Looking back, it was probably only a matter of time before London-based artist Tadas Maksimovas, with his enviably long locks and penchant for performance, did, erm, this:
The project, “Hair Music: The Experiment,” turns Maksimovas’ hip-length hair into the strings of a very unique instrument. With just a bit of twisting and glue, his strands morph into something akin to the tightly wound steel strings of a violin. To be fair, early stringed instruments used catgut, or animal intestines, so Maksimovas is just following in the tradition of musical history. From banality comes forth creativity.
“To show that anyone can play any instrument and anyone is welcome no matter how good he/she is, we made this experiment and played music with hair,” Maksimovas writes on his Behance profile. “A material that looks impossible to play with at first glance.”
The performance piece was part of Lithuania’s Street Musician’s Day, an annual event started by musician and actor Andrius Mamontovas. Watch the video above and let us know your thoughts on the coiffure in the comments.
