It's been two years. Phil, Stu and Doug are happily living uneventful lives at home. Tattoos have been lasered off, files purged. The guys have nearly recovered from their roofie'd nights of Las Vegas and being kidnapped, shot at, and chased by mobsters in Bangkok. The only member of the Wolfpack who's not content is Alan. Still lacking a sense of purpose, he has ditched his meds and given in to his natural impulses in a big way–until a personal crisis forces him to finally seek the help of his three best friends. With no bachelor party and no wedding, what could possibly go wrong? But when the Wolfpack hits the road, all bets are off. It is the epic conclusion to an odyssey of mayhem and bad decisions, in which the guys must finish what they started by going back to where it all began: Las Vegas. One way or another … it all ends here.

The small town of Pacashau, Georgia, has fallen on hard times, but the people are counting on the Divinity Church Choir to lift their spirits by winning the National Joyful Noise Competition. The choir has always known how to sing in harmony, but the discord between its two leading ladies now threatens to tear them apart. Their newly appointed director, Vi Rose Hill (Latifah), stubbornly wants to stick with their tried-and-true traditional style, while the fiery G.G. Sparrow (Parton) thinks tried-and-true translates to tired-and-old. Shaking things up even more is the arrival of G.G.'s rebellious grandson, Randy (Jeremy Jordan). Randy has an ear for music, but he also has an eye for Vi Rose's beautiful and talented daughter, Olivia (Keke Palmer). If these two strong-willed women can put aside their differences for the good of the people in their town, they–and their choir–may make the most joyful noise of all.

Mitch (Luke Wilson) returns home from a less-than-pleasant business trip one evening to discover his wife, Heidi (Juliette Lewis), involved in a ménage à trois with two blindfolded strangers. Feeling less than welcome at home after this, Mitch rents a house near the campus of a nearby college; two of Mitch's old college buddies, Beanie (Vince Vaughn) and Frank (Will Ferrell), stop by to cheer him up. They soon become regular guests at Mitch's place, despite the fact that Frank only recently wed Marissa (Perrey Reeves), while Beanie and his wife, Lara (Leah Remini), are busy with two kids. Beanie decides to throw a housewarming party for Mitch, and since Beanie sells audio equipment for a living, he's able to trick out the big bash with a massive PA system and an appearance by Snoop Dogg. Mitch soon finds he's the not-entirely-willing proprietor of the school's leading party spot, which raises the ire of Pritchard (Jeremy Piven), a dean at the college who was the target of Mitch, Frank, and Beanie's abuse when they were all students. Pritchard arranges to have Mitch's neighborhood zoned into a student housing district, but Beanie and Frank respond by forming a fraternity and making Mitch's home their headquarters. Mitch, however, is not enthusiastic about the idea, especially as he's trying to impress Nicole (Ellen Pompeo), a beautiful divorcee who is less than enchanted with Frank and Beanie's "party hearty" lifestyle.

Todd Snyder Men’s Spring 2019

Todd Snyder closed New York Fashion Week: Men’s on a high note, sending out a feel-good collection full of bright colors and a youthful attitude that he titled “The American Tourist.”
“I played a lot with a mix of sartorial and campy references,” he said backstage before the show, where truffle popcorn and beer was served.
The opening look set the tone for the collection: a yellow T-shirt with a photo of a Waffle House that was taken by folk rocker Gerry Beckley of the group America. A series, all shot by the musician, are to make their debut for spring.
Snyder, the king of collaborations, unveiled other partnerships at the show including a line of terry-cloth bucket hats with Kangol, high-top tie-dye sneakers with Novesta, and perhaps the most striking, archival Hawaiian prints from Reyn Spooner that he used most successfully on an updated suit. “It’s the modern leisure suit,” he said.
His longtime partnership with Champion was also on display in bomber jackets, paneled sweatshirts and underwear. It even appeared as a side stripe on a plaid patterned suit.
Another play on the Americana theme came with the introduction of a new logo — “Snyder’s” in retro block letters — that he used

Todd Snyder Men’s Fall 2018

Everything old is new again. Just ask Todd Snyder.
The designer closed the first day of New York Fashion Week: Men’s with what was arguably his finest collection to date. Snyder seamlessly blended an old-school sensibility with a totally modern aesthetic in a lineup that had an overarching romantic feel.
The opening look of an ultrathin, belted tweed coat over a denim jacket and jeans set the tone for a collection that was soft and full of nostalgia.
What started last season with more billowy proportions continued this time with an array of pleated pants, sack suits and shrunken school-boy sweaters.
The collection was also more colorful this time around, with muted pinks, brighter blues and grandfatherly yellows breathing new life into the preppy cardigans and fleece hoodies that also provided a chic collegiate touch.
Snyder’s longstanding partnership with Champion also moved into new territory this season with an update of the Fifties-era “running man” logo the designer emblazoned on the front of herringbone sweatshirts with matching joggers.
“It’s really an eclectic mix of different styles,” Snyder said of the vibe described in the show notes as “part aesthete, part athlete, part Savile Row rebel.”
And judging from the rousing ovation at the end of the show

Todd Snyder Men’s Spring 2018

Todd Snyder offered a “melting pot of fashion” in his spring collection, drawing references from around the world — Morocco, France and his own Iowa backyard.
“It’s a mish-mash of different looks,” he said backstage before his show for New York Fashion Week: Men’s on Monday night. “Active, military, sartorial.” Even his father’s propensity to wear black socks with shorts — “which always annoyed me, but now I’m doing it, too” — made an appearance.
In a show that featured a musical performance from Lewis Del Mar, those eclectic references were visible in a suit fashioned after an old French burlap coffee-bean bag, Marrakech-inspired multistripes in linen bomber jackets and a Mexican Baja white and olive hoodie.
But the big news came from a radical change in the silhouette. From oversize pleated pants, shorts and Japanese selvage jeans to softly constructed boxy-cut double-breasted suits, “the pants are much baggier,” he said. “And there are pleats everywhere. The proportion has changed a lot.”
The designer also showcased his long-standing collaboration with Champion by “resurrecting a few classics,” such as a sweater with a diagonal color-blocked design and logo T-shirts worn under blazers and top coats.
In past seasons, Snyder has been playing it safe, but with

Todd Snyder Men’s RTW Spring 2016

Todd Snyder took a trip to Capri for spring, pushing the lineup into very leisure-inspired territory with hibiscus-print shorts and safari jackets, soft linen drawstring pants and indigo terry cloth polos.

But the collection was not all fun and games. Snyder also offered up some business-appropriate cotton suits and sharp spring trenchcoats — a definite trend during the New York shows so far.
The show also featured pieces from the designer’s collaborations, such as faded tank tops and sweatshirts, a bomber blended with linen from his Champion line, and artisanal leather sandals from his Cole Haan association.

In both the main line and the collaborations, it’s obvious that Snyder has his finger on what the American man wants with this commercial and salable collection. But one wonders what else the designer might have up his sleeve if he took a few more chances.

Three men relive their carefree college years by killing off as many brain cells as possible in this over-the-top comedy. Old School director Todd Phillips knows more than a bit about the seamy side of fraternity life as director of the infamous unreleased documentary Frat House.

Todd Haynes at Cannes: New Film “Carol” Stuns With Elegance

I last saw Todd Haynes thirty years ago in a semiotics class at Brown on “Pastiche and Parody”. I remember him as the intent red-haired young man, always leaning forward, with two hands pressed on the desk, as he dialogued with professor Silverman about Baudrillard. He delivered his oral presentation on Genet with the same serious intensity.

2015-05-20-1432104725-5192815-toddhaynes.jpg

I glimpse him again, thirty years later, on the top terrace of the Cannes Palais, overlooking the Riviera. His new film Carol has just premiered here in Cannes to rave reviews. The red hair is now tinged with grey; the intensity has expanded into a relaxed grin. Perhaps the new jovial ease comes not only by the passing of decades, but by the phenomenal success of his film. Todd laughed heartily as he greeted journalists, who all enthused about the breathtaking beauty of his film, opining that it may win the great prize this year at Cannes.

For Carol, the story of a love affair between a young pretty shop clerk (Rooney Mara) and a wealthy unhappy housewife (Cate Blanchett), set in 1950s New York City, stuns with its sensuousness, reminding one of the Hollywood cinema of old, where the camera takes time with lingering shots on characters, turning them into stars. Based on a Patricia Highsmith novel The Price of Salt (1952), the story begins (after a flash-forward) with the timid young clerk spotting the wealthy commanding lady in a department store as the latter shops for a Christmas present for her daughter. We follow the clerk’s sensitive still eyes as she stares with rapture at the mink coat, the elegant gloves, the sweep of coiffed blonde hair. Desire–glamour–is born from the gaze. We too become absorbed in watching.

2015-05-20-1432104834-3263087-toddhaynesthetwomeeting.jpg

In fact, the gaze becomes the cinematic theme of the film. Acclaimed cameraman Ed Lachman films Therese, the shop clerk, with her eyes peering mournfully out a rainy window; he films her (after the two women have become friends) gazing obsessively at Carol’s gloved hands on a steering wheel, as the two take their first drive together. In turn, Carol–when the dynamics shift–stares longingly at Therese’s fleeting figure through the reflecting glass of a cab window. For the duration of the film, the two women alternately “look” at each other–their hands, their mouths, their eyes–with nothing short of obsession. This is desire, this is love.

2015-05-20-1432104779-5247655-toddhaynesCateatglass.jpg

It is a love that is forbidden: lesbianism in the 1950s. Therese herself does not even know what to think of her overwhelming feelings of desire. She queries her boyfriend: “is it possible to love….a woman?” The climax of the film is a run-away road trip, with the two women escaping from social constraints into their own romantic world, going from one hotel to another, much like the celebrated escape of Humbert Humbert and Lolita. Throughout, we have a sense of secretive simmering passion–and taboo.

It is clear that the movie carries a social-political message, about societal controls on people’s sexual intimacy, and the risks of choosing an alternative life style. Both women risk being ostracized–or worse–because of their affair. Yet what makes the movie outstanding is not the political message, but rather the alluring aesthetics of each shot: the snow falling on the wintry street; the landscape of Cate Blanchett’s emotionally charged face; the eerie quiet in Rooney Mara’s elegant eyes; the 1950s decor of Carol’s mansion; the browns and greys of Therese’s modest tenement apartment. The pace of the movie is quiet, pure, undisturbed by anything that is not essential to the story (and thankfully, as this is the 1950s, no cell phones, no texts, no “noise”). We are fixated on two characters, one story.

It is a movie that will remind many a spectator of the first time he or she fell in love.

But maybe it’s not so simple.

I asked Todd if it was that simple. Could it be that his semiotics background, back at Brown, informs theoretically the way he construes the “construction of desire” (a term we often discussed in class) and “the gaze”? In Highsmith’s novel, much is made of this “gaze” by the lower-class woman on the upper class.

Todd laughed –facetiously quoting an Irigaray feminist text we had read in class thirty years ago—and then immediately gave a serious (and unexpected) response.

“What is interesting to me about Highsmith’s novel is that it basically links the desiring subject to the criminal subject because both are overproductive minds. The criminal narrator of Highsmith’s Strangers on a Train is similar to Therese’s mind in The Price of Salt as both have the same furtive hyperactive quality. Here the crime is love, and love is illegal. Therese cannot find the words for her desire; it is beyond syntax. She cannot piece it together. She is butting up against language and meaning and what she knows to be possible [in her social sphere]. When the two women finally do make love, then the desire comes into form: it can be stated.”

Leaving the Derridean theory (quickly) aside, Todd turned to what seemed to be most at stake in this film for him: the shift of power from Carol, the wealthy middle-aged woman, to Therese, the enamoured petite young clerk.

“Carol is the emblem of the privileged class, a perfect manifestation of female glamour and elegance that disarms Therese and initially furthers her anxiety about who she is. Carol is a construct of Therese’s imagination. In this film, we are always in the point of view of the more amorous character: the disempowered person. We shoot through windows and glass, to make you think of the act of looking and looking back, with people positioned on either side of the glass. When we think of our love affairs, our most memorable ones are those that put you on the side of the weaker and desiring subject.”

I asked Todd why he, a gay male director, so often privileged the disempowered woman as the main character in his films, from his Barbie Doll Karen Carpenter to the paranoid allergic housewife in Safe.

“Stories about marginal women,” he explained. “Are more interesting than films about men; they contain the limits of social burdens; women’s lives are more burdened by society, in the choices they make, as they carry on the institutions of the family, satisfying men. There is less freedom in their lives. In films about men, you can pretend that these limits can be escaped [with heroic vanquishing stories] but not so much with women. Filming women allows me to show how we all share these restrictions.”

As for the wonderful road trip–which adds such sparkle to the film–this too has a political undertone:

“The road trip is essential to the novel and the film, in that it is the only place where we think we are free from the constraints of society.”

And yet the film has a fresh revolutionary undercurrent–and an exhilarating conclusion. The power dynamics between Carol and Therese eventually shift, as do as well their positions in society. As Todd noted: “Therese changes! She grows up, and by the end,” he laughed warmly. “She wears a full skirt!”

In fact, Therese, the disempowered girl, [warning: plot spoiler!] , becomes, by the end of the film, an established confident photographer, her success launched by the photos she has taken of Carol during their road trip, photos that frame her face and body, putting the glamour in perspective.

It is her gaze that now dominates.

Some critics have asserted that the film is appropriately called “Carol”, as Cate Blanchett’s acting is extraordinary, but for me, the film could have been called “Therese”, as I could watch the film over and over, just to observe her mysterious watching eyes.

Chuck Todd 2.0? Inside The Subtle Style Makeover Of NBC’s New Sunday Savior

It’s a good day to be Chuck Todd. The NBC stalwart was just named the new host of “Meet the Press.”

For Todd, it’s the promotion of a lifetime. The legendary Tim Russert brought Todd to NBC News in 2007, and Todd now steps into his mentor’s role.

We had many thoughts about, like, serious stuff when we found out that Todd was taking on this new challenge. But we also had many thoughts about Chuck Todd, Fashion Man, because we’ve been noticing some changes to his whole “style thing” over the past few months. If we were conspiracy-minded gossip-hounds, we’d say that Todd has been eyeing the coveted “MTP” chair and has upped his fashion game accordingly. And since we basically ARE conspiracy-minded gossip-hounds, we’ll just leave that there.

First, though, A Look Back. Todd wasn’t always the goateed griller we know today. C-SPAN tweeted this vintage shot from way back in 1997 earlier this week, following reports about Todd’s new role. (That hairless chin! That head of hair! Etc!) HuffPost style guru Rebecca Shapiro opines, “Looks at those spectacles!”

By 2007, he was basically the Todd we recognize today. The glasses were out, and the famed goatee was in. (Shapiro, however, dislikes the suit, which she described as “dull.”)

And there things stayed…until the past few months, that is.

The host has slimmed down lately. The photo on the left was taken in February and the one on the right in June. Looking good Chuck!

Let’s take a closer look at Todd throughout the past few months. Here he was last fall.

Fast forward to May.

Todd looked more trim and tanned this summer, compared to several months ago. Here are screenshots from “The Daily Rundown” in July and August, respectively. Also we’ve noticed some definite goatee-scaping — everything’s more nice and neat. Says Shapiro, “it’s less ‘reporter on the run’ and more ‘anchor fancypants.'”

Not convinced? Well, one thing is for sure. We’re definitely not in 2011 anymore.
