Webbie Avoids Jail Time In Domestic Violence Case, Accepts Generous Plea Deal

BET Hip Hop Awards 2011 - Arrivals

Source: Johnny Nunez / Getty

“Independent” rapper Webbie will be getting N-O-J-A-I-L-T-I-M-E for allegedly putting hands on his then-girlfriend because he copped a plea deal.

TMZ exclusively reports Webbie agreed to plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of simple battery on Thursday (August 2nd) and was given a slap on the wrist in the form of one-year probation. Webbie was initially charged with multiple felonies ranging from 2nd-degree battery, false imprisonment and domestic abuse by strangulation back in July of 2017 when he reportedly assaulted his now ex-girlfriend in a hotel room. To back up her claims she even shared photos of her injuries she suffered at the hands of Webbie.

So yeah he definitely dodged a big bullet because he was looking at some serious jail time.

Per TMZ:

According to the East Baton Rouge court clerk … Webbie agreed to plead guilty Thursday to a misdemeanor charge of simple battery and was sentenced to one year of probation.

He’ll have to keep his nose clean during that time, complete 20 hours of community service and anger management classes. The court also ordered him to pay $ 5k in restitution to his ex-GF and $ 500 in court fees.

Webbie and ex-girlfriend had a well documented toxic relationship. He accused his then-girlfriend of wrecking his home and stealing jewelry and called the cops on her. We just hope Webbie takes this moment and realizes he was given an opportunity most don’t get. Jail is no place you want to spend any time in for something you could have easily avoided.

‘South Park’ To Take On Police Violence In New Episode

The national debate on police violence has spread from Ferguson and Baltimore all the way to the small town of South Park, Colorado.

On this Wednesday’s episode of long-running animated series “South Park,” the town’s residents decide to abolish the police because they’re fed up with people who “impose their authority on the underprivileged.” Given the Comedy Central show’s history of iconoclasm, and its focus in Season 19 on political correctness, we’re gonna go ahead and guess that it doesn’t end well.

Here’s a clip from the episode, in which one of the town’s police officers defends his kind, saying that “not all cops are racist, trigger-happy assholes.”

“South Park,” which was created by college friends Trey Stone and Matt Parker, has a long and storied history of tackling controversial topics. Many of its most inflammatory episodes have focused on religious figures like Muhammad to the Virgin Mary.

Why I’m Scared to Send My Daughter to School in America: Gun Violence by the Numbers

gun violence

I love this country. I love the state of New York, where I was born and raised, and where my husband and I are raising our almost-2-year-old daughter. When I see the images of Syrian refugees risking their lives to escape the terror in their native country or read about the Nigerian girls who were kidnapped from their school by Boko Haram, my heart aches, and surges with gratitude that I live in America. But with the news of each deadly mass shooting, the sense of security I feel here is falling away.

Even more disturbing, while my fear and my anger mount each time I learn that innocent lives were lost to gun violence—at church, on college campuses, at the movies, at the supermarket—I’m no longer surprised by the headlines. I remember the horror I felt in my gut when my mom called to tell me about the Newtown massacre as I waited for a flight at LaGuardia on December 14, 2012. Three years later, tweets and TV special reports announcing mass shootings are routine.

I worry for my own safety. Over the summer, when the lights went down at the movie theater where I went to see Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck, I wondered for a brief moment: “Could someone here take out a gun and start shooting?” That’s what happened at a Lafayette, Louisiana, showing of the same movie, where a gunman opened fire into the crowd, killing two women: Mayci Breaux, 21, and Jillian Johnson, 33.

Far worse, I worry for my baby’s safety. More than once, when ringing the buzzer and waiting for the door to unlock at her daycare, a wonderful place filled with loving people and the wallpaper of children’s drawings, my mind has gone to a grim place: “Could the wrong sort of person slip in here somehow? Could she ever be hurt at this, or another, school?” It’s happened before, many times, in many places.

It’s tempting, and momentarily comforting, to tell yourself, It won’t happen to me. Like the jolt of panic you feel when your plane lurches with turbulence and you reason with yourself: What are the odds? But when it comes to gun violence and schoolchildren, that rationale isn’t working for me. The odds, as it turns out, are sickening.

I gathered the following statistics from the CDC, the FBI, and Everytown for Gun Safety, Michael Bloomberg’s gun-control group. (It should be noted that Everytown defines school shootings to include “accidental discharges of firearms, suicide attempts, and incidents in which no involved party was affiliated with the school.”) Unbelievably, or believably, since I began writing this piece in my head yesterday morning, and compiling these numbers, there have been two more school shootings in this country. A freshman killed one student and injured three more at Northern Arizona University; another student was fatally shot and a second person was injured at Texas Southern University. What is there left to say?

Black Lives Matter, ACT UP and the Urgency of Violence and Death

There’s been lots of criticism from some progressives after Senator Bernie Sanders was shouted down by Black Lives Matters activists in Seattle recently, especially from supporters of Sanders’ presidential campaign. The basic tenor is that Sanders is a “friend” and thus protesting him is a waste of time, diverting from going after the “real” enemy. But much context is missing among the critics of Black Lives Matter, and, in one case in which a a comparison to the fiery AIDS activist group ACT UP is made, there’s a bit of unintentional historical revisionism that needs to be cleared up.

I was sitting in the crowd when former Maryland governor, Martin O’Malley, was interrupted by Black Lives Matter protestors in Phoenix at Netroots Nation last month. The activists took the stage and made the point that the issue of police violence and killings of black citizens weren’t being discussed adequately by progressives and political candidates. They demanded answers from O’Malley, and, directly afterward, from Bernie Sanders. It was disruptive, loud, tense and passionate.

And the first thing that came to my mind was ACT UP, a group of which I was a part, chairing its media committee back in the late ’80s, and which engaged in similar kinds of protest and disruption, including against Democratic presidential candidates. The urgency of the protest was similar as well: People are dying, and no one in power seems to be doing anything to stop it.

That’s why I was perplexed by at least one critic of Black Lives Matter suggesting that the group could take a page from ACT UP, which is portrayed as having engaged in a more productive form of disruption. Charles Pierce, a sharp, progressive writer I’ve followed for years and who does great work, criticized Black Lives Matter on Esquire.com for protesting Sanders in Seattle — preventing him from speaking — and like many other progressive critics he called the action “stupid” and “counterproductive” since Sanders basically supports the cause, unlike GOP presidential candidates. In a follow-up post he took back the word “counterproductive” but stuck by his general criticism and used ACT UP, which transformed the response by government, media and the health care establishment to HIV, as a model of activism which Black Lives Matter should follow.

The implied message was that ACT UP was successful by only targeting obvious enemies and not offending supposed allies. But that is simply not true. ACT UP was hated, despised, ridiculed and attacked by supposed friends — including many in the gay community itself — who claimed we were hitting the “wrong” targets, including our supposed allies, similar to the criticism Black Lives Matter is receiving now. The progressive Village Voice, born in the 1960s’ rebellion, was perhaps the biggest critic of ACT UP in the early years. According to some progressive critics there and elsewhere, we were fascists or Stalinists who silenced people with angry and confrontational protests. Or we were alienating the very people we were supposed to bring in.

The same was true of the criticism of the tactics of the various offshoots of ACT UP in the early ’90s, such as Queer Nation, which focused on the violence against gays and engaged in guerrilla actions to promote queer visibility, staging kiss-ins and wheat-pasting posters around major cities which revealed the sexual orientation of closeted prominent Hollywood and political figures.

And there were virulent attacks on OutWeek magazine, another ACT UP offshoot, founded by ACT UP members, which was at the center of the so-called “outing” movement (and where I was an editor). The writer Fran Leibowitz, a darling of liberal intellectuals, said of OutWeek, “It’s damaging, it’s immoral, its McCarthyism, it’s terrorism, its cannibalism, it’s beneath contempt.”

ACT UP regularly protested that supposed friend of liberals, The New York Times, and ACT UP activists literally hijacked the set of Dan Rather’s live broadcast on the CBS Evening News, flashing a message opposing the first Iraq war and calling instead for money for AIDS research. The group disrupted trading at the New York Stock Exchange, unfurling a banner on the floor, invaded St. Patrick’s Cathedral with a civil disobedience action against the Catholic Church and shouted down Democratic presidential candidates, like Bill Clinton, getting promises from them on fighting the AIDS epidemic.

Years later, people herald ACT UP for the work it did, but they all seem to forget that in the moment there was enormous tension between the group and the larger progressive community — as well with the larger gay community — as people accused ACT UP of alienating allies by being confrontational. And that has actually been true of every protest movement for every cause: In the moment they’re criticized, while later they’re heralded. Black Lives Matter is doing exactly what it should be doing. And it is getting exactly the response it should be getting, bringing attention in every way possible to an urgent life and death issue.

Amy Schumer Hints She Will Push To Reduce Gun Violence

Comedian Amy Schumer suggested she is preparing to make a push against gun violence on Saturday, after a gunman killed two women and injured nine people during a showing of her latest movie in Lafayette, Louisiana last month.

Sarah Clements, whose mother survived the mass shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school in 2012, published a post on Medium calling on Schumer to speak out in the aftermath of the Lafayette shooting, which took place during a screening of “Trainwreck,” Schumer’s latest movie. In her reply on Twitter, Schumer referenced the victims and said she was preparing to do something:

21-year-old Mayci Breaux and 33-year-old Jillian Johnson were killed and nine others were injured July 23 by John Russell Houser, 59, who also killed himself during the incident.

Clements called Schumer “our generation’s epitome of what it means to be a strong, powerful, self-aware champion for the experiences and truths of being a woman,” and highlighted the particular challenges women face in pushing for gun control.

“The hatred and trolling of women fighting for gun reform is specifically twisted to become gendered threats and attacks. They reference rape, ‘setting us in our place,’ obeying men and shutting us up, and overall they simply exemplify the worst of a patriarchy obsessed with the symbol and purpose of guns,” she wrote on Medium. Clements also noted that women in the United States are much more likely to be killed by a person with a gun than are women in other high income countries and that women of color are disproportionately affected by gun violence.

After the shooting, Schumer tweeted that her heart was broken and her thoughts were with the victims of the attack. Earlier this year, she released a mock advertisement for birth control, advertising how difficult it was to obtain for women while guns remained relatively easy to get.

But Clements said that she knew Schumer could do more.

“Be a voice for our generation and for women — two groups who make up most of the victims of the gun violence in our country,” Clements wrote. “As you said and as I’ve learned, what truly matters in life is how you decide to write your own story. And in doing so, don’t apologize to the frightened millions who resent that they never had it in them to do it. Instead, show them it can be done.”

BRUH News: Warren Sapp Suspected In Vegas Domestic Violence Incident

Warren Sapp just needs to accept the notion that he may not be the ladies man he was during his NFL playing days and download the Tinder app.

With his prostitution case still pending in Arizona, the Las Vegas authorities are now investigating a domestic violence incident where the former Tampa Bay Buccaneer may be the antagonist.

Reports TMZ:

More trouble for Warren Sapp … the NFL Hall of Famer has been named a suspect in a domestic violence investigation in Las Vegas … TMZ Sports has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell us … a report has been filed against Sapp in which the 42-year-old is accused of getting into a physical altercation with a woman in a casino on April 28th.

We’re told cops met with the alleged victim at a different location after the incident and took a report … though Sapp was not present at that time. Law enforcement sources tell us the woman appeared to have suffered minor injuries.

Our sources tell us Sapp has NOT been arrested or charged with a crime at this point … though cops are still investigating.

It’s just the latest legal problem for Sapp … who was arrested for soliciting and assaulting two prostitutes in Arizona back in February.

We reached out to Sapp for comment … so far, no word back.

All these “allegations” don’t bode well for Sapp getting back to professional sports reporting gigs. He was fired from the NFL Network directly after the aforementioned story broke.

Trans Women Discuss Sisterhood And The Violence They Experience Every Day

Sisterhood is a revolutionary act for all women.

A new documentary series called “This Is Me,” created by WifeyTV with the help of executive producer Jill Soloway, explores the issues trans and gender non-conforming people face everyday. In the most recent episode called “And My Sisters,” artist/actor Van Barnes, performance artist Miss Barbie-Q and artist/filmmaker Zackary Drucker sit down to discuss their friendships and the daily threat of violence they experience as trans women.

“Trans women are born witty, thank God. It’s part of our survival,” Barnes says at the beginning of the video. In the video, the three women sit around a table creating “prayer pumps” to memorialize a sister of theirs who was recently murdered for being trans.

“It’s a revolutionary act to be an out, visible trans person,” Drucker says, to which Barnes added: “It’s a revolutionary act just to walk down the street [as a trans person].”

With one gender non-conforming person being murdered every 48 hours around the world, the violence these women face is very much real — and it informs their behavior.

“I feel like I have to walk around with my fists up again,” Miss Barbie-Q says. She goes on to recount a time two months prior when she was assaulted by a man on the subway, simply for the way she expresses her identity.

“I have to gauge people because if they’re staring at me for too long, I think ‘Do I have to watch my back when I walk away from this person?’ Because violence can go from zero to 90 in a heartbeat,” Barnes says.

She also tells the other women about a time she was assaulted by five men on the street: “One of [the men] put his arm out and clotheslined me, right at the neck… He grabbed me, picked me up, body slammed me. Every single one of those guys took a turn body slamming me,” Barnes said. “Every time I was getting lifted into the air I thought, ‘I hope they don’t paralyze me.’ And nobody came to my rescue.”

“How many trans people are going to have to die on the street before change happens?” Miss Barbie-Q asks the other women in the video. In January and February of 2015 alone, seven trans women were murdered in the U.S.

A sentiment towards the end of the video sums up how important these women’s friendships really are: “These relationships give me a sense of stability, they give me a sense that things are possible, they give a sense of wholeness.”

5 Siblings On What It Was Like To Grow Up With Domestic Violence — Including The Murder Of Their Mom (VIDEO)

Nearly 15 years ago, police officer Brenda Sexton was brutally beaten to death by her boyfriend, Sam Lupo, leaving five young children without their mother.

“I was 10 years old when Sam killed my mother,” recalls the oldest son, Tony, now 24. “That morning, I ran into my mother’s room … The lights were off in the room, and I tried to wake my mother up. I lifted the pillow up and at that point, I realized that my mother was no longer with us. Her face was caved in. I really couldn’t recognize her at all. It was a terrible sight to see. There was blood everywhere — on the floor, on the wall, on the bed, on the baseball bat that he used.”

Losing their mom at such a young age has had a profound effect on the five siblings.

“I miss my mom every day,” says Amanda, 27. “Not having my mom has prevented me from wanting to move forward and have children and have a big beautiful wedding, because those are supposed to be happy moments, and there is going to be a lot of sadness with her not being there.”

Likewise, Tony says, “It’s very hard for me to think about getting married and having kids, because my kids aren’t going to be able to meet their grandmother.”

Twenty-two-year-old Niko has struggled with feelings of guilt. “As a child, I felt that maybe I was part of the reason that domestic violence was going on within my household. But as I grew older, I realized it was not my fault.”

Robin McGraw, Dr. Phil’s wife and the founder of When Georgia Smiled, has made it her mission to help empower and protect women and children impacted by domestic violence and she has a huge surprise for this family in honor of their mother. Watch it here.

Country Star Sam Hunt’s ‘Take Your Time’ Shines Light On Domestic Violence

Sometimes country music is more than guitars and cowboy boots.

Country artist Sam Hunt’s song “Take Your Time,” off of his new album “Montevallo,” features a different storyline than most music videos. Instead of pairing his romantic ballad with a standard romantic plot line, Hunt uses his video to confront the topic of domestic violence. And the result is powerful.

The video features a young woman with an infant who’s in an abusive relationship. Hunt watches her from afar at a bar, laundry mat and gas station. Each time he sees the woman, her partner is shoving her and yelling at her.

At the end of the music video, the woman gets into her car to drive away from her partner, and he hits her in their front yard. Hunt finally intervenes. Watch the full video below.

While the reality of leaving an abusive partner is far more complicated than simply driving away, the music video shines a much-needed spotlight on the effects of domestic abuse.

In the U.S., intimate partner violence is something that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will face in their lifetimes. Three women are murdered every day by a current or former male partner and a woman is beaten every nine seconds in the U.S.

“With ‘Take Your Time,’ Hunt now brings country into the conversation [about domestic violence],” Mic’s Tom Barnes writes. “He adds the video to a growing collection of songs and artists attempting to stretch country to include more modern narratives.”

Job well done, Mr. Hunt.

Exploring the Phenomenon of Dating Violence

Many times a date can start out perfectly fine and no one would expect that it would turn into a nightmare, but it has happened and many times people get traumatized, hurt and even killed. Sometimes it only takes one word or a sarcastic remark to set it off. Other times it builds over a period of hours till finally a person feels unable to endure the tension of being rejected in some form any longer and erupts in a fit of hostile anger.

What You Probably Don’t Know About Domestic Violence and Abuse (VIDEO)

Ilene, 20, says her boyfriend, Matt, constantly accuses her of cheating on him, insults her appearance, calls her despicable names, and threatens to take their son and leave her homeless. Watch as Robin McGraw, Dr. Phil’s wife who’s a leading advocate of domestic violence awareness, says: “A lot of people think that domestic violence is if someone hits, kicks, [or] punches you. What we’re seeing here today is verbal and mental abuse.”

9 Warning Signs You Are In An Abusive Relationship

She tells Ilene, “You are in an abusive relationship. My instinct as a woman is to just run up there, and grab you, and run out the back door, and hide you and keep you from him. Of course, I can’t do that. I want to. But what we’re here to do today is to educate you and tell you that you are being abused. You do not have to be talked to this way and treated this way. You can demand that he treat you with dignity and respect. You can demand that he treat you in an honorable way. And you can demand of yourself that you will not accept that of him. You have the right to tell him: ‘You will treat me with respect. You will honor me.'”

Underwear Campaign Shares Powerful #BriefMessage About Violence Against Women

No, these women aren’t getting their panties in a bunch. They’re just getting the world to listen.

Across the globe, more than a third of women have been affected by physical or sexual violence, according to a 2013 WHO report, but those figures may be even higher considering victims’ reluctance to report such crimes.

To speak out against such widespread abuse, advocates are sharing powerful messages written on their underwear –- a campaign that launched in conjunction with Sunday’s International Women’s Day.

womens day

The performance piece is the brainchild of aleXsandro Palombo, an artist known for such subversive series as Disney princesses with disabilities and female cartoons depicted as domestic abuse victims.

Palombo put a call out asking women to express their messages against machismo and violence, using the hashtag #BriefMessage.

womens day

The campaign falls in line with this year’s theme for Women’s Day, which is focusing on a “the year of action” for gender equality, particularly in the economic realm.

While a lack of data has precluded researchers from quantifying exactly how violence translates into economic losses, experts agree that there is an undeniable connection.

Victims are saddled with medical bills, injuries that could prevent them from working and psychological issues that can affect their productivity, according to the UN.

womens day

It’s often the patriarchal systems that are to blame for subjugating women both economically and physically.

One-third of women in 33 developing countries say they can’t refuse sex with their partners, the World Bank reported. Intimate partner violence is more prevalent in impoverished households, but women with stable economic footing are better able to withstand such injustice. Property ownership, for example, helps to amplify a woman’s voice and increase her bargaining power in the household.

balls

Experts say that ending violence against women requires on-the-ground community efforts.

In her recent HuffPost blog, Chelsea Clinton, vice chair of the Clinton Foundation, outlined a three-pronged approach to end this epidemic.

Based on experts’ reports, Clinton pushed for changing long-held social norms, promoting solutions within the private sector and engaging with the military, universities, economists and other unlikely partners to create strong allies to stand up to violence.

womens day

“In order to celebrate and scale the gains, as well as understand where and why the gaps persist, we must continue to share with one another what works and what doesn’t,” Clinton wrote. “We must continue to work together and learn together so that we can create dynamic and lasting solutions to end violence against women and girls, in all its forms, both here and around the world.”
