Who’s Your Daddy? Reflections of a Humbled Son on Thelonious Monk’s 98th Birthday

My life began with one perplexing question: Who is daddy?

Let me explain. From my earliest recollections, adults, when first meeting me, would invariably ask the question, “Do you know who your father is?” The query came from musicians and fans alike. I didn’t really understand the question at first, because the answer seemed so obvious. My father was my daddy. Of course, they would follow up with statements like, “You know he’s a genius,” which really meant nothing to a five- or ten-year-old. They would add proclamations like, “He changed the music,” and/or “His music will be here for the next 300 years.” That also meant absolutely nothing to me. However, though I couldn’t imagine 300 years, I could imagine one. So when told he would be a bigger name in 50 years, that did seem like a long, long time from then, so I chalked it up to nonsense, in my own toddling way. It seemed to me that in fifty years, I would be an old man — and surely dad would’ve been forgotten by then.

In my early teen years, having by then seen a lot of major artists come and disappear into obscurity, I was convinced these proclamations from ardent fans were pure hyperbole. But at fifteen, I began my love affair with drums. My understanding and views of music changed, and I clearly realized dad was a true badass. But so were his buddies Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Art Blakey, and, of course, Max Roach (my teacher), and many others. I was clear on the huge influence of artists like Duke Ellington and Charlie Parker, and the impact they made on western music. I figured dad was definitely in the crowd, but I also noticed that even those greatest of artisans pretty much said the same things about my dad.

Now you must understand that to me, Thelonious Sphere Monk was just daddy. He took me and my sister, Boo Boo [nickname], everywhere, and taught me how to treat girls, spin tops and change my sister’s diapers, among many other things — he did all of that Mr. Mom stuff. I can’t recall even one time in my life when I ever called him Thelonious, or Monk, or pop, or anything other than daddy. I was far more focused on getting a chance to play with him, than who he was to the world.

My first real clue about how admired my father was as a musical innovator came on the occasion of my mother’s birthday. My dad decided the family should go see Duke Ellington and his orchestra at the Rainbow Grill in the Waldorf Astoria. When we entered the packed supper club, the band was wailing. With the colorful lighting, it all looked magical. And a magical moment it was. Without hesitation, Duke Ellington stopped his orchestra abruptly, went to the microphone and said “Ladies and gentlemen, the baddest left-hand in the history of our music (obviously alluding to Thelonious’ harmonic innovations) just came in — Thelonious Monk.” There was a huge roar, and I knew this was special stuff. This was Duke Ellington talking, the Duke — the greatest jazzman I knew.

Soon after that, in the summer of my nineteenth year on earth, it happened. It was 1969, the year of my enlightenment. I was still living with my parents, and practicing my drums seven or eight hours a day. I was dedicated, focused and broke.

When my dad was home from touring, he would lay his head on his headboard resting against a wall that was, maybe, eight inches thick, with me practicing right on the other side. From the day I started practicing, until I was twenty years old, he never said a word about my playing, but that’s another whole story.

I was in my own world. There were no listening restrictions in the Monk household, so I was listening to dad, Duke, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, the Supremes, and Frank Sinatra — everything, no limits. Then along came the music industry’s move from Hi-Fi to stereo. I wanted a stereo, and decided to build one myself. I went to Lafayette Electronics in downtown Manhattan and purchased parts to build a speaker, though I was not fully familiar with the needs of a stereo system, I purchased parts for only one speaker — a profoundly knuckle-headed move. However, on that hot summer day, I chose to build that one speaker, despite my technical mistake. Once it was completed, I needed to test it, but had a dilemma. It was big, 15 inches, plus a huge wooden cabinet. I wanted to go big. I was afraid to play a loud pop record, like my new Sly and the Family Stone album or something from a Motown group, but I wanted something I could turn up so I could hear this new speaker but not blow it up. So I decided on a quiet, smaller sounding group — a trio record by my father. I can clearly remember lying down with my ear to the speaker and pressing the button for the automatic changer to drop the record. It was a recording that featured Art Blakey on drums and the great bassist, Oscar Pettiford, filling out the trio. They were playing my father’s composition, “Work.” I had never heard it before. It is one of his most difficult improvisational vehicles. I could easily hear it, but it was so difficult and different that I was amazed. I was savvy enough to tell it was special, extremely special.

It was so special, I couldn’t stop playing the melody over and over for the next hour, and the melody was only about a minute long. I was stunned at the genius of his rhythm, his harmonics and his precision. It all came together for me that hot summer afternoon. Right then, I realized that the guy resting in the room next to me, and listening to my practicing, was, in fact, a timeless genius named Thelonious Monk, the man that changed the music — the man everyone had been talking about all my life. My dad was Thelonious Monk. And that was my name too. And it was humbling.

thelonious monk

My life changed just like the music. He’d done it to me too. That fifty-year thing was clearly conservative, since I’m now 65, and I see the 300-year thing is truly possible, if Beethoven and Mozart are any indicators. I got scared, but I got proud, and have been so ever since.

I could have been born on a hilltop in another country with nothing, but instead, I was born to Thelonious and Nellie, and given a wonderful heritage. How lucky was I. God bless you daddy. I know exactly who you are, and I will always love you! Happy Birthday!

Thelonious Sphere Monk, III (T.S. Monk) is an internationally acclaimed jazz drummer, bandleader, vocalist and arts educator. The son and musical heir to his father, the legendary jazz composer and pianist Thelonious Monk. Twins Are Taking Over the Fashion World: Here’s How to Tell Who’s Who

Odette & Liya Pavlova

With multiple sets of sisters appearing in campaigns or on the catwalk either solo or side by side, model twins are experiencing a major fashion moment. And it’s hard enough to keep track of new faces without those new faces having, well, identical new faces elsewhere. With the Pavlova, Bell, Moosgaard, and Soles girls all making an impact this season, we decided it was high time for an official Vogue.com explainer. Here, your handy guide to modeling’s current crop of doppelgängers.

Amelie & Cecile Moosgaard

The Moosgaard Twins
Danish newcomers Cecilie and Amalie Moosgaard have been unstoppable since their runway debut at Prada, turning up on the catwalk for Sacai, Sonia Rykiel, and Valentino. While their show list may be comparatively short, the duo have managed to accumulate work with several of the world’s top stylists, including Karl Templer (Sacai and Valentino) and Olivier Rizzo (Prada). Those are the kinds of connections that invariably lead to editorial and campaign work, but for the moment the twins are busy taking plenty of pictures of their own.

Amalie
Instagram: @amaliemoosgaard
Born a few moments earlier, Amalie is the older twin. A lover of interior design, she works part time for Danish home-goods brand House Doctor when she isn’t modeling. In between shows, Amalie has used her time in Paris to shop for books on Saint-Germain-des-Prés and take in local must-sees like Place Vendôme’s luxurious boutiques.

Cecilie
Instagram: @ceciliemoosgaard
After being discovered with her sister on the way back from a family shopping trip in Aarhus, Denmark, Cecilie has come into her own. Whether she’s snapping candid pictures backstage at Prada or zooming in on Paris’s impressive architectural details, Cecilie’s soft-focus images are eclectic and dreamy.

The Pavlova Twins
The Pavlovas experienced their breakthrough moments separately last fall, with each snagging a spot in a high-profile show. Lia opened Gucci as an exclusive (becoming an instant favorite of designer Alessandro Michele), while Odette racked up a series of appearances at spring couture, working with Viktor & Rolf and Schiaparelli, before becoming an exclusive for Saint Laurent for Fall 2015. On social media, the twins share a knack for keeping their fans abreast of their latest accomplishments, updating followers with images from each and every show they do, interspersed with behind-the-scenes candids with fellow Russian models like Anabel Krasnotsvetova and Liza Ostanina.

Lia
Instagram: @pavlovalia
A movie buff with a love of independent film, Lia is well versed in the oeuvre of her favorite actor, Jared Leto, citing Requiem for a Dream and Mr. Nobody as her top two movies. Lia even loves the superstar’s band, Thirty Seconds to Mars—and snapped a selfie of herself with Leto and co. backstage at their concert last spring.

Odette
Instagram: @odette.pavlova
Though she’s spent the past few weeks making waves as one of fashion month’s top walkers, Odette always makes time for music, especially for rock bands like Casa Murilo. She also has an appreciation for pop culture classics, as evidenced by her love of David Bowie, Andy Warhol, and the work of starchitect Zaha Hadid.

Kelsey & Baylee Soles

Expand

Kelsey & Baylee Soles, Vogue Model Casting

The Soles Twins
With their edgy good looks and rock ’n’ roll vibe, the Soles twins have been embraced by designers like Hedi Slimane, who tapped both for an exclusive for Spring 2015. Given their different hair colors—Baylee is dark brown while Kelsey is a dirty blonde—it’s a little easier to tell these two apart, but cut and color aren’t their sole differences. Enrolled in beauty class by their dad after a few too many preteen makeup experiments gone wrong, the Soles were scouted by their instructor, who soon became their mother agent.

Baylee
Instagram: @bayleesoles
A vintage collector with an eye for finding all the right pieces, Baylee shares her favorite items on Instagram but generally keeps mum about where she procures them—lest others tap into her secret wardrobe sources. Where most models keep their social updates image-focused, Baylee’s sense of humor makes her GIF-filled Twitter feed a must-read.

Kelsey
Instagram: @kelseysoles
Thirty seconds older, Kelsey went platinum to differentiate herself from her sister after they were continually mistaken for each other during castings. A fellow vintage fan, she’s amassed an enviable collection of denim bought during her international travels.

The Bell Twins

The Bell sisters have used this season to distinguish themselves from each other: Emerging on the scene after entering the Elite Model Look U.K. contest back in 2013, which May won. With matching freckled faces and strawberry blonde hair, the Bells were a pair of English roses until Paul Hanlon gave Ruth her signature bleached buzz cut, setting off a chain of events that would lead her to fashion month’s top runways, including Versace, Kenzo, Isabel Marant, and Gucci. May has yet to make her fashion month debut, but given the buzz surrounding Ruth, she’s certain to show up any minute now . . .

Ruth
Instagram: @ruthnotmay
When she isn’t modeling, Ruth is immersing herself in history—particularly where it pertains to geography and African studies. A fan of folksy rock, Ruth listens to bands like Haim while back in her hometown of Deal, but with her love of hiking, rock climbing, and exploration, she is ready for wherever the job will take her.

May
Instagram: @maynotruth
Serious about her studies, May plans on pursuing a career in paramedic science if ever she leaves fashion behind. An avid baker with a skill for crafting healthy sweet treats, May describes herself as the girly girl of the two. While she has yet to hit the Milan and Paris runways, she has kept herself busy, traveling to Iceland and the Seychelles in recent months.

Meet the Model Turned Accessories Designer, Who’s Dries Van Noten’s Secret Weapon

sylvia van der klooster

With soulful eyes and dramatic cheekbones that recall a latter-day Vermeer painting, it’s easy to see why model Slyvia van der Klooster was plucked from a small farming town in Holland and thrust into the fashion spotlight back in the late ’90s. In a recent email interview, the Dutch beauty said that the best birthday present she ever got was making her runway debut for Prada when she was just 20 years old.

She soon became part of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s famiglia, too; for years both she and Giovanna Battaglia, now a much-photographed stylist, were the fit models for the house. Dolce & Gabbana weren’t the only ones to fall under Van der Klooster’s spell, she was a face of Versace beauty and walked for British showmen John Galliano and Alexander McQueen. Eighteen years later, and she’s still walking the runway.

These days, Van der Klooster does fittings and walks for Dries Van Noten, the romantic Antwerp-based designer, whose studio is a quick train ride from Amsterdam, Van der Klooster’s hometown, and just as bicycle friendly. She is a woman on the go, and on the rise: The demand for the handmade organic leather handbag often outstrips supply (though fellow Dutch model Saskia de Brauw scored one); her first movie, Debiel, is released this month; and then there are those street style photographers to pose for . . . .

Here, Van der Klooster talks about her inimitable style—a mash-up of vintage, prints, and flannel—working with Dries, and the Céline skirt that got away.

How would you describe your style?
My style is a mix of prints and colors. I don’t even own anything black. I have always had a crush on the ’70s and the grunge era, so I dress with a lot of layers and mix all kinds of prints and proportions. My closet is full of Dries Van Noten, which is fantastic to mix. His clothes are seasonless, so they suit me very well.

What are your favorite pieces in your closet right now?
The purple velvet boots from Dries Fall 2015—they are heavenly—and my flower-printed coat from Dries as well.

When did you start working with Dries?
I walked for Dries in the late ’90s, three times I think. He was always my absolute personal favorite. Three years ago I started doing the fittings with him in Antwerp. I live in Amsterdam and it’s only an hour and half away from his office.

What’s it like?
We start three or four months before the show with fittings. It is so very inspiring to see a Dries collection come together, as I said, I have been a fan for as long as I can remember and love the humble mentality of the Belgian people in general. Dries and his team are the nicest, down-to-earth people who work super hard. It doesn’t even feel like work sometimes because I am very interested in his way of thinking when it comes to making a collection.

How did you get into bag design?
I started making bags four years ago; I went to a bag-making school in the south of Holland where you learn everything from scratch: patterns, cutting, stitching. I make all my bags myself with organic vegetable-tanned leather. It takes me about a week to make one. Right now I have a long waiting list of people who want to order one, so I try to make them in between my work as a model.

Do you have any tips for dressing for bike riding?
Anything goes on a bike! I have [worn] a long evening gown on my bike to go to a Dutch Vogue party. [When I do that] I try to either tuck it under my bottom on the saddle or put a knot in it—you become creative. I lost a Céline skirt once because it got stuck in the wheel. I hope that never happens again.

Do you dress differently in Paris than at home?
Yes, in Holland I am more practical, especially when I work on my bags. In Paris I dress up more, [in] heels, dresses. I love how people dress in Paris as well, [and] that gives me more inspiration to dress up.

Do you have a favorite shopping spot in Paris?
I always love to go to Kiliwatch, the vintage store close to Rue Étienne Marcel. I always find something there.

‘Who’s The Boss?’ Star Danny Pintauro Reveals He Is HIV-Positive

On Saturday night’s episode of “Oprah: Where Are They Now?“, former child star Danny Pintauro revealed that he has been living with a big secret for more than a decade: He is HIV-positive.

Everyone remembers the young, blond-haired Pintauro as Jonathan on the family sitcom “Who’s the Boss?” For eight years, Pintauro played the son of a driven single mother, winning over audiences with his nerdy charm. But, in the years after “Who’s the Boss?” ended, the once-lighthearted little boy grew into a complicated young man trying to live a private life in the public eye.

In his sit-down with Oprah, Pintauro — who goes by “Daniel” now — begins the interview by sharing his long-held secret.

“I wanted to tell you this a long time ago, but I wasn’t ready. I’m ready now,” Pintauro says. “I’m HIV-positive, and I have been for 12 years.”

Part of why Pintauro hadn’t spoken publicly about his health before, he says, is because he wasn’t sure if people were ready for a conversation of this magnitude. “It’s just a big deal, you know? It’s not something that people are really talking about right now,” Pintauro says.

This isn’t the first time Pintauro has revealed a private detail about his personal life. In 1997, when he was a college student, Pintauro came out as gay — but he hadn’t exactly planned to. “I was outed,” Pintauro says. “It wasn’t by choice.”

The actor says that a tabloid reporter called him back then saying the paper was going to out him whether he cooperated or not. His former “Who’s the Boss?” co-star, Judith Light, encouraged Pintauro to participate as a way of controlling the conversation. “It was the best thing,” Pintauro says now. “‘They can’t misquote you,’ she said. ‘And as long as you give really responsible and mature answers, it can’t be a bad article.'”

And, as Pintauro realized, it wasn’t. “Believe it or not, the ‘National Enquirer’ actually did a really fantastic, heartwarming article about it,” he says. “I was shocked.”

Pintauro says he regularly underwent routine HIV testing every six months. Then, in March of 2003, his whole world changed.

“I was living in New York at the time and completely clueless to the idea that I was positive. I went in for a regular checkup,” Pintauro says. “It was just regular blood work. You go in, and you sort of waited two weeks on pins and needles — or at least I did, because I was just terrified of the idea of getting HIV.”

Having come out of a two-year relationship, Pintauro admits later in the interview that he had been looking to explore more sexually and began using crystal meth as a means to that end. “I was doing crystal meth, which completely ruins your immune system. I’d been doing it at that point very briefly, but it was three weeks or so, off and on,” he explains. “I had just come out of a two-year relationship, and I discovered in that relationship that there was more I wanted to explore sexually. Crystal meth takes away your inhibitions… And if you want to explore that adventurous side, taking the drug is going to put you there.

”I was experimenting,” he continues. “And believe it or not, I thought that I was being safe in that encounter. I know exactly when it happened.”

Though Pintauro doesn’t go into those details, he does say that he doesn’t remember the man’s name. “I regret not knowing that, because that person has completely changed my life,” he says.

Even though antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) had been introduced by the time Pintatuo was diagnosed, dramatically increasing the lifespan of those with HIV and reducing their risk of transmitting the infection to others, Pintauro was still devastated by his diagnosis. He struggled to make sense of his feelings.

“It was terrifying, and there was a sense of relief,” he says. “It’s backwards. You’ve spent so much time terrified that you’re going to get it, and then you have it. You don’t have to be terrified anymore.”

Today, Pintauro lives with his husband, Wil Tabares, in Las Vegas, and works as a restaurant manager. He told Oprah that his dreams in life are to open a bed and breakfast with Tabares, live a long life and be a beacon of light that can help make a difference to others along the journey. Pintauro also shared an important message for other men in the gay community.

”What I want my community to realize is we need to take better care of ourselves,” he says.

“Oprah: Where Are They Now?” airs on Saturdays at 10 p.m. ET on OWN.

How To Love Someone Who’s Flawed

The bad blood runs deep between Diane and Carie, a mother and daughter who haven’t seen each other in over a year. Carie says her mom was once a successful business owner, but she gambled away millions and now lives in an RV. Carie says she tried to help her mother get back on her feet but claims nothing is ever good enough for her. Diane says her daughter left her stranded when she needed her most. Watch their story here.

In the video above, Dr. Phil offers them this advice: “You two may not be fast friends and spending every minute of every day together, but you know what? You can hit the reset button. And you can begin with boundaries to start again. I’ve often said that every situation needs a hero.”

He tells Carie: “If you feel that your mother has transgressed against you, then you can choose to forgive her.” Likewise, he tells Diane, “And if you feel that your daughter has transgressed against you — disappointed you, let you down — you can choose to forgive her.”

Dr. Phil points out that neither was an ideal mother or daughter because each of them is flawed. “That has kind of a symmetry to it, doesn’t it? Neither one of you were perfect … I’ve learned one thing … You don’t have to love everything a person does to love that person … Life is short. Life is short.”

He concludes with a powerful message that applies to everyone: “You don’t know if the people you love will be alive at the end of this sentence. My advice is do not let the sun set before you say and do the things with the people you love, because it may be your last chance.”

Bridget Foley’s Diary: At Balenciaga, the Who’s Next Watch Begins

Designer departs from storied house. Hasn’t Kering been there and done that recently, when it replaced Gucci’s Frida Giannini with Alessandro Michele? Yet here we go again, with Alexander Wang leaving Balenciaga after what seems like a truncated stay, despite completion of his three-year contract.
Whatever the reasons behind the split, it’s safe to assume that if both sides had been delighted with the relationship, they’d have found a way to continue on despite Wang’s understandable interest in building his own brand and seeking the revenue with which to do so. (WWD reported this week that he’s close to signing a deal with General Atlantic, the growth equity firm headed by William Ford.)
Wang is now on to the rest of his life and career, an extremely talented and still-young designer. He got a bit of a raw deal from the moment the ink was dry on his Balenciaga contract, not from Kering but from the legions of onlookers who opined about the gravitas of the house codes and whether a guy with a youth-oriented, street-centric aesthetic could rise to the occasion. Suddenly, Wang wasn’t a gifted, savvy designer who’d launched his brand within a strata that made sense for his audience,

He’s Separated, Now What? 5 Reasons You Should Avoid Dating A Man Who’s Not Divorced

However, what if the man you just met seems to be your perfect soul mate but… there is a problem. He is separated and not yet divorced? Now what? Should you pursue the relationship and take the risk for the sake of what could be love, or should you walk away? The choice is, of course, entirely yours, but chances are that the relationship will be greatly challenging and unlikely to work for a number of reasons:

Teen Admits To Killing His 11-Year-Old Brother; Who’s Really To Blame?

In July 2013, Shawna Smith reported her 11-year-old son missing. Three days later, Terry “Juju” Smith Jr. was found dead near his California home. Shawna’s other son, 16-year-old Skylor, later admitted to killing his half-brother and was convicted of voluntary manslaughter. But Juju’s father, Terry Sr., believes Shawna may have helped to bury the body and cover up the crime, accusations she vehemently denies, claiming her ex is rehashing issues from their bitter divorce.

For Anyone Who’s Ever Been Called a Nickname They Don’t Like

This is Phillip, my wonderful husband of 12 years.

2015-07-02-1435832785-2314344-DSCN3942.JPG

He was named after his mom’s dad Phillip Gordon, who was a captain in the Army Signal Corps.

2015-07-02-1435832830-7691894-grandpagordon.jpg

“Phillip” is what you’ll see written on my husband’s birth certificate, and his family has never called him anything other than Phillip. He’s never gone by anything else in his life.

His name has two syllables in it: Phil-lip. You can clap it out if you want to.

However, the world in general is absolutely convinced that his name is “Phil.” Whenever we meet someone new, here’s how the conversation goes:

“Nice to meet you, I’m Phillip.”

“Well, gee golly, it’s great to meet you, too, Phil.”

Every. Time.

It’s like some vast Truman Show — style conspiracy, where everyone seems to be in on it except for us.

But we’ve lived in far too many places for them all to be working together against us: Minnesota, Utah, Ohio, and now here in New England.

Everywhere, he gets called “Phil.” Even the emcee at our wedding reception called him Phil (and now that I’m thinking about it, I’m wondering why we paid that guy. I mean, shouldn’t there be like a 5 percent discount for calling the groom by the wrong name?)

Now, I have nothing against the name Phil. In fact, the Phils I’ve known are hilarious, nice guys.

It’s just not Phillip’s name.

We’ve moved around a fair amount in our married life, but we plan to stay here in New England and never move again. We’re putting down roots.

Which is why I was so concerned when Phillip came home from his first day at his new job here and casually mentioned that the plaque on his office door read “Phil Evans.”

“You have to get that changed!” I cried. “Right now, before all your co-workers and your boss think you go by Phil and that becomes your name for the next 40 years you work there! It might already be too late!”

(You can see that I take this somewhat more seriously than he does.)

So off he went to Human Resources and asked for a new plaque with his full name.

The next morning, he showed up at work to find that they’d gone overboard and put this up on his door instead:

2015-07-02-1435832964-8958410-nametag.jpg

(This isn’t the real thing, by the way, just an artistic representation. Phillip’s work deals with government contracts and has some super-secret “ruin the blogosphere by not allowing photos” policy.)

Long story short, he’s not “Phil” at work anymore. The downside is, he’s now the snobby guy who has to have his educational title and middle initial listed with his full name at all times.

Oh, well. We can deal.

What Anyone Who’s Been Bullied Needs To Hear

Three high school girls who say they’ve been the victims of bullying are having a hard time moving forward even though it’s been months since the alleged incidents. Hanna, 17, claims she was beat up by a girl she thought was her friend after a fight over a boy, while others stood around videotaping and laughing. Lily, 15, alleges she was hit in the head by a bully, and the incident was videotaped and posted to social media. And, Hannah, 17 says she always felt like a target of the “mean girls” in school, and the bullying got so bad that she was forced to be homeschooled.

5 Strategies For Raising A Kid Who Won’t Be A Bully

Dr. Phil tells the teens that they need to give themselves permission to move past the alleged incidents. “The big problem about being bullied is that the bullies might say something to you like 30 times, but you repeat it 10,000 times. It isn’t what they say; it’s what you say to yourself about what they say. It’s this internal dialogue you have, and you’ve got to take your power back,” he says in the video above. He explains that the girls can continue to let the past define them, or they can say, “Wait a minute. I’ve got to be my own best friend here. I have the power to choose how I feel about this. I’m not going to be embarrassed. I’m not going to be traumatized for the rest of my life.” He concludes, “Time heals nothing; it’s what you do with that time.”

Watch the Throne: A Who’s Who on “Empire”

Fox’s television series Empire, about a family in the music and entertainment business, is a smash-hit.  It has not only received rave reviews and high numbers of viewers week after week, but also weaved its way into popular culture – from being parodied on Saturday Night Live to being referenced in ads for other shows (Weird Loners).  Public figures have even claimed that elements of theirfox_empire_series lives were used as inspiration for certain characters.  And that is not totally without merit.  Therefore, with the premiere season set to conclude tonight, AllHipHop.com has compiled a “who’s who” list to see how some members of the Lyon family and Empire Entertainment compare to the real world Hip-Hop moguls and artists who have made an impact.

Lucious Lyon is Diddy and Jay Z: Lucious is the patriarch of the family of who parlayed his life experiences in the streets into a music career and helped turn Empire Entertainment into an amazingly successful company for which he sees his children being able to benefit from.  Last month, Diddy said he was suing the show for basing parts of the show on his life and the events of Bad Boy Entertainment and not compensating him for it.  Luscious Lyon and Diddy certainly share some similarities (i.e their white parties and kids who see the spotlight, having two sons involved in music) , but there are other elements of Luscious’ life that are more Sean Carter than Sean Combs.  For example, just like Hov, Luscious became a mogul because he found success initially as a recording artist discussing hustling which helped build his brand, whereas Puff made an album after Bad Boy was already an established entity.

Cookie Lyon is Lil’ Kim: By her own admission, Taraji P. Henson, who plays Cookie, has said that “she [Lil’ Kim] was a champion, and she’s certainly Cookie’s champion.”  All it takes is one scene and it’s clear to see the similarities between the two women.  In addition to their beauty and outspoken attitudes, they also both did prison time to protect the ones they care about.  In 2005, Lil Kim was convicted for lying to the grand jury to protect people in a 2001 shootout and went to jail for a year.  On Empire, Cookie has just been released from a 17-year sentence for drug dealing while Lucious benefited from the profits of those sales by using that money to build Empire Entertainment.

Andre Lyon is Damon Dash: Andre is not musically inclined like the rest of his family, but it is largely because of his business acumen that Empire Entertainment is at the level of success that it is.  Similarly, Damon Dash helped Roc-A-Fella Records and Jay Z thrive in the late 90’s and early 00’s in the same manner.  When Jay and Dame’s business relationship soured, many perceived that Dame got the short end of the stick.  And in a recent episode of Empire, Lucious voted against Andre running the company if/when he were to become incapacitated.

Jamal Lyon is Frank Ocean: They’re both very talented R&B artists who can sing and play instruments.  It’s 2015, and so their open homosexuality, while it did get some attention initially, really isn’t an issue. And just as how some in the music community ( Jay Z and Beyonce) showed Ocean support for discussing that personal detail with the public, Cookie and his brother Hakeem have been there for Jamal.

Hakeem Lyon is Tyga: Hakeem and Tyga are both mediocre rappers with upbeat energy that gives them an appeal to younger audiences, yet they both want to complete creative freedom.  Hakeem is asked to do a pop record at a Teen Choice Awards nomination ceremony (and Tyga has been linked to Kylie Jenner who co-hosted a music awards show for teen audiences), but later insists on not watering down his music.  And while Tyga has been linked to mainstream gossip because of his aforementioned connection to Jenner, he also took a no-hold barred approach to his image by working on an adult film, Rack City: The XXX Movie back in 2012.  And because the age gap between Tyga [25 years old] and Kylie [17 years old] has gotten attention, Empire flips that and has Hakeem, presumably in his late-teens, fall for an older woman instead, Camilla Marks (played by Naomi Campbell).

What do you think of Empire?  Will you be tuning in tonight for the season finale?

Who’s That Girl? Meet Fernanda Hin Lin Ly, the Pink-Haired Model Who Stole the Louis Vuitton Show

Fernanda Hin Lin Ly

As model Fernanda Hin Lin Ly leans against a Pepto pink backdrop in SoHo on a recent Monday afternoon, a pair of passersby stroll past and crane their necks—twice. The bubbly Australian beauty had better get used to it: She inspired a similar double-take reaction last week when she walked the Louis Vuitton runway in Paris, where her rose-colored hair set her apart instantly from a sea of leggy blonde and brunette counterparts, prompting a “who’s that girl?” refrain amongst showgoers seated inside Nicolas Ghesquières hypermodern set.

As it turns out, there were no pre-show trips to the salon or last-minute gimmicks leading up to Ly’s statement-making debut at the fashion house’s fall show. The eighteen-year-old model has always taken her hair into her own hands. “I was fifteen when I started [dyeing it]. I did it because I felt like it,” says Ly of experimenting with her color, which has gone through several shocking shade changes. Most recently, “I tried to go to blonde, and it came out copper. It was a disgusting orange, so I dyed it red, and slowly made it lighter and lighter,” says Ly, who has also been through variations of lavender, silver, blue, dark blue, and countless gradations of ombré. A few years back, she bought a bottle of pink hair dye, which, she recalls, inspired “a shake of disapproval from my mother—but the damage was done!”

Fernanda Ly

Expand

Photographed by Kathy Lo

That game-changing decision eventually led to Ly being spotted in a Sydney shopping center at the age of sixteen. Soon after, “I sent my photos in [to an agency], and now I’m here,” says the model, who was on holiday early last week “when I received a call to go to Paris the next day for Louis Vuitton.”

Now back in New York for a few months, her look is attracting its fair share of attention—but it doesn’t draw any stares back home. As an architecture student at the University of Technology in Sydney, “there are a bunch of us with weird hair,” she says of her classmates, adding that, if anything, “it’s odd to have normal hair.”

So what’s the upkeep for her particular shade of watercolor pink? It’s easier than you think: Ly’s favorite products include Redken’s All Soft shampoo, daily conditioner, and hydrating mask. As for the dye she uses to get her exact color, she recommends Manic Panic’s Cotton Candy Pink, which was bright at first, but has naturally faded into a seafoam variation of the shade. To maintain the integrity of the color, she washes it every third day. And while some girls her age may dream of snapping up the white shearling polar bear coat she wore down the Vuitton runway come fall, Ly is more likely to be plotting her next above-the-neck transformation. “Everyone else saves up to buy clothes—but I buy hair dye,” she admits with a smile. With dedication like that, we’ll can’t wait to see what turn her neon-toned strands will take next.

See Who’s Viewing Your Profile: LinkedIn, the Yenta

See who’s viewed your profile,” is the new, “Want to know what so and so said about you?” LinkedIn is anything but discreet. The site is like the yenta friend who can’t wait to tell you what someone else did.

Today I got an email saying that only 21 people have looked me up in the past month, making it clear that this is a pathetic number, putting me at the bottom of the pile. It was an unproductive disclosure, given the other email from them offered me a free month in an effort to lure me to upgrade to LinkedIn Premium, which would allow me to find out the names, skills, shoe sizes and whatever else they know about my 21 stalkers.

To shleppers like myself, who don’t pay, they’re cagey, identifying those viewing our profiles as, “someone in the greater Detroit area, someone in publishing” or “someone from Shijiashuang, Hebel, China.” I’m not curious enough to pay to get more specific information, preferring to guess who these someones are. The “someone in the greater Detroit area” remains a mystery, but I can live with it. I’m more curious about which of my neighbors is putting things that should be recycled into the trash. “Someone in publishing” is, no doubt, a major agent or publisher, wanting to be the first to read my memoir. “Someone from Shijiashuang, Hebel, China is probably one of those who’ve found my website, www.personalized-urns.com, and emailed offering to sell me cremation urns at wholesale prices or asking to buy huge quantities from me. I know this is a scam since I am an artist and design one-of-a-kind mosaic urns so don’t have enough years left to need or to turn out the number they claim to want.

2014-07-24-wallstclose.jpg

Another reason I wouldn’t upgrade is I feel sure that LinkedIn and would immediately announce to all the other premium members, “See who just upgraded and can now check you out and get in touch with you.”

I just hope LinkedIn doesn’t buy Google and let the world know whom we’re googling.
