Who Will Bill Clinton Vote for?

I was just reading the transcript of Bill Clinton’s interview with Colbert. Based on that text alone, I wonder who Bill Clinton wants to win the presidency. Clinton talked about Trump’s “macho” appeal with the public.

But Clinton didn’t say macho was a bad thing.

Let me give you a hypothetical. Suppose I told you that two people were running for President and only one was macho. You know nothing else about the candidates. You must pick a leader based on that one data point alone.

Who do you pick to deal with ISIS, Congress, Putin, and Iran?

Right. Seventy-percent of the public just voted for macho. Women too.

Keep in mind that Hillary has been using Bill Clinton’s nut-sack as a speed bag since 1998. Bill Clinton is not feeling too macho himself. He’s an ex-president, but also a guy, and also a husband. Rarely has any man been so thoroughly emasculated by a wife in public. (You can say he earned it, but that doesn’t change the point.)

If you believe the new book by Roger Stone – a Trump supporter – Hillary has been a domestic abuser for years. One assumes that sort of accusation is an exaggeration, but you can never be sure by how much. And in any case, the story is out there, and the story alone probably doesn’t make Bill Clinton feel too macho. People will believe the accusations.

Now imagine that Hillary get elected. That takes some of the luster out of Bill’s presidency. It reminds me of the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers joke where Astaire was considered the star, but Rogers did her dance moves backwards and on heels. Again, macho is at stake.

And imagine Bill Clinton having to go from his current life – that one assumes is secretly phenomenal and rarely lonely – to being “Mister Mom” in the White House while his powerful wife locks up his chastity cage so he doesn’t embarrass her in front of the press.

If you think Bill Clinton wants Hillary to be president, you are either a woman who doesn’t know anything about men, or not paying attention. A Hillary Clinton presidency would thoroughly ruin Bill Clinton’s happiness. In my opinion, as a spouse-free male who can speak freely, there is not the slightest chance that Bill wants Hillary to be president. And as a trained hypnotist, and a student of linguistics, I would say he confirmed it to Colbert.

But just for fun, take a look at Clinton’s exact words when Colbert asked Bill if had asked Trump to run as a Republican in order to improve Hillary’s chances. Clinton confirms having a phone call with Trump, but he says it wasn’t about “running for office.“

Clinton also said to Colbert, “Yeah, I get credit for doing a lot of things I didn’t do like that,” Clinton said.

Parse that sentence. Clinton doesn’t deny asking Trump to run. All he says is that he often gets credit for doing things like thatthat he didn’t do.

Perfectly ambiguous, as intended. No one can accuse him of lying.

Here’s how I think the phone conversation between two Master Wizards of persuasion went. Keep in mind that under the Master Wizard Hypothesis, all Trump needed to know is whether Bill Clinton would use his own wizard skills to keep Trump from winning.

Trump: How are things with the wife?

Clinton: About the same.

Trump: That’s all I need to hear.

That’s how two Master Wizards of persuasion avoid talking about “running for office.”

Obviously I don’t know what is happening inside anyone’s head, or in private conversations. So this is just for fun, and to track the predictive power of the Master Wizard Hypothesis.

The Master Wizard Hypothesis says Bill Clinton will either talk Hillary out of running (because of the email scandal) or campaign for her in an uninspired way. What I predict will NOT happen, is Bill Clinton being fully engaged in her victory.

Look for stories saying Bill Clinton isn’t trying too hard to help his wife get elected.

If you read my book now, you have plenty of time to finish it before Christmas, so you can give it as a gift.

Ted Cruz Wants To Be Able To Vote Out Supreme Court Justices

After calling the last day “some of the darkest 24 hours in our nation’s history,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is now calling for Supreme Court justices to face elections.

In a National Review op-ed published Friday, Cruz chastised the high court for its decisions to reject a major challenge to Obamacare and to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide.

“Both decisions were judicial activism, plain and simple,” Cruz writes. “Both were lawless.”

To challenge that “judicial activism,” Cruz said he is proposing a constitutional amendment to require Supreme Court justices to face retention elections every eight years.

“The decisions that have deformed our constitutional order and have debased our culture are but symptoms of the disease of liberal judicial activism that has infected our judiciary,” Cruz writes. “A remedy is needed that will restore health to the sick man in our constitutional system. Rendering the justices directly accountable to the people would provide such a remedy.”

Under Cruz’s proposed amendment, justices would have to be approved by a majority of American voters as well as by the majority of voters in least half of the states. If they failed to reach the required approval rating, they would be removed from office and barred from serving on the Supreme Court in the future.

Cruz, who is running for president in 2016, was among many Republican candidates criticizing the justices after a strong week for liberals at the court.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R), who is expected to jump in the presidential race soon, also offered up a proposed constitutional fix to combat the Supreme Court’s marriage equality decision. In a statement, Walker argued for an amendment to define marriage as between one man and one woman — a proposal Cruz has also floated.

The Shameful Senate Vote That Denied Gay Veterans the Benefits They Earned

On Memorial Day, Americans remembered the men and women of our armed forces who fought and sacrificed to defend our freedom. Yet just 11 days later, shamefully, the U.S. Senate voted to deprive many combat veterans of the very freedom they risked their lives to protect.

The vote was on a measure I offered to end the prohibition on veterans’ benefits for many gay and lesbian service members. Currently, if you are a gay veteran living in a state that recognizes same-sex marriage, your family is entitled to full veterans’ benefits. However, a gay veteran with the exact same status — the same service record, same injuries, same family obligations — but living in a state that does not recognize same-sex marriage will receive far less.

A majority of Senators voted yes. But 42 Republicans, none of whom even bothered to speak in opposition, voted to continue the discrimination, and my amendment was defeated. Some of those Republicans had previously voted for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, so they retreated from their earlier stand against workplace discrimination against LGBT Americans.

My amendment was based on the Charlie Morgan Military Spouses Equal Treatment Act, which I introduced earlier this year. This bill was named for Charlie Morgan, a military veteran with more than 30 years of service in the New Hampshire and Kentucky National Guard. I first met Charlie in 2011, when she was returning from deployment in Kuwait, diagnosed for a second time with breast cancer. Concerned for the well-being of her wife Karen and their young daughter, Charlie became an outspoken critic of the Defense of Marriage Act, which at the time prohibited her spouse and child from receiving Department of Defense benefits she earned during her service.

Sadly, Charlie did not live to see the Supreme Court strike down the Defense of Marriage Act in 2013. Despite that court ruling, there are still provisions in the U.S. Code that allow state legislatures to indirectly deny federal benefits to many disabled veterans and their families solely because they are in a same-sex marriage.

In other words, many combat veterans are being denied their rights because of whom they love and where they live. In one reported case, a 50-percent-disabled combat veteran was initially approved for benefits for her wife and child but was later told by the Veterans Administration that she would not only lose a portion of her benefits but would also have future payments withheld to repay benefits already received.

The impacts of this discrimination on veterans’ families can be devastating. Monthly benefits are less. Spouses and children are not eligible for education assistance, VA medical care, and VA home loans. Families also lose survivor benefits, pension, and burial rights.

This brazen discrimination is unacceptable in today’s America. The callous attempt by 42 senators to turn our nation backward will not stand. We have arrived at a historic moment in the long struggle to secure equal rights for all Americans. Thirty-seven states have already recognized marriage equality. Many observers expect the Supreme Court, having already overturned the Defense of Marriage Act, will rule later this month that state prohibitions on same-sex marriage also violate the constitution.

So the Senate’s vote last week to allow continued discrimination against gay and lesbian veterans will not be the final word. Because of the courageous advocacy and leadership of Charlie Morgan and so many others, our nation is on the cusp of a historic expansion of civil rights. We hope for a Supreme Court ruling in favor of marriage equality, but that outcome is by no means certain. And in any case, why wait? It is time for Congress to ensure that all veterans, regardless of their sexual orientation, have equal access to the rights they risked their lives to defend.

Ireland Gay Marriage Vote Sees High Yes Turnout

* Ireland would be first to adopt gay marriage by referendum

* Polls indicate ‘Yes’ campaign win, turnout strong

* http://link.reuters.com/qax74w

* For Take A Look, please click on: (Updates with turnout, No side say signs positive for Yes)

By Padraic Halpin and Conor Humphries

DUBLIN, May 22 (Reuters) – Irish voters turned out in droves to cast ballots in a gay marriage referendum on Friday, with the high turnout likely to favor the Yes side seeking equality just two decades after the country decriminalized homosexuality.

With the once mighty Catholic Church’s influence ravaged by child abuse scandals, opinion polls indicated the proposal would pass by as much as two-to-one, making Ireland the first country to adopt same-sex marriage via a popular vote.

Irish national broadcaster RTE said it appeared to have been one of the highest ever turnouts for a referendum in the country, with turnout likely to reach 60 percent in Dublin. Only 39 percent voted nationally in an unsuccessful bid to abolish the upper house of parliament in 2013.

“It’s looking as if there’s a strong vote in urban areas, which would be more beneficial to the Yes side,” said Mattie McGrath, one of just two of Ireland’s 166 members of parliament who campaigned for a No vote.

“It’s all to play for tomorrow, but the Yes vote might shade it,” he said. There was no national exit poll and the first indications of the result were expected mid-morning on Saturday.

Yes campaigners also said the high turnout was a good sign.

“[I’m] beginning to dare to hope,” said Rory O’Neill, also known by his drag queen stage name Panti Bliss, who has been one of the faces of the Yes campaign.

The result may depend on whether younger voters, tens of thousands of whom registered as the campaign gathered momentum, turn out to cast their ballots.

The result, which will likely be declared late Saturday afternoon, may also reveal an urban/rural split. When voters legalized divorce by a razor thin majority in 1995, only five of the 30 constituencies outside Dublin backed the proposal.

International interest made the hashtag #VoteYes the top trending issue on Twitter and thousands of Irish expatriates made the trip home from Britain and as far afield as New York and Sydney to vote, groups encouraging the ‘Yes’ vote, using the hashtag #hometovote, said.

“I’ve been genuinely overwhelmed by the scale and the scope of the hometovote movement,” said Joey Kavanagh of the Get The Boat 2 Vote group, as he and about 50 others made the eight-hour journey by train and ferry from London to Dublin.

“It’s a very festive, celebratory atmosphere. At the moment we’re hanging up posters in the lounge and stringing up balloons. People are just very eager to get back.”

Gay marriage is backed by all political parties, championed by big employers and endorsed by celebrities, all hoping it will mark a transformation in a country that was long regarded as one of the most socially conservative in Western Europe.

The Catholic Church, whose doctrine teaches that homosexuality is a sin, has mainly limited its ‘No’ campaigning to sermons to its remaining flock, a marked contrast with active public opposition to similar moves in France and elsewhere.

Instead, lay groups have led the opposition, raising concerns over parenthood and surrogacy rights for gay couples. Many believe the recognition of the legal rights of same-sex couples in 2009 is sufficient.

“I don’t think it’s necessary because it’s covered in the civil partnership arrangements,” said Sean, a retiree voting in the leafy Dublin suburb of Blackrock. Only a couple of his friends were voting ‘Yes’, he said.

“I’m not convinced, I think it’s wrong and I don’t agree with it.” (Editing by Janet Lawrence, Bernard Orr)

And Yes I Said, Yes, I’ll Vote YES

On Friday May 22, I am going home to vote YES to Ireland’s historic Marriage Equality Referendum, giving its LGBT citizens the right to marry. As my mother used to say, “I never thought I’d live to see the day.”

My mother’s long dead, so I don’t know what she’d think of this proposal. Yet I’m sure she’d have something to say. When she was a young girl in Ireland, her mother unofficially adopted a little boy who was gay.

When pressed, Mammie said that her mother simply took Dan in from a large neighboring family. But she never said why. Then again this was the silent thirties, when no one in Ireland breathed a word about sexuality.

From snapshots found after Mammie’s death, I could see that Dan was a lively little boy with a big head of hair and mischievous eyes. From his letters, I could see he was smart. So, of course, he was groomed to be a priest.

It cost a lot to send a boy to a seminary. Yet a priest in the family gave respect and importance. “A pump in the yard and a priest by the hearth,” was a popular expression indicating spiritual and actual wealth — wealth that gave “Father” the slice of cake with the most icing and the chair nearest the fire.

Dan missed by a hair. He wasn’t a priest. He was nearly a priest. He went through the novitiate and the seminary all right. But on the day before his Ordination, Dan walked out the seminary door and took the bus back to Kerry. For me at twelve, this was the most shocking thing I had ever heard. Yet, Mammie claimed being educated by Jesuits was the next best thing to being a priest.

In the sixties, when I was a teen, come every August I’d eagerly wait for Dan to visit. Hot from Dublin, he’d arrive unannounced at the Home Place, pal or two in tow. Pals with slicked down hair, skinny ties and filtered cigarettes. They didn’t stay with us, but showed up every day to hang out with Dan and joke with me.

When we’d all go to town for tea and cakes, Dan would entertain my mother and me with slightly racy stories told in a plumy Brit accent. I’d roar laughing. She’d roar laughing. I knew he was gay. She must have as well. Though that word wasn’t around then. Everyone used “fairy.”

Dan and I became pals, quite like it must have been with he and my Mother. We’d write to each other all the time about the movies, the Royals and Marilyn Monroe. We’d send snaps back and forth. Me dressed like Don Draper’s daughter. Dan dressed in a black suit and tie. He may as well have been a priest.

In the seventies Dan was working for the Irish government and ensconced in a posh brownstone in Dublin. He had a new troop of pals, one of whom called him “my huz.” And Dan would fall to pieces laughing. Yet they were never seen together. These were fiercely repressive times for the gay community in Ireland. So there was no public mention of homosexuality, much less marriage.

By now Dan had gone old and was not so funny. The man who called him “my huz” would come and go, but they never seemed happy. I was older, too. Old enough for Dan to tell me that he was gay.

It was autumn. I was staying with him in the posh house on Waterloo Road. He said he wanted to tell me something and suggested a walk around the block. I remember I was wearing a Betsey Johnson dress.

“Alice Marie,” he said. “I want to tell you that I’m gay.”

I can still hear the leaves crunching under our feet. Not wanting to make a big deal about it, I said, “I suspected as such. I’ve lots of gay friends and it’s OK.” We walked on. Dan looked crestfallen at my lack of shock. We talked no more of it, and he went on to tell me he was sober. AA meetings were his life.

A few months later I got a call from a distant cousin who said Dan had died. Dropped dead on a Dublin street. She had no details. I have no idea how Dan died, the street he died on, who buried him or where he is buried. It was a mystery, just like he himself was.

Dan is why I am voting YES.

YES for all the Dan’s all over Ireland who want the right to marry.

YES for Dan and his once-upon-a-time huz, who, given half the chance, would have married Dan and stayed with him to the end.

As Molly Bloom rightly said: “Yes, I will. Yes.”

Will YES win? Tune in next week.

Why You Should Vote for the Chanel Flap Bag for #ItBag2015

CHANEL

Expand

Spread the word and let your voice be heard: A new era of the It bag is upon us! In the name of democracy—and of course, fashion—we’re holding an election to name the #ItBag2015. Meet the 10 powerful and chic purses campaigning to revolutionize your look this year and, vote for which one you think should take home the title.

In the great It Bag Election, consider me an advocate for Chanel’s spring 2015 Flap Bag. Sure, it wasn’t born in the USA—truth be told, none of the really good It bags are—but with its patches and peace signs, buttons and boucle, not to mention slogans like “Make fashion not war” emblazoned in what looks like rebel-without-a-cause permanent marker (the kind I used to color my Converse with during study hall), it embodies that boho, all-American sixties spirit. This bag is no nose-to-the-grindstone Tracy Flick, campaigning for your vote with the goal of winning at any and all costs. Instead, it’s Forrest Gump’s Jenny, denouncing our participation in the Vietnam War and running into the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, all long blonde hair bouncing and body swathed in suede and shearling—flashing that proverbial peace sign.

It’s anti-war, pro-choice, and a big believer in free speech and free love (obviously). “It’s all about the street,” said Karl Lagerfeld at his spring show. And nothing could be more true: The Flap Bag has advocates from Haight-Ashbury to the Champs-Élysées. It originated on the Boulevard Chanel after all (the Paris streetscape Lagerfeld dreamed up and constructed as his runway—an almost perfect replication of reality, down to the larger-than-life Haussmannian buildings). The setup served as the stage for his model-led fashion protest, complete with megaphones, boom boxes, and rallying cries. “Tweed we need!,” “Boys should get pregnant too!,” and “Feministe mais feminine!” are just some of the slogans these models turned activists touted while clutching their Flap Bags on the picket line. Caught up in this fight for-your-right spirit, I pledge allegiance to Chanel, and ask that when you go to cast your vote for #ItBag2015 on January 27, you do the same. Vive la révolution!

Vote now for Chanel’s Flap bag for It Bag of the Year!
