For stars, Super Bowl performances might not be worth the headaches

The Super Bowl halftime show was originally seen as a clever way to capitalize upon the world’s biggest TV stage. For the NFL, it offered the chance to retain more of the game’s audience during the extended break, and maybe increase tune-in among younger viewers. For artists, it was a massive promotional opportunity. Win-win.

Worth The Wait: Thanos & Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Deliver In ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Avengers: Infinity War

Source: Marvel Studios/Disney / Marvel Studios/ Disney

It took 10 years but Thanos has finally arrived to deliver our favorite superheroes the fade. Anxiety levels have been on high for Marvel fans as they wondered for years about this film and if directing duo of Anthony Russo and Joe Russo could deliver the goods. We are happy to report they did and then some.

Avengers: Infinity War is as epic as predicted and what would you expect from a movie featuring all of Marvel Studios titular characters. To bring everyone up to speed quickly, Infinity War is a culmination of all of the Marvel Studios films leading up to the epic showdown with the Mad Titan aka Thanos and his quest for the precious and powerful Infinity Stones. There is no need for character building in this film because fans already know what is at stake and are well acquainted with all of the players except one…Thanos and his loyal and very dangerous disciples.

With everything already set up, it allows the Russo Brothers to jump into the story immediately and pick right up where Thor: Ragnarok left off. A movie as massive as Avengers: Infinity War could be confusing as there are so many stories to be told due to the fact there are so many dynamic characters.  They masterfully find a way to keep your interests peaked in each character’s quest as they all lead to the climactic showdown with the feared Marvel villain.

Avengers: Infinity War

Source: Marvel/Disney / Marvel/Disney

Each character from Iron Man (Robert Downy Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) down to Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen)  has their moment to shine as well some more than others but not one of them wasted their on-screen opportunity to wow moviegoers. Their on-screen chemistry was also on point helping to deliver well-timed comedic moments that worked every time in spite of the disastrous circumstances around them. BUT it’s the sense of fear all of the heroes convey that we have not seen from them as they learn that this battle is has more dire consequences than any other they have been a part of. The Russo Brothers manage to have this same fear rub off on the viewer. But honestly the star of this movie wasn’t the Earth’s mightiest heroes, it was the universes greatest threat.

Josh Brolin is masterful as Thanos who after this film an argument could be made easily that he is one of, if not THE greatest MCU villains ever. Move over Killmonger, Loki, and Hela.  Brolin’s voice gives the CGI enhanced character much-needed life as there are moments viewers can honestly feel some form of empathy for the villain on his conquest to vanquish everyone. There were even times when Thanos was just as much sad as he was hell-bent on wiping out everyone with the snap of his fingers.

Avengers: Infinity War manages to carry on the consequential feeling that Ryan Coogler did for Black Panther so effortlessly. The 2h 40m epic is exhausting and that is by no means a bad thing cause it takes on you on an emotional rollercoaster. It’s the films climatic battle in the beautiful fictional world of Wakanda that will leave you speechless. Once the film ended there was a wave of silence that I could honestly say as avid Marvel movie watcher I never seen or experienced before. This isn’t just a colorful comic book movie this is an experience and it will require a lot of processing after viewing. Make no mistake Avengers: Infinity War was worth the 10-year wait and is the Avengers movie fans have been clamoring for. Hell, some fan reactions that hit Twitter last night can attest to that.

Avengers: Infinity War Okoye & T'Challa

Source: Marvel/Disney / Marvel/Disney

Where the movie belongs in the pantheon of Marvel’s cinematic gems is on the viewer but that distinction is based solely on the viewer. There is no doubt this film deserves to be in the question when it comes to which one of the films were the greatest without a doubt.

Oh don’t be that person and leave when the movie is over, you will be rewarded for sitting through those credits.

Final Verdict: Masterful

The French Girl Beauty Secret That’s Worth Trying This Season

micellar water

French women are globally recognized for the je ne sais quoi of their “I woke up like this” tousled hair and flawless skin. But when it comes to those glowing complexions, anyone who has visited a Paris pharmacy can tell you their secret: micellar water, the cult beauty product that hydrates, cleanses, and gently removes makeup without overdrying, which has been a Gallic go-to for decades.

“It’s the modern soap,” explains New York City facialist (and Paris export) Isabelle Bellis, who regularly uses it in her bespoke treatments. Acting like a multitasking solution, most formulas don’t require additional rinsing with water, which can further strip sensitive skin in the colder months. Bellis, however, uses it almost like a toner, swiping a soaked cotton ball over the skin after cleansing, then following it with a gentle mist of thermal water, which contains more nourishing minerals and fewer chemicals than what comes from the tap.

The beloved product, which has become increasingly available stateside in recent years, has been spotted in the kits of backstage makeup artists and the bathrooms of models worldwide, with Bioderma’s Sensibio H20 and Orlane’s brightening, antioxidant-rich formula topping the must-have list. But micellar water’s magic properties don’t stop there. Paris-based makeup artist Violette also relies on it to master a sleek cat-eye. “To perfect the line, I use it on a Q-tip and clean up the edges,” she says. “No need to rinse—it’s superfast and efficient.” Enough said. Here are the nine formulas worth considering for your own medicine cabinet.

‘My Mom Is Worth Millions: Is Her Husband A Catch Or A ‘Catfish’?’

Deanna was on a family vacation in Malaysia when she met James, a Nigerian whom she later married — even though she lives in Canada and he’s in Nigeria.

In their six years of marriage, Deanna says she has visited James eight or nine times, but he has been unable to come to Canada because, she says, he was denied a visitor’s visa. She estimates that she has spent up to $ 500,000 on travel, some gifts like jewelry and watches, and sending some cash. “To me, that’s not high. That number doesn’t jar me,” says Deanna, who is a successful business owner.

“There’s no doubt that if the Canadian government could see us together, they would believe that our marriage is definitely real. I want to get to be with my husband,” Deanna says in the video above. “I want us to be a normal man and wife.”

But Deanna’s son and brother say they believe she is being “scammed,” which both Deanna and James vehemently deny. “He’s living like a king in a third-world country. I see Mom being James’ cash cow, and he knows it,” says her son, Jordan. “He’s going to keep that coming as long as he can.”

Why does James have passports with different ages and names? What do Deanna and James’ marriage documents reveal? See what Dr. Phil uncovers and how Deanna responds when the marriage she describes as “perfect” may not be what it seems.

6 Blow-Dry, Braid, and Bob Bars Worth Visiting in London This Week

Lily Donaldson Terry Richardson Vogue

British girls may be known for their artfully rumpled hair, but make no mistake—it takes a masterful hand to conjure that kind of easy insouciance. Once something of a novelty in the city, blow-dry bars (and their quirkier braiding counterparts) have been taking London by storm, with a flurry of new speed studios opening their doors. If you’re in the city this weekend, there’s no shortage of destinations worth adding to your black book.

The Bob Bar at George Northwood
Ever wanted to try a bob but weren’t sure you could actually commit? Then step into hairstylist George Northwood’s salon and have a seat at his “try before you buy” Bob Bar. There, a lineup of realistic-looking wigs inspired by the signature lengths of Jennifer Lawrence, Gwyneth Paltrow (as Margot Tenenbaum), Alexa Chung, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley can be tried on and adjusted before you submit to the shears.

The concept is simple, the execution spot-on. Realizing there wasn’t something that catered to the fun and frivolous nature of the braid, Braid Bar founders Sarah Hiscox and Willa Burton set about launching their power plaiting studio in the style of a blowout bar. After popping up at events and festivals such as Port Eliot and Secret Garden, The Braid Bar has found a permanent home in Selfridges; during London Fashion Week, they’ve also set up a pop-up outpost on Brewer Street, right opposite the British Fashion Council’s Headquarters.

The Celebrity Piercing Guru With a London Pop-Up Worth Visiting This Week

london tattoo pop-up shop

The “tragus,” the “rook,” the “conch”: A new vernacular of vocabulary has been circulating amid fashion editors, street style stars and British It girls this week, as they discuss which body part to get pierced at a highly anticipated pop-up during London Fashion Week. Sparked, perhaps, by the carryover effect of Brooklyn’s booming piercing culture, or the sight of Givenchy’s elaborate lobe and septum rings on the fashion house’s Fall 2015 runway, the trend is now gaining traction in London. But while its visual impact is immediate, its subtler nuances can be hard to get right. The jewelry needs to be delicate, the placement is key, and an expert eye is needed to make sure that the earrings sit ‘just so.’ So when it was announced that New York City–based piercer and jewelry designer Maria Tash—whose clients include Zoë Kravitz, Scarlett Johansson, and Gwyneth Paltrow—was doing a pop-up in Holland Park this week, a flurry of bookings immediately followed suit. Open for only four days at the Josh Wood Atelier in Holland Park, we suggest you start queuing up now.

Fifth Harmony’s Views On Beauty Are The Perfect Reminder That You’re ‘Worth It’

After launching into stardom straight from “The X Factor,” the girls of Fifth Harmony have seen their share of fame. Luckily, they haven’t gotten caught up in the ridiculous beauty standards that come with it.

In a “come-as-you-are type of editorial,” the girl group opened up to Teen Vogue about all things beauty. Wearing minimal makeup at the shoot, the five singers revealed how they stay confident in a society that constantly stresses the importance of physical qualities.

In her interview, 22-year-old Ally Brooke Hernandez explained she felt insecure for years (and sometimes still does), but the people she surrounds herself with help her feel confident.

“I started feeling more confident [recently] because of the people around me making me feel that way!” she said. “I’m still insecure and I’ll probably always be that way, but feeling support and love is so nice… and seeing other people embrace their natural beauty is fun, too.”

Normani Kordei, 19, dealt with insecurities growing up as well, especially when it came to her skin color. Now, she’s learned to embrace it.

“[Something] that’s been a big obstacle [for me] is that I’m African-American, and in the group, I’m the one [who] stands out because I’m darker complected,” she told Teen Vogue. “I find it to be beautiful now and I have security with myself, and I’m in this position to inspire young black girls and boys to do whatever they want despite their skin color.”

Teen Vogue also asked the singers what beauty meant to them. For 18-year-old Camila Cabello, beauty is more than skin-deep and comes in many forms.

“Beauty is the love you convey with your eyes… or when you cheer up a friend when they feel down, when you read a book you’re really excited about, when you make art you’re really excited about,” she told Teen Vogue

Lauren Jauregui, 19, echoed that sentiment, explaining that beauty ”comes from within and shines from within, because if you’re a beautiful person inside, people will automatically see that on the outside as well.”

There’s no doubt the group’s views on beauty are refreshing, and 18-year-old Dinah Jane Hansen summed them up best. She shut down unrealistic beauty standards while also calling into mind the girl group’s self-love hit “Reflection.”

“Growing up, I used to want to be the girl in the magazine, with a perfect face or body, and I’ve come to realize true beauty is what’s within,” she said. “It’s the girl that’s happy with her own reflection.”

Head over to Teen Vogue to read more of Fifth Harmony’s views on beauty and see more photos.

Rentboy: For What It’s Worth

This past Tuesday, federal officers, largely comprised of Department of Homeland Security personnel and with the help of the NYPD, raided the offices of Rentboy.com in Manhattan. The CEO as well as five current and one former employee were arrested, either at the office or at their home. As Melissa Gira Grant reports for Vice, they are charged with “conspiring to violate the Travel Act,” a law that ups lesser charges for the illegal act of prostitution (generally a matter for states and municipalities) to the federal level when those activities cross state lines.

This is not the first time the fed has taken down an escorting gateway: in June of last year, website myRedbook was taken down. More recently, Backpage has come under fire after allegations of sex trafficking from a sheriff’s department in Illinois. What is intriguing about the raid of Rentboy compared to those two examples is the excruciatingly gendered way that the complaint levied by law enforcement reads: thus far, the charges announced for Rentboy are illegal prostitution over state lines. In the case of Backpage, the charges for prostitution were levied along with sex trafficking, often in the same breath. Constantly, the two terms were paired together, as if to imply that the two distinct activities (both illegal, but the latter morally abhorrent) go hand in hand. This is not (at least, not yet) the case with the Rentboy complaint, a site primarily devoted to connecting male escorts with other men. It is likely that charges will change, though: money laundering was suggested by a few outlets, and there is the possibility of the feds finding advertisements posted by users under the age of majority in the servers now in their possession.

The government pointedly issued its lurid account of gay male sex for money in court the same day. For those who don’t pay for sex, it may seem like an outlandish practice, but if current events have any say in your sexual peccadillos, you’re running out of options besides the old religious standard of wedding and bedding one person for the rest of your life.

Perhaps you were one of the people who instead had an account on Ashley Madison, a website that advertises itself as a discreet tool for straight married men who want to hook up with people who are not their spouse; motto: “Life is Short, Have an Affair.” Ashley Madison was the victim of a hack and massive data dump of the information of 33 million users, and now media organizations are trolling through the information to try to find prominent individuals with accounts — some are obligingly offering up free services to allow people to find people they know (such as a spouse, potential employee, member of the legislature, etc.) who may have had an account on the website via an email or phone number search.

There’s no disputing that the raid on Rentboy and the hack are major clickbait. Putting aside the ad hoc puritanical moralism deployed in both cases (of which Glenn Greenwald of The Intercept opines in the Ashley Madison case that “busybodies sitting in judgment of and righteously condemning the private, sexual acts of other adults remains one of the most self-satisfying and entertaining — and thus most popular — public spectacles”), there is an overwhelming sense of one thing: there is a huge market for discreet sexual encounters, one that both sites once filled.

The growing government crackdown on an entire industry full of hard-working, whatever-happens-behind-closed-doors-is-our-business professionals comes on the heels of the Amnesty International board’s decision to make sex worker rights an issue of human rights, and part of their global advocacy efforts. The sentiment has been echoed, at the time of this writing, by several large LBGT rights organizations: the Transgender Law Center, Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), Lambda Legal, the National Center for Lesbian Rights and the National Center for Transgender Equality. Expecting discreet, professional and satisfactory sexual service from someone whose method of making ends meet is constantly under the jeopardy of being denied is a tall order. Despite moral opprobrium, subjection to second-class status, lack of affordable and accessible health care and housing, benefits of any kind and above being in legal jeopardy, many sex workers do a bang up job, and should be applauded and supported for it.

The message from the federal government has largely been a threat to the lives and livelihood of US citizens, who are, it must be said, under the law, criminals. More so, though, that the country is less invested in addressing larger, systemic issues of racial, economic and anti-LGBT injustice and more interested in criminalizing the individuals most marginalized by those systems. It should be clear that in the entirety of the complaint issued by the fed there is absolutely no pretense of victimhood on any particular person or entity’s part. Again, Rentboy is, at least not yet, charged with “trafficking.” As Scott Shackford put it in Reason, “there is absolutely nothing in the complaint that even hints at the idea that there is anything non-consensual happening, that so much as a single human being is harmed, even tangentially, by letting men pay for sex with other men.”

The potential for a money laundering charge in the Rentboy case is probably the most laughable — in the almost two decades that Rentboy has been operational, the total amount of money laundered in the United States by financial institutions is estimated at $ 5 – $ 10 trillion. This is a conservative estimate. The fed and NYPD seized $ 1.4 million from RentBoy, which, according to federal asset forfeiture rules, would likely be split among the agencies involved — not even a tiny fraction of a drop in the bucket for the US banking industry in a year, though perhaps a sizeable enough prize for the NYPD. Again, this was largely carried out by the Department of Homeland Security, whose “core missions,” according to their website, are to prevent terrorism and enhance security, secure and manage US borders, enforce and administer immigration law, safeguard and secure cyberspace and ensure resilience to disasters.

Now you might say: what about that Gawker piece, roundly and rightly criticized, on a sex worker who outed a wealthy but not prominent executive at a rival media corporation? An example of the type of person attracted to the sex industry, you might say. Fair point, perhaps, but I think it’s also safe to say that this particular sex worker’s well-documented history of conspiracy-theory hocking puts him safely in the “Florida Man” subset of humanity (that is, not representative of the whole but easy and fun for some to gawk at). Gawker’s approach to making things news is couched in the same type of moralistic paternalism that the Ashley Madison hackers used to justify their leak: “learn your lesson and make amends,” as the group put it. A family was ruined in the case of Gawker’s article, and, in the eye-for-an-eye mob justice approach commonly taken by the internet, the sex worker involved was quickly identified and had his personal information made public.

Perhaps you were part of the internet commentariat that joined in denouncing the Gawker article, but your outrage probably missed one thing: paying someone to have sex is illegal in this country (unless the sex worker is in a brothel in a very small number of rural counties in Nevada). To quote Charlotte Shane, “If you all want a world where men pay for sex without risking shame in the process, maybe don’t create one in which sex workers are reviled.” The vast majority of the time, when there are news stories involving the hiring of someone for sex, it is a part of your local police department’s news blotter, probably naming the individuals involved in the transaction (whom are both guilty of misdemeanors by state law). Occasionally yet far too often, it is because a sex worker was brutally attacked, raped or even murdered: the Sex Workers Outreach Project USA does the sad work of memorializing the dead. To be sure, stories involving sex workers are made far more public when there is some sort of social injury done to the john, as opposed to physical injury to the sex worker.

The same method of punishing the easiest to punish is sadly also being applied in the case of Rentboy. There can be no doubt that it is not just the defendants in the case levied by the federal government whose lives are turned upside down: the advertisers on the site are bereft of their method for making ends meet. I am colleagues with several of these people, and some are friends. They are scared. The government has access, in the seized servers, to all of their personal information, not to mention that of their clients. The number of lives wrecked by this move of the federal government is large, and now their work is pushed to the much more dangerous option of going back underground, or on to the streets, as was the case in the myRedbook and Backpage shutdowns. Many of these people lack the social and financial safety nets of criminals much further down the downright wicked spectrum in the United States, whose white collar crimes continue to go under-reported and under-punished.

As to why now, why this crackdown on internet-enabled sexual commerce is occurring so recently, that is an excellent question. Not being a journalist, I have the blessed privilege of being able to wildly speculate. Since this is the internet, let me do so now, in order of most likely to least likely:

1. Money: Rentboy, though a decidedly small fish when it comes to making money in the sex field, was perhaps a large enough fish to fry that it was a juicy target for the NYPD. It is highly likely, considering the efforts already involved in Operation Choke Point (which targeted industries where money laundering is most likely to happen and includes the adult entertainment industry), that operations like Rentboy were under increased government scrutiny with an eye towards their finances and the potential fallout or lack thereof that could result from seizing said finances.

2. Politics: It is election season, one in which gay marriage has been approved by the Supreme Court. In the face of homophobic voters likely to cast ballots for Republicans, this could be a show of force by the Obama administration on sexual deviancy. The idea that sex workers deserve the rights afforded to other workers has a home only on the extreme ends of the political spectrum (far left and libertarians), and would be unlikely to upset most Democratic voters while reassuring some Republicans. Add to that the fact that these sex workers were gay men, practicing all sorts of perversions, such as diaper play or BDSM (as outlined by Grant), selling their sex, and you’ve got the makings of an easy victory for the moral majority.

3. Vengeance: The previously mentioned Gawker article came out in mid-July. Considering that parts of the testimony by the federal government include contact with Rentboy at their Hookies award ceremony in December of 2014, it is impossible that this led to an investigation. It is not impossible, but maybe improbable, that a well-connected victim of this article’s outing was able to make a few phone calls, and for a federal agency to exact a type of retribution on intel already gleaned, per point 1 above. Not to mention that of all of the occupations most in the loop on the misdeeds of Very Important People, sex workers are by far the most vulnerable.

As a current sex worker and someone who advertised on Rentboy himself stated, “The people at Rentboy weren’t doing anything wrong — they were doing something illegal.” It is a law affecting a large segment of our economy that has always been there, and one that it is high time it changed. The most prudent path, the one that benefits the most people, would be to make laws against sex work a relic of the past, much like laws against gay marriage should be. This is more than the battle for current sex workers — this is a cause that anyone whose decisions regarding what they did with their body and their sex were circumscribed by the law should take up for the battle cry for. Whatever your opinion of sex work, though, we should at least be able to agree that our government has more important issues to tackle.

Ryan Reynolds Premieres ‘Deadpool’ Trailer; It Was Worth The Wait

Unlike his character in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” Ryan Reynolds doesn’t need to keep his mouth sewn shut about “Deadpool” anymore.

An early version of the trailer debuted at Comic-Con and a teaser for it has already gone viral, but on Tuesday, Reynolds finally premiered the official Red Band trailer for the “X-Men” spinoff on “Conan.” And (spoiler alert!), it was amazing.

The official trailer was slightly different than the one shown at Comic-Con, but it still had all the insane action, inappropriate language and DMX background music we’ve been waiting for.

To debut the trailer, “Conan” actually had to change its parental guidance rating to TV-MA for more mature audiences. Yup. You read that right: “more mature” audiences. Whoever came up with that distinction clearly doesn’t know much about “Deadpool.”

“Deadpool” is set to hit theaters in February 2016.

13 Stunning Diamond Earrings That Are Well Worth the Investment

daria strokous

It is probably safe to assume that you are not coming to this site for financial advice, but that is what is so surprising, so wonderful! about Vogue.com—you never know what you will find.

A few months ago, right around tax time, I was talking to a finance guy I know—yes, I know all kinds of people—sort of bragging that I had fallen madly in love with a very expensive piece of twenties diamond jewelry, but I was so fiscally responsible that I would never in a million years buy it. He stunned me when he said,  “Actually, Lynn, you should get it! It will appreciate more than the pathetic interest rate that you get now for your CDs, and in the meantime, you will have the joy of wearing it every day.”

Deeply persuasive and most welcome as this argument was, I didn’t buy the jewelry (well, at least not yet). But it got me thinking: Could investing in fabulous jewelry be a high-finance version of having your cake and eating it too? Wouldn’t spectacular diamond earrings, reposing close to your flushed cheek, warm your face—and your heart—far more profoundly than a stupid financial statement ever could?

With this in mind, Vogue.com presents this heartbreakingly lovely array of  diamond earrings—mix them! Match them! Wear them singly, or pierce still more holes in your ears and have a party! Remember: You’re not just thinking about looking beautiful; you’re also considering their long-term earning potential. Or as Lorelei Lee once observed:  “Square-cut or pear-shaped, these rocks don’t lose their shape.”

New Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Trailer Is Worth Binge Watching [VIDEO]

Let the development details for the stand-alone Ben Affleck Batman flick wait.

The new Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer recently premiered at San Diego Comic-Con 2015 and it’s everything fans have hoped for and more.

Up until this point, most of the film’s plot was kept under wraps but the latest teaser reveals much of what we can expect out of the story.

After the events of Man of Steel has led to immense skepticism amongst homo sapiens, Superman (Henry Cavill) has found himself on the wrong side of public opinion–with Batman being his biggest detractor. All the while Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor is seizing the distraction to unfold one his mastermind plots on both Metropolis and Gotham City.

Love & Hip Hop Hell: Nikki Mudarris Causes $30K Worth Of Damage At Mally Mall’s Crib [VIDEO]

When the inaugural season of Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood ended, both Mally Mall and Nikki Mudarris appeared they were singing “IDFWU” to each other. Obviously their relationship has a resume button because Nikki Mudariss was recently hauled off by police officers and she destroyed all the good china.

Via TMZ:

‘Love And Hip Hop’ stars Nikki Mudarris and Mally Mall’s breakup just went NUCLEAR — he says she went berserk, smashing $ 30k worth of fine china … until the neighbors called the cops, and we got the video.

We’re told Nikki showed up at Mally’s home in Bev Hills Monday night and refused to leave — and took out her rage on the fancy plates … which she claims she bought.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ … cops showed up just before 11 PM for a report that Nikki was vandalizing the property. We’re told she cooled down at the sight of badges, but Mally caught her making a quick exit in this video.

Mall didn’t want to press charges on his ex … so cops just escorted her off the property.

Sources close to Nikki say she freaked out because Mally broke her custom made iPhone 6 in a jealous rage days earlier. Since she paid for the china … this seems like the worst revenge ever.

Mally seemed to recover just fine — we got him later that night leaving Ace of Diamonds strip club, where he’d just dropped $ 20k!

The struggle can be viewed in the video below.

LGBTQ initiative “Our Tomorrow”: How to make it worth the effort

On May 4, 2015 a grassroots coalition representing 100 groups launched an initiative called ‘Our Tomorrow” designed to hear from the LGBTQ community how they see their lives today and their concerns for the future. You can still add your voice to those LGBTQ people across the country who have joined the conversation about our future at www.shareourtomorrow.org.

Just looking at the comments and words used to describe the feelings of those who responded to the initiative thus far it could be easy to conclude we didn’t need this initiative. Anyone who has worked in the fight for civil and human rights for the LGBTQ community could have told you what people would say.

Responses were divided into three categories; Hopes, Fears and Ideas. The answers weren’t surprising. Hopes included that LGBTQ people aren’t finished pushing for full “equality” and “acceptance.” They hope for an “inclusive” future that values “diversity” and where LGBTQ people have more legal “rights,” where they receive “respect” and “support” from their family, and where they can feel “safe.”

Fears included worry that “society” won’t change overnight, and we could even experience a “backlash.” Participants fear “discrimination” will persist, and that LGBTQ people across the country will still be subject to “violence” and “hate,” particularly from “religious” communities. They worry the movement will forget its “history” and fail to learn from the “past.”

And the ideas focused on “educating” people about our community and making the movement more “inclusive.” Some examples of individual responses from the website are; “Begin modeling another way of relating to those who think differently than we do. The hatefulness has got to be replaced with modeling a way of understanding and compassion- Geoff, Tulsa. One thing our community can do to make our tomorrow brighter is to do more to reach out to diverse sectors and include them. Also, listen to their stories and educate ourselves on different cultures- Darren, Denver, CO. One thing our movement can do to make tomorrow brighter is to get more people involved. We need to show people that we are not backing down from them and that we are a FORCE to be Reckoned With!- Monique, Evansville, IN. As a movement we need to increase legislation to protect those who cannot protect themselves. But individually we need to be open, honest and educated. The more people see us as people the less we can be dehumanized by the masses. It is not us versus them; it is all of us trying desperately to find our way in life- Kristin, Abingdon, VA. Don’t assume that successes (ballot initiatives, marriage bans being declared unconstitutional, etc.) are instantly going to change someone’s mind. There is still work to be done to win people over who may oppose marriage equality or whatever the issue is. Consider what we can do to bring others to our side- Ryan, Silver Spring, MD”

As a long-time, older, white LGBT activist (one still not comfortable adding the Q or additional letters to the acronym) I could have written this without asking for anyone else’s opinion. But that is part of the problem existing today within the leadership of the LGBTQ community. We can enunciate the problems and intellectually share the fears and hopes of the broader community; but most of us don’t really feel them in our daily lives.

We have yet to invite and include a younger and more diverse group of LGBTQ activists to help lead us into the future. We have moved the LGBTQ community forward in legal terms with lightning speed. We have succeeded in ridding ourselves of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell; passed hate crimes legislation; and are on the precipice of winning a guarantee of marriage-equality from the Supreme Court.

Yet members of the LGBTQ community are still beaten up for being who they are. Can marry one day and be fired and turned away from accommodations the next. Young LGBTQ people are bullied in school and thrown out of their families because they tell them they are gay and told they can’t worship in many churches because of who god made them.

We need only look to the African American community to understand even with full equality under the law, changing a culture, people’s hearts and minds, doesn’t come easily. The massacre based on hate and fear in the church in Charleston, South Carolina, is a stark reminder of that. Women are not included in the Constitution and we can’t pass an Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).

So to make the ‘Our Tomorrow‘ initiative valuable it must have a lasting impact. That will only happen if it is followed up with action. The current leadership in the LGBTQ community must take to heart and act on the fact there is a lack of diversity in our leadership, including racial diversity, gender diversity and age diversity. If the ‘Our Tomorrow‘ initiative promotes real change it will have accomplished something. This will not be easy and first must come recognition and acceptance that leadership cannot be based on wealth or white male privilege alone.

One way to move forward may be to have a ‘Summit for Our Tomorrow‘ sponsored by the LGBTQ’s major civil rights organizations. They must ensure every group within the LGBTQ community is equally represented at such a meeting. The outcome must be a blueprint for equality in our own community leading to making the future leadership of all our organizations representative of the community as a whole. Outcomes must include development of new initiatives planned with the input of those who are impacted by them, and ensuring they have a leadership role in moving them forward.

It is only together we can respond to the hopes and fears of members of the LGBTQ community as enunciated in ‘Our Tomorrow‘ and ensure this and future generations can live safe, secure and happy lives with full civil and human rights and acceptance within the greater community.

David Chang’s New Fried Chicken Sandwich Is Worth the Wait

Photographed by Steven Meisel, Vogue, September 2010

Every summer, there’s one trendy food item—the Cronut, the ramen burger, Chocolate Chip Cookie Shots—that keeps New Yorkers waiting in long lines under the blazing sun. And now, 2015’s most prized creation is finally here: The fried chicken sandwich at Fuku.

Fuku, an East Village restaurant that opened today, is owned by celebrity chef David Chang and is the newest addition to his Momofuku empire, which includes Noodle Bar, Ssäm Bar, Ko, and the Milk Bar shops. For his newest venture, Chang’s ambition stretches beyond a single brick and mortar—he hopes to turn Fuku into a high-end fast-food chain (think Shake Shack for chicken or a fancy Chick-fil-A).

Fuku chicken sandwich and fries.

A photo posted by Nick Solares (@nicksolares) on

I arrived five minutes before the restaurant’s opening, and I was the tenth person in line. The service was relatively quick, especially for opening day, and the food is actually pretty worthy of the avalanche of impending hype. The chicken is spicy, but not overly so, and it’s remarkably juicy. The massive piece of thigh meat is served on a classic Martin’s potato roll with mild pickles, and a spread of savory butter. It’s elevated Chick-fil-A—without any of the homophobia—what more could a New Yorker want?

There are fries, too, of course, which are done in the style of the potato wedge. If sublimely greasy fare isn’t your bag, there’s a vegetarian option—the Fuku salad, which includes farro, kale, shiso, sesame seeds, and mandarin oranges. The restaurant also offers a full cocktail menu, including a michelada made with Momofuku’s signature ssäm sauce.

By the time noon rolled around, the line had snaked around the block. There was at least one person working as an on-demand delivery boy through Postmates, but the rest of the early crowd was made up of food bloggers and tourists.

A pair that was visiting from Los Angeles, Samantha Duenas and Jason Stewart, got caught up in the early buzz. “We’re staying a few blocks away and I usually never do a line for food,” Stewart said. Duenas added, “We figured, we read about it, we’re a few blocks away, why don’t we jump in line for David Chang?” Amid the tourists and gourmands, there was a fair number of native New Yorkers in the crowd. Kelly Roman, who works at Wilhelmina Models, would normally “never” wait too long for a must-have treat—but she was making a special trip on behalf of her coworkers.

As it stands, the restaurant is only open from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday through Sunday. (This bit of exclusivity will surely only increase demand.) But, according to a Momofuku rep, there’s a possibility that the hours could change. Here’s hoping for some late-night fried chicken.

Like The Movement, A Black Woman’s Worth Is Stagnate…

LIKE THE MOVEMENT, A BLACK WOMAN’S WORTH IS STAGNATE, BUT IT’S ALL ABOUT THAT BASS

It started with Lauryn Hill turning 40.  I mean man, where has time flown since 1998 and Doo-Wop was that thing?  People say we as black women continue to make strides in the world, and I agree we do totally ROCK! We have a Black First Lady who has a mean style game and the intelligence that aligns, if not surpasses that of her European counterparts.  We have our young, gifted and Black millennial activists who keeps a strong Black woman in the forefront of the fight for social justice bringing attention to the issues and matters that matter to us! YES!

It would appear that in 2015 we are on the glory road of having our s**t together, so why is it “for all working-age Black women between the age of 18-64, the financial picture remains bleak with an average household wealth of $ 100?  Hispanic women come in slightly higher at $ 120.”  These numbers were first shared in 2010 via an article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, fast forward 5 years and absolutely nothing has changed.  Where is the movement moving us, and why is Hip-Hop being portrayed as the soundtrack of its non-existent growth?  It feels more like a bad scene from the Five Heartbeats than the beating hearts of a frustrated, fed-up, fight back mentality having BLACK PEOPLE.

When I put my red, black and green agenda down at any given moment you can catch me in some cut off shorts prancing around my house feeling myself in true Nicki and Queen B fashion due to my confidence and overwhelming need to represent for the strong black woman with a serious bit of sexy, but let me be honest in saying that behind those same closed doors I question just how much there is to feel when every day is a struggle just to be present, recognized, vindicated through my efforts, and truly just to live this life without drowning in all the odds that are stacked against me.   I wanna stop the world too B, or at the very least make a serious impact upon it and I need to know if that can happen with a wealth of less than $ 100.  I’m seriously doubting it.

Yes, I have a degree and yes it was supposed to catapult me to the forefront beyond those who chose not to participate in higher learning, but it appears that it is getting harder not easier to use that piece of paper to bring about a fulfillment through social change, while reaping a financial return to pay back the hefty loans that came with acquiring said degree.

So my questions are: where is the reward for the sacrifice, and when will my efforts and advancement not be contingent upon the very system that I’m fighting against?  Just because you lay a heavy beat on it and get some Pied Piper from the suburbs to present it to me in bogus deliverables and measurable that float in the cloud, doesn’t make it right, doable or justified and it definitely doesn’t change the dynamics of the community that most of the Black women, men and children I know reside in.  The movement isn’t a record deal and a record deal is NOT the path to FREEDOM for at least 98% of the working class black people I know in this struggle.  What the hell is everyone doing at SXSW??? Are they feeding people there?

My reality is that if I died today, degree clinched in my fist, arm extended and raised above my head as if I were screaming Black Power with my very last breath, I would still be worth less than $ 100.   So again I ask, “Where exactly is the movement moving us?”  I guess Lauryn was right.  Everything is everything; it’s just not the THING I was banking on.

Rick Ross Sends Floyd Mayweather $10K Worth Of Belaire

Rick Ross is going to miss this Saturday’s Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight. So to make up for it, Rozay sent Floyd Mayweather 200 bottles of Belaire.

Reports Page Six:

Mayweather’s buddy Rick Ross sent the boxer 200 bottles of bubbly — that’s more than $ 10,000 worth of booze — ahead of this weekend’s mega fight against Manny Pacquiao.

A source tells Page Six Ross had the Luc Belaire sparkling wine delivered to Mayweather’s Las Vegas home earlier this week for afterparty celebrations and to add to the 38-year-old’s home wine cellar.

Ross, who constantly shares photos of the brand via social media, has to miss the fight to perform at the Youth Hip Hop Festival in South Africa but went to Sin City last week to “watch Floyd train and show his support,” our source said.

Respect to Ross for keeping his tour date to support the kids (we’re sure the check was an incentive, too.)

Win or lose, the booze will surely be sipped on.

Because You’re Worth It

Gray hair used to be unfashionable and unforgiving; these days it’s sexy and a signature for many stars.

In case you didn’t get the memo, gray hair is hot. And sexy! Just check out the silver foxes on the red carpet — Diane Keaton, Jamie Lee Curtis and Helen Mirren. You’ll also see fabulous white-haired fashionistas strutting their stuff on Fifth Avenue with a bright splash of red lipstick and a devilish smile. But before you go au natural and kiss your colorist goodbye — or ask your colorist to even out the gray strands with a gray patina that looks au natural, there are some things to keep in mind.

When and why does hair to turn grey?

Hair turns grey because of loss of a pigment called melanin,” says Doris Day, MD, director of Day Dermatology and Aesthetics in Manhattan. “Your hair stops producing the melanin that creates its color. It is mostly due to genes, so if your mother or father had gray hair early, you most likely will too.” Melanin also gives your skin and eyes their color: Dark-skinned and dark-haired people have more melanin than light-skinned people, who may also be blonde due to the lesser amounts of melanin.

For most women, losing melanin can start at any time. Singer Emmy Lou Harris, 68, went gray in her 20s and dyed her hair until she was in her early 40s. When she stopped, her striking white hair, worn below her shoulders, became her trademark.

In the early stages, it’s tempting to dye gray hair to blend in with your natural color, especially if your natural shade is dark. If your hair is light brown or blonde, your stylist may recommend highlights and/or low lights rather than just one tone.

Another option is maintaining a gray or white streak at the temple, where loss of hair color usually starts, and keeping the rest of your hair its original shade. The effect can be dramatic. Think of Susan Sontag or singer Bonnie Raitt.

Brooklyn writer Yona Zeldis McDonough, author of six adult and 24 children’s novels, turned gray in her thirties. “It made me feel old at first,” she says. “Now, I feel it actually makes me seem more youthful.” The transition wasn’t easy. “My kids did not like the gray. Neither did my stylist,” says Zeldis, who wears her salt and pepper hair in a flirty fringed cap that calls to mind Jean Seaberg in Breathless. “If you go gray, you need a really good haircut. I go to Omni Salon in Park Slope.”

At one time, going gray meant going short. Now, anything goes. “Every cut works for gray or white hair,” says Marshall Lin, a stylist at Frederic Fekkai in New York.

If you have more contrast or shadows, then you can get a more layered cut to match your color. If you have less contrast and shadow, a classic, one-length bob style will show off the movement. However, in the end, it is all about your own individual style and personality.

French-born New Yorker Francoise Simon didn’t spot a gray hair on her dark chestnut mane until her mid to late 50s. “I have no misgivings about turning gray,” says Simon, a retired professor of French Literature at Queens College. “It never entered my mind to color my hair. It fits my persona and style. My stylist loves my hair the way it is or at least he pretends to very convincingly,” she says with typical French élan.

“Women with gray hair look authentic,” says jewelry designer Liz Friedman, who is routinely photographed on Fifth Avenue for her iconoclastic fashion sense by Mangue Banzima, founder of QuiStyle.com, a style and beauty blog. Friedman admits to coloring her hair until she was sixty. “I had dark brown hair which started to go gray in my 40s,” she says. “Now, anytime I feel the urge to color it, my stylist refuses to do it.”

Changes in texture

“Gray hair can be more wiry,” says Dr. Day. “It may feel drier because as you age your oil glands do not produce as much sebum.” And here’s the double whammy. When you turn gray, your hair usually becomes thinner. According to Dr. Day, one in three women experiences thinning hair.

The solution? Depending to what extent your hair has thinned, you may want to get an expert cut that makes it look fuller, add extensions or try a medical alternative. The LaserCap, which costs a pricey $ 3,000, uses specific wavelengths to produce very low heat to stimulate follicle growth. But there’s no guarantee it will produce results.

A more common choice is Women’s Rogaine, an over-the-counter product applied directly to the scalp. But a prescription is necessary for a product such as Formula 82M that is twice as strong as Rogaine.

A less traumatic approach is to make the most of what you’ve got. Stylist Marshall Lin recommends Clairol’s Shimmer Lights Shampoo. “It keeps gray and white hair shiny,” says Lin. You’ll also want to keep hair soft and silky by using conditioners. Not just after every shampoo, but a deep conditioner that you leave on for 10 to 20 minutes once a week.

For a glowing finish, try Moroccan Hair Oil or L’Oreal Total Repair 5 Multi-Restorative Dry Oil. Spray-on oils require just a quick spritz and won’t leave a sticky residue on your hands or clothes.

It’s not just what you put on your hair that matters. It’s also what you put in your mouth. “Food rich in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon and dark green vegetables produce sebum, the hair’s natural conditioner, says Dr. Day, who also suggests eating pomegranate, avocado, pumpkin and olive oil.

Makeup to Match

Whether you were a blond, brunette or redhead, when your hair goes gray it’s time to update your cosmetics. You’ll need to step up the brightness of your makeup to avoid looking washed out. When you go gray, eyebrows tend to go rogue. Have them professionally shaped and consult a cosmetician to find the right shade of eyebrow pencil to fill in the gaps. You may want to try one of the lighter shades of Maybelline Brow Drama, a mascara for your brows.

For eye shadow, stick to neutral shades of pearl, gray, taupe or charcoal to complement your hair. Add a bit of lip gloss — yes, lip gloss — on top of your eye shadow for extra oomph.

Along with thinning hair, eyelashes tend to thin out. Use a gray or charcoal eyeliner sparingly on upper and lower lids and finish with mascara on top lashes only. Always use a magnifying mirror when applying eyeliner. The result should be subtle, not obvious. (Cleopatra eyes are strictly for the under-40 set.)

If your eyelashes have all but vanished, try false eyelashes. To avoid the Tammy Faye Baker look, make sure you trim them to a natural length and shape. If you’re unsure how to go about it, ask for a demonstration the next time you’re in Sephora.

You may want to go a shade warmer in your foundation or blush. But keep it soft and natural. Use cream or liquid blush. Perricone MD’s No Blush Blush is a miracle in a bottle. Apply it over your regular moisturizer.

When it comes to your lips, throw that old pencil liner away and apply lipstick straight from the tube. “A red lip is so sexy with gray or white hair,” says Marshall Lin.

We agree!

Sarah Jessica Parker

Brooklyn sits at the nexus of nearly everything nowadays: Imaginative restaurants, smart boutiques, charming bars, and forward-thinking fitness studios have all found a foothold in New York’s insiders-only borough. In recent years, it has also given rise to a thriving beauty scene—one that has resulted in a wave of noteworthy new hair salons. Each of them will leave you looking better than when you left the city. Behold, Brooklyn’s six best salons.

‘World’s Most Extravangant Easter Bunny’ Is Worth $49K, Has Diamonds For Eyes

The company that first brought us the world’s most expensive gingerbread house, the most expensive Christmas pudding and a $ 100,000 Valentine’s Day dinner is now offering something egg-cellent for Easter.

Behold, a $ 49,000 Easter bunny outfitted with diamond eyes, because why not:

veryfirstto

The chocolate bunny was carved over a period of two days by Martin Chiffers, former chef décor of Harrods. Made of Tanzania origin chocolate, the bunny weighs 11 pounds and consists of a whopping 548,000 calories. Because as we all know, Easter needs more calories.

And more bling, apparently. According to VeryFirstTo’s press release, the bunny comes with three chocolate eggs decorated with gold leaf and two diamonds worth about $ 37,400.

Just in case this Easter treat is too much to eat in one weekend (or you want to show off your purchase for an extended amount of time), the bunny can be stored for up to two years, if properly frozen. An evil-looking Easter bunny that never goes away? Perfect.

No word yet on any bids for the bunny, though we don’t expect there to be many.

Four Bathroom Photos Tweeted Are Worth a Thousand Words

2015-03-18-1426648549-4788921-TransMan.png

It’s been a long time coming, but the LGBT community has finally made it clear, in stunning visual images, why the upsurge in extremist “bathroom bills” is absurd. While the focus of the legislation is, and always has been, on trans women in the women’s bathrooms, no attention has been paid to the flip side – trans men, assigned female at birth, being forced into the women’s bathrooms. While some cisgender women in those facilities may be uncomfortable with a woman they feel appears too masculine – and these at times include lesbian and straight cisgender women as well as transgender women – they need to grapple with these photos, since they are the inevitable consequence of the laws being considered.

The newest bathroom bills began in Canada, and have recently been taken up in (1) Texas which requires karyotyping (chromosome testing) at the bathroom door of a public accommodation and penalties for the owners and managers of said facilities, (2) Florida, with some mysterious test for “biological sex at birth” and similar penalties, both in public accommodations and workplaces, and (3) Kentucky, with similar restrictions in schools. Both Kentucky and Texas would offer significant cash bounties to snitches.

An upbeat assessment of this flurry of bathroom criminalization bills comes from my friend and colleague, Brynn Tannehill, writing in the Huffington Post, where she concludes:

These bathroom bills represent a futile and not particularly well-thought-out side show to where the real point of attack is. Their introduction may be simple grandstanding for the base, fear mongering or sincerely held paranoia, but as public accommodations access becomes settled law these bills will have less and less “pull.”

People whose greatest fears in life include transgender people in bathrooms will increasingly be seen for what they are, and the rest of us will be able to just get on with our lives.

Or, after some considered thought, might those same anxious women and their concerned men discover that this situation is just as absurd, and conclude that a woman is a woman is a woman?

11 Best-Selling Beauty Products That Are Worth the Investment

Best Beauty Products

In the world of makeup, universally flattering is a nearly impossible feat. Considering variations in complexion, facial features, and personal style, pleasing everyone is almost never in the cards. Which is why it’s so shocking when a beauty product manages to earn cult status, making itself irreplaceable in more makeup bags than not. Take Clé de Peau Beauté’s creamy, full-coverage concealer for example; it imperceptibly blends into the skin, won’t budge, and has practically become the crowd-sourced response to the question: “What is the best concealer?” MAC Ruby Woo may be the only shade of red lipstick one will ever need. And those looking to forge common ground with other women would do well to utter the phrase “Laura Mercier Tinted Primer.” It’s not just hype—there’s a reason one Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream sells every 30 seconds, and seven tubes of Maybelline Baby Lips balm sell every fifteen seconds: They’re really that good. Without further ado, here, eleven of the best-selling makeup products in existence.

Why an Unpaid Internship Was Worth 4,000 Miles and $3,000

You know those Hollywood types who fall into acting because of timing and luck? That’s kind of how I got into journalism. I had never considered it as a kid — I’d always worked on the school paper, and thought it would be cool to see my name in print, but had always considered myself a creative writer first. I applied to write for Her Campus Johns Hopkins, but because Her Campus National was looking for a JHU Campus Correspondent, I found myself building a chapter of the publication as a freshman. When it was time to apply for summer internships, I sent out 31 applications, but was at a disadvantage because I was an incoming sophomore, and most publications prefer to hire juniors or seniors.

Just when I thought I’d be tutoring SAT/ACT at my local library, I got an email from the copy chief of Sports Illustrated. He was impressed by my resume, and called me for an interview, where he hired me on the spot. At Sports Illustrated, I worked in the Copy department, so I was observing conferences, helping the copyeditors with filing, and learning how to copyedit. I spent my summer cross-referencing the Merrium-Webster’s 11th Edition with the Sports Illustrated Style Book, double-checking that the en dashes and em dashes were in the right places, and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. Looking back, I realize how wonderful that internship was — SI treated me like a member of the team, which is something very few interns can say.

At the end of the summer, I dreaded going back to Baltimore, simply because it wasn’t New York, which has an intoxicating quality when you’re young and ambitious. I didn’t want to stop working — so I found myself applying for fall internships and going on interviews during my lunch breaks at SI. I landed a gig at Elle, which I couldn’t turn down. To make it work, I changed my entire JHU schedule to fit a full course load on Monday and Tuesday, so I could get on an Amtrak to New York Wednesday morning and work Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10 am to 6 pm. My dad doesn’t believe in internships (he thinks companies take advantage of interns), but my mother was supportive because she’s always encouraged me to pursue unique experience.

The Elle internship was more traditional, despite my nontraditional approach to it — interview transcriptions, archival work, research for spreads, and yes, coffee runs and errands. It was a reality check, especially coming off the SI internship. The office was a totally different environment and the learning curve was steeper. I had less access to editors, less room for error, and more pressure. When my friends found out what I was commuting for, the responses were mixed; my favorite was, “That is both really fantastic and completely insane,” which it was. I was exhausted all the time, and slept on the train because I was doing my schoolwork in the middle of the night. I broke seven years of vegetarianism because I needed more protein, got hooked on caffeine, and caught walking pneumonia five weeks in. But I was also surrounded by people working in the pop journalism industry — there was talk in the cafeteria sushi line about the Rihanna cover and the Lorde interview. I got to observe a tabletop photo shoot, and learned how to style my collegiate wardrobe so it looked on-trend.

My life became a bizarre dichotomy of academia and pop culture — even though my homework focused on Frank O’Hara’s poetry and Hans Holbein’s paintings, I learned that Eva Chen (a Hopkins alum) and Lucky had spun off from Conde Nast, Joanna Coles was named Editorial Director of Seventeen, and Karl Lagerfeld designed for both Chanel and Fendi. Back at school, my priorities changed — I dropped out of clubs I’d loved freshman year, lost touch with acquaintances, and spent less time on schoolwork.

After 10 weeks, my Sports Illustrated money started to run out, and I needed to end the Elle internship because it was getting too expensive. Over those 10 weeks, I travelled 4,000 miles and spent $ 3,000 on an unpaid internship. I also discovered that the magazine industry is thrilling, but I’m still more passionate about the arts.

Before I started commuting between Baltimore and New York, my uncle told me not to do it. “You’ll miss out on the college thing. Go have fun.”

“This is my idea of fun,” I said. It was fun to step out of my comfort zone, because uncharted territory is exciting (and learning to walk in heels is an important life skill). It was fun to prove to myself how far I will go — 2,000 miles, apparently — to make it in a competitive industry. Suddenly, everything from creative writing to screenwriting to film production seemed within my reach. It was empowering to do something ridiculous.

The other day, a friend of mine, a Hopkins pre-med interested in switching to magazine journalism, asked if I’d recommend doing an internship. She said it was impossible to fit it into her pre-med track, but she’d hate herself if she didn’t give media a try.

“I’d say do it, even if it seems impossible,” I told her, “You might surprise yourself.”

Hilarious Engagement Photo Is Worth More Than a Thousand Words!

There is a family I know well, and there are four daughters, close in age and the best of friends. Now check out this hilarious photo they posted recently and then gave me permission to write about the back story, which explains the comedy of the photo.

2014-12-30-Laurenandsisters.jpg

Lauren, a popular disc jockey on a top 40 Houston station, is the oldest daughter and happily unmarried at age 32. She is the one on the right, drinking champagne. Her sisters from left to right are Melanie, Melissa, and Amy, all engaged or married. This was taken by Lauren’s father Mark during Lauren’s youngest sister Melanie’s engagement. One by one her younger sisters have all found Mr. Right and have gotten engaged or married.

As Lauren is acknowledging in the shot, she knows the barrage of well wishes for her sister will include many inquiries among Lauren’s relatives as to when she, as the oldest, is going to find the right one and settle down. “I’ve been asked so many times when is it going to be my turn, I’ve lost count,” Lauren says. It is questions like that make her want to drown them out in said champagne.

Yet, the photo is also about her genuine happiness for her sister and her way of toasting her sister’s engagement.

Most of all, it shows her terrific sense of humor. In fact she told her father that her birthday gift to him is his not having to pay for her wedding this year.

You could not find a more close-knit family than Lauren’s sisters, ranging in age from 32 to 26, and their parents. One of her sisters is Lauren’s roommate and another lives in the same apartment complex. Her other married sister Amy is just five minutes away, and Lauren visits daily to see her little nephew. The four girls socialize together, shop together, eat together, and there is hardly ever a time where you see one without the others.

It must also be noted that Lauren is completely happy, independent, and successful. So to me, this photo celebrates that very self-confident, content but single oldest sister, along with a wry nod to those inquiring minds who are in a hurry for her to get married.

Alamo Drafthouse In Dallas/Fort Worth To Show ‘Team America’ Instead Of ‘The Interview’

Sony may have pulled “The Interview” in wake of hacker threats, but at least one movie theater isn’t letting North Korea off the hook. The Alamo Drafthouse is planning to run “Team America: World Police” in its place at its Dallas/Forth Worth location.

We’re just trying to make the best of an unfortunate situation,” creative manager and programmer James Wallace of the Richardson, Tex., theater told The Hollywood Reporter.

The 2004 musical by “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone features an all-puppet cast, with a puppet version of North Korea’s then-dictator Kim Jong Il as its foul-mouthed main villain.

(NOTE: The clips in this piece, and some of the text below, contain NSFW language.)

On its website for the event, the Alamo Drafthouse is promising to turn the movie into both a singalong and a quote-a-long:

“We’ll have subtitles for all the songs and all of our favorite quotes, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to scream out ‘AMERICA! FUCK YEAH!’ at the top of your lungs. And yeah, we will have American flags, red white and blue streamers, balloons, and more for everyone. And THAT is how true American heroes will be celebrating this year, but if you want to let the terrorists win…well, that’s your prerogative.”

North Korea had no official reaction to “Team America,” at the time. Kim died in 2011, leaving his son — and “The Interview” target — Kim Jong Un in charge.

His regime has been angry over “The Interview” since Sony began promoting it earlier this year. The U.S. government has linked the Sony hack attack to Pyongyang.

The Dallas/Forth Worth Alamo Drafthouse in Richardson, Tex., will show “Team America: World Police” on Dec. 27 at 7 p.m.

Is the Dating Game Worth It? Is Anyone Winning?

Does anyone stay together anymore? A 51% divorce rate is just the norm these days, yet many are eager to jump into the next relationship at the drop of a hat. After one date we are changing our Facebook status and planning out our futures. Lifelong commitment nor serial monogamy seem to be working. We have a fear of commitment but fearlessly jump into every relationship without thinking clearly. Relationships, like jobs have changed tremendously in the past 50 years. It used to be that you find a good company and retire there. Today, jobs change every few years and relationships change even faster. Is there a winner here?
