She speaks six languages, but seldom raises her voice. The gentlemen aren't beating down her door. Until the night of the Spindle Cove Christmas ball, when a mysterious stranger crashes into the ballroom and collapses at Violet's feet. He's wet, chilled, bleeding, and speaking in an unfamiliar tongue. Only Violet understands him. And she knows he's not what he seems. She has one night to draw forth the secrets of this dangerously handsome rogue. Is he a smuggler? A fugitive? An enemy spy? She needs answers by sunrise, but her captive would rather seduce than confess. To learn his secrets, Violet must reveal hers—and open herself to adventure, passion, and the unthinkable… Love.

But—his roses! She can’t have his roses. Even if she does have all those curls and green eyes and, and, and…what was he growling about again? Or maybe he just wants her. When an enemy invades his valley and threatens his home, heart, and livelihood, Matthieu Rosier really knows only one way to defend himself. It might involve kissing. ‘Once Upon A Time’ Will Explore LGBT Relationship In Season 5

An LGBT relationship is coming to ABC drama “Once Upon a Time.”

Executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz revealed the information to Entertainment Weekly after a screening of the season premiere on Friday.

“We know that community have been big supporters of the show and we would love to be able to tell a love story that reflects that,” Kitsis said.

“It’s something we want to do this year,” Horowitz added. “It’s something we think is due and important to do on the show. This is the world we live in.”

Viewers speculate that the relationship could occur between Mulan and Aurora, but Kitsis and Horowitz did not reveal which characters the arc would feature.

Last week, Horowitz shared a script tease for the season premiere on Twitter.

The GOP Debate Season Is Upon Us – Let the Games Begin

If you couldn’t sit through the two hours of the 2016 Republican Presidential Debate ‘Voters First’ Forum on CSPAN, not only do I understand, but I’ve got you covered. The event was organized by New Hampshire’s Union Leader newspaper and took place on the campus of St. Anselm College in Manchester.

The Union Leader announced in June that it would be hosting their own Republican primary forum and the original plan was to host it on the same night as the Fox News debate. That’s not exactly what happened, as FOX changed the way in which they were accepting candidates. The issue the Union Leader had was just that: the way in which FOX was running the debate. The plan was to allow only those candidates who make up the top 10 slots in the polls. FOX wouldn’t divulge what polls they were going to use. though. The entire ordeal seemed, for a while to be a secret.

The Union Leader’s publisher, Joseph McQuaid, wrote:

What Fox is attempting to do, and is actually bragging about doing, is a real threat to the first-in-the-nation primary. Fox boasts that it will ‘winnow’ the field of candidates before New Hampshire gets to do so. That isn’t just bad for New Hampshire, it’s bad for the presidential selection process by limiting the field to only the best-known few with the biggest bankrolls.

McQuaid also penned an open letter, signed by 56 prominent New Hampshire Republicans, urging FOX and the Republican National Committee (RNC) to change the debate criteria. A move, he said, that should be a wake-up call.

“Voters here have an independent streak,” he said, “and they might well be disposed to vote for a so-called ‘also-ran’ who didn’t meet the Fox criteria but who has spent the time and effort here to meet them and answer their questions.”

Per RNC rules, any candidates who participate in an unsanctioned debate are barred from future RNC debates. But McQuaid said in an email that he is not concerned. And as long as the forum stays a forum and does not feature multiple candidates on stage interacting with one another, candidates are free to participate in further RNC debates. “Perhaps some of the Fox eligible will prefer a N.H. forum. And, no, I’m unconcerned. Candidates will make their own decisions,” he said.

Neither former governor Mike Huckabee nor billionaire Donald Trump were at the forum. Huckabee’s Communications Director, Alice Stewart, said he was unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict. There was, unsurprisingly, no elaboration on what the conflict was. Trump on the other hand, wasn’t so vague and responded in the usual Trump way we’ve become accustomed to, saying,

I feel it is unlikely I will be getting the endorsement from you and the Union Leader. I have made a great fortune based on instinct and that, unfortunately, is my view. Therefore, and for other reasons including the fact that I feel there are too many people onstage to have a proper forum, I will not be attending.

There was also some word going around that Trump was unhappy with some of the coverage he received from the paper and was snubbing them, which may be the case; but based on his statement, it was his usual inability to handle not being center stage, adored and considered the most important person in the room. On Thursday, FOX has him center stage with all of the other candidates flanking him, so there’s a pretty good chance he’ll show up.

The forum went on as scheduled and proved to be a cordial event with little infighting among the candidates. It was organized into two rounds. The first consisted of candidates answering questions on the issues within five minute allotted slots. The second round, also constrained to five minutes, consisted of shorter questions, with an additional 30 seconds allowed for the candidate to make his or her pitch to voters. Rather than lining up the 14 candidates on stage, a logistical and camera operator’s nightmare, each candidate took their turn sitting with the moderator.

The candidates, in no particular order, were Bobby Jindal, John Kasich, George Pataki, Rick Perry, Rick Santorum, Scott Walker, Jeb Bush, Carly Fiorina, Ben Carson, Chris Christie and Lindsey Graham onstage, while Ted Cruz, Rand Paul and Marco Rubio were on a televised link from D.C., where they were probably fervently trying to defund Planned Parenthood.

Liberals Unite’s Ann Werner has a good run down of the topics in her post.

In a nut shell, the candidates as a whole, agreed that Hillary Clinton and President Obama are evil incarnate and pathological liars; Bernie Sanders is a Socialist, so equally evil; Liberals like to be viewed as victims and are what’s wrong with this country; just about every social program including but not limited to Social Security, Medicare, Planned Parenthood and Obamacare should be abolished or, at the very least, privatized; regulations in general and any attempt to address climate change are job killers; screw the minimum wage and raise the retirement age; and immigration was a free for all of ridiculous claims and, alas, no solutions.

With that out of the way, Thursday on FOX should be quite a show and the Donald will be center stage, so popcorn sales should be through the roof. It’s hard to imagine that it’ll be any different as far as questions go and I’d expect that most of them are going to be softballs.

It’s not difficult to speculate what’s going to be covered as most of the questions are already teed up. Trump has managed to put immigration on the lips of every politician, voter, and reporter in the country. The Republican assault on Planned Parenthood will no doubt come up. The Iran deal will be unanimously trashed. And there will be the requisite cries to repeal Obamacare.

Here’s what won’t be covered: Inequality and stagnant wages; trade strategy; rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure; student debt; climate change; fair taxes; police brutality; campaign finance; and the nation’s incarceration rate. All topics that are on the minds of voters — and all topics that are kryptonite to the GOP. And since it’s being held and moderated and controlled by FOX, none of these issues will addressed.

So here’s my advice for Thursday: get comfortable, grab your favorite bottle of liquor, and pretend it’s just another prime time sitcom. Matt Taibbi over at “Rolling Stone” put together a GOP drinking game for the event.

Here’s the list:

Suggested drinkable comments such as, “Anyone mentions Hitler, Nazis or Neville Chamberlain. Includes related imagery, e.g. ‘ovens'” and “Claims a positive relationship with a minority. Also known as the, “Some of my best friends are…”rule.'” Or the more obvious and sure to get you really drunk, “Anyone invokes St. Ronald Reagan” and “Someone promises to ‘take America back.'”

If you’re playing or seriously considering playing this game on Thursday night, it might be a good idea to call in sick and have the number to the closest detox — it’s going to be a long night.

Sore Winners: We Should Acknowledge and Build Upon Our Successes

Over the past two weeks there have been two incidents that have reinforced my belief that many of us in the LGBT community are sore winners. The first was evident in the discussions relating to the future of the movement post-Obergefell that I discussed in my last column, where the national advocacy organizations are continuing to ignore the real, substantive protections already in place. We have federal employment protections, and few acknowledge the win, let alone celebrate it.

The second relates to the incident of the White House heckler, Jennicet Gutiérrez. Jennicet is the woman who interrupted the president 20 seconds into his speech in the East Room of the White House during the annual Pride reception on June 24. Her “heckling” was shouting out to the president, “I am a trans woman! … No more deportations!”

The president, after Jennicet wouldn’t stand down, responded, “Listen, you’re in my house. … Shame on you. You shouldn’t be doing this. … You know, my attitude is: If you’re eating the hors d’oeuvres — you know what I’m saying? — and drinking the booze….”

This incident then blew up, as things do today, over Twitter and beyond, as the usual activist rift was once again on full display. There was the debate between the insiders and outsiders — the insiders who felt that a reception with the president of the United States demands respectful behavior, and the outsiders who believe that it’s always a ripe opportunity to press the cause with direct action, even in the East Room of the White House. There were those who felt that “there is a time and a place,” and that this was neither, versus those who felt that the cause is so important that no risk is not worth taking.

There was also a secondary conflict, between those who eventually took to booing Jennicet when she wouldn’t stop (and it should be noted that she began within 20 seconds of the start of the president’s speech and continued for two minutes) and those who felt that since she’s a trans Latina and the room was full of predominantly white gay men, this was clearly an act of transphobia and racism. Of course, the latter is usually the case for some people of a Bolshevik mindset, who condemn an entire class of people by virtue of their class, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or ethnicity/race.

The wheels came off, and a rational debate became impossible. My opinion was, and still is, that there really is a time and a place, which may include a White House Pride reception, but in this case there was a way to accomplish the goal without alienating the rather influential person you’re trying to persuade. My sense after watching all the videos is that the crowd was neither transphobic nor anti-Hispanic and was driven to their response by Jennicet’s refusal to stop after she had made her point.

I’m also just as uncomfortable with shaming the crowd as I am with shaming her for speaking out. Janet Mock tweeted that the booing reminded her of Sylvia Rivera’s experience in 1969. Except that Sylvia Rivera spoke out against the gay community in New York in 1973 when they wouldn’t let her (or many lesbians, for that matter) take to the stage during the Pride festivities. The greatest president the LGBT community will probably ever know is not the equivalent of the New York gay community of the early ’70s. And the great lesbian activist and agent of social change, Urvashi Vaid, then the Director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, interrupting President Bush in 1989 during his only speech about the AIDS crisis, which he and his predecessor, Ronald Reagan, had refused to confront, is not the same as heckling President Obama.

I’m not the only one willing to say so. Trans Latina Amada Briseno, who was also at the White House, agrees. She also spoke out, but in a positive manner, and the president responded that hers was the kind of heckling he can always accept.

Evidence matters to me. Jennicet wrote:

I was fortunate to be invited to the White House to listen to President Obama’s speech recognizing the LGBTQ community and the progress being made. But while he spoke of ‘trans women of color being targeted,’ his administration holds LGBTQ and trans immigrants in detention. I spoke out because our issues and struggles can no longer be ignored.

Jennicet claimed that her outburst was spontaneous, yet she launched into it before the President got warmed up. She couldn’t have been responding to the president’s words, including his acknowledgment that “transgender women of color are particularly vulnerable,” because he had barely gotten to “hello.”

More importantly, she claimed that she was planning on writing a letter to the president but only decided to speak out when the president didn’t address trans detention issues. As I noted above, she didn’t let him speak, so she couldn’t know. She also said she was invited to the reception by the White House, but she was actually the plus-one of Angela Peoples, GetEqual’s co-director. GetEqual is rightly known for its guerrilla tactics, and Jennicet’s actions fit the mold.

Angela Peoples told MTV News:

Jennicet, who is a trans woman of color, wanted to use [the White House Pride reception] as an opportunity to bring the message of stopping the detention and torture of trans women in immigration facilities to the president. I was so, so proud of her for what she did.

According to a statement from Not1More:

As a transgender woman who is undocumented, Gutiérrez said she could not celebrate while some 75 transgender detainees were still being exposed to assault and abuse in ICE custody at this very moment.

Angela has since confirmed to me that this was indeed a GetEqual action, but they chose not to announce that, allowing Jennicet to speak out and be the face of the action. I have great respect for GetEqual, but that doesn’t get to my fundamental problem with this incident.

Jennicet had been active for seven months in working to stop the deportations. She was working with GetEqual. GetEqual knew that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was working on the problems with detention, because the LGBT community, along with allies in the immigration reform community, had been working on this issue for years. They knew that there was a positive new memo on the issue dated June 19, five days before the Pride reception. And Secretary Johnson of the Department of Homeland Security released a new policy on June 24, before the Pride reception, to speed up the release of all immigrants in detention, another of Jennicet’s concerns.

What this tells me is that the activists who are doing the hard, arduous work of
influencing the administration and moving the bureaucracy, often for little pay and recognition, are actually winning this fight for us. And there are some who are willing to ignore the ongoing progress that is occurring to grandstand for personal reasons. People who don’t know the facts will credit Jennicet’s actions with bringing about this recent change, when that is not the case at all. I’m told that Jennicet repeated her performance two days later at the Stonewall Inn during the New York Pride festivities.

Change never comes quickly enough. As Angela Peoples said, “there’s no ‘right time and place’ to demand basic human dignity.” But there’s a difference between simply making a statement, which may or may not work but is guaranteed to offend many allies, including the most important one of all, the guy at the top, and acting smartly with full knowledge of context and consequences. Angela explained that GetEqual’s goal mirrors that of Not1More, which is to end all detention of queer people — because detention is wrong in general, and because queer people in detention are at risk of grievous bodily harm.

I agree with that goal. However, we need to put that goal in context and not blindside those who are committed to helping the community or offend the ones with the power to help us reach our ultimate goal.

We just don’t seem to know how to win gracefully.

Once Upon a Festival 2015 Is Upon Us

2015-06-12-1434072345-4297372-Poster_519.jpg

Just like creating a film, putting together a multiple day live music event is a collaborative art form. With music festivals on the rise, it was only a matter of time before they combined forces to form a one-of-a-kind co-creative super festival. The bright, collaborative minds of Envision, Lucidity, Desert Hearts, Enchanted Forest, Antennae Presents, Raindance and Emersion have joined forces and are thrilled to bring you the first annual Once Upon a Festival.

Just around the corner, Once Upon a Festival will be held on June 12-14, 2015 at the swimming friendly East Park Reservoir in Colusa County, California on the west side of Sacramento Valley and just three hours north of the Bay Area. Surrounded by California’s iconic golden rolling hills, the venue itself plays a huge role in the festival. With trees available for hammocks and slacklines and a lake to escape the inland heat, Once Upon a Festival promises to be a truly unique festival experience.

Building a fairy tale wonderland, Once Upon a Festival boasts fully immersive installations, stages, galleries, and environments 24 hours a day. With a 24/7 noise permit, there will be a constant flow of music for those who wish to dance til sunrise and beyond. One of the most innovative elements of this festival is the construction of a floating stage complete with floating dancing platforms.

Hookadome and Sacred Spaces, known for their installations and decor at Burning Man and various international festivals, will be contributing their tangible visions for patrons to enjoy. Lucidity will be bringing their Branches Mobile Art Gallery while Enchanted Forest will be featuring their lounging and healing sanctuary, Nectar Temple. Like a transformational version of Belgium’s Tomorrow Land, Once Upon a Festival will be bringing to life the whimsy of a fairy tale by creating a magical realm where all of our childhood memories of bean stalks, mermaids and princesses will be manifested.

What is really drawing people from all corners of country to this event is its fairy-tale lineup. Emancipator, STWO, Sweater Beats, Random Rab, Dimond Saints, Coyote Kisses, Mark Farina, Desert Hearts crew, Kalya Scintilla, Desert Dwellers, Funk Hunters, An-ten-nae, Andreilien, Nominus, Mumukshu, Digital Rust, Atyya, Orphic, Sixis and many more will be enchanting our ears, minds and bodies.

Each stage will offer its own special flavor of soul-churning electronic music. The Lost Tribe Tree House will be dosing its visitors with viscous globs of bass music while Envision is curating the Sunday lineup from the quintessential Random Rab sunrise-until-close set with Kalya Scintilla. The Pirate Ship stage will be the home for house heads, featuring a 3 hour Mark Farina sunset set and two thumping nights of Desert Hearts takeovers. All daytime music will take place at the floating stage in the middle of the lake where festival-goers can bask, dip, and dance. The full schedule is now posted on Facebook.

I believe that by gathering in community out in nature we create a rare opportunity for individuals to observe their value systems and inherent human motivations from a new or alternative perspective that is free of social conditioning. Providing this opportunity is my driving motivation for producing these events but it is just an opportunity, not a transformation. It is always up to the participant to capture the moment and create a lasting positive impression.
