Dior Makes Big U.S. Push With Meatpacking District Pop-up Store

PARIS — Dior’s latest push into the U.S. market spans the online world and the physical one — the latter complete with a menagerie of toy animals that look as if they might stampede into the French brand’s eclectic new pop-up in Manhattan.
The temporary store opened on Monday in the city’s Meatpacking District, offering a complete selection of the French fashion house’s offer for women, men and children.
The pop-up coincides with the arrival of Dior’s U.S. e-commerce site, which is launching on Nov. 28 with a capsule collection designed by men’s creative director Kim Jones in collaboration with U.S. artist Kaws, and will be expanded in February to all other categories.
“New York is very important for us. In the U.S., Dior is strong, but I think that we need further awareness,” said Pietro Beccari, chief executive officer of Dior. “I believe that this idea of the Meatpacking [District pop-up] is coming at the right time.”
Expected to operate for four months, the pop-up is divided into rooms featuring products that will rotate as new merchandise comes on stream. Beccari compared the space to the Marché aux Puces in Paris, which gathers antique dealers offering everything from vintage clothes to Art Deco furniture

Australian fashion labels, many of which are in the spotlight as Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, tours the antipodes, have long been popular in Southern California, where the climate and beach culture mirror the land of Oz.
Spell & The Gypsy Collective, the 10-year-old contemporary brand started by sisters Isabella Pennefather and Elizabeth Abegg, opened its first stand-alone retail space in the U.S., a pop-up at 1108 Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, Calif. Open through Nov. 25, the shop has attracted cult lovers of the brand, some of whom traveled from as far away as Florida and Canada just to shop.

“Because we’re slow fashion, we don’t make too many pieces so they tend to sell out very quickly,” said Pennefather, who started out in 2008 making jewelry that she sold at the open-air market in Byron Bay, Australia. When her sister, Lizzy, came on board a few years later, they expanded into clothing and e-commerce, and the business grew from there.

WearingIrish NYC Helps Ireland-Based Designers Make U.S. Connections

Ten designers from Ireland hoping to break into the American market, came to New York this week for the “WearingIrish NYC” event, a new platform for promoting Irish fashion.
They also came to break stereotypes of Irish design being mired in tradition and lacking modernity. Tweeds and knitwear are iconic to the region, though organizers of WearingIrish NYC say the participating designers are adept at both giving “a nod” to Ireland’s heritage and maintaining a contemporary appeal.
Selected from 170 qualified candidates, the winners included Aine, Alison Conneely, Bláithín Ennis, De Bruir, Inner Island, Jennifer Rothwell, Natalie B. Coleman, Sands and Hall, The Tweed Project and Triona. Each showed their fall 2018 collections to American retail buyers, editors, business and fashion leaders at WearingIrish NYC, a mini trade show at the Bank of Ireland, one of the sponsors of the three-day event, that also featured panels and networking. None of the designers currently sell American retailers, but some have sold products online to American consumers.
“We are firmly rooted in tradition and we work with weavers on the West Coast of Ireland. But our design philosophy is filtered through a modernist lens. Our cuts are very contemporary,” said Conneely, who utilizes Donegal tweed and Connemara lace in her

La Bouche Rouge to Make U.S. Debut at The Webster

Eco-chic lipstick line La Bouche Rouge is landing in the U.S. via The Webster.
An exclusive lipstick shade of pink designed by The Webster founder Laure Hériard Dubreuil will debut at the trend-setting Miami-based concept shop’s SoHo location on Monday.
The grapefruit hue matches the pink tones consistent with The Webster’s branding aesthetic and signature pink flamingo-emblazoned logo, but is meant to adjust to the wearer’s pH levels, imparting only a sheer tint on the lips. It was customized using La Bouche Rouge’s patented technology that uses micronized pigments and an artificial-intelligence algorithm to match shades found in objects or photos — including those found on a client’s smartphone.
La Bouche Rouge is a sustainable luxury cosmetics brand founded by L’Oréal veteran Nicolas Gerlier. Paris-based Gerlier launched the line — it now consists of 12 lipsticks — in France in October with the support of LVMH’s cosmetology research division. Formulations are clean, containing no endocrine-disrupting ingredients or allergens, and each tube comes in a refillable, plastic-free capsule made of tanned calfskin leather. Ezra Petronio serves as creative director.
It is not often that Dubreuil stocks a beauty brand in one of her stores. “I like to do it when it has a lot of meaning to

EXCLUSIVE: Mugler Fashion Names U.S. Designer as Artistic Director

PARIS — Score another win for behind-the-scenes talent: Mugler has named little-known American designer Casey Cadwallader as its new artistic director of women’s ready-to-wear, succeeding David Koma, who is leaving the house after four years at the helm.
Cadwallader, whose appointment was effective Dec. 1, joins the French fashion house from Acne Studios, where he was head designer of women’s pre-collections.
The 38-year-old studied architecture at Cornell University and has 17 years of experience, including positions as design director of rtw and accessories at Narciso Rodriguez and director of design at J.Mendel. He has also held positions at Loewe and Tse.
“The Clarins Group is very happy to welcome Casey Cadwallader to Mugler,” said Sandrine Groslier, chief executive officer of Clarins Fragrance Group and Mugler fragrances and fashion.
“His determination and unique sensitivity to Mugler’s artistic and experimental heritage will enable us to pursue the renewal of the house in the long term. We are confident that his personal vision and talent will position Mugler among the most sought-after avant-garde fashion brands of today,” she added.

Tomi Lahren’s Struggle U.S. Flag Halloween Costume Gets Shredded On Twitter

Tomi Lahren is either a troll or really believes some of her Right Wing bombast, so much to the point that she’s draped herself in the American Flag as a Halloween get-up. While Lahren professes to be all about America and the country first, her outfit choice may actually violate a stated law regarding and folks on Twitter are letting her have it.

CBS News writes:

The Instagram photo shows Lahren wearing a star spangled cape-like garment as part of an outfit that included a red tutu, a flag themed fanny pack and a top bearing President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan.

Some accused the Fox News contributor of being disrespectful of the flag, including Trump administration critic Keith Olbermann, who claimed her costume was in violation of U.S. flag code. Olbermann wrote in a tweet, “The flag should never be used as wearing apparel…”

Donald Trump Jr. shot back with a picture of Olbermann draped in a flag on the cover of his new book. He tweeted, “Life is hard; it’s even harder when you’re stupid.”

Since the photo was posted just days ago, discussion about Lahren’s choice, and the statements made in the caption have been debated and bandied about. We collected some of the sharpest criticisms of Tomi Lahren’s outfit choice below and on the following pages.

Porter magazine is bringing its Incredible Women List of 50 entries, which was published last month in its winter issue, to life with two events in the U.S. Tonight editor in chief Lucy Yeomans will host a question-and-answer with Misty Copeland, who was featured on the list, in New York and on Nov. 1 the magazine’s second annual Incredible Woman Gala will take place in Los Angeles at NeueHouse, hosted by Yeomans and Donna Langley, chairman of Universal Pictures. The store is located at 170 Mercer Street in SoHo. The fine jewelry brand, which has a cult following among some celebrities and influencers, especially among men, is known for its signature, custom-beaded bracelets. The company plans to open two additional international flagship stores over the next three years. The additional stores will include one location in London and the other in Paris.
Mikkel Kornerup, chief executive officer and cofounder, said of the New York site, “The U.S., our business partners and collectors here, have been indispensable in the development of Shamballa Jewels throughout the years, and therefore, it was very natural for us to choose this market as the first in our efforts within retail expansion.”
Kornerup’s cofounder is his brother Mads.
The line blends ancient Eastern philosophy and Nordic design. The new SoHo store evokes the look of an Eastern temple, and includes as the centerpiece a floating golden mandala with a hanging lingam. Hong Kong-based resortwear designer Marie France Van Damme is set to open her ninth boutique, and first in the U.S., on Sept. 25 in Beverly Hills. Located in the Peninsula hotel, there are two stores side-by-side totaling 464 square feet.

The Only Way to Fix Healthcare Insurance in the U.S.

Our system of government has been amazingly robust for hundreds of years, but it fails when you have these two conditions:

1. An issue is too complicated for the public to understand.

2. Big companies are willing to distort the system for profits.

That situation describes the healthcare debate going on in the United States right now. Our undersized brains can’t grasp all the nuances and implications of any particular healthcare plan. And when our brains are confused, we default to our biases (usually party loyalty) or to whatever metric is simple enough to understand. With healthcare, the one metric that matters is how many people will be covered compared to Obamacare. If the Republican plan covers more people, it will pass. If not, it will fail.

Sure, Republicans will argue that the CBO projections are inaccurate. They will argue that comparing a mandatory plan with an optional one is comparing apples to oranges. They will be right about all of that, but it is irrelevant to the outcome. People will look at the number of people covered and stop there. So any Republican bill that covers fewer people than Obamacare is dead on arrival. That’s where we are now. And we don’t have a system of government that can fix this situation.

But what we do have is an active citizenry and social media. That’s a better system for designing a healthcare system. I’ll describe one way to go about it.

Some of you are aware of Github, a company that lets software developers contribute bits of code that are made available to all other Github users. Github is a big deal, and software developers almost can’t live without it. Perhaps it is time to build a similar system for fixing health insurance in the U.S.

Imagine a website where any interested party can contribute suggestions for improving any individual element of healthcare in the United States, with a focus on lowering costs while improving outcomes. Perhaps you have an idea about lowering drug prices, and I have an idea about online doctors. We submit our ideas, and the Github-for-healthcare users gets to improve on them or ignore them. The system would allow users to rank the ideas. In time, citizens could develop multiple ideas for every element of healthcare. Citizen volunteers could eventually create up to three plans and present them to Congress for a vote.

I’ll get the ball rolling here by framing the problem as an innovation challenge, not a cost issue.

I think Congress can pass a bill that overspends in the short run so long as it comes with a plan (or path) to greater coverage than Obamacare. In my picture above, you see the growing gap between future health care costs and tax revenue. That growing gap can only be closed by some combination of innovation, cutting regulations, improving competition, and improving prevention. Let’s call that a “moon shot” challenge. We don’t know how to get there right now, but Americans are good at figuring out this sort of thing.

My suggestion for getting a healthcare bill passed is for Republicans to create a credible story for how they will cover more people than Obamacare, at a reasonable cost. And the best way to make that case is with visual persuasion, starting with this sort of simple graph and extending to images of startups that promise to lower medical costs.

At the moment, Paul Ryan and the Republicans are trying to sell their plan with facts, concepts, details, and logical arguments. That won’t work. You need an aspirational story about how to get to better coverage than Obamacare via American ingenuity. Everything else is just noise.

I don’t mind letting Congress take its best shot at improving healthcare. But realistically, they can’t. They are not the right form of government for this sort of complexity.

Perhaps citizens can do what congress could not.

You might enjoy reading my book because it will make you healthier. (True story, according to my readers.)

Bench/Body Seeking a Foothold in U.S.

Bench/Body is hoping to aggressively extend its reach in the American market.

Ben Chan, the brand’s founder and a Filipino entrepreneur, said after 30 years establishing the Bench brand in Asia and the Middle East, he’s ready to make a mark in America.
“We’re in Guam and San Francisco,” he said, “but we’re not very prominent.”
Chan said he’d been contemplating for a while how to move into the U.S., and decided “rather than put up a lot of brick-and-mortar stores, which would be harder, we’re targeting online.”
Bench/Body is the underwear and intimate apparel offering under the Bench brand. In its home country, Bench is a successful retailer that sells men’s and women’s apparel, fragrances, housewares, snacks and other lifestyle products.
During its show, Bench/Body showed a variety of underwear in basic solids and prints in briefs, boxers and boxer-briefs for men and bikinis and bras for women. CAMBRIDGE, MA—Saying their findings pertained to every denomination of banknote, researchers at Harvard University released a study Friday confirming that the majority of paper currency in the United States has been in direct contact with at least one financial executive’s nude body at some point during its circulation. “Our data suggest that, for any given piece of U.S. legal tender, there is a 64 percent chance it has touched a portion of a Wall Street CEO or CFO’s naked flesh, likely when the executive gleefully rolled their nude body around in a large pile of money or dumped a bucket of bills over their head and let the currency cascade over their bare skin,” said professor of economics Robert Barro, noting that several dozen of the $ 10 bills his team randomly tested contained traces of DNA from every executive-level officer and board member at Goldman Sachs …

PALO ALTO, CA—Explaining that even the most well-meaning criticism can lead to adverse repercussions, a study released Thursday by researchers at Stanford University has found that berating the U.S. education system has only caused it to fall further behind its international peers. “We often feel compelled to point out flaws and shortcomings when we’re trying to help our nation achieve its goals, but our research shows that criticizing a struggling institution like the United States education system actually lowers its confidence and causes it to perform even more poorly,” said the study’s lead author, Julie Ostel, who noted that authorities’ tendency to harp on the country’s substandard math and science skills was correlated with steady declines in math and science test scores. “People might think they’re helping when they highlight the educational deficits of our school systems by comparing them to academic standouts like …

Ahead Of Pope’s U.S. Visit, Survey Finds Many Catholics Disagree With Church On LGBT Families

Just weeks ahead of Pope Francis’ visit to the United States for the World Meeting of Families, a major international Catholic festival that kicks off Sept. 21 in Philadelphia, a new survey shows that many Catholics are widely more accepting than church hierarchy of families led by parents who are gay, unmarried, single or divorced.

Nine in 10 Catholic Americans say that a family led by a mother and a father is an “ideal situation,” according to the Pew Research Center’s report, which was released Wednesday. At the same time, nearly half of Catholics say that children being raised by an unmarried couple is “acceptable and as good as any other arrangement,” while more than 4 in 10 Catholics say the same of gay and lesbian couples who raise kids.

Francis, who will address an estimated 1.5 million people during a World Meeting of Families Mass in Philadelphia, is expected to speak frequently about Catholic views of the importance of the family during Masses, speeches and high-level meetings that also will take him to Washington, D.C., and New York.

While the pope has made several friendly gestures toward LGBT people, including his famous “who am I to judge” remarks on gay priests, he has also spoken out against efforts to “redefine the very institution of marriage” and has warned of “ideological colonization that tries to destroy the family.” In October, Francis and high-level bishops will gather at the Vatican for the church’s synod on the family, which will likely address divorce and LGBT Catholics.

Speaking at the annual conference of the Religion Newswriters Association in Philadelphia, where Pew revealed the survey results, Pew Associate Director of Research Greg Smith said Saturday that he was “struck by the high level of dissent” from church teachings by self-identified Catholics, who are “very accepting of nontraditional families.”

“Catholic opinions look an awful lot like U.S. opinions as a whole” on issues such as sexuality and marriage, Smith said.

At the same time, he said, Catholics are “also quite loyal to the church despite any misgivings” about its positions on hot-button issues. Seven in 10 said they could never leave the church, “no matter what.” Close to 6 in 10 also said abortion is a sin. Greater than half said that devotion to Mary and receiving sacraments, such as communion, are “essential” to being Catholic.

There are “major differences between Catholics who attend Mass regularly and those who do not,” Smith said. Catholics who attend Mass at least once a week are much more likely to agree with church positions on sexuality, marriage and other controversial issues.

Pew’s report on the survey noted that although it was conducted before the Vatican’s June 18 release of the pope’s encyclical on human ecology and climate change — a topic he’s expected to highlight during speeches to Congress and the United Nations — “Pope Francis may have a difficult time persuading Catholics in the U.S. to adopt his philosophy about excess and his focus on the environment.”

Six in 10 Catholics told the organization that helping the poor is essential to being Catholic, yet just half gave the same response regarding combating climate change.

“Catholics are divided on the question of whether it is sinful to spend money on luxuries without also giving to the poor, but large majorities say it is not a sin to live in a house larger than needed or to use energy without concern for the impact on the environment,” the report said.

The survey, which asked questions of 5,122 adult Americans, including 1,016 Catholics, was conducted between May 5 and June 7 with a 3.5 percentage point margin of error among Catholics.

Tmall Promotion Underscores Heightened Competition in China For U.S. Brands

DEALS, DEALS, DEALS: Tmall.com created an online frenzy with its latest blowout featuring more than 1,000 fashion brands.
The apparel promotion, held twice a year — one for spring and another for fall — this time around boasts a number of brands exclusive to Tmall.com, including Timberland, Decathlon and Zara.
The retailer sweetened the deal to customers with a same-day shipping option, aided by participating stores that will send items purchased online to a customer’s home.
It’s part of a larger strategy to bridge the online and off-line worlds, said a spokeswoman with Tmall.com parent Alibaba Group.
“That’s a very important strategy for Alibaba Group,” the spokeswoman said. “You have a lot of shoppers sometimes when they order online, they want to go in stores and get a sense of the look and feel of something.”
So customers shopping in-store, can make a purchase online with the scan of a QR code or schedule to have product seen in-store delivered to their homes. The option is available in more than 10 cities.
It’s another point of distinction for the online retailer as competition remains fierce to bring U.S. brands to the Chinese consumer.
The sale — running through Wednesday — comes on the heels of Alibaba’s announcement this

The U.S. And Chile Got The UN Security Council To Talk LGBT Rights

WASHINGTON — The most powerful body at the United Nations on Monday had its first ever conversation about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues.

A group of speakers — including two gay Middle Eastern survivors of anti-LGBT persecution by the Islamic State militant group, as well as U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson and an advocate for global LGBT equality — addressed an informal gathering of top diplomats whose countries sit on the U.N. Security Council.

The United States and Chile co-sponsored the event, which was unprecedented for the Security Council, a number of whose member states are notoriously intolerant of LGBT people. The event’s organizers, mindful of the diplomatic sensitivities that accompany discussions of LGBT issues, classified the event as an Arria-formula meeting – a type of unofficial, confidential and non-mandatory gathering of Security Council members.

Thirteen of the 15 current Security Council member states attended Monday’s meeting, a U.N. diplomat in attendance told The Huffington Post. Angola and Chad were the only countries that skipped the event.

Samantha Power, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., launched the event by acknowledging its groundbreaking nature.

“Today we are making U.N. history,” Power told the attendees. “This is the first time in history that the Council has held a meeting on the victimization of LGBT persons. It is the first time we are saying, in a single voice, that it is wrong to target people because of their sexual orientation and gender identity. It is a historic step. And it is, as we all know, long overdue.”

Referring to the Islamic State group’s widely publicized targeting of LGBTQ residents of Iraq and Syria, Power told the diplomats that “we are coming together as a Security Council to condemn these acts, to demand they stop, and to commit to one day bringing the perpetrators to justice. That unified condemnation matters.”

A gay man from Iraq, who addressed the Security Council members by phone using a pseudonym, had previously told The New York Times that he “hadn’t been breathing” for weeks as he tried to escape the Islamic State militants who took over his hometown.

The other man, a Syrian named Subhi Nahas, had faced threats from both the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian affiliate of al Qaeda, Power told the Security Council gathering.

Power pointed out that it’s not only extremist groups like the Islamic State that target LGBT individuals in these countries. Both men had faced discrimination and threats from Iraqis and Syrians not linked to the Islamic State or to Jabhat an-Nusra, she said.

“While the targeting of LGBT individuals in the region appears to have worsened as ISIL’s power has grown, such violence and hatred existed well before the group’s dramatic rise, and that violence and hatred extends far beyond ISIL’s membership,” Power said, using the Obama administration’s preferred name for the Islamic State group. “Condemning ISIL’s violent and systematic targeting of LGBT individuals is the easiest step we can take today. Because while today’s session is focused on the crimes against LGBT persons committed by ISIL, we know the scope of this problem is much broader.”

“The effort to defend the equal rights of LGBT persons must also be waged within every one of our countries, even those where important progress has been made — and that includes in the United States,” she continued. “For just as this year we have made tremendous strides in advancing LGBT rights in the United States, we are under no illusion that the work is finished. Every one of our countries can and must do more to advance these rights domestically.”

The U.N. Security Council comprises 15 countries. Five of them, including the U.S., are permanent members, and two of those permanent member states, Russia and China, have received international criticism for their track records on LGBT rights. The current group of 10 non-permanent members includes LGBT-friendly countries like Chile and New Zealand, but also countries like Nigeria, where same-sex couples can be imprisoned for up to 14 years.

Power told the Times that the U.S. hopes to get LGBT rights “into the DNA” of the U.N.

That way, she said, “when you’re talking about minorities or vulnerable groups, you would always have L.G.B.T. people included.”

Communion Music Announces U.S. Residency Tour Featuring Conrad Sewell, Freedom Fry, and Clara-Nova

2015-08-18-1439941982-4626889-communionresidency.jpg

Though summer is coming to an end and festival season is dying down, music junkies needn’t worry as fall will bring a new season with plenty of music. The artist-led music organization, Communion, announces their fall U.S. residency tour which will be visiting 11 cities across the country and showcasing multiple genres along with established and emerging talent. The touring September artists will include Freedom Fry, Clara-Nova and Conrad Sewell, who sang on Kygo’s track “Firestone” and will soon be releasing his debut album. Notable acts of past residency tours include Walk The Moon, Catfish And The Bottlemen, Magic Man, Sturgill Simpson, Vacationer, Rubblebucket and Bear’s Den.

Communion Music was founded in London by Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons, Kevin Jones of Bear’s Den and producer Ian Gimble in 2006. Created in the basement bar of Notting Hill Arts Club, the crew’s network of musicians quickly grew alongside their organization. Their nine years of existence has seen a meteoric rise in success having released records for major artists such as Ben Howard, Gotye, Michael Kiwanuka, Tennis, Nick Mulvey, Willy Mason, Rubblebucket, Matthew and the Atlas, Bad Suns, Deap Vally, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Bear’s Den, Daughter and many more.

Essentially the Communion Residency is the oldest aspect of what we do at Communion. The idea is to host a monthly party where we highlight a handful of our favorite new and breaking artists, introducing them to a group of open-minded music enthusiasts, audience members, other musicians, record industry executives and the rest! We keep the lineup eclectic, with the hope that there really is something for everyone, but my favorite stories over the past 9 years have been when people have bought a ticket to check one thing out and come away loving three artists they’d never heard of, or never imagined would be their cup of tea!

As far as how it all ties into what we’re trying to achieve in the big picture sense, I guess this residency platform provides a platform, both for international artists to grow a U.S. audience for the first time, but also local artists to actually get noticed amongst all of the noise that exists out there these days. I hope we can help discover and launch the career of the next great band to come out of Louisville or Atlanta or Boston. And they may well not be an overnight sensation, or particularly hype friendly, but we’re building structures that don’t rely on any of that. All we rely on is people who love music, genuinely investing energy, time and a few dollars to supporting new music as it’s introduced to them.

– Ben Lovett (Founder/CEO)

The release of Conrad Sewell’s debut album will mark a major pinnacle in his career. Though the 25-year-old Australian native has already written numerous songs for other artists in Australia, had a European hit with his previous band, and recently garnered millions of streams singing on Kygo’s track “Firestone,” this will be his first solo recording to date. His powerful voice is reminiscent of the soul era but fits nicely in the electronic music world. Paired with Sewell’s radiant vocals, his upcoming creation will swathe the hearts and ear drums of many as fans anxiously await the release of his debut. “I am extremely excited to be joining my first U.S. tour next month and coming out to play all of this new music I’ve been writing and recording for the album for everyone on the East Coast,” says Sewell in regards to the residency. “It’s going to be a sick show, I’m bringing my whole band out to play with me for our first-ever full band tour.”

French/American duo Freedom Fry have been self-producing and releasing music since 2011 which dances between pop, folk and indie-rock. Their effervescent single “Shaky Ground (Hey Na Na Na)” started the year at number one on The Hype Machine and Spotify ranked them on their list of “100 Emerging Artists From SXSW.” Freedom Fry’s musical chemistry happily dances and tickles its way through the neurons creating a fully immersive and upbeat live performance.

The ethereal soundscapes of Sydney Wayser’s creation, Clara-Nova, is a name and concept that was born in a dream. Sweeping strings, discordant interludes, bubbly beats, electronic sounds and alto vocals take the listener on a sonic journey through pastel landscapes. Both celestial and earthly, the upcoming Clara-Nova EP draws inspiration from deep sea dance parties, ancient Egyptian rituals and Martian folklore. There is no doubt that her otherworldly sound will resonate with all who experience it.

Communion Presents, the live promotional aspect of the company, also produces headline shows and tours. They offer concerts in over 20 cities within the United Kingdom, United States, and Australia that vary in genre and size, ranging from venue capacities of 150 to 10,000. In October, Galimatias and Alina Baraz will be stopping at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn, New York as a part of their first tour. Mysterious and alluring, the Danish/American duo will be showcasing their album Urban Flora which has already gained a vast fan base.

Year after year, Communion continues to curate a unique array of artists to indulge in. They are not just growing as a company, but they are growing as a community by connecting artists which each other as well as with their fans. Dive into fall with the Communion Music family and welcome in the many colors of autumn through the many colors of music.

Here’s Why LGBT Equality Must Be About More Than the U.S.

Like many reading this, I was elated over the Supreme Court’s marriage ruling on June 26. Two days later, Jeff (my partner of 20 years) and I joined friends to celebrate New York’s annual LGBT Pride March. And with the timing of the court’s decision, you could feel the hope among the millions of participants marching down Fifth Avenue.

Our joy was colored, however, by the news coming out of Istanbul where activists had tried to celebrate LGBT Pride several hours before New York’s march kicked off. And where attendees were met by riot police armed with water cannons, rubber bullets, and pepper spray. While we were toasting the marriage victory with our mimosas held high here in the U.S., our counterparts in Turkey were running for their very lives.

People who support and work at various points in our movement have been trying to anticipate how our movement should evolve after this historic milestone.

As we go forward, the movement’s agenda in the U.S. includes a number of clear priorities, including employment nondiscrimination, still lacking in the 29 states where a person can be fired on the basis of their sexual orientation. The number of states is even higher (32) for transgender people in search of a secure and stable job.

But we also have to be concerned about countering so-called “religious liberty” legislation being passed in states like Indiana, giving a free pass to those who want to undermine laws protecting LGBT people from discrimination.

These issues are familiar to anyone who has been reading the news headlines following the Supreme Court ruling. Unfortunately, support for LGBT activists abroad has not found its place on that agenda. It’s almost as if our concern for the lives of LGBT people ends at our nation’s shores.

So allow me to go on record by stating: We in the U.S. are not, in fact, the world. We need to cure our movement of its myopia and remember that justice for the LGBT community is a global cause, spreading far beyond our borders.

LGBT activists around the world have repeatedly asked us to support their work to improve such dire circumstances. We need to answer their call.

And yet, I have often heard the argument among LGBT activists here in the States that we already have enough on our plates. We can’t afford to divert our attention elsewhere for fear the U.S. movement will lose its own momentum.

I call bull. And I don’t think many of those asserting that argument fully understand the magnitude of the fatal consequences of inaction.

In more than 75 countries worldwide, you can be arrested simply on the basis of your sexual orientation. These countries have a collective population of over 3 billion — nine times the number of people living in the U.S. and almost 43 percent of the world’s population. In eight of those countries, it’s perfectly legal to be sentenced to death for being gay or lesbian.

I would encourage you to take a moment to reflect on those numbers.

Do you remember the old American Express slogan “Membership has its privileges”? The catchy saying referred to an exclusive set of benefits not available to other credit cardholders. LGBT Americans are similarly entitled to a long list of benefits granted to us through citizenship — usually obtained by the total accident of birth — and increasingly recognized by the institutions that govern our lives.

But these privileges come with the moral obligation for us to help others who by no accident of birth and no fault of their own do not share our good fortune. The LGBT movement here in the States is part of a larger and, sadly, more difficult world for LGBT people. We must see justice in global terms and do our part to ensure others abroad are afforded the same kind of freedoms in their own communities that we here increasingly take for granted.

I recently accompanied Arcus’ trustees on a trip to Africa where we were invited to meet some of the 300 LGBT activists from across the continent who had gathered at a regional conference in Kenya. We left deeply affected by the passionate leaders we met who are leading LGBT activism on a continent that remains both largely misunderstood and nearly completely unfunded. In a world as connected and integrated as ours, there’s simply no excuse for either of those facts.

We cannot and should not turn a blind eye to the grim realities that affect so many LGBT people around the world.

All of us here in the States — individuals, organizations, and funders — can leverage our influence and connections so that LGBT activists abroad can benefit from a broader range of support to achieve their goals. The question is: Will we?

Learn more about Arcus’ Social Justice program and how it works to ensure that individuals and families around the world of every sexual orientation and gender identity are able to live their lives with dignity and respect, and express their love and sense of self.

News in Brief: U.S. Soothes Upset Netanyahu With Shipment Of Ballistic Missiles

WASHINGTON—Following Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s heated objections to the nuclear deal struck between the United States and Iran, American officials announced Tuesday that they were calming the upset head of government by treating him to a nice, big shipment of ballistic missiles. “Bibi always gets a little cranky when he sees us talking to Iran, but a few dozen short-range surface-to-surface missiles usually cheer him right up,” said State Department spokesperson Daniel Goldman, adding that the shipment of MGM-140 ATACMS missiles should be enough to settle the sullen Israeli leader down at least for the deal’s crucial early implementation stages. “Of course, we try not to spoil him by giving him a whole new tactical ballistics delivery system every single time he throws a fit, but our guy’s pretty good at getting his way. At least we’ll have a couple months of peace and …

News in Brief: Study: U.S. Wastes 2 Million Hours Annually Figuring Out Where Tape Roll Starts

BLOOMINGTON, IN—A new study published Friday by researchers at Indiana University revealed that U.S. citizens waste approximately 2 million hours annually trying to figure out where a roll of tape starts. “According to our data, thousands of hours are squandered each day by Americans running their fingers along the outside of a roll of tape until they stumble upon the frayed edge where the tape begins,” said the study’s co-author Bethany Cohen, who noted that the amount of time Americans fritter away bringing the roll of tape up close to their face and slowly tracing their fingertips around its perimeter accounts for nearly $ 15 billion annually in lost productivity. “Furthermore, we discovered that when Americans eventually find where the tape starts, they waste an additional 4 million hours per year meticulously picking at the tape with a fingernail until they have a large enough tab to peel …

WASHINGTON—Following the Supreme Court’s landmark decision making same-sex marriage legal nationwide, sources confirmed Friday that only 47,000 social justice milestones need to be reached before the U.S. achieves full equality. “This is a watershed moment for civil rights that finally brings the dream of living in an equitable society one tiny fraction of a step closer to reality,” said civil rights lawyer Helene Najjar, adding that the country could now turn its attention to closing the income gap, ending racial discrimination in law enforcement, and providing equal educational opportunities for all children, among tens of thousands of other issues. “We have been striving for this victory for decades, and we will continue to fight for a more just society until we have reached all 47,000 human rights milestones that still need to be achieved. This win proves that we are inching toward living in a …

LGBT Asylum Seekers Not Getting Enough Relief In U.S., Report Finds

WASHINGTON — While the United States awaits a major Supreme Court decision that could legalize gay marriage across the nation, there are more than 70 countries where being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender is a crime.

LGBT rights activist Victor Mukasa said the violence and hate crimes against LGBT people in his home country of Uganda became so bad that he had to get out.

“At some point it became unbearable. It became unbearable and you’re just like, ‘I have to leave. I have to leave to save my life,'” Mukasa said Thursday at a panel hosted by the think tank Center for American Progress. “There are people who are here for safety. There are people there who need safety.”

The U.S. has been offering asylum to LGBT people who face persecution in their home countries since 1994. Mukasa was able to obtain asylum in 2013, and others have done the same, although the government does not collect data on LGBT asylum seekers. But LGBT people still face serious barriers to receiving asylum, according to a report released Thursday by the Center for American Progress.

“For LGBT people seeking a haven in this country, we are doing more to meet our charge than ever before, but much more work still remains,” said Winnie Stachelberg, an executive vice president at the think tank who participated in the panel discussion.

One difficulty is a requirement that asylum seekers apply within a year of arriving in the U.S. The Center for American Progress report calls for dropping the one-year deadline so that those who need protection aren’t denied it simply because they applied too late.

“A lot of people don’t even realize that they can get protection based on persecution because of their sexual orientation or identity,” Sharita Gruberg, senior policy analyst at the think tank, said during the panel discussion. “And feeling comfortable disclosing something to a government official you’ve been forced for survival reasons to hide your entire life, you have to do all that and do it in a year.”

The report also urges the government to limit the detention of immigrants, which it says hurts individuals’ chances of receiving asylum. Aaron Morris, legal director at the nonprofit group Immigration Equality, said detention is particularly problematic for transgender people.

“One of the biggest problems that we see and one of our highest policy priorities is to get the U.S. government to stop putting transgender women in men’s facilities,” Morris said at the panel. “They’re attempting to keep them safer, but it’s not a humane way to do so.”

The report recommends the government dedicate more resources to reducing the backlog in immigration courts, offer free legal counsel to asylum seekers and increase training on LGBT issues for immigration officers and judges.

Former Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), who is openly gay, said during Thursday’s discussion that he thinks the nation’s asylum policy could be improved by allowing people to apply at U.S. embassies in their home countries.

“Asylum is given to people who are already here and then can apply not to be sent back by documenting the problems,” said Frank, who helped push to expand asylum to include LGBT people in 1994. “There should be a procedure whereby people could go to the embassy and apply for refugee status.”

Even after people are granted asylum in the U.S., Mukasa said, many LGBT individuals need assistance in finding food, jobs and housing.

News in Brief: Report: More U.S. Families Living With Multiple Generations Of Xbox Under One Roof

WASHINGTON—Calling the trend a reflection of the nation’s changing social and economic landscape, a report released Friday by the Pew Research Center confirmed that more U.S. families are living with multiple generations of Xbox under one roof. “According to our survey data, over the past decade we have seen a dramatic rise in the number of American households that contain two or even three generations of consoles,” said the report’s author, Sean Corfield, adding that, in many cases, citizens reported that their Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One all share the same room. “The vast majority of Americans we surveyed described feeling an obligation to continue caring for their older consoles as they age, even as they continue to welcome new generations into their homes. At the same time, more Americans are also finding themselves trying to free space in their basement after their Xbox 360 …

News in Brief: Report Finds Drug Tunnels Most Intact Transport Infrastructure In U.S.

ARLINGTON, VA—Touting the extensive safety precautions, routine maintenance, and limited congestion, a report published Friday by the American Transportation Research Institute revealed that drug tunnels are now the most intact and reliable form of transport infrastructure in the United States. “The nation’s drug-smuggling tunnels have benefited from large-scale investments in new technology, high-quality materials, and regular repairs, leaving them in far better condition than U.S. railways, ports, bridges, and interstates,” the report read in part, which praised the state-of-the-art rail systems in many tunnels for efficiently ferrying narcotics with few, if any, malfunctions. “With advanced ventilation systems to keep fresh air circulating and well-lit passages to prevent accidents, these tunnels are a modern engineering feat, the likes of which are virtually unseen elsewhere in the U.S. transit network.” The report concluded by noting that, with scores of new construction projects underway, U.S. drug tunnels are …

U.S. Saves Soccer, Becomes Most Popular Country In World

Earlier this week, an excited John Oliver carefully dissected the U.S.-led investigation into FIFA, the most powerful sports organization in the world. The investigation found massive amounts of evidence of corruption and bribery within the organization, but nothing directly tied to the infamous FIFA president Sepp Blatter, at first glance.

Oliver noted that if the United States of America, land of the free, home of the brave, could successfully “find something to indict” Blatter, “the whole world’s opinion of America would change overnight.”

“That is what’s on the table for you, America,” Oliver added, comparing it to if the Dutch somehow figured out a way to bring down Donald Trump.

Look at this man. He wants Blatter taken down so bad. (Source: YouTube)

On Tuesday, the world got something even better than a Blatter indictment. It got an announcement that Blatter had decided to step down from his post of his own volition nearly two decades at the helm, and just days after his re-election. The breaking point could very well have been some supposed bribery dug up by U.S. authorities and reported on by a little U.S.-born news organization known as THE NEW YORK TIMES, which put the president suspiciously close to bribery allegations.

So from all of the U.S. to John Oliver and the world, I say: YOU’RE WELCOME. WE DID IT. WE TOOK DOWN BLATTER. AMERICA, OF ALL PLACES, SAVED SOCCER. AMERICA IS BACK. LET’S GET WILD. COCA COLA. MOTORCYCLES. EAGLES. FREEDOM. LIBERTY. HAPPINESS. ALL THE OTHER THINGS WE INVENTED AND/OR TOOK CREDIT FOR. TELL THE WORLD, TWITTER. TELL THE WORLD.

We here in America don’t like to gloat when we do something that saves the world (that was a joke), but there is one thing we do request of the world: start calling football soccer. Because America, home of American football, just pulled soccer from the grips of Blatter. Yes, we can? So passé. Yes, we did.

News: U.S. Dispatches Condolence Drones To Middle East Following Civilian Casualties

WASHINGTON—In an effort to limit the fallout from any unintended collateral damage, the Pentagon has dispatched a fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles to the Middle East specially designed to express condolences for the civilian casualties of U.S. drone airstrikes, sources confirmed Wednesday.

The remotely piloted aircraft, known as the M2-Griever, have reportedly targeted bereaved individuals in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, and other restive regions. Military officials confirmed that the state-of-the-art drones have already flown hundreds of covert condolence missions in an effort to convey the U.S. government’s official regrets to those mourning the death of innocents caught in the midst of American combat operations.

“The Griever represents the future of warfare damage control,” said U.S. Air Force general Mitchell Holt, who explained that standard operating procedures now call for the immediate deployment of a condolence drone upon determining that a prior Reaper drone attack resulted in …

By Alicia Powell NEW YORK (Reuters) – With their mix of gospel and R&B songs, the classically trained Bala Brothers are stars at home in South Africa but Loyiso, Zwai and Phelo have set their sights on a new international audience and are planning a tour in the United States. Growing up in Kwa-Nobuhle township outside Port Elizabeth, the brothers have been known at home since the eldest, Zwai, broke the color barrier of South Africa’s famed Drakensberg Boys Choir by becoming its first black member in 1988. In February, U.S. broadcaster PBS aired a special concert featuring the trio, which the brothers, who sing in English and the Xhosa language, say exposed them to a new audience. “We really hope that it will take us beyond (where) any other South African or African actor ever stepped.

U.S. Court Halts Labor Department Protection For Same-Sex Couples

(Adds background)

By Jon Herskovitz

AUSTIN, Texas, March 26 (Reuters) – A U.S. district judge in Texas on Thursday issued a stay to halt the U.S. Labor Department from implementing a rule that would expand medical leave protections for same-sex couples, saying the move impinges on the rights of states that ban gay marriage.

The state of Texas, which has a state constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, last week sued the Labor Department over the rule that would grant family medical leave protections to all married same-sex couples.

“The public maintains an abiding interest in preserving the rule of law and enforcing the states’ duly enacted laws from federal encroachment,” wrote Reed O’Connor, a district judge in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas.

Texas was the first challenge to the department’s rule, which is set to take effect on Friday. Arkansas, Louisiana and Nebraska also joined the suit.

The rule requires companies to follow the marriage laws of the states in which their employees were wed, rather than where they reside, for the purpose of applying the federal Family and Medical Leave Act. That law requires employers to grant workers unpaid leave after giving birth or to care for sick family members.

“We are pleased that the Department of Labor’s effort to override our laws via federal rule-making has been halted, and we will continue to defend our sovereignty in this case,” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a statement.

The rule has been hailed by gay rights groups and attorneys who represent workers and has divided employers. Some companies say it will impose a hefty burden on them to know the relevant laws and employees’ personal information. Others say the opposite, that a uniform policy will ease the financial stress of complying with a patchwork of laws.

The U.S. Supreme Court next month is scheduled to consider for the first time whether there is a constitutional right to marry. A ruling in favor of same-sex couples would likely moot the family leave issue.

North Korea Blames U.S. For Shutting Down Its Internet, Says Obama Was Behind ‘The Interview’ Release

HYUNG-JIN KIM, Associated Press

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea called President Barack Obama “a monkey” and blamed the U.S. on Saturday for shutting down its Internet amid the hacking row over the comedy “The Interview.”

North Korea has denied involvement in a crippling cyberattack on Sony Pictures but has expressed fury over the comedy depicting an assassination of its leader Kim Jong Un. After Sony Pictures initially called off the release in a decision criticized by Obama, the movie has opened this week.

On Saturday, the North’s powerful National Defense Commission, the country’s top governing body led by Kim, said that Obama was behind the release of “The Interview.” It described the movie as illegal, dishonest and reactionary.

“Obama always goes reckless in words and deeds like a monkey in a tropical forest,” an unidentified spokesman at the commission’s Policy Department said in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

He also accused Washington for intermittent outages of North Korea websites this week, after the U.S. had promised to respond to the Sony hack.

There was no immediate reaction from the White House on Saturday.

According to the North Korea commission’s spokesman, “the U.S., a big country, started disturbing the Internet operation of major media of the DPRK, not knowing shame like children playing a tag.”

The commission said the movie was the results of a hostile U.S. policy toward North Korea, and threatened the U.S. with unspecified consequences.

North Korea and the U.S. remain technically in a state of war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty. The rivals also are locked in an international standoff over the North’s nuclear and missile programs and its alleged human rights abuses. The U.S. stations about 28,500 troops in South Korea as deterrence against North Korean aggression.

North Korea’s Internet Falls Following Threats To U.S.

After the FBI identified North Korea as the culprit behind the Sony Pictures email leak, the nation’s link to the Internet was cut, taking it completely down.

Centered on the assassination of N.Korea leader Kim Jong-un, the Seth Rogen/James Franco comedy The Interview received backlash before it was even released, a series of offensive emails from Sony executives was released shortly after. The studio completely pulled the movie after theatres received threats for agreeing to show it, a move criticized by President Obama and more.

Although U.S. Officials have denied any responsibility for the internet hacking they advised that Korea needs to compensate Sony for the damages caused by the film’s removal.

In a letter to Sony, Democrat Brad Sherman wrote“Threats from a dictator in North Korea should not stop Americans from seeing any movie. We have a responsibility to stand up against these attempts at intimidation..”

Will The U.S. Make A Play For Assata Shakur?

If you have a conscious bone in your body, you know that Assata Shakur has been in Cuba for the past 40 years in political asylum. As the United States and Cuba work towards better diplomatic relations, a lot of folks like myself are wondering what will become of the 67 year-old revolutionary.

Hip-Hop intellect Micky Factz weighed in on Facebook, “While ya’ll clamor about Bobby Shmurda, The USA & Cuba are in talks for diplomatic relations… Meaning the capture of Assata Shakur… Whom the FBI has as the number 1 female terrorist in the world…because she “allegedly” murdered a state trooper. She escaped prison and has been in cuba for 40 years. Shmoney dance to that.”

In 2013, I penned a piece called called, “Hip-hop’s infatuation with Assata Shakur: It’s complicated,” where I talked about rap music’s love of the political icon. On the other side, the police and their supporters in New Jersey have wanted Assata’s head forever and have gone so far as to make her the first woman added to their list of living terrorists. And, then put a price on her head for $ 2 million. A member of the Black Liberation Army, Shakur was convicted in 1977 of the 1973 for the murder of state trooper Werner Foerster. The details of the case have been highly debated to say the least and her supporters maintain she is the victim of a corrupt justice system.

Certainly, Assata’s case take on a new context if we look at the present times and how justice has played out recently with video recording, technology and highly questionable policing. Then bundle that with, COINTELPRO, a national legacy of police brutality and abuse of power, and the notion that those police tactics were infinitely more sinister in the 1960’s. We as “a people” need to collectively rethink – not demonize – Assata. But, demonizing persists as the American way, whether you’re a dead young Black man or an elderly living Black woman.

It has been proven several times over, based on forensic evidence, that she was shot twice by police with her hands up. Sound familiar? It actually sounds like Assata deserves reexamination indeed.  We live in times where there is violence perpetrated against who speak out. New York Police have even petitioned for permission to mass arrest protestors without warning.

All of this on President Obama’s watch.

What a quandary.

If your boss doesn’t let you root for your country after reading that, well, then maybe you need to find a new boss. The game is at 12 p.m. EST.
