Matt Barnes Wins Sole Custody Of Sons Over Gloria Govan

GQ's 2018 All-Stars Celebration - Arrivals

Source: FayesVision/WENN.com / WENN

The legal battle between former NBA player Matt Barnes and reality television actress Gloria Govan has been quite a bitter journey for the former married couple. This week, one issue that split the pair was settled when the courts awarded Barnes sole physical and legal custody of the pair’s twin boys.

TMZ reports:

The two have been at war for years — and today, Matt obtained an 18-month restraining order against Gloria claiming she’s a physical danger to him.

The restraining order was granted through May 2020 — but does not extend to the kids because the judge doesn’t believe Gloria poses a danger to them.

During Thursday’s hearing, the judge ruled Gloria will get regular visitation — including every other weekend from Friday until Monday morning. She is also allowed to have dinner with the kids every Wednesday evening.

The two are still working out the custody arrangements for the holidays including Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years.

As part of Thursday’s hearing, the judge also ordered Govan to complete 26 sessions of anger management and 10 parenting classes.

Hopefully for the good of the children, Barnes and Govan can work out an effective way to co-parent. Barnes is also expecting a baby girl with his girlfriend and model Anansa Sims.

Eco-Friendly Peggy Sue Collection Wins Canadian Prize

SEEING GREEN: Fledgling Canadian designer Peggy Sue Deaven-Smiltnieks and her sumptuous, farm-to-fashion fabrications emerged victorious at Toronto’s Design Exchange on Tuesday, beating a long list of cross-disciplinary contenders to win this museum’s Emerging Designer Award for 2017, which is worth 10,000 Canadian dollars.
“Males in the past have won this award, so it’s great that a fashion designer — and a woman — won this year,” said Deaven-Smiltnieks, who defeated architects, graphic designers, as well as furniture, interior and industrial designers to nab the prize and the chance to have her own Design Exchange exhibition, running from Wednesday to Feb. 16, 2018.
Calling the win “hugely validating,” the Toronto designer, who trained at Rhode Island’s School of Design, works directly with farmers, start-up mills and artisans to design her sustainable clothing.
This year’s judging panel included Burdifilek cofounders Diego Burdi and Paul Filek; architect Omar Gandhi; Concrete chief executive officer and graphic designer Diti Katona, and Saks Fifth Avenue Canada’s marketing director Shayne Stephens.
“If we’re talking about the future of fashion, Peggy Sue is going the right way,” said Nina Boccia, design exchange director of programs. “Her dedication to sustainability and garment construction set her apart. But it was also about the way

Quincy Jones Wins Lawsuit Against Michael Jackson’s Estate, Awarded $9.4M

Quincy Jones is getting his dough. The iconic musician and composer has won his lawsuit against Michael Jackson’s and has been awarded a cool $ 9.4M.

The New York Times reports that a Los Angeles jury agreed that Jones has been shortchanged for the use of music he produced in the posthumous Jackson films This Is It and a pair Cirque du Soleil shows.

Interestingly, Jones filed the lawsuit against MJ’s estate in 2013, claiming that he was owed $ 30M. The estate countered that he was owed only $ 392,000 because of an accounting error.

This is where we point out that Thriller, which Jones produced, is the first album to sell 30 million copies. Jones also produced Off The Wall.

“This lawsuit was never about Michael,” said Jones via a statement. “It was about protecting the integrity of the work we all did in the recording studio and the legacy of what we created.”

How Donald Trump Wins the Election (No Joke)

Don’t laugh. It’s not only possible, it’s probable. First of all, let us qualify our opening statement by noting that Trump doesn’t actually win the election for himself. Please, that’s not going to happen. Granted, we might have been gullible enough to include Sarah Palin as the vice-presidential candidate on the McCain ticket, but we ain’t stupid enough to elect a glorified frat boy as president.

But what Trump does do is win the damn election for one of his fellow Republicans — a Republican who, had Trump not been in the field, would have stood no chance against Hillary Clinton — and that little stunt is going to spell doom for us lifelong Democrats.

How it happens can be explained in two words: “Trump fatigue.”

Consider: The very things that have propelled Trump to the top of the polls (i.e., his refreshing candor, his no-nonsense approach to politics, his constant reminder that he’s too wealthy to be bought, and his tough talk about being a preternaturally accomplished “deal maker,” which is how he became so rich) will be the things that sink him.

Why? Simple: We will eventually tire of him. We will tire of Trump the same way a person tires of being served only dessert for dinner. The same way we tire of repetitious TV commercials. Because the man has no understanding of the basic policies and issues facing him — much less the remotest idea of how to address them — all he can do is spout generalities and provocative slogans.

And as this shortcoming becomes increasingly apparent, it will eventually lead to the Republicans reaching out for some “adult supervision,” and that “adult” will be Marco Rubio. He’s vaguely Kennedyesque; he’s got the hair, he’s got the ethnicity; he’s got Florida’s electoral votes, and he’s got the self-discipline not to shoot himself in the foot — which is why the “adult” won’t be the hapless Jeb Bush.

The beauty of Trump handing over the reins to Rubio lies in the public’s short attention span and its overwhelming willingness to switch to a fresh horse. By the time Rubio dashes to the front of the pack, Hillary will be seen to suffer from an affliction similar to Trump’s: “Hillary Fatigue.” Although it’s no fault of her own, she’s been in the spotlight too long.

Alas, it’s all in the timing and the presentation. Just as we finally choke (and eventually puke) on the narcissistic absurdity of Trump’s traveling carnival act, we’re going to be cloyed by seeing Hillary everywhere. Again, while it’s not her fault, being constantly presented as the Democrat’s presumptive nominee is not only going to work to her detriment, it’s going to open the door to a later arrival, some fresh face who hasn’t already worn out their welcome.

Rubio is biding his time. He will make his move when the timing is right, after the new year, after Trump has become yesterday’s news, and after we’ve all gotten used to Hillary’s line of rhetoric. Trump get Rubio elected. Get ready for the pain.

Viola Davis Makes History, Tracy Morgan Makes His Return & ‘Bessie’ Wins At 2015 Emmy Awards (VIDEOS)

(AllHipHop News) It took 67 years, but finally an African-American woman was awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The honor went to Viola Davis for her portrayal of Annalise Keating in ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder.

“‘In my mind, I see a line, and over that line I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line. But I can’t seem to get there no how. I can’t seem to get over that line.’ That was Harriet Tubman in the 1800’s,” said Davis during her acceptance speech. “And let me tell you something. The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.”

The night also saw the return to the Emmys for comedian/actor Tracy Morgan. The star of 30 Rock was involved in a serious car accident in 2014 where he suffered numerous injuries. Morgan took the stage at Microsoft Theater to hand out the award for Outstanding Drama Series.

“I missed you guys so much,” Morgan told the crowd as they gave him a standing ovation. “Thanks to my amazing doctors and the support of my family, my beautiful new wife, I’m here… standing on my own two feet.”

Other winners at the 67th annual Emmy Awards included Uzo Aduba (Orange Is the New Black) for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, Regina King (American Crime) for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie, and Reg E. Cathey (House of Cards) for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

The HBO film Bessie starring Queen Latifah and Mo’Nique took home the award for Outstanding Television Movie. HBO also won the two biggest awards of the night. Game of Thrones received the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, and Veep was awarded Outstanding Comedy Series.

‘Veep’ Wins Outstanding Comedy Series At The 2015 Emmys

“Veep” nabbed Outstanding Comedy Series at Sunday’s Emmys, breaking the five-time “Modern Family” winning streak. The celebrated HBO series won for its fourth season. Had “Modern Family” prevailed, it would have topped the record it shares with “Frasier” as the category’s most-honored show.

“Veep” also bested “Louie,” “Parks and Recreation,” “Silicon Valley,” “Transparent” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” The political comedy won several other awards throughout the night, including repeat victories for Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Lead Actress in a Comedy Series) and Tony Hale (Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series). Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci and Tony Roche also won Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for the episode “Election Night.”

Michael Jordan Wins $8.9M Judgement Against Grocery Store Chain

Don’t mess with Michael Jordan’s brand or it will cost you. The Hall of Fame basketball won an $ 8.9M judgement against a grocery story chain that used his name without his permission back in 2009.

Reports TMZ:

The now-defunct chain Dominick’s (owned by Safeway) was ordered to pay up BIG TIME after MJ argued that it ran an ad in Sports Illustrated advertising steaks with his iconic jersey number and an image that was VERY similar to his Jumpman logo.

An attorney for Dominick’s said the chain shouldn’t have to pony up more than $ 126k … even though MJ had testified that he doesn’t do any media deals worth less than $ 10 million.

In the end, the Chicago jury sided with #23 … awarding him $ 8.9 million.

No worries if you think Air Jordan is being greedy. He plans to donate the money to charity.

“It was about honesty and integrity,” said Jordan via a statement. “I hope this case sends a clear message, both here in the United States and around the world, that I will continue to be vigilant about protecting my name and identity.”

It exhibits the dilemma of letting go of what you know and embracing the opportunity for love and happiness. It is very well written and constructed. The characters mature nicely throughout this book. You can easily visualize what you are reading.  The dialogue is easy to understand. There is a lot of tension and conflict between Lucas and Amy. Lucas’ father wanted his son to find happiness and love. Lucas wasn’t ready for any type of change in his life. Lucas liked living with no attachments and wanted to keep it that way, little did he know his father already had other plans. He knew he wanted grandchildren while he could still play with them. If that was going to happen he had to do something.  Joseph Anderson has decided it's time for his three successful sons to find brides. Joseph wants grandchildren to fill his mansion, and he wants them immediately. His eldest son, Lucas, is successful in all areas of his life, except love, and Joseph begins matchmaking. He finds Amy Harper and deems her the perfect daughter-in-law. He just needs to get her and Lucas to both realize they're made for each other.  Lucas Anderson is wealthy, sexy, and stubborn. He has no desire to have any woman enter his life, causing chaos, or using his family's name. Many women have tried, and he's been successful in finding out who they are beneath their false smiles.  Amy Harper was raised in tragic circumstances and doesn't like pampered, rich men who have been handed everything with a silver spoon. She spent years finishing her education and then received a job with the Anderson Corporation. She instantly doesn't like her incredibly sexy boss, who is arrogant and thinks every woman should fall at his feet.  When Amy becomes pregnant after one reckless night of passion, she's scared he'll take the baby and run. Lucas is demanding, and used to getting his way, but Amy has just the right amount of spark to ignite his fuse, and challenges him each step of the way.  Lucas's father, Joseph, and his brothers Alex and Mark, offer laughter, love, and support. With the love of Lucas's family, who aren't only rich and successful, but also kind and giving, Amy starts to realize that being wealthy doesn't make or break a man, and starts to picture the happily ever after she never believed in for herself.

Miss Oklahoma Wins Miss USA Contest

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Olivia Jordan of Oklahoma was crowned Miss USA on Sunday, wearing a hot pink strapless dress as she deftly fielded the interview portion of the competition by saying the country needed to improve race relations to beat out 50 other contestants.

After weeks of controversy generated by pageant co-owner Donald Trump’s critical comments about Mexican immigrants, the pageant passed with no mention of the real estate mogul who was not in attendance.

Instead, the focus was on women like Jordan and others who’d worked hard to get to the stage.

The 26-year-old winner was followed by first runner-up Ylianna Guerra, 22, of Texas, and second runner-up Anea Garcia, 20, of Rhode Island. They were followed by 25-year-old Miss Nevada Brittany McGown as third runner-up and then Miss Maryland Mame Adjei, 23, rounding out the top five.

Jordan, who takes over from 2014 winner Nia Sanchez of Nevada, was a standout during the interview segment when each contestant was asked two questions and given 30 seconds to answer each. When asked what the next big issue is that the U.S. needs to tackle, she said it was race relations.

“We have not solved this issue,” Jordan said. “We really need to work on being an accepting society.”

During the second interview question about which woman should be put on the new $ 10 bill, she initially said she wished television star Oprah Winfrey was eligible before ending by suggesting Harriet Tubman, a former slave who led other escaped slaves to freedom.

Asked afterward by The Associated Press about the Trump controversy, Jordan responded: “We have freedom of speech in this country, and immigration is certainly an important issue.”

She added, “This organization is not one person. It’s definitely not just me. It’s a family. This organization celebrates diversity, and I think that was clear on the stage tonight, and I look forward to spreading a message of love and diversity and acceptance.”

The annual contest, generally known for its dazzling dresses and sexy swimsuits, was this year under an uncomfortable spotlight due to comments made by Trump, the pageant’s co-owner.

Trump slammed Mexican immigrants during his announcement that he was running for president. That led to widespread fallout against his business dealings, including the pageant.

Broadcasters, including NBC and Univision, dropped the pageant and a slew of celebrities lined up to perform, judge and host dropped out just as the pageant was kicking into high gear in Baton Rouge.

Pageant organizers rushed to fill the gap so the show could go on. Satellite and cable channel Reelz television stepped in to air the show, while assuring people that Trump would not benefit financially. It was also streamed live on the pageant’s website. And former Miss USA and Miss Universe winners were recruited as judges.

The pageant featured an evening wear and swimsuit competition as well as the question and answer session. The preliminary contest was held earlier this week and then the number of women remaining was progressively narrowed during the course of Sunday evening’s telecast.

Jordan, of Tulsa, Oklahoma attended Boston University, where she earned a B.S. in Health Science and was a group fitness instructor and a personal trainer. She has appeared in several national and international commercials and feature films, most recently, Hot Tub Time Machine 2.

Paula Shugart, who heads the Miss Universe Organization, thanked the CEO of Reelz and the returning pageant winners for stepping in to help during a news conference Sunday.

“I love you all. You are the only reason we exist,” she said to the women during a news conference Sunday.

Shugart said the challenges of the past few weeks will make for great practice for whichever woman is crownedMiss USA, teaching them how to stay focused: “You have to forget everything going on around you.”

When asked if the relationship between the pageant and Reelz would last beyond Sunday night, Stan Hubbard said the agreement was for one night only.

The 51 women represented every state and the District of Columbia.

Jordan will hold the title for a year and will go on to represent the United States in the Miss Universe pageant.

My Mother’s Love Wins

The phone began ringing early Friday morning. Friends and family wanted to make sure that I had heard about the Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage in all 50 states. I was elated. I picked up the phone to call my mom and realized that I could not reach her because she was on a plane to New Zealand to visit family. I can’t wait for her to return so we can share this news in person.

As a child, I never could have imagined this day coming in this way. Our lives were filled with fear and secrets in a culture where discrimination, violence and hatred towards lesbians and gay men was so pervasive. I was afraid all the time of people asking me questions about my mom and our home life. I knew and had seen the very real consequences for our lives and her livelihood. As a little kid, I became adept at changing the subject with friends, parents of friends, teachers, everyone. I was afraid walking in the city at night when we were all together and afraid for my mom when she was out at night with her partner. My brother told my mother to lie about who her partner was and pleaded with her to wear certain kinds of clothes and not others. I knew why he did it. The teasing from kids and the not subtle messages from teachers were in great abundance. And though I didn’t say things out loud, I also had my own internalized rules for the secrets and lies I told. When my best friend in middle school finally cornered me by asking a direct question that I could no longer avoid, I felt like my heart and lungs would stop functioning as I formed the words.

As it turned out, she responded really well. It was an amazing feeling.

I also could not have imagined the victory coming in this way because when I was a child, marriage was not the dominant issue the gay and lesbian community was fighting for. In fact, many in the community I was raised in rejected the notion of marriage. Their demands were for rights that seemed more pressing, such as safety and equality under the law in employment, schooling and housing. And as the great plague ripped through our lives killing so many vibrant gay men, we simply wanted their lives to matter and to find a way to save them. The complete dismissal of the AIDS crisis by our nation meant a death sentence for so many. I was so scared that my mom would get the “gay cancer” that everyone was talking about in whispered voices around us kids.

Yet, through all of this I knew, even as a small child, how meaningful it was that my mother insisted on a life of truth, beauty, love and justice. Her courageous choices were about her, and they were also very much about us, her kids. She knew she had to live a life that would show her children how to fully live. I will be forever grateful for the gift that this has been in my life.

2015-06-30-1435705802-6904822-ruthsusananddavid2.jpeg

This morning, we see how the arc of history bends with the slow and steady persistence of so many. A new narrative emerged that shined the light on many of these issues in unforeseen ways. As Jews, we know how powerful our stories are to shape who we are and how we see our selves as a people. The narrative of love and marriage in the United States has been transformed, and with it great change has come. Incredible change. I am so blown away by how far we have come. And at the same time I know we have so far to go.

The week’s reading from the Torah (Hebrew Bible) that coincides with the Court’s decision is Chukat. It recounts a moment when the people near the end of their journey through the wilderness gathered and sing at a well. There is love at the well for our people (most of the mates meet at a well) and in this verse (Numbers 21:17) it speaks of the people singing together at a well. But interestingly the portion does not mention Moses. Before, when we made the great exodus from Egypt and crossed the sea, the verse says “az yashir Moshe”; it was Moses who led the singing. This time it is “az yashir Israel.” It is not one single leader, it is all the people leading the song. After years of traveling in the wilderness, struggling through the wilderness, the song is now our song. I glance at Facebook and already it is filled with so many incredible images of couples and weddings. Many of these couples that I see I had the honor of standing under the chuppah with and officiating their marriage. Some of these were before marriage was legal in California, and some of them were after. They were all valid right in the moment they happened. Love was declared witnessed and affirmed by those gathered and by the presence of the divine.

Today is a day of awe and celebration for all the very real protections and rights under the law that this decision brings. And the song is ours to sing. The path forward is ours to name. There is much more for love to do. Much more song to be sung.

Safe travels across the seas, Mama. What a journey this has been.

Serena Williams Wins French Open For 20th Grand Slam Title

Serena Williams has long established herself as the G.O.A.T. and she continued to pile on to her legacy after taking control of the French Open for her 20th Grand Slam Title.

Via MSN:

The No. 1-seeded Williams took the last six games and added to her 2002 and 2013 championships on the French Open’s red clay. Those go alongside six each from the U.S. Open and Australian Open, and five from Wimbledon.

“When I was a little girl, in California, my father and my mother wanted me to play tennis. And now I’m here, with 20 Grand Slam titles,” Williams said in French. “This is very special for me. I haven’t always played very well here, but I’m really happy to win the 20th here.”

Only two women in the century-plus history of Grand Slam tennis have won more major titles than the 33-year-old American: Margaret Smith Court with 24, and Steffi Graf with 22.

Williams also stretched her Grand Slam winning streak to 21 matches, following titles at the U.S. Open last September and Australian Open in January. She is the first woman since Jennifer Capriati in 2001 to win the Australian Open and French Open back-to-back and will head to the grass courts of Wimbledon this month with a chance to extend a bid to do just about the only thing she hasn’t accomplished: win a calendar-year Grand Slam.

Williams closed the first game with a 120 mph (194 kph) ace. As if to prove her timing on returns was just fine, too, she pounded a 104 mph (167 kph) serve with a cross-court forehand so powerful and precise that Safarova didn’t bother to step toward the ball, watching the winner sail by for a break that made it 3-1 on the way to an simple first set.

Matthew Gallagher Wins $25,000 New Labels Prize

TORONTO — As a teenager in junior high, Matthew Gallagher opened his notebook and wrote, “I will have my own fashion label one day.”
Fast-forward to 2015 and Maison Matthew Gallagher, the label helmed by the 28-year-old designer from Amherst, Nova Scotia, has fulfilled that dream and more by winning the Toronto Fashion Incubator’s New Labels contest.
The win, which included a 25,000 Canadian dollar, or $ 20,450, cash prize, was revealed earlier this month after a runway show before 300 buyers and other industry figures at Toronto’s downtown event space, One King Street West.
“When my name was announced I couldn’t hear a thing. My heart was pounding,” Gallagher said. “For someone from a small town, where fashion wasn’t on everyone’s radar, this victory was a validation. But above all else, it was my first big chance to showcase my passion for bringing old Hollywood glamour back to modern dressing. That’s my great ambition,” said Gallagher, whose winning fall presentation opened with a well-tailored, all-cream ensemble set to a remix of Doris Day’s “Que Sera, Sera.”
Gallagher, along with 30 other emerging Canadian designers, entered the annual competition in December 2014. Four finalists were selected by a judging panel that included designer David Dixon and

Azealia Banks Calls BET Awards ‘Bogus,’ Says Nicki Minaj Wins ‘Every Year’

Azealia Banks is never one to hide her feelings, and it’s safe to say she’s really not feeling her BET Award nomination for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist.

Iggy Azalea, Nicki Minaj, Trina, Tink and Dej Loaf are up for the honor along with Banks, who took to Twitter on Monday to express her thoughts on the “bogus” award show:

Minaj certainly has been a favorite at the BET Awards and has taken home the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist for the last five consecutive years. She has yet to respond to Banks’ comments, but she’s likely basking in the afterglow of dropping the video for “Feeling Myself” with Beyonce.

Besides, Banks claims her comments weren’t supposed to be taken as jabs at Minaj anyway:

The 14 labels from London, New York and Paris that are taking part in this year’s program competed for the prize, which will be revealed here Tuesday. They include Mary Katrantzou, Marques Almeida, Prabal Gurung, Rodarte, Iris Van Herpen and Masha Ma.

Homeless Widow With Four Kids Wins New House On TV

When Joanne’s husband was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and dementia in 2008 at age 46, she says the life they had built together with four children began to fall apart.

“His illness progressed so much that he lost his job. We lost our only source of income,” says Joanne, now 51. “His health declined quickly, and we were forced to put him in a nursing home. The bills piled up … We were drowning. We couldn’t visit him very often because we couldn’t afford the gas.”

After the bank foreclosed on their house, Joanne and the kids resorted to sleeping in their van. Ultimately, they moved into an apartment, but it was robbed, leaving them with almost nothing except her husband’s wedding ring. “We were back on the street,” recalls Joanne.

Her husband passed away several months ago.

Joanne, an avid fan of the TV show The Doctors, entered the show’s “Million Dollar Healthy Home Sweepstakes” sponsored by Lennar, and out of hundreds of thousands of entries, she was selected through a double-blind process as the winner of an approximately $ 1.2 million home! The home is deemed “healthy” because it has energy-efficient appliances, drywall that reduces air pollution and contaminants, toxic-free paint, plumbing that promotes water conservation, and formaldehyde-free insulation.

Watch her story in the video above, including the emotional moment that she finds out her life will forever change.

Iggy Azalea Wins Top Rap Artist At The Billboard Music Awards

Iggy Azalea is officially the No. 1 rapper, at least according to the Billboard Music Awards.

The “Fancy” hit maker won the award for Top Rap Artist on Sunday night, but you probably didn’t know that since her win wasn’t televised during the awards show. Azalea bested 2013 winner Nicki Minaj, as well as Drake, J. Cole and Rae Sremmurd. Some may be left pondering one question, though: I-G-G-WHY?

Azalea’s win shouldn’t be much of a surprise, since she made Billboard history last year as the female rapper with the longest run on the Hot 100 chart. The rapper’s hit “Fancy” with Charlie XCX spent seven consecutive weeks at No. 1 and was named Billboard’s Song of the Summer last year.

In addition to “Fancy,” Azalea’s “Problem” featuring Ariana Grande became the rapper’s second biggest single in the U.S. and remained in the top 10 of the Hot 100 for sixteen weeks. When “Problem” peaked at the No. 2 spot, Azalea made even more history, matching with The Beatles as the second act ever to appear in the top two spots of the Hot 100 with their first two Billboard Hot 100 hits in the U.S. The rapper was also only the third woman to have the top two spots on the chart, alongside Mariah Carey and Ashanti.

This is Azalea’s third Billboard Music Award. She also won Top Rap Song for “Fancy” and Top Streaming Artist. Azalea was also nominated for Top New Artist, Top Female Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Digital Songs Artist, Top Rap Album for “The New Classic,” Top Hot 100 Song for “Fancy,” Top Streaming Song (Audio) for “Fancy,” the fan-voted Billboard Chart Achievement Award, and again in the Top Rap Song category for “Black Widow.”

Azalea also performed alongside Britney Spears at the award show, belting out their new single “Pretty Girls.”

Jay Z Wins Lawsuit Against Former Roc-A-Fella Engineer

Jay Z emerged victorious after a nearly one-year legal debacle with his former engineer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Jay Z and Roc Nation have prevailed in a lawsuit from Chauncey Mahan, a sound engineer who participated in the recording of Vol 3… The Life and Times of S. Carter, which produced hit tracks like “Big Pimpin,” “Do it Again” and “Things That U Do.”

Mahan’s lawsuit came to a New York federal court in July 2014 after a dramatic episode.

After working with Jay Z in the late 1990s, classified as an independent contractor, Mahan kept masters, outtakes, and other unpublished material on his harddrive. Mahan says in 2000, he let executives at Roc-A-Fella know he was in possession of this material, but never received a response.

Then in 2014, Mahan claims that a “sting operation” was the tail end of Roc Nation’s request to meet at his storage facility in Los Angeles. He alleges that Jay Z’s reps called the Los Angeles Police Department to seize the music and accused him of being in possession of stolen property, but only after cataloging the inventory.

Mahan wasn’t charged with a crime, but he would then hit back with a lawsuit that sought a declaratory judgment under the Copyright Act that thanks to his original contributions and particular work status, he should be deemed a co-owner on 41 sound recordings.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Lorna Schofield came back with an analysis of those claims, determining that Mahan had come to court too late.

Schofield gave three reasons why Mahan was time-barred from pursuing co-ownership: Roc-A-Fella’s registrations with the United States Copyright Office, the Albums’ packaging, and the absence of royalties all gave Mahan constructive notice or a reason to know of his injury well before he filed a lawsuit.

“Plaintiff asserts that a reasonable person would not necessarily have reason to know that royalties were owed to him in this situation,” writes the judge. “Considering the depth of Plaintiff’s experience in the music industry and the substantial commercial success of the Albums, this assertion strains credulity.”

Mahan’s argument that the statute of limitations only begins upon an express repudiation finds no favor with the judge nor the theory that the label’s copyrights to the albums didn’t necessarily mean it was the exclusive copyright holder for each and every song. Then, there’s the unpublished material. “Roc-A-Fella correctly asserts… that it owns the copyrights to the unpublished works as ‘derivative’ or ‘underlying’ parts of the Albums,” writes the judge.

Mahan also strikes out in an additional claim that Jay Z and his crew committed conversion and trespass to chattels — essentially stole — the masters, outtakes, and other unpublished material on his harddrive via the allegedly “sham” LAPD sting.

The judge finds that whatever Jay Z’s reps told to the cops — true or not — the communications were privileged. The judge notes there are other remedies to filing a false police report such as criminal prosecution for perjury. Almost needless to say, the LAPD has made no noise that it’s investigating the hip hop entrepreneur.

Mahan was represented by James Freeman. The defendants were repped by Andrew Bart at Jenner & Block.

Another win for Jigga Man.

Lane Bryant’s #ImNoAngel Campaign Wins With Lusciously Thick Models [Photos]

There is a beef brewing in the lingerie aisle and it’s all over the size of the woman.

Lane Bryant sent some shots in Victoria’s Secret comfort zone in the form of pleasantly thick models earlier today to kick off their #ImNotAngel campaign. It was a direct response to Vicky’s 2014 “Perfect Body” initiative that seriously alienated a huge population of female consumers. The Lane Bryant #ImNoAngel campaign brought together some of the industry’s top, so-called plus models and support from Hip-Hop legends Salt-N-Pepa.

Via Yahoo:

On Monday, plus-size retailer Lane Bryant launched a campaign for their lingerie collection Cacique, that is all about redefining sexy. The #ImNoAngel print, TV, and social media campaign stars plus-size models Ashley Graham, Marquita Pring, Candice Huffine, Victoria Lee, Justine Legault, and Elly Mayday.

“Our ‘#ImNoAngel’ campaign is designed to empower ALL women to love every part of herself,” said Lane Bryant CEO and President, Linda Heasley. “Lane Bryant firmly believes that she is sexy and we want to encourage her to confidently show it, in her own way.” The campaign, which is a response to the Victoria’s Secret’s Angels campaigns, encourages women celebrate their shape by posting selfies with the hashtag #ImNoAngel—there are already over 4,000 photos using the hashtag on Instagram. Each week on the Lane Bryant website consumers will be introduced to one of the campaign stars, beginning with Nebraska native and Sports Illustrated star Ashley Graham.

Hit the gallery below to see the fruits born from Lane Bryant’s new campaign. It looks delicious.

Taylor Swift Wins Artist Of The Year At IHeartRadio Awards

The iHeartRadio Music Awards should be called the iHeartTaylorSwift Awards.

The pop singer cleaned house at the show Sunday, winning artist of the year and song of the year for “Shake It Off,” and even assisted Madonna by strumming her guitar onstage while the pop icon sang a new song. “More than anything in the world, I just hope that any of the fans watching know how much I adore you … we’ve gotten closer and closer with each year, not further apart,” a glossy-eyed Swift said at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. “Like, you make me so happy.”

The pop star also won best lyrics for her other hit song, “Blank Space.”

Madonna, whose recent awards show performances were energetic and upbeat, toned it down when singing “Rebel Heart” while Swift played guitar next to her.

“My favorite guitar player, yeah!” Madonna said as she presented Swift with song of the year.

The second annual iHeartRadio Music Awards also featured Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown and Iggy Azalea. Guests sat at traditional tables — in the vein of the Golden Globes — instead of typical awards show seats. Chris Brown sat with Ludacris, while Swift’s table included Snoop Dogg, Ryan Seacrest and Timberlake.

The former boy band member, who earned the iHeartRadio Innovator Award for his accomplishments as an entertainer, told the audience that he was called “weird” as a teenager, and offered encouraging words to teens experiencing teasing and bullying.

“Growing up in school, no one ever called me anything close to an innovator, they called me different, they called me weird, they called me a couple of other words I can’t say on TV,” Timberlake said. “So thankfully my mother taught me that being different was a good thing, that being different meant you could actually make a difference, so tonight I want to thank my mom.”

Timberlake, whose wife Jessica Biel is pregnant with their first child, also thanked the actress, who didn’t attend the awards show which aired on NBC.

“Finally, I want to thank my best friend, my favorite collaborator, my wife Jessica,” he said.

Rihanna performed her new single, “B—- Better Have My Money,” for the first time. The b-word wasn’t bleeped throughout the performance, where Rihanna sported a bright green mink with matching knee high boots and sunglasses.

Azalea and Jennifer Hudson kicked off the show with a jail-themed performance: Azalea was dressed as an inmate and Hudson as a police officer as they performed “Trouble” with a set design that included bathroom stalls and a jail cell with laser light bars.

Nick Jonas followed the theme with his arms and neck tied in thick chains, while he sang his latest hit, “Chains,” as dancers wearing black and white stripes danced around him.

Jamie Foxx hosted the fan-voted show and performed a new song with Brown. Foxx also told jokes about celebrities, including Bruce Jenner, Suge Knight and Marvin Gaye.

“Marvin Gaye had an incredible year. Marvin Gaye had the No. 1 song featuring Pharrell and Robin Thicke,” he said. “He’s making beats in heaven. He might be dead, but he ain’t dead broke.”

Meghan Trainor, Florida Georgia Line, Snoop Dogg, Jason Derulo and Kelly Clarkson also performed during the three-hour event.

Jason Aldean, who also hit the stage, won country song of the year for “Burnin’ It Down.”

“I want to thank my new wife Brittany over there,” said Aldean, who got married last week.

Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj and Jessie J won best collaboration for “Bang Bang,” Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” won alternative rock song of the year and Calvin Harris’ “Summer” won dance song of the year.

Jeremih and YG won hip-hop/R&B song of the year for “Don’t Tell ‘Em,” beating out Beyonce and Jay Z’s “Drunk In Love.”

“Since I didn’t get my Grammy nomination for best rap album … I’ll roll with this,” rapper YG said.

Azalea and Smith — who won best new artist and accepted in a video message — were the top nominees with five apiece. They — along with Grande and Luke Bryan — lost artist of the year to Swift.

The awards show also featured numerous video packages with musicians talking about their careers, from Minaj to Imagine Dragons.

Whitney Bischoff Wins ‘The Bachelor,’ And Chris Soules’ Heart

Well, that’s a wrap!

Chris Soules handed out his last rose on the Season 19 finale of “The Bachelor” Monday night. The 33-year-old proposed to Whitney Bischoff in his hometown of Arlington, Iowa, and sent Becca Tilley home.

whitney

Soules, dubbed Prince Farming, struggled to make a choice throughout the episode, but ended up getting down on one knee and professing his love for the 29-year-old fertility nurse.

During her final date, Tilley told Soules that she was falling in love with him, but that she just wasn’t “in love” yet, while Bischoff was open and honest about her feelings, telling Soules that she was ready to get married and start a family. It’s pretty clear Soules went with the safe choice.

“There are so many things about you that I’m so excited about. It’s not work for us, it’s natural, we both want the same thing. It feels so right and it feels so perfect. And that’s what I want for the rest of my life. I love you,” Soules told a teary-eyed, and overjoyed, Bischoff, later adding, “I’m the luckiest man in the world.”

And they lived happily ever after … on the farm.

Apple wins digital music U.S. antitrust trial

Apple logo is pictured inside the newly opened Omotesando Apple store at a shopping district in TokyoBy Dan Levine OAKLAND, Calif. (Reuters) – Apple Inc won an antitrust trial on Tuesday when a U.S. jury decided the company did not act improperly when it restricted music purchases for iPod users to Apple's iTunes digital store. The verdict was read in an Oakland, California federal court. The plaintiffs, a group of individuals and businesses who purchased iPods from 2006 to 2009, sought about $ 350 million in damages from Apple alleging the company unfairly blocked competing device makers. Natalie Anderson Wins ‘Survivor: San Juan Del Sur’

After 39 days of battling the elements and competition in Nicaragua, Natalie Anderson walked away with the million dollar prize and the title of sole survivor on the finale of “Survivor: San Juan Del Sur” Wednesday night.

Anderson, Keith Nale, Jaclyn Schultz and mother-daughter duo Missy Payne and Baylor Wilson fought hard in the final immunity challenges, but it came down to Anderson, Schultz and Payne at the final tribal council. And after the jury’s vote, host Jeff Probst announced 28-year-old Anderson as the winner at the “Blood vs. Water” reunion show.

natalie

Turns out, Probst has been a fan of Anderson’s game, telling Entertainment Weekly before the finale, “I think Natalie’s big plan is that you have to do each thing at the right time and you have to have certain numbers at a certain point in the game, and then there’s a point where you can get rid of your nemesis.” And that’s what she did when she blindsided Schultz’s boyfriend, Jon Misch, in last week’s episode and set herself up for a path to success.

Runner-up Schultz had a good shot too, but Anderson definitely outwitted, outplayed and outlasted in the game.

As for the next season of the longstanding reality competition show, Probst says be prepared for twists and turns. “‘Survivor’ keeps surprising me. I’ve taped 30 seasons now and I never know what to expect. And Season 30 … delivers,” he told People. That unpredictability is why I love Survivor so much.”

“Survivor: Worlds Apart” premieres Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 8:00 p.m. ET on CBS.

Conchita Wurst, Austrian Drag Queen, Wins Eurovision Song Contest

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Austrian bearded drag queen Conchita Wurst won the 59th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday with a James Bond-inspired entry that had unleashed a wave of protests in eastern Europe before the competition.

The power ballad, “Rise Like a Phoenix,” helped Wurst — the alter ego of 25-year-old Thomas Neuwirth — secure Austria’s second victory in the competition with 290 points. The country also won in 1966. “This is dedicated to everyone who believes in a future of peace and freedom,” a tearful Wurst said as she accepted the trophy from Denmark’s Emmelie de Forrest, who won the contest last year. “We are unity.”

Pushing the boundaries of gender identity is nothing new at Europe’s annual song contest, an extravaganza known for its eclectic, sometimes unlistenable lineup of techno beats, love songs and pop tunes. The winner in 1998 was Israel’s Dana International, who had male-to-female gender reassignment surgery several years before competing.

Still, Wurst had been faced with some protests before the competition, highlighting a rift between Europe’s progressive liberal side and the traditional values and nationalist rhetoric of Russia and some other nations taking part.

Amid growing tensions over the Ukraine crisis, some in Eastern Europe have blasted Wurst as an example of the West’s decadence. Activists in Belarus had even urged the country’s state television network to bypass the live broadcasting rules by the organizers and edit the Austrian entry out of its Eurovision transmission.

After her victory, Wurst told reporters she hopes gay, lesbian, bi and transgender people around the world are getting stronger in their fight for human rights.

Asked if she had anything to say to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who introduced a law last year prohibiting so-called gay “propaganda,” Wurst said, “I don’t know if he is watching this now, but if so, I’ll say it: ‘We’re unstoppable.'”

In Vienna, the Austrian capital, fans who had gathered at one of the public viewing parties chanted “Conchita” ecstatically after the victory. Some had painted on fake beards in support.

Neuwirth, who was born in Gmunden, central Austria, entered show business eight years ago, taking part in an Austrian TV talent show. After joining a boy band that quickly broke up, Neuwirth first appeared as Wurst in another Austrian talent show in 2011. She also took part in two reality shows, including one where candidates had to survive in the Namibian desert together with native tribes.

Juries and television viewers across Europe selected her as the winner ahead of The Common Linnets from the Netherlands with 238 points and Swedish singer Sanna Nielsen with 218, meaning next year’s contest will be held in Austria.

Other notable entries included Polish group Donatan & Cleo’s semi-pornographic show featuring women in low-cut milkmaid outfits and Montenegro’s Sergej Cetkovic, who had a faux-ice skater circling around onstage.

The annual competition is supposed to be completely removed from politics. Neither Russia’s entry — teenage twins Anastasia and Maria Tolmachevy — nor Ukraine’s Mariya Yaremchuk, whose routine included a dancer running in a giant hamster wheel, alluded to the recent tensions between Moscow and Kiev.

Still, every time Russia got votes many in the audience of 10,000 booed, and when Moscow gave its respective eight, 10 and 12 points to Armenia, Azerbaijan and Belarus — all former Soviet republics — more boos were heard.

Many former Soviet republic countries gave their points to neighboring countries, except Ukraine, whose eight points to Austria were decisive for the Danish hosts to declare Wurst had won.

The first Eurovision song contest was held in 1956 in Switzerland, and the contest’s most famous winners include ABBA, Celine Dion and Johnny Logan, who won the contest three times — in 1980 and 1987 as a performer, and in 1992 as a songwriter.
