must be kind, like-minded, positive people aside from being beautiful. We hope to see the industry move toward that mentality as well.”

GLAM4GOOD asked Willcox how she would like to see the fashion and beauty industry change: “I would love to see all types of models being used — all colors, sizes and ages. In life there is beauty all around us, but we teach people to only think that beauty is thin, tall and young. Sure that is beautiful as well, but so limiting.” Willcox thinks people in fashion are afraid to seem ordinary, and that is why they don’t like more realistic female bodies. “What they don’t understand is that healthy body shapes are not ordinary, they are inspiring,” she says. “When they figure that out, I think the public response will speak for itself.”

katie willcox

How can you learn to love your body? Katie Willcox gives GLAM4GOOD her top 3 tips!

1. LAUGH: When it comes to loving your body, I would say start by having a sense of humor. When you laugh [in life], things just seem a little less severe. You will have good days and bad days, and it is ok to look back at some of those bad days and think “OMG, I WAS CRAZY.” Like the one time I cried because I licked frosting off of a baking sheet. True story. Not my fondest memory, but you have to have a good laugh at moments like this in retrospect. Then after you are done, take a few moments to be kind and grateful for how far you have come. That is what life is all about, learning as you go so you can’t beat yourself up; you just have to learn and make adjustments.

2. KICK A LOT OF ASS: Find something physical to do that is fun. I just started boxing with a boxing coach and I love it. When I have a really frustrating day, it is so fun to go punch stuff! I also lift weights with my husband, and that has done amazing things for me mentally. Girls are often taught to be weak, small and helpless, and we carry that with us subconsciously. There is something that happens when I get in the gym and start lifting weights — I no longer want to be skinny or small, I want to be strong and kick ass!

3. SOUL SISTERS: Connect to the female spirit. When I started to look past my personal “problems,” being that I wasn’t the size I needed to be to model, I started to educate myself on what other women around the world were going through. I started to think about these women and how I am not any different from them. I was born in the USA and happen to be pretty, so I am given more opportunities in life. As I read about the horrible crimes that are being committed against these women [around the world], I could feel the sadness. After doing our Healthy Is The New Skinny body image workshops called Beautiful Warriors, I realized girls in our country are experiencing the same pain, abuse and repression. The world view of women as a whole is that we are “lesser than.” Teaching us to hate our bodies is a direct reflection of that world view. It was through my connection to other girls and women who are fighting to love themselves that I was then able to heal myself. When you connect to the loving energy of the female spirit you can heal your pain and replace it with love. We are taught that we need men to love us, but maybe the love we have needed all along is that of our soul sisters. Now that is the kind of army this world needs.

OKComrade Is Exactly What You Think It Is

If you’re striking out in the online dating circuit and find yourself asking where all the cute, available communists go to find love, you’re finally in luck.

OKComrade, a new dating platform which launched on May 4, bills itself as a leftist alternative to “bourgeois” dating sites like OKCupid — a way for socialists, communists and anarchists to connect with like-minded revolutionaries.

okcomrade

There are a few rules: “No Sexism, no racism, no heterosexism, or transphobia.” But according to their Facebook page, you’re basically welcome to join so long as you aren’t “a dick.”

At this moment, OKComrade is just a Facebook page. Singles can message the page administrators with a picture and a bio, and the administrators will post the mini-profile to the page, where other singles are free to comment or message the user directly. Some people take it more seriously than others.

okcomradepost

It’s an imperfect system. But hey, love is never perfect.

Due to the Facebook page’s relative success in garnering about 3,700 “Likes,” one of OKComrade’s creators, who identified himself simply as Jacob, told The Huffington Post that his team is working hard to develop a full-blown website or mobile app.

“We want this to be a safe space for leftists to meet people who share our values,” he said in an email. “Your politics reflect those values as well as your entire worldview and it makes sense to seek out the companionship of those who share similar world-views.

“If Christians, Muslims, Jews, and Atheists can have their own matchmaking sites, there’s no reason someone who’s politics are one shade of red or another can’t either,” he added.

okcomradepost

He’s correct. If revolution isn’t your thing, there are a number of other niche dating sites for you to choose between, including ones for vegetarians, Ayn Rand fans, self-described chubby-chasers, bibliophiles, “beautiful” people, sugar daddies, farmers and adulterers.

Currently, OKComrade doesn’t have a way of making money. And really, it’s hard to imagine an IPO ever going over well with the anti-capitalist crowd it’s catering to.
