Wool Week Takes Over London’s Covent Garden With Colored Washing Machines

SPIN CYCLE: Britain’s annual Wool Week always sets out to quash misconceptions about the fabric, and this year they didn’t disappoint, unveiling an installation of stacked, colorful washing machines in London’s Covent Garden. Dubbed The Wool Care, the installation will be on show until Oct. 21, and is meant to demonstrate the fact that wool is washable, durable — and cool.
“We always thought this was the last frontier. A lot of people think you can’t throw wool in a washing machine, but you can, and when you wash wool, you’re not creating micro-plastics. Wool biodegrades naturally in the sea,” said Peter Ackroyd, chief operating officer for Campaign for Wool.
Hackett, Vivienne Westwood, Marks & Spencer and Adidas are among some of the retailers who took part in the launch earlier this week. “Vivienne Westwood has spread the message of wool extremely well, she talks about buy well, buy less, buy wool,” Ackroyd said.
Jeremy Hackett of the men’s wear brand Hackett unveiled the installation with his dog Muffin and his Aston Martin, which has bespoke wool interiors. Among the other retailers who are preaching the gospel of wool is the outdoor apparel brand Finisterre, which is changing the perception of wool as an “old-fashioned and stuffy” material.

Wool Gets the Spotlight at Paris Museum

PARIS – A flock of sheep invaded the Palais de Tokyo in Paris this weekend as part of a global awareness campaign orchestrated by The Woolmark Company.
The three-day event, ending Sunday, includes artwork made of wool, a photo exhibit about the natural fibre, and a series of dance performances showing off wool’s versatile nature.
Brands, including Adidas, which developed running apparel based on wool, and Dormeuil, supplier of fine wool fabrics to bespoke tailors including Cifonelli, Camps de Luca and Brioni, set up stands to let visitors get physical.
WWD caught up with Peter Ackroyd, global strategy advisor for The Woolmark Company, at the event.
WWD: What is so special about wool?
Peter Ackroyd: Its diversity. It can be made into suits, blankets or sportswear, and we think we don’t even know all the end-uses of wool. But it’s not only a very diverse fibre — at the end of its life it goes back to earth and enriches the soil. It doesn’t end up as landfill. We put a wool sweater next to an acrylic sweater in Prince of Wales’ garden. In five months, the wool sweater has almost entirely gone back to nature, the acrylic one — you just shook it and put it

Stella McCartney, Patagonia Address Alleged Cruelty at Ovis 21 Wool Farm

LONDON — Stella McCartney said Friday that she has stopped sourcing sustainable wool from the Ovis 21 network in Patagonia, Argentina, after viewing a video released by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which alleges the mistreatment of lambs there.
PETA’s video purports to show the sheep on an Ovis 21 farm being injured while being sheared, then being skinned and killed. McCartney said after viewing the video — made last year by PETA — her label conducted its own investigation into the ranches there, and found that one out of the 26 ranches mistreated its sheep. “It is one too many,” said McCartney in a statement on her Facebook page. “As a designer who built a brand on not using leather, fur or animal skins in its designs, I can’t tolerate it.”
McCartney said she would monitor suppliers “even more closely,” and is looking into developing a vegan alternative to wool, in the same way that her label has developed alternatives to leather and fur.
Outdoor clothing label Patagonia, which also works closely with the Ovis 21 network, posted a statement on its Web site Wednesday, calling PETA’s video “disturbing.” “We are not immune to shocking images,” the statement read. “There

There are things that must not be discussed. Like going outside. Never mention you might like going outside. Or you'll get what you wish for.
