The Magical Thinking Opposition

My hypothesis is that the political side that is out of power is the one that hallucinates the most – and needs to – in order to keep their worldview intact. For example, when President Obama was in office, I saw all kinds of hallucinations on the right about his intentions to destroy America from the inside because he “hates” it.

That was a mass hysteria. If President Obama wanted to destroy America, he failed miserably. We’re stronger than ever.

The birther issue started as ordinary political shenanigans to delegitimize the president. I call it ordinary because you see the trick used whenever it is an option, as it was with “Canadian” Ted Cruz in the primaries. Eventually it morphed into a full-blown hallucination that President Obama was a Muslim sleeper cell from Kenya, or something like that. That was mass hysteria.

Now that Democrats are out of power, we should expect them to hallucinate like crazy (literally) because the election results of 2016 shattered their expectations. Do we see signs of their hallucinations? I’ll walk you through a few examples.

Hallucination:

Based on President Trump’s tweets and speeches, I can see into his soul, and it is all darkness and racism in there.

Real:

If the President of the United States tries anything racist in the real world, the Supreme Court, Congress, and the voters would shut him down in a heartbeat. For example, the Courts modified President Trump’s immigration ban to remove even the perception of racism. That’s a sensitive filter for racism, and I think we like it that way.

Society’s standard is that you are judged for what you do, not what you privately think. That’s good because humans are terrible at knowing what other people think, while at the same time we think we are good at it. I know this first-hand because dozens of people misinterpret what I write on social media every day. If you don’t have my type of experience  – of being routinely misinterpreted – you might think humans are good at reading minds based on subtle clues. We are not good at that. We might be slightly better than random chance, at best. The problem is that we are dead-certain we are champions of evidence-based mindreading. That is a hallucination.

Hallucination:

I can spot a racist by how long it takes them to properly disavow other racists.

Real:

That isn’t a thing. The first rule of communicating is that people only hear what they think you intend to say. They don’t hear what you actually say. If you think someone is a racist, you will perceive their disavowals of racism as too late and too inadequate. If you think someone is not a racist, you might see their statements as politically incorrect and nothing worse. This phenomenon is most pronounced when strong emotions are involved. The topic of racism stirs our strongest emotions. So according to everything we know about brains, we should expect the highest level of hallucinations when racism is the topic. And that is exactly what we observe.

To be clear, racism itself is very real. The hallucination is limited to seeing it under every bed and behind every couch.

Hallucination:

The president has accomplished nothing!

Real:

The president has accomplished a long list of things.

That said, we are 13% into President Trump’s first term, and Congress has created no major bills worthy of signing. Congress is tasked with working out the details of bills. The president can’t do his job until they do theirs.

We observe that the president has not shown leadership on any major legislation. But keep in mind that Congress produced nothing worthy of leadership. Would any leader be able to fix that? Yes, but I assume it takes longer than simply signing bills that come to your desk. Especially in this hyper-polarized environment.

Hallucination:

President Trump is performing poorly!

Real:

Compared to what? The imaginary president in your head? There is no base case with which to compare any president’s performance. Would Hillary Clinton have passed major legislation with a Republican Congress in less than six months? It seems unlikely. But we can’t know because she isn’t president.

We are terrible at judging how well a stranger performs compared to the imaginary person in our minds. We just think we are good at it.

Hallucination:

If you thought some “fine people” were marching with Nazis and KKK in Charlottesville, you are a racist.

Real:

I condemn all racists and anyone who marches with them. But It turns out that some non-racists were at the event to support the absolute right of free speech, including the worst kinds of speech. In this one case, President Trump passed the fact-checking but failed miserably on the “saying the right thing” dimension.

He wisely left the facts alone after failing on the empathy.

Hallucination:

This country needs moral leadership and we are not getting it!

Real:

The country does not need moral leadership in 2017. Social media has filled that void. The country is unified (let’s say 98%) in condemning the KKK and other racists in Charlottesville. We did that without moral leadership. We want moral leadership, but there is no evidence we need it.

We would also like to know our president has the right intentions. But hallucinations on that topic are nearly unfixable. Obama never fixed it. Trump will not either.

Hallucination:

The way you worded your statement, you made a moral equivalence between the KKK and people protesting the KKK.

Real:

Literally no one but the KKK and other extreme racists has any trouble understanding that Nazis are worse than the people protesting against hate. It is a hallucination (or political tricksterism) to suggest normal citizens can’t distinguish the moral difference between Nazis and those demonstrating against racism.

I could go on, but I think you are starting to see the picture. The party out of power has to hallucinate to make their world make sense. The people who think they are smart and morally pure don’t understand why their side lost an election. The simplest fix for that broken worldview is to imagine there are far more “secret racists” than they first assumed, and those people can be identified by the way they accidentally reveal their “moral equivalence” opinions that look exactly like law-and-order opinions to others.

I could go on, but I think you get the idea. Cognitive dissonance hits the losing team hardest. It has to, because only the losing side need to make sense of it all. The winning side thinks things are going exactly as expected. They have no trigger for hallucinating.

If our next president is a Democrat, expect the Right to do most of the hallucinating. The Left will think things are going as expected.

Update: If you are still confident you can read President Trump’s inner thoughts because of the clear pattern of racist acts he has committed, see if this article about the Central Park 5 shakes your confidence in what you thought you knew.

Remember, President Trump is not the only person good at persuasion. The opposition is running on all cylinders.

Thinking Past the Sale – Trump Persuasion Series

Trump issued a series of five tweets in quick succession as a response to the controversy over the Obama-birther guy at the Trump event.

Why five tweets?

I assume the two-dimensional chess pundits will tell you it is a sign of desperation from a campaign that was always destined to flame out. Sure looks like a guy grasping at straws, right?

Maybe it is.

The Master Wizard Hypothesis has another filter on this. According to this way of thinking, Trump just made you think about which of several reasons you will choose to agree with him.

He made you think past the sale.

And to get there he said at least one, maybe two, things you agree with. That’s pacing. It is a tell.

On the Master Wizard scale, this was an A+ performance in engineered persuasion. Will it be enough?

Depends what the Master Wizard in the White House does next.

Reminder

I remind readers that the Master Wizard Hypothesis is for entertainment, not enlightenment. Truth is at a different URL. All we are doing here is seeing how well the data fits the hypothesis, especially for predictions. This is just for fun. And yes, I am forcing the data to fit the hypothesis. That is the whole point. You should do the same with whatever hypothesis you prefer as an explanation of Trump’s success so far. Then compare. None of this should be confused with science.

Thinking of Asking a Woman When She’s Going to Have Kids? Don’t.

I am a single twentysomething living and working in New York City; I like yoga, running, hanging out with friends, pursuing hobbies and binge-watching television shows on Netflix. My current lifestyle sounds like that of countless other single twentysomethings living in New York City — yet there is one thing random people seem to want to change, and they seem to ask me about it on a consistent basis. It feels like I get asked about this one aspect of my life more than any other, but maybe that’s because I’m just so tired of talking about it.

My relationship status. Specifically, when I’m going to have kids.

It would really be nice to still get questions about things besides children, family and marriage. When I say “twentysomething” and “career” in the same sentence, people often interpret that as “single” and “forever alone.”

Most of my friends, both male and female, have been asked, at some point or other during their 20s, when (not if — when) they will be getting married, having kids, settling down — and it’s awkward. It’s really awkward.

It’s also really rude.

Because the people who ask this question are not just asking me when I’m planning on having kids. They’re asking about my socioeconomic status, my love life, my job status and whether I’m responsible enough to take care of another human being — all at the same time. It may not seem like that from the outside looking in, but when trying to explain it to someone (because, yes, for whatever reason a simple one-word response will not suffice and you have to defend the fact that you don’t want kids at that moment with a long, drawn-out reply), you have to explain why you don’t want kids by elaborating on your current lifestyle.

When you reach a certain age and you are childless, people are going to assume there is something wrong with you. They aren’t going to consider that maybe you want to be single, hanging out with friends and having a good time. They don’t want to hear about how terrible dating is, how hard it is to look for a stable apartment, to advance in your career. They aren’t going to think about you pursuing your hobbies and interests and learning new languages. They are going to think about family, and they are going to wonder why you don’t have one. That’s been my experience, at least.

Having kids is a huge responsibility, and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. It means giving up my current, relatively carefree lifestyle for something new and unknown. It means trusting someone not only with my well-being but also with the life of a child we will bring into the world. It means years of dedication, understanding and love. My body would change drastically during those nine months of pregnancy, and it’s scary.

Come to think of it, why would I want to get pregnant when I will be shamed for gaining weight because I’m, y’know, growing a child inside of me? Why would I want to explain postpartum depression to people who have no idea it even exists? Why would I rush to have a child, knowing that the only major country that offers no paid leave for new mothers is of course the one I currently live in, the United States? Why would I want to get pregnant, when there’s also a very real possibility that I might be shamed when I return to work because I will then be a mother with a kid? That is, if I can even get a job and return to work after birthing a child.

There are so many unrealistic expectations when it comes to being pregnant and having children and having the perfect baby products that it’s overwhelming.

I don’t want someone to rush how I live my life. My life is just that: mine. The men and women around you who are single? It’s their choice whether they want to hit the bars and have fun or try to settle down by finding the right person. If they want you to know about their love life (or lack thereof), they will tell you. They will tell you because they trust you and value your opinion.

If they don’t? Then, quite frankly, it’s none of your business.

Women should not be defined by their marital status and whether or not they have children. Women are told they should feel empowered and follow their dreams — but then they face insidious judgments when they don’t have kids on someone else’s schedule. Successful women who are single and happily living their lives are, for some reason, regularly forced to explain their lifestyle choice of not having children to other people.

When am I going to have kids? I don’t know.

Next question.

Thinking About Having an Affair? Read This First

If you’re suffering in your relationship and feeling lonely, you may be tempted to reach out to someone outside of your marriage — with or without the intention of having an affair.

Perhaps someone at work that is paying attention to you.

You may be tempted to look up an old Facebook friend or chat with someone online.

Why having an affair is not going to solve your marriage lull.

This is a short term solution to a bigger problem that may cause you more trouble than it is worth and wreck your marriage and your life.

Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you can maintain a platonic relationship with a member of the opposite sex.

When you’re hurting, you may be surprised at what you are capable of doing.

There are also plenty of people who are looking to take what doesn’t belong to them. Even if your intentions are not to leave your spouse and your intentions are really not to have an affair, your feelings for that person may quickly develop to the point where you lose all your rational thinking.

It’s almost like temporary insanity.

You can become so chemically drawn to the other person, that all logic and common sense is thrown out the window, even against your better judgement.

Even marriage counseling may not be able to save you from the mess that you have gotten yourself into. Especially if you’re not willing to give up the person of interest.

Why do people throw away their lives for a cheap thrill of having an affair?

Because we kid ourselves into believing that this could be a real relationship and better than the one we are already in. Even if it means having to take care of someone else’s children and increased expenses, the infatuation blinds us from reality.

It’s much like when we fell in love with our spouse way back when. We were impervious to all of their flaws and potential issues we would face. It was an amazing feeling. Only now, you’re amazed with someone else. It’s the chemicals in your brain that are fooling you. Really. Studies show that when you spend time alone with someone else, you can actually fall in love with them, even if you are happily married (How to Improve your Marriage without talking about it, Drs. Pat Love and Steven Stosny).

Some people also find it thrilling to have a clandestine relationship. They were feeling bored in their marriage and so the excitement and adrenaline rush of sneaking around helps to fill that void.

But, just as your marriage went from romance to power struggle, so too your new fling will ultimately disappoint you and likely give you some of the same challenges that you are facing in your relationship.
What can you do now?

Don’t exit your relationship. You made a commitment for good times and bad. And right now it’s bad. So now’s the time to make it good.

Learn to articulate your needs in a safe and connected way so that you can get them met.

Work together to make your spouse your confidant that you can turn to. Learn effective communication that works if right now you can’t talk to each other.

Create an emotionally safe relationship where you both can be open with each other.

Invest your time and energy into reinvigorating your relationship by doing things differently. Go on vacation together, change scenery, try new things, date each other again.

You may be surprised that this lull in your relationship is actually an opportunity to revitalize your marriage and make it better than ever.

We know what it’s like when couples are in a stuck place (or worse!) and don’t know how to get their needs met within their marriage. It’s crucial to take action right away, before you pass the point of no return.

With best wishes for your relationship success,

Shlomo and Rivka Slatkin

Thinking Strategically

Are you a strategic thinker or a victim?

You’re probably one or the other.

The other day a smart, attractive, 27-year old, white woman told me it was hard to get a job in California because she is a woman.

That’s a victim.

A few months ago I had a minor leg injury that looked like it would keep me from doing cardio for a few weeks. My first thought was that it was an opportunity to do more weight training on my upper body, which I wanted to do anyway.

That’s strategic thinking.

Every problem creates an opportunity.

In the early days of Dilbert it looked as if the strip would fail. It was published in fewer than a hundred newspapers worldwide and sales had slowed to a trickle. In the comics business that almost always means a comic will disappear in a few years.

I saw the situation as nothing to lose. It was freedom. I could take risks that successful cartoonists could not, and so I did. Dilbert was the first syndicated comic on the Internet even thought the thinking of the day was that giving away your content for free was business suicide. But, as history showed, the Internet was essential to Dilbert’s Success.

Generally speaking, I have the following automatic responses to bad situations.

Chaos: There must be an opportunity in here someplace, as the saying goes.

Discrimination: Discrimination generally brings with it some reverse-discrimination (perpetrated by the minority plus the guilty-feeling majority) that you can use in your favor if you find it.

Broke: Nothing to lose. Take some risks.

Not in a Relationship: Great time to learn a new skill. Easy to relocate for work. Far easier to exercise and eat right. (I got an MBA at night during one relationship-free period.)

Angry mood: Good day to fire people who deserve it and yell at the people that need it. I do all that unpleasant stuff on my bad days because I know those days won’t get much worse. No point in ruining a perfectly good day when you can batch up all your bad stuff for a day that is already bad on its own. Never waste an angry mood.

A few years ago I was sharing some frustrations about my scheduling challenges with a friend. We were both juggling schedules for work, family, and especially kid activities. We were buried in the complexity of figuring out where we needed to be and when. So we formed a start-up (CalendarTree.com) to solve the problem, which it does for thousands of happy users. We will soon announce a new set of functions and a name change. (I predict that 80% of you will use at least one of the new features we are launching soon. I already use it every day.)

In my freshman year of college, I came down with mono, the so-called kissing disease. Doctors advised me to avoid physical contact with women for months. By coincidence, another student visiting the college infirmary for mono was one of the most attractive women I had seen on campus. She was way out of my league. But as I explained to her, the only person on campus she could kiss without fear was me. She became my girlfriend.

I grew up in a small town in upstate New York. There were only about forty kids in my graduating class. As you can imagine, the town did not have much economic opportunity. You might say it was bad luck to be born there, at least from an economic sense. But I saw it as an advantage because I had no special ties to my home town, and my parents were happy for me to follow my ambition. Because of that freedom, I could choose to live anyplace on earth that I could afford. So I sold my car for a one-way ticket to California, where the weather was nice and economy was humming. It was the best decision of my life.

I don’t believe pessimists can or should become optimists. But I think you can train yourself to think strategically.

Ed Sheeran Surprises Fan Singing ‘Thinking Out Loud’ In Canadian Mall With Impromptu Duet

An Ed Sheeran fan got the surprise of her life while singing “Thinking Out Loud” at a Canadian mall when the Grammy-nominated singer joined her on stage for a duet.

Sheeran happened to be in a music store at West Edmonton Mall when he heard the familiar sounds of his own hit song. Just outside the store, 13-year-old Sydney Bourbeau was singing the tune as part of a fundraiser for the local Humane Society.

With his cousin Murray Cummings recording, Sheeran hopped on stage and joined the performance.

Check it out in the clip above.

If the teen seemed unusually calm, it’s because she initially thought someone had come on stage to fix the microphone, Bourbeau told the Edmonton Journal. Once she realized it was Sheeran, she wasn’t sure what she should do.

“I was like, should I stop? I didn’t want to stop, but I wanted to talk to him,” Bourbeau told the newspaper. “This is, like, the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

After the performance, Sheeran’s manager contacted the girl and offered her tickets to an upcoming performance, according to MTV.

Cummings posed the video to YouTube and joked on Twitter:

Bourbeau had a tweet of her own:

The teen also posted a video of the moment, taken from another angle:

And here it is from yet another point-of-view:

Sheerhan is making a habit out of these impromptu concerts. Earlier this year, he surprised a couple by performing that same song for them on their wedding day.

Man Replaces Pet Store Signs With What We’re All Really Thinking

If more ads were brutally honest like these, we’d all be better for it.

Brilliant Gym Ad Says What We’re All Thinking About Kimye’s Marriage

About Me

My desires are not being met in my current relationship. My personality has been described by some as stubborn, serious, caring, and attentive. As for social situations, I'm more of a one-on-one conversationalist, as opposed to someone who loves big crowds. I love music and movies and am an avid tv fan. Drop me a line if you’re interested.
