What It’s Like To Quit A Job, Travel To Another Country, And Search For Something Deeper

Reshma, a young Indian-American woman from Chicago, says she always felt like something was missing in her chaotic life.

“I just go to work, come home, eat dinner by myself, wake up the next morning and do it all over again. I don’t think God meant for us to live this way,” explains Reshma, 32, in the video above.

So she quit her job, said goodbye to her family, and traveled to her spiritual homeland, India, in hopes of finding a deeper connection to herself, to other human beings, and to her religion.

Reshma’s search took her to the banks of the Ganges River for the Kumbh Mela, where every 12 years, millions of pilgrims flock to the river to wash away their sins and purify their souls. While she was there, Reshma says something extraordinary happened, which she reveals on OWN’s upcoming documentary series, “Belief.” Check local listings here.

“I had seen the ‘Planet Earth’ years ago on Discovery, and I wanted to be able to create for the spirit what ‘Planet Earth’ was for our physical world,” Oprah Winfrey says of her new series, which premieres Sunday, Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. “Reshma was one of those stories. There are a lot of people who feel disconnected from themselves, who feel like their life is not whole.”

For Reshma, the search was worthwhile. “I found connection,” she explains. “I really was looking for a sense of peace, and compassion, and love and connection to other human beings, and through that, I found the connection to myself I was looking for.”

A medieval man with an uncertain destiny, Llywelyn, the Prince of Wales, faces treachery and deceit at the hands of friends and foes alike … A modern woman with a troubled past, Meg’s life is in tatters when she slips through time and into medieval Wales … Only by working together can Meg and Llywelyn navigate the shifting allegiances that threaten the very existence of Wales–and create their own history that defies the laws of time. Daughter of Time is a prequel to the After Cilmeri Series, and is appropriate for young teens to adults. Other books in this series include Footsteps in Time, Winds of Time, Prince of Time, Crossroads in Time, Children of Time, Exiles in Time, Castaways in Time, Ashes of Time, and Warden of Time. **A note from the author: I am so happy to be able to share with you this prequel to the After Cilmeri series. I created Footsteps in Time and Prince of Time first, and only wrote Daughter of Time after so many readers wanted to know how the story began. Meg's journey is continued in Footsteps in Time and Winds of Time, a novella that is meant to be a companion to the series. Happy reading!

It was my daughter Dixie’s first beach vacation, and nothing is better than the waters at Turks and Caicos. It’s warm and still and you can see the fish swimming past your toes. She absolutely loved it.

You need your passport to visit Turks and Caicos. It’s such a short flight that it’s easy to forget.

I would put my daughter down for a nap every day after lunch—the hotel has a health-food menu that is delicious, but they have good old-fashioned hamburgers and shepherd’s pie too—and nestle into the beach hammock and read. It was hidden away under some trees right next to the ocean.

Angelina Jolie Pitt Steps Out in the Best Shoe for Summer Travel

Angelina Jolie

The Cannes Film Festival might have rejected flats but the fashion community, and everyone else, still loved the wardrobe staple. And with A-listers like Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Lawrence, and Aymeline Valade sporting them everywhere from the street to the red carpet, the practical shoe is getting a decidedly fancy upgrade. Arriving at London Heathrow with son Maddox, actress Angelina Jolie cut a lean figure in a sleek all-black look. but it was her subtle nude slippers that stole the show.

While air travel is never easy or enjoyable, Jolie Pitt wears the ideal traveling ensemble in shades of black, adding contrast with a weathered Louis Vuitton keepall. The jacket is perfect for boarding passes and any trinkets belonging to the little Jolie Pitts, while the trousers keep a clean line. To fast-track your way through security, slip on streamlined skimmers like these; they’ll make your look first class in a heartbeat.

10 Well-Traveled Women on What You Need in Your Travel Wardrobe

I love pretty much everything about travel… except packing. There are so many questions. What will the weather do? How do I know what I’ll need? What won’t get wrinkled? Someone must have this figured out, right?

It turns out a few people do. I asked a bunch of well-traveled women from around the U.S. and abroad to share one of their essential travel pieces. And voila! Their suggestions make up a complete wardrobe that goes places. Check ’em off, ladies:

Trendy walking boots
Seattle-based photographer and travel blogger Richele Kuhlmann says she’s long been on the hunt for her own version of “world walkers” — hip boots that are comfortable for long sojourns in both urban and rural settings. “I finally hit the jackpot with Teva’s De La Vina boots,” she says. One of her favorite features is their heavy grip rubber soles, which are rugged and durable but not clunky. She also loves their fashion versatility, because “they look effortlessly great with whatever I’m wearing — leggings, skirts, jeans, even cargo pants.”

A wrap dress
“I always pack a wrap dress,” says Dawn Duncan, owner of Colorado-based Yellowbright Inc. “I love black, but I also like patterns and brighter colors.” There’s so much versatility, because they can be worn day into night, dressed down with sandals or flats, and then dressed for up evening by adding jewelry, a scarf, heels, and a clutch.

Wraps, scarfs, and sarongs
Pretty much every woman I talked with suggested these versatile accessories. Tara Russell, founder of San Francisco-based Three Month Visa Coaching and Consulting says she always packs a wrap in light wool or cashmere “because it’s a multi-tasking powerhouse that can serve as a head covering when visiting religious sites or as a blanket for chilly plane or train rides. In a pinch, it can even be used to carry things home from the market.”

Similarly, Aussie Anny Reed never goes anywhere without a Stampato cotton sarong. “I have several in different colors, some with beautiful fine patterns,” she says. “My favorite right now is dusky pink.” The diversity is amazing: She’s used them as sheets, blankets, towels, something to sit on, and as a picnic blanket.

Cotton leggings
Because she likes to be ready for anything, Take Your Big Trip blogger Kristin Zibell always packs black leggings for travel. “They can serve as tights, pants, and pajamas, and they roll up easily in any pack and don’t show dirt,” she says. She particularly likes this pair by Hue, because they’re thick enough for a warm layer and light enough for warmer, humid climates. Also, bringing leggings to more conservative countries like India or Turkey is smart, because they cover your legs, extending your wardrobe of shorter dresses into outfits.

Ballet flats
Lavinia Spalding, author and series editor of the Travelers’ Tales “The Best Women’s Travel Writing,” says she loves comfy and cute shoes when she travels, and ballet flats are her go-to. “They have enough padding to be comfortable walking on cobblestones, but they’re also cute enough for impromptu salsa dancing,” she says. She’s recommends Tsubo’s Honnor or Tieks’ Ballet Flat, but also notes that if you’re on a tight budget, you can simply look around locally for something that fits.

A little black dress
Singer/songwriter Gabriella Coniglio never leaves home without a stretchy short black dress. “I can wear it on its own, over my swimsuit at the beach or hiking, or layered over and under other clothes, depending on the temperature, event, and modesty required,” she says. Her go-to dress is one she picked up at a thrift shop more than eight years ago. This is encouraging for the budget-conscious traveler. Start searching!

A skort
For the woman who wants the best of both worlds–the timeless style of a skirt and the practicality of shorts–artist Faye Augustine suggests having a few skorts on hand. “I can’t get by without mine,” she says. She especially loves the many options available at L.L. Bean. And it’s true, if you look through their selection, they have skorts for pretty much everything: fitness, trail, urban sightseeing, and water sports.

Rugged sandals
For anyone who’s embarking on an off-the-beaten-path adventure, Carolyn Songin, a yoga teacher and concierge who lives in remote Mexico, recommends breathable sandals, especially those made by Chaco. “These sandals are perfect for walking in my day-to-day life, and also for hiking,” she says. She loves their great ankle and foot support “with a little style.”

Laurie Weed, writer, editor, and campervan enthusiast, also recommends, the Keen Newport H2. “My feet, which are wide, feel supported by them,” she says. “They can go up the mountain, to the beach, or into the river; getting a little wet or even a lot wet makes no difference to them.” And when they start to stink, as all sport sandals will, you can just throw them in a washer or sinkful of suds, and after an hour or so in the sun, they’re good to go again.

Photo Travel Diary of a Sustainable Designer

2015-04-01-1427926861-4256986-IMG_8938.jpg

Sustainable designer Laura Siegel shares her journey in becoming conscientious about clothing from backpacking all over the world and finding that the best talent and inspiration lies within each unique destination. Check out some of her personal photos of India.

When did you decide to become a sustainable clothing designer?
After I completed the BFA Fashion program at Parsons, I took some time and backpacked through India and Southeast Asia. It was through these travels that I encountered artisans who have been practicing ancient crafts that have been passed down through generations. With almost every artisan and all the locals I encountered, I did not speak their language, and they didn’t speak mine. So it was through the craft that we communicated.

2015-04-01-1427896867-9680122-sasa04912.jpg

That’s so cool you backpacked and returned with a sustainable start up idea that’s sending a super powerful message. Where did you get the idea to work with two families on your collection?

I decided to start working with Namori’s family for several reasons. For one, he [ the leader of the household] is an extremely talented and skilled weaver. He was looking for work.. So far, by working with him, we have seen really great results and growth for his family and other weavers (ie. that he has began to employ due to the increased workload he has began to receive!)

2015-04-01-1427896813-9408250-WomanembroideringforleisureinBangladesh.JPG

Where are your weavers located? Have you picked up any weaving techniques?
I work with weavers in Kutch and eastern India, as well as Bolivia. The more time I spend with each artisan, the more I’m able to immerse myself in their craft. Though I must admit, the craftsmanship and skill of the weavers are far beyond anything I could ever do myself. It’s something that they’ve inherited from their lineage, something they’ve grown up learning. It’s such an important part of their heritage.
Aside from weavers, I get to work with artisans from all around the world, ranging from Kenya, Laos, Bolivia, Peru and India.

2015-04-01-1427927165-7715967-preppingweftforhandweaving.jpg

What’s the material process like, are they working with material they are already familiar with?
A lot of women throw out sarees (that they buy in the market for cheap). We then take these materials, which are often synthetic, and repurpose them by putting them through a labour-intensive process to turn them into something completely new. While the repurposed material we work with is inexpensive, the labour that goes into converting them into a new textile, into a well-crafted fabric, makes it worth something much more than when we found it.

2015-04-01-1427897272-200141-IMG_86791.jpg
Interesting! What’s your design process like?

I tend to first look at the skills of the artisans I work with, combined with what fibres can be locally sourced (meaning, local in relation to the artisan). So it’s really the resources that are around that I try to work with.

I spend a lot of time with each community, and each individual artisan, developing the textiles and colours for the season, and learning new techniques. I then collect and look at all the fabrics from all the communities involved in the season, before engineering the design layouts and garment shapes.

2015-04-01-1427897313-5538292-IMG_8758.jpg

You mentioned that it’s difficult for you to follow a plant-based/sustainable lifestyle? For one, I’ll give you credit for the recycled paper used for your collection look book-very chic! Tell me about your plant-based ethos?
It’s difficult to fully realize how anyone’s lifestyle really affects our world. Or rather, when not all information is made 100 percent transparent to consumers, it’s tough to make informed decisions. It really requires a lot of research, time and dedication to source the products that do provide that information. The food we eat, the clothes we wear… everything has a story behind it. No matter what it is, everything we buy a journey it’s been through to the consumer. And to be a responsible consumer, you really need to think about that journey — the lives that have been affected in the making of this product, the environmental impact of it all. More products need to have this transparency. You want to feel like you are voting with every dollar, and it is hard to do that when the information isn’t there.

If you could wear a few pieces from the line like everyday, what would you choose? I really like the knitwear for festival season!
You’re right! I would probably chose a fringe sweater, harem pants and kaftan.

Okay, last question (since I’m obsessed with adventurous traveling), what are your must-have items when backpacking through Europe?
Kaftan, Belt, Film camera ( with/ Film), Sketchbook/notebook (plus microns-my pen of choice), Flashlight, A map of beaches and fruit farms, Only 1 pair of shoes (most likely a form of sandal), My MEC Backpack (it’s the Canadian in me- I’ve had it for 8 years and it’s going no where).

Kate Auletta, HuffPost Senior Travel Editor, Shares Her Busy Mom's Trick To Faking Sleep

For the month of May, HuffPost Style is turning the camera’s focus on fabulous moms and moms-to-be in our Beauty Street Style series. We’re kicking things off with HuffPost Senior Travel Editor Kate Auletta, whose honesty on what beauty means to her as a mother is truly eye-opening.

Each morning Kate walks into the offices, she’s wearing the biggest and brightest smile. We can never tell that this mother of a beautiful baby boy is short on sleep. While Kate is all about looking natural, we got her to share her best beauty secrets.

“Before I was a mama, I was much more obsessed with making sure I looked put together every day. Now, I’m more obsessed with making sure I don’t look super sleepy,” she explained.

Kate dabs on Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage under-eye concealer to look well-rested and refreshed, and she grooms her brows with CoverGirl Professional Natural Lash Clear Mascara. The secret to her hydrated skin? Oh, just one of our favorite face creams.

But even Kate recognizes that she doesn’t have it pulled together all the time.

She told us, “I often get the ‘How do you it?’ question from well-meaning friends. The answer, in short, is that I don’t and all us mamas are doing the best we know how to keep it together enough to get through the day. I carried a healthy, 9-pound baby to term. I deserve to smile at myself when I look in the mirror.”

Keep smiling, Kate!
