“First, you need to lose at least twenty pounds. Second, you should use about half as much rouge and lipstick. And third, I’m an artist – the doctor’s

  • CNN classic: Assume Trump is a racist and support that premise with fake news
  • Book recommendation: How Healing Works by Wayne B. Jonas
  • Placebo effect in larger controlled studies VERY CLOSE to effective results of the real drug

  • Even if you’re a doubter, placebos can still help more than just 30% in some environments
  • Why?
  • What factors strengthen or weaken that surprising result?

'What’s With Wheat?’ is a hard hitting investigation into the growing epidemic of wheat & gluten intolerance, and why after eating wheat for thousands of years, it has been linked to so many health problems. Tens of thousand of people are suffering with ill health and don’t realise it’s a result of the food choices they are making. They often assume it is part of their genetic make-up or the fact of just getting older. The story of wheat, is the story of food, people need to become educated, knowledgeable and aware. Wheat can certainly be the issue for many. Our wheat has changed dramatically, it doesn’t even resemble what it used to look like. We have seen an increase in celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity. There is also strong connections between gluten and autoimmune diseases. Bridget Foley’s Diary: What’s Next for Lanvin?

Can Lanvin make a comeback? That is front-and-center among the many questions swirling around what should prove a fascinating spring 2018 season. While fashion’s current revolving-door mode has set up numerous designer debuts, including those of Clare Waight Keller at Givenchy and Natacha Ramsay-Levi at Chloé, curiosity surrounding the house founded by Jeanne Lanvin in 1889 is unique for two reasons: First, its current fashion identity as perceived by the majority of the fashion-buying population is defined by the work of Alber Elbaz rather than by any concept of its founder; and second, what, from the outside looking in, appears to be a business-side philosophy and infrastructure not intrinsically supportive of the creative process and perhaps lacking a baseline pragmatism.
Given those two issues, is it possible for Lanvin to regain its not-so-long-ago luster? It is, but it won’t be easy. To the first point, exchanges with several retailers revealed a unanimous thought: There remains a customer who still craves the work of Alber Elbaz, and is currently underserved by luxury market alternatives.
Incoming creative director Olivier Lapidus arrived with high hopes and enthusiasm for his new role. In a conversation with my colleague Joelle Diderich, he professed no knowledge of the

What’s the Secret to K-Pop Beauty? One Vogue Editor Gets a Hallyu Star Makeover in Seoul

kpop makeover

“Please hold still,” one woman tells me, lifting a still-smoking match to my eyes. Nearby, another begins sharpening a small pink-handled knife that will slice the tops and sides off my brows. To my left, a man with immaculate bleach-blond hair sits, looking bored, listlessly thumbing through his iPhone, as three attendants swab his face with no less than 10 serums, emulsions, and creams. But no matter—he’ll be back here tomorrow to do it all over again.

Welcome to the world of K-pop beauty, where it takes three hours to apply your everyday face. Yes, three hours—or so I’m told when I call up reception at Jennyhouse, which has quickly become the go-to salon for Korean celebs since it opened in 2002. These days, of course, it’s also a destination for fans who would love to look just like their idols—including Chinese couples who fly here to get K-styled for wedding photos. And so, out of curiosity, I, too, book an appointment for a complete Hallyu star makeover on a recent trip to Seoul.

There are now three Jennyhouse locations in Cheongdam, the city’s most rarefied neighborhood, but I head to Olive, a two-story violet town house that’s said to draw the most stars (that’s no lie, by the way—on a recent Friday, I sat next to Jessi, the Lucky J rapper, and VIXX boy-band members Hyuk and Ravi). Though K-pop is known for its wild, over-the-top visuals, makeup artist Hee Jeong Lee tells me that these days her idol clients and their fans are requesting a more pared-down face.

“We used to do a heavier, more made-up aesthetic, but now when people come to our shop and ask for the Korean style, it’s more of a natural look,” she says, pointing to two of her clients, actresses Lee Min-jung and Song Ji-hyo, whose faces are most often requested by guests. Paging through hairstylist Jongsoo Lim’s portfolio, it’s clear that a more laid-back style is also the key to a K-pop mane. “Right now, it’s about a light wave instead of over-the-top glamour,” he says. “Over the past four or five years, we’ve moved toward the kind of look you could do yourself at home.”

So what does it take to get that not-quite-natural look? Anywhere from two to five hours—still. For Hallyu stars, a flawless complexion comes first and foremost. So we begin with a thorough double cleansing with oil and cream face washes, followed by 20 minutes of layering moisturizers: first toner, then essence, then serum, then emulsion, then cream, then more emulsion, and so on, swept and dotted lightly across the face with plush sponges and cotton pads. Vaseline is smothered on my lips, then Lee takes a dollop of heavy sun cream and emulsion, mixed together on the back of the hand with a palette knife, and swabs it directly onto my cheeks. Three dots of highlighter go under each eye, then a base, more emulsion—“It helps create a smooth texture”—and a thick coat of foundation. During 10 minutes of vigorous concealing (of stray spots, freckles, dark circles, and lines I never knew I had), I remember how, the day before, a stranger told me I had great skin—apparently not, by K-pop standards.

The secret here, I learn, is extreme layering: Lashes are curled twice with that smoking match, then topped with individual falsies and curled again with mascara. Light dustings of contour are topped off with emulsion, then dusted a second and third time. The eyeliner alone takes about 15 minutes: pencil, liquid, and gel, painstakingly shaped into an angular black wing. But once I reach Lim’s hair station, things move faster. I spend only 40 minutes in the chair, moving through rapid curling, texturizing at the root with a round brush, and ample sprays of Elnett. Though I’d originally suggested a wild updo or crazy cut, this would, I learn, be antithetical to the idol way. “You want to look fresh and pretty,” Lim chides as he sweeps my hair into a long ponytail with a hint of volume.

After carefully placing and re-placing a single wavy curl that falls by my face, we’re done—et voilà! Though up close I look strange and too heavily made up, in the soft glow of the salon’s incandescent lights, I feel K-pop pretty. Plus, as my own family tells me later that day, “You’ve never looked more Korean.” As far as K-styling goes, I’d call that an unqualified success.

Blended Family Forum: What’s in a Name?

What’s in a name? Well, when you are in a blended family, a lot! When we remarry, we tend to focus our time and attention on blending the two families; we establish relationships, form new traditions, meld. And that’s all great. We should do those things. We want to feel like a family and find that family dynamic amongst the difficulty of step parenting, forming new sibling relationships and trying to co-parent with the other parents (the ones who don’t live in our house).

But we have to be careful to remember something. Before we blended, our children had established identities. They identified as a family with their biological parents and siblings. Everyone (in general) shared the same last name. When divorced parents remarry, the waters of identity can be muddied for the kids.

2015-09-24-1443122834-2511900-dayofwedding.jpg
All of us divorced parents know the identity crises we have faced when learning to be single adults again. Who are we? Who do we want to be? Who are our friends? And divorce can cause identity crises for everyone involved — especially children. When a child’s name is different than their mother’s, which is true in my case, it can be confusing for younger children and a glaring reminder of the separation of parents for older children.

When people have identified our family as “The Denhams” either verbally or even on Christmas cards, my boys have pointed out that they are not Denhams, they are Reostis. No one makes this mistake with any ill will or intent, they just generally identify families by the parents’ names. In the beginning, I didn’t pay as much attention to the comments from the boys because, of course they are Reostis. But they live with a man who, while he treats and loves them as his own, is not their biological father. And has a different name from them. And people often assume (especially if they don’t know their dad) that when they refer to their dad, they are talking about my husband. It is a conflicting place for them to be — not wanting to discount my husband, but also wanting to acknowledge their father.

I have a friend at church who ALWAYS greets our family as the “Denham Reostis.” It is so important because it acknowledges all of our kids. When people say just “the Denhams,” three of our children do not feel identified. So blended families, be aware of the nuance of identity — sign cards with both names, call yourselves with both names and let people know that is how you want to be recognized. Friends of blended families, be sensitive to knowing the last names of the kids and using those names when you identify them.

We are the Denham-Reostis. That is our family name.

ALTERNATIVE PICK – J-Delice – “What’s Mine Is Yours” ft Chinx

Finding success with his radio single “What’s Mine Is Yours” ft Chinx on several sites earlier this year, J-Delice has earned the opportunity to perform as a special guest with Juicy J on his THC Tour at Irving Plaza in New York City. Since then, the single has received great reviews across the Northeast from syndicated radio stations JAM’N 94.5, POWER 105.1 and more.

“What’s Mine Is Yours” ft Chinx has been in rotation through the hands of DJ Self, DJ Envy, DJ Suss One and other well known DJs. Giving the song a visual treatment by airing the music video on WorldStarHipHop has helped reached a wider audience and gained even more popularity with the late Chinx feature.

Ashley Madison Exposes Cheaters, Revealing What’s Missing in Many Marraiges

Yesterday, I signed up on the dating website AshleyMadison.com. If you hadn’t heard of it before this week as the place married people go to cheat on their spouses, then you probably did this week after a cyber attack by some morally-righteous online vigilantes hacked its website and exposed the its members. All 39 million of them! My reason for registering wasn’t to have an affair (which I hope is obviously given I’m sharing that with you), but to prepare for a TV interview I did earlier today on the hacking scandal of the month (there’ve been a lot lately).

As I scrolled through a few pages of listings, I was struck by the multitude of people (primarily men) who are not only interested in hooking up with a stranger, but who have no intention to leave their marriages which, obviously, can’t be all that rewarding. Listing after listing stated, “not looking to leave marriage,” “no commitment only sex,” or “casual affair only.” It provided a revealing and distressing insight on the state of many marriages today.

Even if the quoted registration numbers are inflated (which I suspect they are given the ease at which I could create a fake account with a made-up email address), there’s no doubt there are millions of people who are staying in marriages that leave them hungry for intimacy, both sexual and emotional.

For the record, I am not a marriage expert. However, having been married (to the same man) for nearly 22 years I’ve gained a few insights on what it takes to create and sustain and genuinely rewarding (affair-free) marriage. Also, having coached many people, largely women, whose marriages have broken down, I believe that the reason so many marriages fail, and so many people seek relationships outside of them, is because they lack one or more of the following.

Commitment

Let’s face it, no one feels madly in love with anyone forever. Marriage takes a deep and sincere commitment to ride out the storms and make it work, even when the other person fails to be all of who we want them to be. If you aren’t committed for the long haul — for the “good times and bad,” “richer or poorer,” “in sickness and in health” — then you really should not get married.

Truthfulness

One of the biggest reasons relationships fall apart is that people are not honest with each other. Fear of looking foolish, appearing needy, being rejected, humiliated or simply of feeling vulnerable keeps them from sharing what’s on their heart, or asking for what they truly want, saying no to what they don’t or simply just airing a frustration or annoyance. It’s the small hurts we often feel aren’t worth talking about that, deprived of oxygen, gradually build up to big resentments. As they do, distance grows, intimacy erodes and resignation and resentment can set up residence in hearts and homes.

Kindness

“Sometimes genuine kindness calls us to share what’s on our heart even when we know it will hurt someone to hear it.”

Of course being truthful doesn’t mean we should share everything we think. But before we cite kindness as our reason for withholding the truth, we have to ask how doing so will ultimately serve us, the other person, and the future health of the relationship we share. Sometimes we have to risk hurting feelings for the sake of the marriage we want to create; sharing what’s on our hearts, even when we know it will be difficult for the other person to hear. At other times, kindness calls us to say nothing and instead to ask questions, to listen for what is not being said and to put into action the love that brought us together in the first place.

Compromise

Every great partnership will sometimes require giving up what we want now as an individual for what we want most as a couple or family. Sometimes that means doing more than our fair share or putting others needs ahead of our own. Not all the time. Not forever. But for now. Like ordering Chinese when you really want Indian or moving interstate when you’d rather stay where you are (like I’ve done more than a few times!), or calling your firstborn son Hector after your father-in-law when you really preferred Sam. And yes, sometimes even having sex when you don’t feel like it — not because you are submissive, but because it’s an expression of love that your partner values.

The truth is that people don’t cheat in marriages because they don’t care about their partner; they cheat because they’ve given up hope that their partner will ever be able to fulfill all their needs.

Forgiveness

Right now there will be many many marriages in a lot of pain as people (often women) discover their partner sought to have an affair via AshleyMadison. Whether trust can be rebuilt will depend on how much trust there was to begin with and how committed they are to restoring it. But whether you’ve ever felt the sting of betrayal from infidelity or not, the truth is that to make any marriage work we have to be willing to forgive our partner when they fail to live up to the expectations we have of them (and often, the expectations they have of themselves).

I know myself that often I am not as patient or thoughtful or generous or organized as I want to be. Sometimes I frustrate my husband Andrew as I forget to do the things I promised or let my own priorities totally over-ride his. Fortunately, I married a forgiving man whose loyalty and commitment overrides the many things that may otherwise make him wonder whether he drew a short straw.

As wonderful a husband as he is though, I too have had to forgive him at times. Sometimes for nothing more than not being as playful or spontaneous as I want. Needless to say, forgiveness is not a one off activity but something we have to extend to others as well as to ourselves again and again and again.

Personal courage

Too often people get married for the wrong reasons and then, feeling like they can’t turn back, stay married for the wrong reasons.

Fear. Insecurity. Greed. Pressure. Pride.

The truth is that building a truly great marriage — one that stands the test of time complete with its ongoing pressures, problems and temptations — takes courage. Courage to say no to the temptation to commit our lives to someone we know in our hearts is not the person for us. Courage not to settle too soon or sell out on our hearts deepest longing. Courage to lay down our masks and reveal the full truth of who we are to another human being. Courage to ask for what we want and say what we feel. Courage to say sorry and to work on ourselves. Courage to forgive their failings and fallibility. Courage to forgive our own. And last but not least, courage to believe that our hard work, compromises and sacrifices will ultimately all be worth it.

Because while there are many decades ahead until Andrew and I find ourselves in the sunset of our lives, I truly believe it genuinely will be.

What’s Underneath Fall’s Lingerie Trend? Wouldn’t You Like to Know!

lingerie

Take it from the “Ultimate First Date Look”: Nothing is sexier than a hint of what’s underneath. No, we aren’t saying that you should employ those removable plastic straps or leave those thick Lycra bands out for the world to see. We’re talking lingerie—and lots of it.

So how to translate underthings into the everyday? To start, wash your mind of the thought that you’ll be heading to the cubicle in BDSM-latexwear. Instead, look to all of the examples of la nuit-chic from Fall 2015, from the décolletage-diving black-lace jumpsuits at Balmain to the lace-trimmed baby doll frocks at Chloé.

For a runway-to-real-life example, first consider the bodysuit: Pair a romantic tulle version with a high-waisted A-line skirt and a denim topper to keep it casual, or a black knit cashmere piece with high-waisted army shorts for more coverage. Charming bras add an intentional, come-hither component when you allow the straps to peek out from under thin slip dresses. Most importantly, opening up your boudoir for its daytime potential ensures you practically double your wardrobe.

What’s Trending With Tara: Culottes

2015-08-19-1440014811-4394917-Tara_Toggage_Resized.jpg

At this point, I am sure you received the memo — culottes are cool. Hip and chic, these trousers are a modern alternative to the midi-skirt. The hem hits mid-calf and the leg is cut wide, so even though they top the style charts, the silhouette can leave you looking squat if not styled correctly. Looking stumpy is not something I endorse; however, I cannot deny the freshness of these pants and feel very confident we will be seeing them grace the streets on the most fashionable come fall, as well. And since there are so many options out there that won’t break the bank, I felt there is no better time than now to master the culotte!

After scouting around, one version I found easy to execute is the culotte jumpsuit. Because of the nature of a jumpsuit, there is no break in material, pattern or color from head-to-hem so the result is lengthening to compensate for the choppiness of the culotte. I also found that when wearing this type of bottom, if you keep your top half fitted, it balances out the volume in the leg. And more over, if you are daring enough to bare a bit of skin on top, it will offset the awkwardness of the hem and alternatively highlight the exposed skin on the ankle instead.

Rocking culottes right now will instantly give you style game. The fact that they are not quite pants and not quite shorts makes them ideal for in-between weather, wearing on city streets and easy transitioning from work to play. I encourage you to hop on board with me and give these trousers a try while keeping these tips in mind:

  • Always seek to stretch out your frame and appear taller. One way to do so is by eliminating the breaks in the silhouette. Selecting a jumpsuit version is not the only way to do this. Wearing one color head-to-toe will also do the trick, check out What’s Trending With Tara Monochromatic for more on that.
  • Wear heals, the higher the better. Showing skin around the ankle and choosing one with a pointed toe will help create a longer silhouette.
  • Seek out culottes that have a high waist. This way, if you dare to ditch your heels and opt for pure comfort instead, the high waistline gives the illusion of a longer hip-to-toe ratio, i.e. longer legs!
  • Try coupling a high-waisted pair with a crop top or a form-fitting top tucked in to accentuate a small waist. This will bring sexy back to a somewhat androgynous look.
  • And lastly, try to avoid busy prints and stick to basic colors like navy, black, ivory, or tan. Let the pants’ shape speak for itself.

Here are some options to consider helping narrow your search:

Zara — cropped high waisted trousers

Shopbop — culotte jumpsuit

ASOS — wide leg pants

Mango — palazzo culottes

Topshop — culotte jumpsuit

Armani Exchange — chambray culottes

Loft — cropped linen sailor pants

Zara — cropped wide leg trousers

What’s Beef: Mike Epps Parodies Ghostface Killah’s Action Bronson Diss Video?

The married Mike Epps, was recently busted by his wife for his risque social media behavior. Perhaps in an attempt to deflect some of the spotlight’s glare, the veteran comedian has recently uploaded a YouTube video, where he the spoofs  Ghostface Killah’s message to Action Bronson.

Back in July, Ironman released a video where he candidly shared his thoughts. This response followed Action’s appearance on ESPN’s Sports Nation. Pretty Tony challenged the Queens MC and rhetorically asked things like, “Who gives you the right to even mention my name out your motherfucking mouth? Boy, you done made a mistake.”

Below, check out the video. Did Mike Epps rendition do the original video justice?

Drake/Meek Mill feud: What’s wrong with celeb beef culture

“Calling all Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift fans: Shots have been fired, this is not a drill.” That’s pretty much been the reaction of the Internet this week, after Cyrus gave an interview with Marie Claire, in which she called out Swift and the hypocrisy of the music industry’s sex/violence paradigm, as illustrated in her “Bad Blood” video. “I don't get the violence revenge thing,” declared Cyrus. “That's supposed to be a good example? And I'm a bad role model because I'm running around with my titties out? I'm not sure how titties are worse than guns.” YouTube: Taylor Swift – Bad Blood ft. Kendrick Lamar Cyrus has a point: The double-standard between sex and violence in American pop culture has been well-chronicled. But her invocation of Swift to make her point is still frustrating, because it feels like the beginning of just another celebrity feud. In music today, celebrity feud culture has somehow overtaken the industry, tearing down artists and distracting us from their work. This isn’t exactly a surprising turn of events. Best friend-collector that she is, Swift has been involved in a rather high amount of disagreements lately. Things bubbled over in last month’s Nicki Minajincident, wherein Minaj expressed her distaste with the lack of black women nominated at the MTVVMAs. Swift, apparently seeing this as a personal attack on her, responded indignantly. She eventually apologized, and it’s been radio silence between the two ever since. But not before Katy Perry, widely acknowledged as the target of “Bad Blood,” threw some not so subtle shade at Swift on Twitter. Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women argument about as one unmeasurably capitalizes on the take down of a woman…— KATY PERRY (@katyperry) July 22, 2015The feud didn’t stop there, amidst rumors that Rihanna was preparing a T-Swift diss track of her own. Even Canadian pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen was briefly thrown into the fray, when fans freaked out over the release of her single “Warm Blood,” and began contrasting it with Swift’s aforementioned anthem. As the Daily Dot’s own Alexandra Samuels notes, labeling the exchange as a “feud” isn’t necessarily fair, because it suggests that women like Minaj and Swift are not capable having a rational discussion about the state of entertainment. “The media's tendency to reduce serious arguments between women to petty quarrels is problematic, because it casts aside women like Minaj as ‘haters,’ rather than as creative minds who are also cultural influencers,” she writes. There is an intelligent debate to be had regarding representation in the music industry, and Minaj and Swift gave us a chance to have it. But in painting it as nothing but a “cat fight,” the message got lost on the Internet. @taylorswift13@NICKIMINAJ I was enjoying the cat fight! 🙀😿— Shanjid Alam Violet (@ShanjidAlam) July 24, 2015However, men aren’t any less susceptible to music’s celebrity feud machine, as evidenced by the recent back and forth between hip-hop artists Drake and Meek Mill. After Meek Mill took to Twitter to call out the Canadian rapper for using a ghostwriter on his contribution to Meek’s recent album, fireworks went off. What commenced was an exchange of diss tracks and tweets. This led to Drake’s seemingly triumphant performance at OVO fest in Toronto, where the crowd reveled as he took to the stage and projected a series of memes making fun of his aggressor. In painting it as nothing but a “cat fight,” the message got lost on the Internet. Feuds, or “beefs,” as the genre would oft describe them, are a tricky subject in hip-hop, because they are a major part of its history. In the past, feuds have elevated all parties involved to reach new creative heights. Look at the feud between Big Daddy Kane and Rakim, two hip-hop pioneers who exchanged subtle disses for years, determined to prove not just to each other that they were the best—but to themselves. But hip-hop’s most famous feud, the east coast/west coast dispute between Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G., ended up with blood being spilled on both sides: Shakur was shot dead in 1996, and Biggie was gunned down less than a year later. So without a doubt, competition in hip-hop is a mixed bag. In between his dual masterpieces Good Kid, M.A.A.D City and To Pimp A Butterfly, there was hardly a more exciting moment for hip-hop in 2013 than when Kendrick Lamar famously called out all his major rap peers on Big Sean’s “Control,”—including Big Sean himself. And when beef began to brew between Lamar and Drake that same year, it appeared as if everyone was going to emerge a winner. Here were two artists at the peak of their powers, each striving to be at the top of their game.YouTube: Big Sean – Control f. Kendrick Lamar & Jay ElectronicaThe Meek Mill/Drake feud, on the other hand, turned into something completely different. Regardless of whether Meek’s allegations against Drake were true, they were complicated by the fact that he was dating Drake’s labelmate, Nicki Minaj. And given that Drake was the more famous rapper, Mill received much harsher treatment from the media—and from the Internet, in particular. While the memes making fun of him started out as lighthearted and kind of funny, they quickly turned ugly on multiple levels. Pitchfork’s Meaghan Garvey asserts, “There was a distinct moment during the OVO Fest set where things immediately flipped from corny but ultimately harmless to legitimately toxic: an unfunny, badly-edited image of a bride and groom, with Nicki’s head edited onto the man and Meek’s onto the woman.” YouTube: Drake Performs "Back To Back" At OVO Fest 2015 (Meek Mill Diss)The feud was no longer about a competition to determine who was the better rapper—it was about sexism, masculinity, and the media’s unquenchable thirst for blood, the desire to see one person crowned a victor, standing over the carcass of the other’s career. Neither party came off looking great, and Drake especially did damage to his reputation as a sensitive and thoughtful rapper, all in some arbitrary struggle to win the Internet. While the memes making fun of him started out as lighthearted and kind of funny, they quickly turned ugly on multiple levels. The most fundamentally frustrating thing about celebrity feuds between musicians is that they distract us from the actual music. It has become impossible to talk about about popular artists without also discussing their personal lives. While an artist’s personal life can occasionally inform how we think about their music, it shouldn’t define it. Take Kanye West, for example. No matter how many awards and prizes he receive and how matter how much acclaim he accrues, there are some who will always see him as Kim Kardashian’s asshole husband. That’s what the resistance to having him play at the Glastonbury Festival and Toronto's Pan American Games was really about—not being able to see past the celebrity to the talent. The worst of all possible outcomes manifests in the trend of music journalism being covered like “lifestyle reporting,” as was first highlighted in Ted Gioia’s now infamous op-ed piece for the Daily Beast. I’ve just spent a very depressing afternoon looking through the leading music periodicals. And what did I learn? Pretty much what I expected. I found out what the chart-topping musicians are wearing (or, in many instances, not wearing). I got updates on their love life and learned whose marriages are on the rocks. I read updates on the legal proceedings of the rich and famous. I got insights into the food preferences and travel routines of megastars. Gioia can’t help but come off as a kind of cranky old man here. But while he’d be wrong to buy into the idea that pop music is worse today than ever before (a frequent trope in cranky, old man thinking), he’s correct in his observation that now more than ever before, we’re more focused on the artists than we are on their art. The trade-off is that on the Internet, we have more ways to feel connected to our favorite musicians, but we’re also inundated with invitations to stare one-sidedly into their personal lives, criticizing their every move from afar. When we follow artists on Instagram and Twitter, we think we get a sense of who they really are. But we forget that the best way to get a sense of who an artist is comes from listening to their music. Music has not gotten substantially worse in recent years, but music feuds have. And this is not good. It’s not good for women, it’s not good for men, and it’s not good for music in general. But most of all, it’s not good for us, the listeners.Chris Osterndorf is a freelance journalist whose work has appeared on websites such as Mic, Salon, xoJane, the Week, and more. When he’s not writing, Chris enjoys making movies with friends. He lives in Los Angeles.Screengrab via DrakeOfficial/YouTube

What’s so Funny About Political Correctness?

2015-08-08-1439052066-8726377-SteelyDan.jpg
It was just last weekend that I spent a wonderful evening under a beautiful night sky enjoying listening to Elvis Costello. I was so excited to see him live in concert at one of my favorite outdoor venues in New Jersey. Since the concert, his 1974 hit song, “What’s so funny about peace, love, and understanding” has been playing repeatedly in my head. Ironically, rocker Nick Lowe wrote the proficient songwriter’s most popular song and biggest crowd-pleaser. This idealistic tune laments of a wicked world of darkness and insanity. Elvis, in his distinctive voice sang this song with an upbeat tempo reminiscent of the late 70s new wave genre. With angst and attitude in his voice, he sang out loudly, “(What’s so funny ’bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding?” After watching the recent Republican Presidential debates, I can’t help but ask the same question in reference to political correctness.

Yes, I know there is a good chance I will be chided for my defense of political correctness. Many feel that their well-intended comments are often manipulated such that the hypersensitive vilify them as xenophobes or bigots. People say that our society has become too sensitive. Donald Trump’s comments at the debate seemed to rile even further the “political correctness cynics” when he proclaimed, “I don’t have time for political correctness.” And while I don’t doubt that there are some who use political correctness to deflect criticism, do we really want to go back to the 1970s when Archie Bunker’s racist-like rants and pejoratives were as commonplace as today’s texting of OMG and LOL? I believe political correctness get’s a bad rap. Just because some may hide irresponsibly behind political correctness doesn’t mean we should eliminate the practice all together.

As someone born Jewish and one who doesn’t celebrate Christmas, I have never been offended when greeted with a friendly, “Merry Christmas.” I’ve always taken the wish as I presume it is intended, as a pleasant and well-meaning gesture. I know some who share my faith feel differently. Personally, I look at one’s intention rather than the specific words they use. However, it can be challenging to derive one’s intentions. Therefore, how do we know if someone’s words are meant to be hurtful or exclusionary or are simply a poor choice of words or simple ignorance with no ill intent? Well, I guess we can never know for sure but if we listen carefully, and if we are honest with ourselves, I think we can tell if someone is deliberately being mean-spirited or if what they are saying is tapping into our own feelings of insecurity and feeling different.

A few years ago, I had to get my car fixed at a body shop. A neighbor, a native of Africa, and whose son accidentally bumped my car, paid for the repairs. I remember the owner of the body shop handed me my keys, and told me that the “colored fella” had dropped off the check. I was taken aback by the man’s use of the antiquated term. However, it did seem to me that the man was not using the expression in a derogatory fashion. The sounds of the words coming out of his mouth sounded dissonant to me. Now I have no way of knowing if the man is racist or if he had simply grown up at a time and in a place, where the term was commonplace and acceptable. I also don’t know if my neighbor would have been insulted by the term. I would imagine that reactions to the term might vary from one person to the next based on their experiences and perspective. Regardless, I think there is always room on both sides of the argument for sensitivity to each other’s viewpoint. My fear is that individuals will use the argument of a society where political correctness has gone awry as an excuse for insensitive and derogatory remarks. Many times those who are the most critical of political correctness are the ones who are rarely a target. Regardless, what’s wrong if we err on the side of trying not to offend or upset others? There are certainly worse aspirations we could have.

Maybe though, the words ‘political’ and ‘correctness’ are poor word choices for the term. In our current politically divisive environment, anything with the word ‘political’ in it already has a bad connotation; and it really isn’t about what is the correct or incorrect thing to say. It’s more about consideration and understanding for others. Perhaps the so-called progressives and idealists aren’t really seeking political correctness. So how about we forget about being politically correct and we focus instead on other more agreeable goals such as peace, love, and understanding. After all, as Elvis puts it, “What’s so funny ’bout peace, love, and understanding?”

We’ve Laid the Foundation for Equality: Here’s What’s Next

The Supreme Court’s decision granting all Americans the freedom to marry instantly made me think fondly back to the day I wed, which was one of the happiest days of my life and incredibly meaningful to my daughter and our family. Now, young people like her — especially lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth — will grow up in a country where they can marry the person they love and where they are equal under the law — something so many of us never dreamed possible in our lifetimes.

As the Executive Director of Equality Federation, the strategic partner to the state-based equality movement, I am humbled by my role in the decades long struggle to push love to the forefront and win equality, one step at a time. But, we are not done.

The ruling solidified the foundation: now we have to build the house.

More heavy lifting is needed to achieve our vision of a world free of all forms of discrimination: a world without racism; a world without violence against transgender and gender nonconforming people; a world where everyone has the health care they need; and a world where all of us are able to live without the fear of being fired from our jobs or kicked out of our homes simply for being who we are.

As the LGBT movement charts its path forward, we should reflect on how we got here. The pathway to this historic victory felt long and arduous, but in the arc of history was quite short. We learned and adapted quickly as the public began to support our families.

Equality Federation was formed to partner with the state-based equality organizations. So much of the national progress we see today began with efforts at the local and state level. Examples abound. MassEquality became the first organization to lead an effort that resulted in a super-majority of state legislators supporting the freedom to marry. Equality Maryland made history when they led a successful campaign to win marriage equality at the ballot box. Equality California showed great courage in the Proposition 8 battle, and the many lessons learned from that valiant effort continue to inform our work.

State-based equality groups throughout the country worked tirelessly — amplifying the heartwarming stories of couples, lobbying legislatures and so much more — alongside the legal teams who fought marriage bans in the courts and brought down the Defense of Marriage Act. Our community owes enormous gratitude to all these organizations and, of course, the thousands of people who participated in the lawsuits, campaigns, lobbying, canvassing and storytelling.

We also honor all of the couples and families who simply lived their lives openly and authentically day in and day out, even when it was uncomfortable or dangerous. There are insights to be gleaned from the aunt who held signs at her local farmer’s market or the college student who collected signatures on campus.

In order to harness the momentum of this great win, it will be important to remember that equality is not achieved by relying solely on one person, organization or strategy. We found success by collaborating and sharing lessons learned in unprecedented ways, and that is what we must continue to do in order to ensure all Americans are protected from discrimination.

In the coming months, Equality Federation will continue working with our partners in the state-based equality movement — with even more vigor — to pass over 30 statewide nondiscrimination laws to include protections for LGBT people, and to struggle against racism, violence and injustice.

As during the early days of the marriage movement, many people are already doing their part. People have been sharing their stories of being fired from their jobs and kicked out of their homes simply for being who they are. Leaders in towns big and small are passing nondiscrimination ordinances. Now is not the time to rest — coming off of the marriage victory — we need to push forward so that no one is left behind.

Do You Know What’s In Your Nail Polish? 7 Manicure Shades You Can Feel Good About Wearing This Summer

Raymond Meier Nail Polish

In the wake of the New York Times report on the nail salon industry last week and its revelations on the negative health implications of long-term exposure to the chemicals found in many polishes and solvents, we began to think about the little ways that we, as consumers, can be part of a solution. And while there’s no clear medical consensus on the risks posed by some of the more controversial ingredients in nail lacquers, perhaps cultivating a new awareness of what we might be unwittingly painting on our fingertips—even in the smallest trace amounts—is a good first step.

Enter seven beauty companies who, ahead of any FDA mandate, have voluntarily chosen to develop beautiful, high-impact nail lacquers without the harsh chemicals that have been potentially linked to conditions as far-ranging as cancer and infertility. You may already know these brands, but did you know that their brightly colored varnishes (known officially as 5-Free polishes) are safer alternatives for both you and your manicurist? By eliminating the five most potentially harmful ingredients (toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, camphor, or DBP), these companies have made a commitment to providing nontoxic nail lacquers. Here are the seven standout nail colors we’re looking forward to wearing this summer.

What’s It Like to Be Deaf and Gay? (VIDEO)

2015-03-26-1427407287-9347296-RichardMesich.jpg

I’m From Driftwood is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit archive for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer stories. New stories are posted on the site every Wednesday.

What’s it like to navigate the gay world when you’re deaf? Richard Mesich shares his story, beginning with his coming-out experience. Richard recalls talking to his mom on AOL Instant Messenger:

We were talking, and my mom asked me, “Are you gay? Are you interested in boys?” I was thinking and realized it is time for me to open up, so I told my mom, “Yes, I am gay.” She said, “OK, that’s good. I am happy to hear that from you. I knew you were gay since you were a little kid.”

When Richard turned 21, his gay uncles took him to his first gay club in West Hollywood. While the experience was a little uncomfortable, it introduced him to the dating world:

I dated a few guys on and off. It was good and enjoyable. But I was very nervous dating a guy for the first time. I met this one person, and he was hearing. We went out for dinner, and we could communicate a little, but sometimes it’s hard with a hearing person. Mostly I would text on my phone to communicate.

Now, years later, Richard is able to reflect on how comfortable he’s become as an out gay, deaf man:

Comparing high school to where I am now, I used to feel lost and isolated. I didn’t know who I was. Now I feel confident, happy and know who I am. I’m comfortable with hearing and deaf people; it doesn’t matter to me. Now I know who I am, but I am not in a rush to look for love.

Their first two online auctions will stream live on April 1. “The New York Sale” will feature Big Apple–themed memorabilia including thirteen letters from the New York Yankees 1976 sign and the original lease for Andy Warhol’s first studio on the Upper East Side; while “Photographs” will include prints from seminal artists including Richard Avedon, Man Ray, and Nicholas Nixon. Books: “How’m I Doin’?” Two Years In, Vatican Expert Talks Pope Francis, Women In The Church & What’s Next

2015-03-06-1425623246-5391436-timthumb.jpg

THE FRANCIS MIRACLE
By John L. Allen Jr.
($ 27; Time)

If you’ve paid any attention to news coverage of the Catholic Church at any point in the last 15 to 20 years, chances are you’ve seen or heard from John L. Allen Jr. Now on staff at The Boston Globe and a key contributor to their Catholic news website Crux, Allen has been covering the Vatican since he first headed to Rome in 1998. At the time, it was a backwater to most news outlets and almost no American media had a presence on the ground. So Allen had this beat almost to himself as far as US audiences were concerned.

After learning Italian and building up contacts, Allen found himself with an increasing worldwide audience thanks to the growth of the internet. In 2001, of course 9-11 made the “clash of civilizations” and Christianity and Islam central issues. Plus there were hot topics like the never-ending child molestation and cover-up scandals roiling country after country and finally the death of Pope John Paul II. The Vatican was hot again and Allen was here, there and everywhere, delivering solid journalism and working as a key analyst for outlets like CNN. Any other journalist helicoptering into the Vatican for a big event knew they could get a succinct quote and solid insight from Allen. (So, at times, could bishops and cardinals who wanted a little background on the latest news when they’d been out of the country. It never hurts to be a trusted source for your sources)

Allen has also written a string of increasingly confident books, including not one but two biographies of the man who would become Pope Benedict as well as a demystifying look at Opus Dei. Now with his latest work The Francis Miracle, Allen turns his eye on the pope with popularity ratings a movie star would envy as well as a Reagan-like ability to overcome any momentary stumbles in his off-the-cuff remarks simply because people like him. As Allen has put it, with Pope Benedict everyone felt the things they disliked about the Catholic Church were because of him. With Pope Francis, they feel the things they dislike about the Catholic Church are despite him.

Allen’s new book contains a biographical sketch of Francis and his life, mostly with an eye towards how those experiences might color the Pope’s worldview and the priorities he has for the Church. Then Allen looks at key issues facing the Church such as much-needed financial reform, the role of women, the child molestation scandals and the lack of accountability for those who covered it up for decades. It’s a snapshot of the Francis papacy, where it’s at today, how he is doing and what to look for in the future.

I talked with Allen in-depth, discussing his unlikely career path, the many controversial issues facing the Catholic Church, the personality of Francis versus Benedict and why non-Catholics need to be aware of the Pope and his priorities just as they would with any other major world leader. You can see the entire interview at BookFilter.com. Following are some key excerpts.

ALLEN ON FIRST MEETING THE POPE

Allen talks about the first time he met the man who would become Pope Francis back in 2001 just days after 9-11. It was an almost accidental meeting because the late Cardinal Edward Egan had to back out of a previously arranged interview. (Egan died one day after our discussion took place.)

ALLEN ON WHY FRANCIS IS UNIQUE AMONG POPES WHEN IT COMES TO WOMEN

Allen talks about Pope Francis, how he broke new ground by working with and for women as a young man and why women are so far disappointed with his track record.

HOW ALLEN JUMPED FROM HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM TEACHER TO COVERING THE VATICAN

Allen talks about his unlikely career path that veered from religious studies to being the faculty adviser for a high school newspaper to hot rods and then — suddenly — the Vatican.

You can follow John L. Allen Jr. on Facebook and Twitter or at Crux and the Boston Globe. To see the full interview, head to BookFilter.com and watch the video embedded on the front page.

Plastic Surgery and Selfies: What’s the Connection?

Selfies. Who hasn’t taken one? What may have started as a popular social media trend among teens has now become socially acceptable for people of all ages and from all walks of life. Even President Obama himself has taken a few selfies! The Oxford Dictionary now includes the word selfie, which is defined as “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and shared via social media.”

Closeups of our faces, cocked just at the right angle with our lips pursed and our sultry gazes directed at the camera, are our prized social media possessions. Why? What is it about the selfie that makes it such a popular everyday habit among social media users?

Though self-portraits have existed for centuries, the selfie is unique. Some might even say it’s revolutionary. Perhaps the popularity of the selfie can be traced to Facebook’s like button, which allows for quick reassurance and an ego boost. However, what happens when we don’t receive enough likes, or we’re simply just not satisfied with the multitude of photos we’ve taken?

According to a poll conducted by The American Academy of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, there’s a rise in plastic surgery patients who are undergoing procedures due to social media’s fixation on physical appearance. This is illustrated by the infographic cretated by the Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery Center below.

While some people go as far as Photoshopping their selfies, others take it to the next level with nose jobs, eyelid surgery and hair transplants. Some women are even opting for reconstructive surgery on their hands.

Think that’s a bit excessive? It’s nothing compared to the $ 15,000 that LA talent agent Triana Lavey spent when she underwent multiple procedures in order to look more attractive in her selfies. Lavey’s been quoted as saying that her virtual self is just as important as her real-life self. According to Lavey, her chin was ruining her selfies and therefore, it had to go.

In light of this dramatic rise of all of these selfie-motivated plastic surgeries, we should probably ask ourselves a simple photography question.

Is a photograph that was taken at arm’s length with poor lighting and a smartphone camera lens really the best means of judging whether or not we’re happy with our appearances?

Probably not.

In fact, using selfies as a form of self-love is a great way to learn to appreciate your body! Start using them as tools for learning and self-exploration. You might be shocked as to what kind of beauty you find.
