Worth The Wait: Thanos & Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Deliver In ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Avengers: Infinity War

Source: Marvel Studios/Disney / Marvel Studios/ Disney

It took 10 years but Thanos has finally arrived to deliver our favorite superheroes the fade. Anxiety levels have been on high for Marvel fans as they wondered for years about this film and if directing duo of Anthony Russo and Joe Russo could deliver the goods. We are happy to report they did and then some.

Avengers: Infinity War is as epic as predicted and what would you expect from a movie featuring all of Marvel Studios titular characters. To bring everyone up to speed quickly, Infinity War is a culmination of all of the Marvel Studios films leading up to the epic showdown with the Mad Titan aka Thanos and his quest for the precious and powerful Infinity Stones. There is no need for character building in this film because fans already know what is at stake and are well acquainted with all of the players except one…Thanos and his loyal and very dangerous disciples.

With everything already set up, it allows the Russo Brothers to jump into the story immediately and pick right up where Thor: Ragnarok left off. A movie as massive as Avengers: Infinity War could be confusing as there are so many stories to be told due to the fact there are so many dynamic characters.  They masterfully find a way to keep your interests peaked in each character’s quest as they all lead to the climactic showdown with the feared Marvel villain.

Avengers: Infinity War

Source: Marvel/Disney / Marvel/Disney

Each character from Iron Man (Robert Downy Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) down to Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen)  has their moment to shine as well some more than others but not one of them wasted their on-screen opportunity to wow moviegoers. Their on-screen chemistry was also on point helping to deliver well-timed comedic moments that worked every time in spite of the disastrous circumstances around them. BUT it’s the sense of fear all of the heroes convey that we have not seen from them as they learn that this battle is has more dire consequences than any other they have been a part of. The Russo Brothers manage to have this same fear rub off on the viewer. But honestly the star of this movie wasn’t the Earth’s mightiest heroes, it was the universes greatest threat.

Josh Brolin is masterful as Thanos who after this film an argument could be made easily that he is one of, if not THE greatest MCU villains ever. Move over Killmonger, Loki, and Hela.  Brolin’s voice gives the CGI enhanced character much-needed life as there are moments viewers can honestly feel some form of empathy for the villain on his conquest to vanquish everyone. There were even times when Thanos was just as much sad as he was hell-bent on wiping out everyone with the snap of his fingers.

Avengers: Infinity War manages to carry on the consequential feeling that Ryan Coogler did for Black Panther so effortlessly. The 2h 40m epic is exhausting and that is by no means a bad thing cause it takes on you on an emotional rollercoaster. It’s the films climatic battle in the beautiful fictional world of Wakanda that will leave you speechless. Once the film ended there was a wave of silence that I could honestly say as avid Marvel movie watcher I never seen or experienced before. This isn’t just a colorful comic book movie this is an experience and it will require a lot of processing after viewing. Make no mistake Avengers: Infinity War was worth the 10-year wait and is the Avengers movie fans have been clamoring for. Hell, some fan reactions that hit Twitter last night can attest to that.

Avengers: Infinity War Okoye & T'Challa

Source: Marvel/Disney / Marvel/Disney

Where the movie belongs in the pantheon of Marvel’s cinematic gems is on the viewer but that distinction is based solely on the viewer. There is no doubt this film deserves to be in the question when it comes to which one of the films were the greatest without a doubt.

Oh don’t be that person and leave when the movie is over, you will be rewarded for sitting through those credits.

Final Verdict: Masterful

Jennifer Love Hewitt Wants A ‘Can’t Hardly Wait’ Reunion Movie

“Can’t Hardly Wait” made its theatrical debut in 1998. Seventeen years later, the film’s star Jennifer Love Hewitt thinks it’s time for a reunion movie.

Hewitt, who played theoretical dream girl Amanda Beckett, was apparently inspired by a screening of the movie at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Forever Cemetery this weekend. She tweeted out how proud she was to be part of the film, which also starred Ethan Embry, Lauren Ambrose, Seth Green, Peter Facinelli and Jaime Pressly.

Recognizing that we’re living in the era of the sequel, Hewitt seized her moment and declared that now is the time for a reunion.

Ryan Reynolds Premieres ‘Deadpool’ Trailer; It Was Worth The Wait

Unlike his character in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” Ryan Reynolds doesn’t need to keep his mouth sewn shut about “Deadpool” anymore.

An early version of the trailer debuted at Comic-Con and a teaser for it has already gone viral, but on Tuesday, Reynolds finally premiered the official Red Band trailer for the “X-Men” spinoff on “Conan.” And (spoiler alert!), it was amazing.

The official trailer was slightly different than the one shown at Comic-Con, but it still had all the insane action, inappropriate language and DMX background music we’ve been waiting for.

To debut the trailer, “Conan” actually had to change its parental guidance rating to TV-MA for more mature audiences. Yup. You read that right: “more mature” audiences. Whoever came up with that distinction clearly doesn’t know much about “Deadpool.”

“Deadpool” is set to hit theaters in February 2016.

News in Brief: Family Enters Crisis Talks After Learning Restaurant Has 45-Minute Wait

SKOKIE, IL—Convening several steps back from the hostess stand for an ad hoc round of discussions, members of the Kalpern family reportedly entered crisis talks Wednesday after learning that the wait for a table at the Cheesecake Factory would be 45 minutes. “Okay, we have two real options as I see it: We could tough it out here or head down to Village Crossing where they have a Chili’s and an Outback Steakhouse,” said father and chief negotiator Mark Kalpern after tabling a motion by his daughter that they just leave and pick up a pizza on the way home. “Forty-five minutes is pretty long, and we’ll need to find Grandma a place to sit if we stay here and wait. Of course, by the time we get to another restaurant and see what the wait is there, it might end up taking just as long. So …

Lesbian ad in India Shows Change Does Not Wait on Courts

The Kashish film festival in Mumbai just completed its sixth edition. It does not call itself a “human rights” film festival or a “diversity” film festival or an “equality for all” film festival. It shuns all euphemisms and calls itself plain and simple the Mumbai International Queer Film Festival. Its website URL is an unabashed mumbaiqueerfest.com.

On the closing night of this year’s Kashish, Mumbai’s beautiful Art Deco Liberty Theater, run by the Hoosein family since 1947, was buzzing. India’s only transgender/hijra dance troupe brought the house down with their sequin-spangled Helen numbers. Former Mr Gay India, Sushant Divgikar was strutting the stage basking in the spotlight. And the entire theatre was on its feet as Rainbow Voices, an LGBT choir from Mumbai, all sleek in black and silver, some of the boys with heavy eyeliner and a flower tucked behind the ear Salma Sultan style, belted out Hum Honge Kaamyaab. It was a bona fide goosebump moment.

But the real eye-opener was the chief guest on the occasion. In a column in Mid-Day, Malavika Sangghvi, one of the festival’s judges, quotes the chief guest as telling the crowd, “To the Kashish family, I would like to say that the road ahead will not be easy. You will meet resistance. But on my part I will assure you that I will stand for you, I will stand with you whether we may succeed or not.”

It might sound like boiler plate cheerleading, de rigueur for such occasions. Except the speaker was Shaina NC, a spokesperson for the ruling BJP party, most often seen on television defending the government’s stance.

All this in a country where homosexual sex has been re-criminalized. And Shaina NC’s own colleague, the Home Minister Rajnath Singh has categorically said his party is against homosexuality because it is an “unnatural act.”

And now again in a country where homosexual sex is technically illegal, an ad for “contemporary ethnic apparel” featuring a lesbian couple has gone viral. There’s nothing coy about the ad. There’s no need to read between the lines. The couple is clearly a couple. There’s even a hint of short-hair long-hair butch-femme in the relationship. There is a casual sleep-tousled intimacy about them, what Vikram Johri correctly describes in Daily O as “everyday lived-in-ness”. They laugh, tease each other, flirt as they go about getting nervously ready for the Big Visit. One set of parents is on their way to the house for the first time. The ad is lovely, billowing curtains and all, hitting all the right notes without shrill sloganeering. And the kurtas are showcased nicely, neatly woven into the narrative. All this comes close on the heels of an international hoopla about India’s first gay matrimonial ad carried by Mid-Day.

What gives?

The Supreme Court proposes, but Indian society (at least the part that reads Mid-Day and likes to shop for trendy orange kurtas) disposes?

What the Supreme Court did not realize when it reinstated Section 377 which criminalized “sex against the order of nature” in 2013, was that the society has come a long way. Like toothpaste it just cannot be pushed back into the tube.

This Anouk ethnic apparel ad is yet another example of that momentum of social change. And it’s not the only one though it’s being incorrectly hailed as the first Indian “lesbian” ad. Hindustan Times wore its “openness” on its sleeve in an ad where a young man whacks his friend with a rolled up newspaper for staring at a gay couple and making fun of them. Vodafone tiptoed into gay territory in an ad which seemed to say it all with sideways glance. Fastrack had its own girl-on-girl ad with a shocking pink changing closet and described itself as “a window into the young progressive mindset of today’s youth. A mindset that isn’t bogged down or defeated by society’s rules.”

What is actually striking about these ads are the comment boards on Youtube. India’s comment boards are hardly a bastion of civility. But by and large the tenor of these comments is “awesome”. One commenter says about the Fastrack ad “3 intolerant homophobes disliking this” while another says “They should make a male version.” The top comment on the HT ad reads “thanks some faith in media restored”. In an age of “presstitutes” that’s high compliment indeed.

These companies want to cash in on the coolness factor and in a way, the retrograde 377 verdict, allows them to appear even more cool. The fact is they do not risk that much. It’s not like heterosexual women will wonder if an Anouk kurta makes them a little too lesbian. And there’s little likelihood that the VHP or the All India Muslim Personal Law Board will launch a BoycottMyntra campaign for uploading the Anouk ad. They are too busy with Yoga Day, beef bans and defending 377 in court. And the internet is a virtual space which makes it safer for such experiments. Unlike a real gallery which can be vandalized and an artist beaten up as openly gay painter Balbir Krishnan found out in 2012.

A company like Anouk deserves all the credit for making an ad like The Visit. Hopefully some version of this will show up on television where its reach will be far wider and its impact far greater. But the real test of courage for corporates remains elsewhere. Will these companies also show the same openness when it comes to their own HR polices? When it comes to non-discrimination among their employees? When it comes to partner benefits? Or at that point will a company point to Section 377, plead helplessness, and put all this “Bold is Beautiful” rhetoric into cold storage?

There is no magic formula for social change. Sometimes it’s led by the courts. The US courts dragged the American South kicking and screaming into desegregation. That was a time where the courts were ahead of much of society. By the time those same courts struck down sodomy laws, society had moved way ahead of the law. No one batted an eyelid. Now the opposition to same-sex marriage in the US is declining steadily. That same tango between society and the law is happening in India. Sometimes one leads and sometimes the other.

And if there’s anything we should read into the Anouk ad it’s this – that just because the court is out of step right now, it does not mean the society won’t keep dancing ahead – one ad, one book, one crowdfunded film festival at a time.

Some day inevitably the father-figures of the court too will catch up. And then like the young woman in the Anouk ad, society will say “Papa, you’ve reached? We’ll just come down.”

David Chang’s New Fried Chicken Sandwich Is Worth the Wait

Every summer, there’s one trendy food item—the Cronut, the ramen burger, Chocolate Chip Cookie Shots—that keeps New Yorkers waiting in long lines under the blazing sun. And now, 2015’s most prized creation is finally here: The fried chicken sandwich at Fuku.

Fuku, an East Village restaurant that opened today, is owned by celebrity chef David Chang and is the newest addition to his Momofuku empire, which includes Noodle Bar, Ssäm Bar, Ko, and the Milk Bar shops. For his newest venture, Chang’s ambition stretches beyond a single brick and mortar—he hopes to turn Fuku into a high-end fast-food chain (think Shake Shack for chicken or a fancy Chick-fil-A).

Fuku chicken sandwich and fries.

A photo posted by Nick Solares (@nicksolares) on

I arrived five minutes before the restaurant’s opening, and I was the tenth person in line. The service was relatively quick, especially for opening day, and the food is actually pretty worthy of the avalanche of impending hype. The chicken is spicy, but not overly so, and it’s remarkably juicy. The massive piece of thigh meat is served on a classic Martin’s potato roll with mild pickles, and a spread of savory butter. It’s elevated Chick-fil-A—without any of the homophobia—what more could a New Yorker want?

There are fries, too, of course, which are done in the style of the potato wedge. If sublimely greasy fare isn’t your bag, there’s a vegetarian option—the Fuku salad, which includes farro, kale, shiso, sesame seeds, and mandarin oranges. The restaurant also offers a full cocktail menu, including a michelada made with Momofuku’s signature ssäm sauce.

By the time noon rolled around, the line had snaked around the block. There was at least one person working as an on-demand delivery boy through Postmates, but the rest of the early crowd was made up of food bloggers and tourists.

A pair that was visiting from Los Angeles, Samantha Duenas and Jason Stewart, got caught up in the early buzz. “We’re staying a few blocks away and I usually never do a line for food,” Stewart said. Duenas added, “We figured, we read about it, we’re a few blocks away, why don’t we jump in line for David Chang?” Amid the tourists and gourmands, there was a fair number of native New Yorkers in the crowd. Kelly Roman, who works at Wilhelmina Models, would normally “never” wait too long for a must-have treat—but she was making a special trip on behalf of her coworkers.

As it stands, the restaurant is only open from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday through Sunday. (This bit of exclusivity will surely only increase demand.) But, according to a Momofuku rep, there’s a possibility that the hours could change. Here’s hoping for some late-night fried chicken.

Why (Most) Newly Divorced Parents Should Wait to Date

Life changes dramatically when divorce happens.

And divorce does happen, like an affliction, a disease leaving scars that fade with time but never fully disappear. At least it felt that way for me. At the age of 31, with a two year old son, divorce left me scarred by the transformation it forced upon me. I was no longer a wife. I lived on my own for the first time, had my own mortgage, saw my child only 50 percent of the time, and learned how to fix hot water heaters, toilets, and broken sprinklers (because I had to). Dad showed me how to turn off the circuit breaker, shut off the water and a heap of other home-ownership things I never wanted to know. I was also financially dependent on myself since my ex and I opted not to pursue spousal or child support.

I was definitely overwhelmed and quickly learned there’s very little easing-in to divorce.

What’s more, “motherhood” and “dating” suddenly took residence in my life at the same exact time and were no longer mutually exclusive. Like so many newly single parents, I struggled to consider a new life where the focus wasn’t solely on family and career but included new independence and a dating scene I hadn’t considered for twelve years. The sweetness and purity of motherhood were sharply juxtaposed against the sexy dating scene. One day, I was changing diapers and rocking my child to sleep. The next, I was wearing a little black dress and heels while trying to rock-out a new life.

The paradox was unsettling.

Reconciling how HotWheels cars, pacifiers and baggies of crushed cheerios shared space in my purse with valet parking tickets and new tubes of red lipstick, was staggering. The world was off-kilter and I felt as if I was slipping over the edge with nothing to anchor me. I struggled (oh, how I struggled) as I laughed and cried at the cruel absurdity of it all. I often asked, “Is this really my life?” But I already knew the answer — this was my life, a life filled with uncertainty and a barrage of constant change (and broken garbage disposals and roof leaks). And dating.

Like many newly single moms, I was compelled to join the dating scene to fill the void of my ex’s absence and escape an empty house’s silence. It seemed reasonable. Even well-intentioned family and friends suggested I “get out there” and “meet someone new” and “have fun.”

So I did. Or, rather, I tried.

I got dressed-up on nights I didn’t have my son, met dates at restaurants and shared edited versions of myself while I listened to theirs. You know, dating. I worried about everything from whether to split the bill, to whether he thought I was pretty enough, to whether he would drug my cocktail (all while worrying about what my ex was feeding our son.) When I returned to a too-quiet home, I called mom to tell her I was home safely from the dangerous dating scene where clawing serial killers were ready to kidnap me, the girl who was newly divorced from the second boy she’d ever kissed.

I was so naïve.

Dating as a divorced mom felt like an odd betrayal. Even though I dated on nights I didn’t have my son, he was always on my mind. Taking attention away from him (even when he wasn’t with me) felt wrong. What’s more, finalized divorces have no correlation to emotional healing. My marriage ended before my heart fully caught-up to the finality of it all. And while I realize many divorced moms and dads are eager to date and invigorated by the prospect of meeting someone knew, I just wasn’t one of them yet.

When it comes to life’s more humbling experiences, dating as a divorced parent was second only to divorce itself. I felt the need to explain I was a mother, my most important role. Sure, I had a career and hobbies, but when I met a man the words, “I have a two year old,” burst from my lips. I felt compelled to explain away my divorce and how I ended-up a young, single mom. I felt the need to downplay my divorce (“Oh, you know, it happens to so many people”) or to apologize for it (“Well, I’m not proud of it but it happened to me, so…”)

Looking back, I lacked the confidence and self-esteem necessary to date with dignity. No one should date when they’re self-conscious of their past. I should have waited until I’d come to terms with my mistakes, learned from them, and moved forward wisely. I should have eased into dating by going out with friends in familiar environments. I should have spent time as an observer of the scene, not a participant. I should have adapted to my new life without the added pressure of finding someone else. Oh, the retrospective clarity of should have.

Parenthood and dating can co-exist but those who manage them well are not struggling to acclimate to newly single lives. Those ready to date are no longer mired in a post-divorce world but have adapted, grown and stretched into their new normal. They’ve come to terms with any guilt they may feel as parents and found ways to balance time with their children and time they’re alone. They’ve progressed from being overwhelmed by divorce to reconciling its occurrence. And they’ve healed to where parenthood and dating no longer collide but can share space in their life so they can mindfully and healthfully meet someone new.
