What’s Wrong With Me?

“Doctor!” said the woman as she loudly bounced into the room, “I want you to tell me very frankly what’s wrong with me.”

He surveyed her from head to foot. “Madam,” he said at length, “I’ve just three things to tell you.”

“First, you need to lose at least twenty pounds. Second, you should use about half as much rouge and lipstick. And third, I’m an artist – the doctor’s
office is on the next floor.”

How to Apply Cologne the Right Way, Because You’re Doing it Wrong

A lot of men tend to treat cologne as an afterthought. It’s that thing you spray on as the punctuation on the end of getting ready for the day or night, right before you grab your keys and walk out the door. But it turns out that this is the worst possible time to apply on your cologne. In fact, you should be spraying it when you’re completely and totally buck naked.

You’re Probably Cleaning Your Ears Wrong

Like many guys, you’ve probably bought into the myth that ear wax is a sign of poor hygiene. It’s an understandable conclusion: Why would sticky little balls of goo in your ears be anything other than hazardous to your health? Except that it’s quite the opposite. Earwax, it turns out, protects and lubricates the canals, and has antimicrobial properties that defend against infection. In fact, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center found that cleaning your ears too often can lead to dryness and itchiness in the area.

Wrong Rescue

Standing at the edge of the lake, a man saw a woman flailing about in the deep water. Unable to swim, the man screamed for help. A trout fisherman ran
up. The man said, “My wife is drowning and I can’t swim. Please save her. I’ll give you a hundred dollars.”

The fisherman dove into the water. In ten powerful strokes, he reached the woman, put his arm around her, and swam back to shore. Depositing her at
the feet of the man, the fisherman said, “Okay, where’s my hundred dollars?”

The man said, “Look, when I saw her going down for the third time, I thought it was my wife. But this is my mother-in-law.”

The fisherman reached into his pocket and said, “Just my luck. How much do I owe you?”

News in Brief: Quantum Political Scientists Hypothesize Country Headed In Both Right And Wrong Directions Simultaneously

PASADENA, CA—Upending the conventionally held assumption that the United States must exclusively be moving along a single good or bad path forward, quantum political scientists at the California Institute of Technology published a paper Thursday hypothesizing that the country is, in fact, headed in both the right and wrong directions simultaneously. “Rather than inhabiting a single reality where the nation’s future looks bright or an opposite one where Americans are struggling like never before, our research suggests that these two conditions actually exist concurrently in a state of superposition,” said lead researcher David Rimbaud, adding that, according to their analysis of quantum wave function and Gallup polls, the nation’s best days were found to lie, paradoxically, both ahead of and behind it. “In addition, our research has revealed for the first time that this country is currently changing beyond all recognition while at the same time remaining …

Jake Johnson on His New Movie and Where New Girl Went Wrong

jake johnson digging for fire

If it seems like a curious move for the hapless, lovable Jake Johnson and mumblecore-extraordinaire Joe Swanberg to write a movie about searching for a dead body, you’d be right, but you haven’t heard the whole story. The premise for their newest film, Digging for Fire, actually begins very much in reality—right in Johnson’s own backyard. “What really happened was I was digging in the backyard with my wife and I found a rusted gun, bones, and license plate,” Johnson said. “Now, it very well could have been animal bones and a kid’s gun that got rusted, but for the sake of mystery, I got excited about it.” Johnson corralled a bunch of friends and hosted a 10-day backyard excavation, but no skeleton was unearthed.

The fiction of Digging for Fire will probably strike viewers as a lot more familiar. Swanberg assembled most of the cast from 2013’s Drinking Buddies (Johnson, Ron Livingston, and his movie muse Anna Kendrick) then added more star power (Orlando Bloom, Mike Birbiglia, Brie Larson, to name a few). Johnson plays a husband struggling to get it together. After his wife, played by Rosemarie DeWitt, packs up their toddler (starring Swanberg’s adorable son, Jude) and leaves him for a weekend with a tablefull of undone taxes, both spouses go on a lo-fi self-discovery journey. While the somewhat grim outlook on long-term relationships is characteristic of Swanberg’s oeuvre, Johnson was less interested in that. “I was really excited about the dead body—to be a twelve-year-old about this movie,” Johnson said. “I wasn’t there when they were shooting the Rosemarie DeWitt stuff, so a lot of that was more open-ended. For me, it was just about the dead body.” Here, more from Johnson about Digging for Fire, Chris Messina going full frontal, and where New Girl went wrong.

Why did you opt for a short outline instead of a traditional script?
We had an outline so that we were able to pitch people, which had a beginning, middle, and end. With every actor coming in, we wanted them to bring their own brain and their own creativity. We know what needs to happen in a scene, but Joe, as a director, doesn’t really care how you get there, as long as it’s good. His theory is: Get good people and good things will happen.

You’ve obviously worked with Joe Swanberg and a number of the people in this movie. Is the casting process now like inviting a few friends over?
Yes, this one was. We connect this movie with Drinking Buddies. We knew people who liked Drinking Buddies and so we just reached out to them, or they had expressed that they liked it. They were interested in the world. So we said, “We’re making this one, do you want to come jump on?”

How did Orlando Bloom get involved? Because he seems like—
An outsider. That was through the agents. He’s my surprise pick because I think he’s great in the movie. He’s the guy you don’t expect in this thing, but he brought a lot to it. A lot of his character, and what makes his character interesting, he wrote. He wanted to have a motorcycle; he wanted to get into a fight. And Joe loved all of it.

What about Chris Messina’s full frontal? Was that a conversation?
When we asked Chris to be in the movie, what we said was his character needed to add an element of danger to the movie, [like] this night is getting more out of control than my character is kind of ready to deal with. And so Chris was, like, “Well, we could be blowing coke and screaming and getting drunk.” And then he goes, “I should just whip my dick out and get in the pool.” And Joe and I laughed, and then on set, he whipped his dick out and got in the pool.

Do you prefer improv to scripted TV?
Well, in scripted TV we improvise a lot, too. I like having a good script, but I like being able to have some freedom with it. So I’m one of those in-betweeners. I’m not necessarily looking to do heavy drama that is word-perfect. I like good writing, but I like being able to be in the moment and have good things happen.

New Girl kind of turned a corner at the end of season four. How have you felt about Nick and Jess’s ups and downs over the course of the series?
Zooey [Deschanel] and I knew it wasn’t working when Nick and Jess were together because there was so much fighting and they were always standing across from each other in some absurd argument. And we were, like, this is kind of spoiling something that’s nice between these two characters. I think the writers saw that, too, and I think we’re all relieved that they’re back to being friends. There might be some tension, but they’re friends.

When you would get a script that had Nick and Jess doing something you didn’t necessarily agree with, was it like getting a mandate from the boss?
Yes. We would see a scene and it would be like, “All right, I guess Nick and Jess are doing this?” And we would talk and sometimes we would say, “That’s great!” And other times, we’d be, like, “Why are they doing this?” But at the end of the day, you’re not being paid as a writer. I’m an actor. What they’re going to write for you is what you’re going to do. So if you like it or not, it really doesn’t matter. I don’t mean that in a mean way, but that’s partly what it is to be on a TV show.

How are you feeling about the fifth season of New Girl?
I’m excited. When people ask “What do you want to happen?” I’m like, “I don’t care.” I like playing Nick. I think he’s a really fun character. I will be really sad when I won’t get to play him anymore. I know all the characters. We know all our tones, our comedic rhythms. I like when the [show’s] funny. I don’t necessarily love the melodrama of television at times. I like when there’s just like really good comedic situations. When we’re in an emotional fight on television, I’m, like, “What?”

This interview has been edited and condensed.

Drake/Meek Mill feud: What’s wrong with celeb beef culture

“Calling all Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift fans: Shots have been fired, this is not a drill.” That’s pretty much been the reaction of the Internet this week, after Cyrus gave an interview with Marie Claire, in which she called out Swift and the hypocrisy of the music industry’s sex/violence paradigm, as illustrated in her “Bad Blood” video. “I don't get the violence revenge thing,” declared Cyrus. “That's supposed to be a good example? And I'm a bad role model because I'm running around with my titties out? I'm not sure how titties are worse than guns.” YouTube: Taylor Swift – Bad Blood ft. Kendrick Lamar Cyrus has a point: The double-standard between sex and violence in American pop culture has been well-chronicled. But her invocation of Swift to make her point is still frustrating, because it feels like the beginning of just another celebrity feud. In music today, celebrity feud culture has somehow overtaken the industry, tearing down artists and distracting us from their work. This isn’t exactly a surprising turn of events. Best friend-collector that she is, Swift has been involved in a rather high amount of disagreements lately. Things bubbled over in last month’s Nicki Minajincident, wherein Minaj expressed her distaste with the lack of black women nominated at the MTVVMAs. Swift, apparently seeing this as a personal attack on her, responded indignantly. She eventually apologized, and it’s been radio silence between the two ever since. But not before Katy Perry, widely acknowledged as the target of “Bad Blood,” threw some not so subtle shade at Swift on Twitter. Finding it ironic to parade the pit women against other women argument about as one unmeasurably capitalizes on the take down of a woman…— KATY PERRY (@katyperry) July 22, 2015The feud didn’t stop there, amidst rumors that Rihanna was preparing a T-Swift diss track of her own. Even Canadian pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen was briefly thrown into the fray, when fans freaked out over the release of her single “Warm Blood,” and began contrasting it with Swift’s aforementioned anthem. As the Daily Dot’s own Alexandra Samuels notes, labeling the exchange as a “feud” isn’t necessarily fair, because it suggests that women like Minaj and Swift are not capable having a rational discussion about the state of entertainment. “The media's tendency to reduce serious arguments between women to petty quarrels is problematic, because it casts aside women like Minaj as ‘haters,’ rather than as creative minds who are also cultural influencers,” she writes. There is an intelligent debate to be had regarding representation in the music industry, and Minaj and Swift gave us a chance to have it. But in painting it as nothing but a “cat fight,” the message got lost on the Internet. @taylorswift13@NICKIMINAJ I was enjoying the cat fight! 🙀😿— Shanjid Alam Violet (@ShanjidAlam) July 24, 2015However, men aren’t any less susceptible to music’s celebrity feud machine, as evidenced by the recent back and forth between hip-hop artists Drake and Meek Mill. After Meek Mill took to Twitter to call out the Canadian rapper for using a ghostwriter on his contribution to Meek’s recent album, fireworks went off. What commenced was an exchange of diss tracks and tweets. This led to Drake’s seemingly triumphant performance at OVO fest in Toronto, where the crowd reveled as he took to the stage and projected a series of memes making fun of his aggressor. In painting it as nothing but a “cat fight,” the message got lost on the Internet. Feuds, or “beefs,” as the genre would oft describe them, are a tricky subject in hip-hop, because they are a major part of its history. In the past, feuds have elevated all parties involved to reach new creative heights. Look at the feud between Big Daddy Kane and Rakim, two hip-hop pioneers who exchanged subtle disses for years, determined to prove not just to each other that they were the best—but to themselves. But hip-hop’s most famous feud, the east coast/west coast dispute between Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G., ended up with blood being spilled on both sides: Shakur was shot dead in 1996, and Biggie was gunned down less than a year later. So without a doubt, competition in hip-hop is a mixed bag. In between his dual masterpieces Good Kid, M.A.A.D City and To Pimp A Butterfly, there was hardly a more exciting moment for hip-hop in 2013 than when Kendrick Lamar famously called out all his major rap peers on Big Sean’s “Control,”—including Big Sean himself. And when beef began to brew between Lamar and Drake that same year, it appeared as if everyone was going to emerge a winner. Here were two artists at the peak of their powers, each striving to be at the top of their game.YouTube: Big Sean – Control f. Kendrick Lamar & Jay ElectronicaThe Meek Mill/Drake feud, on the other hand, turned into something completely different. Regardless of whether Meek’s allegations against Drake were true, they were complicated by the fact that he was dating Drake’s labelmate, Nicki Minaj. And given that Drake was the more famous rapper, Mill received much harsher treatment from the media—and from the Internet, in particular. While the memes making fun of him started out as lighthearted and kind of funny, they quickly turned ugly on multiple levels. Pitchfork’s Meaghan Garvey asserts, “There was a distinct moment during the OVO Fest set where things immediately flipped from corny but ultimately harmless to legitimately toxic: an unfunny, badly-edited image of a bride and groom, with Nicki’s head edited onto the man and Meek’s onto the woman.” YouTube: Drake Performs "Back To Back" At OVO Fest 2015 (Meek Mill Diss)The feud was no longer about a competition to determine who was the better rapper—it was about sexism, masculinity, and the media’s unquenchable thirst for blood, the desire to see one person crowned a victor, standing over the carcass of the other’s career. Neither party came off looking great, and Drake especially did damage to his reputation as a sensitive and thoughtful rapper, all in some arbitrary struggle to win the Internet. While the memes making fun of him started out as lighthearted and kind of funny, they quickly turned ugly on multiple levels. The most fundamentally frustrating thing about celebrity feuds between musicians is that they distract us from the actual music. It has become impossible to talk about about popular artists without also discussing their personal lives. While an artist’s personal life can occasionally inform how we think about their music, it shouldn’t define it. Take Kanye West, for example. No matter how many awards and prizes he receive and how matter how much acclaim he accrues, there are some who will always see him as Kim Kardashian’s asshole husband. That’s what the resistance to having him play at the Glastonbury Festival and Toronto's Pan American Games was really about—not being able to see past the celebrity to the talent. The worst of all possible outcomes manifests in the trend of music journalism being covered like “lifestyle reporting,” as was first highlighted in Ted Gioia’s now infamous op-ed piece for the Daily Beast. I’ve just spent a very depressing afternoon looking through the leading music periodicals. And what did I learn? Pretty much what I expected. I found out what the chart-topping musicians are wearing (or, in many instances, not wearing). I got updates on their love life and learned whose marriages are on the rocks. I read updates on the legal proceedings of the rich and famous. I got insights into the food preferences and travel routines of megastars. Gioia can’t help but come off as a kind of cranky old man here. But while he’d be wrong to buy into the idea that pop music is worse today than ever before (a frequent trope in cranky, old man thinking), he’s correct in his observation that now more than ever before, we’re more focused on the artists than we are on their art. The trade-off is that on the Internet, we have more ways to feel connected to our favorite musicians, but we’re also inundated with invitations to stare one-sidedly into their personal lives, criticizing their every move from afar. When we follow artists on Instagram and Twitter, we think we get a sense of who they really are. But we forget that the best way to get a sense of who an artist is comes from listening to their music. Music has not gotten substantially worse in recent years, but music feuds have. And this is not good. It’s not good for women, it’s not good for men, and it’s not good for music in general. But most of all, it’s not good for us, the listeners.Chris Osterndorf is a freelance journalist whose work has appeared on websites such as Mic, Salon, xoJane, the Week, and more. Bill Cosby Covers New York Mag & New York Daily News For All The Wrong Reasons [Photos]

Bill Cosby‘s week is off to an epically terrible start. New York magazine featured 35 of the comedian and accused rapist’s alleged victims in its latest issue and the New York Daily News threw salt on the wound by making him a cover star, too.

The New York mag piece and its provocative cover is sure to be trending all day as 35 women shared their stories about being victimized by the man we all knew as Cliff Huxtable, but is now known as “Pill Cosby.”

The New York Daily News highlighted the story, along with the headline “America’s Rapist.”

Is part of the pile on because Cosby was once one of the most well regarded Black men in America? That could be part of it. However, before you go trying to defend the indefensible, check out his deposition where he admits to drugging women.

If this isn’t the final nail in the coffin of Cosby’s wrecked legacy…

Check out the covers on the flip.

News in Brief: Father Apologizes For Taking Out Anger On Wrong Son

ELIZABETH, NJ—Moments after losing his composure with an unwarranted emotional outburst, local father David Kessler reportedly apologized to his son Christopher Thursday for erroneously taking out his anger on him and not his older brother Peter. “I’m really sorry I snapped at you earlier, Chris—you aren’t the one who deserves it,” said Kessler, admitting he overreacted by losing his temper and berating the 16-year-old instead of his lazy and useless elder sibling. “I was totally out of line when I was screaming at someone other than Peter. There’s really no excuse for me to treat anyone except for your good-for-nothing brother that way. I promise it will never happen again.” Following the apology to his youngest son, sources confirmed that a sentimental Kessler told his assembled family members he was very proud of all but one of them.

9 Reasons Why Arnold Schwarzenegger Has Couples Therapy All Wrong

In a recent Howard Stern interview, Arnold Schwarzenegger stated that going to couples therapy at the end of his marriage was, “the biggest mistake I ever made.” He went on to bluntly disparage the therapist and to call his efforts to help the couple “nonsense talk.”

I can’t dispute Mr. S’ experience in his particular therapy sessions, with that particular therapist, and with his particularly hurt and horrified wife who had recently learned that her husband had fathered a son several years prior with one of their household employees.

As we already know, Schwarzenegger and his wife, Maria Shriver, ended their marriage presumably because of this revelation. So, in other words — and to extrapolate on what Mr. S has already said — the couples therapy was deemed useless because the marriage didn’t remain intact.

But that’s not how it works, people. Couples therapy can help those in flailing marriages. It can help get couples back on track. It can help salvage marriages on the brink of divorce. It can also help end marriages that have no business staying put.

Here’s a realistic look (from a couples therapist) at what you can expect (and not) from couples therapy:

1. It can’t save your marriage. Only the two people in a marriage can do that. If a couples therapist tells you he or she is going to save your union, run in the other direction. This is snake oil, folks. And its purveyors prey on those desperate enough to believe it.

2. It isn’t a perfect system. Each and every couple needs something different — that’s obvious. No two marriages are alike and what derails a marriage is unique in circumstances and details. Couples therapists — good ones — work hard to meet each couple where they are. Then the therapist does his/her best to tailor the therapy accordingly. There isn’t one technique that works for every couple and what may help one couple heal may be another’s Achilles’ heel.

3. It can’t change your partner’s mind. No therapist in the world is going to be able to change the mind of someone hellbent on leaving his or her marriage. Face it, by the time some couples actually get to therapy, their marriage is a hot mess. A couples therapist can certainly outline the positive aspects of remaining married — and encourage clients to give theirs a fair shake — but magicians we are not.

4. It can help you communicate more effectively. I argue this is the one and only thing you can truly expect from good couples therapy. A therapist who will listen to the way two partners communicate and make suggestions for more empathic discourse. Couples lose their way when the communication channels start to break down. Couples therapy can help turn that around.

5. It can’t guarantee a desired outcome. Couples therapists can only work with what a couple brings to their therapy sessions. If both partners are ready, willing and able to make significant changes, the couples therapy can help with that. There is no right or wrong outcome when it comes to couples work. And the only truly reliable outcome is the one both partners co-create.

6. It can help you understand your partner’s behaviors. Throwing in the towel because you simply can’t understand where your partner is coming from? If partners can’t explain what’s happening for them in the marriage — either because they don’t know or they can’t express it effectively — couples counseling can shed light on behavioral patterns and systems that may be damaging the marriage.

7. It can put you in the hot seat. My guess is that Arnold figured this one out pretty quickly. Although there’s rarely one “bad guy,” there are sometimes extreme circumstances that act as the low-hanging fruit in a collapsing marriage. Arnold’s behaviors in the marriage certainly gave the therapy a running start. My guess is there were some really, really uncomfortable moments for him in those sessions.

8. It can be confusing. Sometimes couples leave sessions feeling worse than when they went in. And there are reasons for that. For one thing, you’re basically dredging up a lot of discontent. One partner has his list of woes, the other has her list of complaints. It’s the therapist’s job to honor both partners’ experiences in the marriage while guiding the couple toward reason — and understanding of the other’s perspective.

9. It can be worth a shot. Divorce ain’t easy for anyone involved. Even if you want a divorce, better to really investigate your role in the unhappiness in the marriage before you pull the trigger on dismantling your whole life. If there are children involved, even more reason to drag thyself to therapy. If you do decide to divorce, you’ll want to be able to tell your kids you tried everything to hold the family together. And that, for better or worse, includes couples therapy.

AIDS Messes With the Wrong Engineer

What do you do if both of your parents die of AIDS?

You mourn, obviously. And you wonder why the universe singled you out for such harsh treatment. Maybe you get mad. There isn’t much else you can do.

Unless you’re an engineer. Then you change the world. Because you can.

But you might need another engineer to help. Changing the world often takes at least two engineers.

Christopher Alegeka (BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering from Berkeley) is taking a big swing at AIDS, with co-founder and CEO Anwaar Al-Zireeni (BS, and a MEng in Bioengineering from Berkeley). Al-Zireeni invented the technology (patent pending) for an inexpensive AIDS testing device that could be a serious game-changer.

See Tamra Teig’s blog post here for more about the device and the company.

The start-up’s modest claim is that their simple, portable device can test for AIDS as easily as a home pregnancy test. That’s a big deal when more than half of the people with HIV in third-world locations don’t know they have it. And it also makes a huge difference if you start treating the virus as soon as you detect it. That can be a life-and-death difference in timing.

Third-world countries generally have poor medical facilities, or none nearby, so traditional tests for HIV are impractical and expensive in the places where it is needed most. This new testing device could get the cost per test under $ 10. And that is almost the same as putting a price tag on the end of the AIDS. (Isn’t it?)

Testing has limitations, obviously. No matter how easy it is to test, there will always be personal and social reasons to avoid doing so. But I wonder how many of those obstacles melt away when the device is easy to use, readily available, completely private, and funded by someone else (such as a government or Bill Gates).

By analogy, lots of folks do home pregnancy tests but far fewer would book a doctor’s appointment every time they needed to check.

The two engineers in my story formed a company called Privail. They hope to start testing their device where it is needed most, in sub-Saharan Africa, in 2016.

What did you do today? It was probably less awesome than that.

Disclosure: I have no investment in Privail (as of this writing) but I am active in the Berkeley start-up community as an alum. Assume I am biased for Berkeley-related start-ups.

I don’t give investment advice, and you should never take advice from cartoonists on anything important. But as a statement of fact, Privail is looking for seed funding. I don’t know enough about the company to have an opinion on their odds of success.

My Husband Was Living in the Wrong Body

My husband has felt like he was living in the wrong body for as long as he can remember. As a little boy, he always wanted to be a girl. He wanted to wear girls’ clothes and have long hair that could be styled in curls and pinned back with pink plastic barrettes. He wanted to roll strawberry lip gloss onto his lips. He wanted to be pretty.

My husband mustered up the courage to share this innermost part of himself with me back in 1984, one year after we got married. As a young bride, I was confused and did not understand what was wrong with him. I was angry and hurt that he would have such desires. I hoped he wasn’t a sexual deviant. I wondered why being married to me and starting a new life wasn’t enough for him. I simply did not know about a condition known as gender dysphoria. My husband was at odds with his birth gender. At the time, we had no resources. There was no Internet to turn to. His secret had become ours, and we continued wrestling with his unexplained desire to dress as a woman, a need so great it was unstoppable.

Our marriage became one that had two stories. One story was the story of success shown to the outside world — the story that unfolds with two beautiful sons, accomplished careers, vacations, cars and the house on the hill. And then there is the other story, a private tale of confusion, hurt feelings and resentment. There are chapters of our marriage when my husband’s desire to cross-dress was too great not to act out on, followed by dark periods of depression for having to live a life that felt wrong; times when I was threatened as a wife by the woman inside of my husband; moments when I was angry at this inner woman that dwelled within him, and lashed out at him because I didn’t know how to get to her. We had a story that was kept private, unable to share with the outside world.

2015-06-18-1434658725-6919970-ScreenShot20150618at4.16.13PM.png

After 25 years of marriage, our two stories had become blurry and it had become emotionally draining to keep the narratives defined. Our worlds were changing, and more information regarding gender dysphoria and transgender individuals had become available. I was able to understand better that there was nothing wrong with me, or with us. The only thing wrong was that my husband strongly felt he was a woman, and that fact was slowly destroying his spirit. The need to be a woman had become too great.

Together, we decided to rewrite our marriage and to live one true story. We agreed that my husband would transition fully into a woman. In the last three years, the husband that I married revolved into a woman with the use of hormones and surgery. It has been a whirlwind of couples therapy, legal papers and name changes. There have been many conversations with friends, coworkers and family members, both positive and negative. It has been a time of many changes.

My life as the wife of a transgender person is a roller coaster. There are many ups and downs, yet not once have I felt like I want to get off this ride. I am still in love with the person I married back in 1984. A person who today is a she. She has transitioned successfully into a woman both physically and emotionally. Most importantly, she is who she is today, and because of that, I have witnessed true joy in the person I’ve grown a life with — a person whose blue eyes shine because she feels right in her own skin.

Our story is still being written, and is far from over. This essay is just a blurb to the deeper story. There are more words to come. Words of how I feel as the wife. Words of love and acceptance as well as words of complicated grief while I stood by the person I married and wanted more than anything to have this story finish with a happy ending. Words I will write that will continue to tell our story, our one true story, for the world to see.

The Wrong Girl

Book 1 of the 1st Freak House Trilogy

C.J. Archer

Genre: Paranormal

Publish Date: May 31, 2013

Publisher: C.J. Archer

Seller: Carolyn Comito

NOTE: This ebook is included in a 3-book bundle with the other books in the trilogy. REVIEWS: "This is one of my favourite books I’ve read this year… I can’t praise it enough… The real stand out for this was the writing and the character voice." ~ The Moonlight Library "The writing in The Wrong Girl was beautiful. There were so many quotes that I wanted to write down, and keep… The world building, and the plot drew me in from the get go, and didn’t falter until the last sentence." ~ Books For A Delicate Eternity "This was one fantastic read! A really fascinating story which I couldn't put down, so this is easily a 5 stars." ~ Tea Party Princess DESCRIPTION: It's customary for Gothic romance novels to include a mysterious girl locked in the attic. Hannah Smith just wishes she wasn't that girl. As a narcoleptic and the companion to an earl's daughter with a strange affliction of her own, Hannah knows she's lucky to have a roof over her head and food in her belly when so many orphans starve on the streets. Yet freedom is something Hannah longs for. She did not, however, want her freedom to arrive in the form of kidnapping. Taken by handsome Jack Langley to a place known as Freak House, she finds herself under the same roof as a mad scientist, his niece, a mute servant and Jack, a fire starter with a mysterious past. They assure Hannah she is not a prisoner and that they want to help her. The problem is, they think she's the earl's daughter. What will they do when they discover they took the wrong girl? A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: When I set out to write the Freak House series, I wanted to put my own spin on the Gothic novels of the Victorian era. I've always loved their creepiness, the secrets, and the romance too, but I wanted to see the story from the perspective of the character that is often present but never the heroine – the girl kept in the attic. I hope you'll enjoy this trilogy as much as I enjoyed writing it. ~CJ

Why North Carolina’s Unprecedented Exemption Is Wrong For America

(RNS) This week, North Carolina’s legislature overrode its Republican governor’s veto to allow magistrates and clerks to refuse to perform same-sex marriages.

This unprecedented move — never before have state employees been allowed to simply stop doing their jobs — comes at a time of profound debate regarding same-sex marriage. It is exactly the wrong move.

To be sure, same-sex marriage is a contentious moral and political issue. National support for marriage equality is now at 63 percent, but that means 37 percent still have doubts. And while some of that 37 percent may be bigoted or homophobic, a significant portion has sincere religious objections. As same-sex marriage may soon be the law of the land, why not accommodate those sincere believers wherever possible, so that they can enjoy their right to religious liberty?

There are two important reasons why.

First no constitutional right exists in a vacuum. Rather, rights exist in balance with other rights and other interests.

Sometimes, those interests may be easy to set aside. In the 1990s, when a group of Native Americans were held to have violated drug laws because they used peyote in a sacramental ritual, Congress nearly unanimously passed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act to protect them. In this case, the competing interest was trivial (anti-drug laws were not meant to target religious ritual), no one else was harmed, and Congress took action.

Other times, however, the competing interests are profound. In the 1960s, many business owners sincerely believed that whites and blacks should not marry one another, mix with one another, or even sit with one another in restaurants. Like today, some of these people were simply racist. Some, however, had sincere religious objections, and plenty of unambiguous Scripture to back them up.

What should courts and legislatures have done? Should they have accommodated those religious objections, passing civil rights laws but exempting those with religious beliefs?

Imagine what that would have looked like: separate lunch counters, segregated schools, and all-white neighborhoods. The exemption would have eaten the civil right itself. “Separate but equal” would have endured.

Flash forward to today. Citing religious freedom, laws have been passed that allow private businesses to turn away gay customers, state-licensed adoption agencies to turn away gay families, and now state employees to turn away gay people who seek to legally marry. Is this real equality? Or is it something less than equality, in which case the exemption has overwhelmed the civil right itself?

Some would say that LGBT people can simply find another magistrate to marry them; indeed, the North Carolina law requires that one be made available. This does mitigate some of the harm.

But there might be other restaurants down the street, too. Does that make it okay for one to say, “no blacks allowed”?

Of course not. Even when alternative remedies are available, the public refusal violates the right to equal protection under the laws, as interpreted by the Civil Rights Act.

And while African-Americans and LGBT people have very different histories and cultural positions, the offense caused by “no gays allowed” is basically the same.

But what about that magistrate, forced to perform a marriage he or she finds religiously forbidden? Doesn’t she have rights too?

Yes — and this brings me to my second main point. In a democracy, civil marriage is not a religious issue.

To be clear, no one is saying religious institutions should have to accept, host, or bless gay unions, or any other marriage they may find objectionable.

For example, the synagogue I grew up in refused to perform interfaith weddings. Does that violate the civil rights of the couple wishing to be married? Well, it does affect them, but the couple’s right to get married wherever they want is trumped by the synagogue members’ rights to freely exercise their religion.

What goes on among religious people, and in religious spaces, is constitutionally as well as theologically sacred.

But the courthouse is not a religious space, and the magistrate is not acting in a religious capacity. She is doing her job, which she took an oath to do.

In fact, by obeying the law, she is following Jesus’ commandment to “render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s, and render unto God what is God’s.”

Same-sex marriage is only one of many marriages that some clerks may find objectionable. Suppose two divorced people marry one another. Some Catholics may believe that to be against God’s law. But a Catholic magistrate is not a Catholic priest. He’s not performing the sacrament of marriage. He’s acting under secular, state law.

Or suppose a 17-year-old girl marries a 60-year-old man. Some may find that religiously or morally problematic, but the state of North Carolina allows it.

Or suppose a black man marries a white woman — illegal in North Carolina until 1967, when the Supreme Court ruled such laws unconstitutional. Was that ruling incorrect? Should marriage clerks with sincere religious objections have been able to opt out?

This is why North Carolina’s governor, Pat McCrory, vetoed the bill. Not because he endorses same-sex marriage — he doesn’t. But because confusing civil and religious marriage undermines the rule of law.

Here’s what a believing magistrate in North Carolina should do when that gay couple approaches her window. She should understand that she is not wedding two people before God, but validating their legal marriage under the laws of the United States. She should feel blessed to be able to do so. And she should thank God that in our country, the two are not confused with one another.

6 Reasons Marrying Mr. Wrong Was The Absolute Right Decision

By Lynne Meredith Golodner for YourTango

“Don’t get divorced if you think you’re just going to go out and find the right person to marry,” my mother said to me on a cold, white Michigan afternoon many years ago. I was sitting in my tiny master bathroom, the door shut as I whispered into the phone and my two toddlers played downstairs while the baby slept.

“You may never find Mr. Right,” my mother said. “Only get divorced if you would rather be alone the rest of your life than be with this person.”

At the moment that she said it, I felt the words were harsh and cruel.

But it didn’t take long for me to see the truth in my mother’s words — and be grateful for them. It took six more months before I got to the point of truly preferring a life spent alone than one shared with my husband at the time, and I took the courageous step to file for divorce.

In 2006, I wrote an article about how Orthodox sex was so hot. Despite the fact that two years later my Orthodox marriage crashed and burned, I don’t regret writing that piece. In fact, I’m pretty proud of it for more reasons than you might think. (Even though the marriage ended, we did have hot sex at times. There is always good amid the bad, and we had eight years with pockets of pretty damn good.)

Once a person divorces, it would be easy to say, “I never should have married that person in the first place.”

We always want to avoid the hurt, anger and sense of loss. But I’m really glad I married my ex because I wouldn’t be the person I am today if I hadn’t.

Sometimes, it’s a good thing to marry Mr. Wrong — because it leads you to Ms. Right, a.k.a. yourself.

Over the eight years of my first marriage, I spent many late, lonely nights on the phone with a grad school friend who lived in Wyoming, turning over the details of my unhappy marriage. (His soothing voice calmed my nerves and made me feel less alone, like I was worth loving.)

During that marriage, I awoke from infrequent dreams about my college boyfriend, wondering where he was and if I would have been happier with him. (I wouldn’t have.)

Marrying the wrong guy gave me six great life lessons that forever changed me, and for that I will be eternally grateful to my ex-husband:

1. He’s the reason I have the best three children in the world.

I know every mother says that, but truly I feel lucky to be their mother. It is said that the child chooses the parents and if that’s true, I am really glad my three chose me. They are smart, sweet, outspoken, unique and full of love. I don’t know what my life would be like without them.

Being their mother makes me more patient, more kind, more caring, and it gives my life focus and meaning beyond work. I often ask myself what the purpose of our lives is, and when I look at my three children, I begin to understand. We are here on this planet to leave a legacy, to make the world a better place, to contribute to community. We are not here for ourselves. And being a mother has broadened my sense of purpose and motivation as well as expanded my ability to love.

2. He helped me stand on my two feet.

Before I married my ex, I was needy and insecure, seeking love and acceptance anywhere I could find it. This led me to date a lot of guys in high school and college, miss opportunities to broaden my own horizons, travel and try new things while I focused agonizingly on relationships and clung to people I thought might complete me. It wasn’t a pretty picture.

He made me realize that being with another person can’t erase the loneliness inside. Only I could do that. I had to bravely look at myself in the mirror and face the fact that even legally bound to another person, I was inherently alone — and then slowly eliminate my fear of that. I like myself now, and I like my time alone. I am not afraid of it. Secondly, being married to my ex and having three kids in four years forced me to stand up and take charge. He wasn’t around a lot, so I had to run the show. I couldn’t cling; he wasn’t there to let me. I had to shake off the malaise of the person I used to be and evolve into the person I always wanted to be.

3. He allowed me to confront what I truly wanted out of life.

When I decided to divorce, the economy was tanking and my kids were not quite 2, 4 and 6. Since my ex is a musician, I needed a secure income stream to support my kiddos. So I created a business, which has grown and thrived more than I ever could have hoped. If I hadn’t spread my wings and asked myself what I truly wanted out of life, I wouldn’t own a successful public relations company, be the author of eight books and speak nationally about the power of story and relationships.

You change one thing in your life (like leaving a marriage) and you realize anything is possible if you just take the first step. So you change a lot more and blossom.

4. He taught me that some relationships are just not meant to be.

Marrying the wrong guy taught me that no matter how hard you try (and we did, trust me), some relationships are just not meant to be. I gained clarity and wisdom through my former marriage, so that when I met my current husband, I had open eyes.

I looked for his flaws and oddities, and asked myself if I could live with them. I knew before I married him that I didn’t like the way he fought and so we knew we had to work together to communicate. I know that I don’t like that about him, but I like enough — and I knew all this before I walked into a commitment so there are no surprises. That makes this relationship easier. And on that note…

5. He taught me that what looks like failure can actually be success.

There is a belief that relationships exist for “a reason, a season or a lifetime” — as long as they are needed. My ex and I, we had a season. And that’s OK.

6. He forced me to face myself.

No marriage ends because of one person — and in our situation it definitely took two to tango. My ex and I were equally responsible for the good moments in our marriage and the bad. Even today, when we get into each other’s faces over something to do with co-parenting, it’s not just him. I know that.

By marrying the wrong guy, I had to face up to my own flaws and unattractive tendencies. They exist, and when my ex pointed them out, as much as I didn’t want to hear it, I knew he was right. When a relationship goes wrong, you have to ask yourself what the common denominator is in every relationship you’ve had that hasn’t worked out. By the way, it’s you.

Missing French Rapper Found In Bronx Hospital, Took The Wrong Train

A tourist, who happens to be a French rapper (no, his name is not Lucien) and went missing while in The Bronx has been found. Arthur Astie wound up in a local hospital after apparently taking the wrong train.

Reports Gothamist:

Arthur Astie had been in the city for about a week when he disappeared. He was supposed to get a 2 train from Brooklyn back to Harlem on Monday night, where he was staying with his family, but instead mistakenly got on the 5 train. He was supposed to fly back to France on Tuesday.

His friend, Sara Ripp, told CBS that Astie does not speak English well and did not know where he was supposed to be getting off. The last anyone heard from him was when Astie called his father saying he was trying to get back to Harlem. “He called his father to say, ‘I’m coming home; don’t worry,’” Ripp said. “He said he was headed underground to go back to Harlem, and that’s the last communication anybody had with him.”

Cops confirmed today that Astie was found “in good condition” at an unspecified hospital in The Bronx late on Friday. It’s not clear why he ended up in the hospital, how family members finally tracked him down, or what happened during the last four days.

Astie was spotted in Harlem while he was “missing,” though.

We can’t way to hear his side of the story.

Shocked Parents Film Family’s Reaction To Finding Out Their Ultrasound Was Wrong

Parents Kyle and Danielle Williams were in for a big surprise on March 3 when their new baby — whom an ultrasound technician had said would be a girl — came out all boy.

“I was speechless and couldn’t believe my eyes,” Kyle told The Huffington Post. “I had been up 24 hours and thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.” Her husband in shock, Danielle didn’t hear the news until the doctor gave his congratulations on the birth of her baby boy. “She was in disbelief and thought we were all joking,” Kyle recalled.

After getting over their initial surprise, Kyle and Danielle decided to film the reactions of their various family members as they told them the girl they were all expecting turned out to be a boy. The final video, which has reached over 120,000 views on YouTube in just three days, features some truly golden moments — like the bit where Danielle’s mother Linda Monday-Jones learns her new grandchild’s sex while changing the baby’s diaper.

The family had to quickly shift from their baby name choice, Charlee, to Bentley Thomas Williams. But ultimately, when the Williams — who already have a 2-year-old daughter named Peyton — learned that the ultrasound technician had made a mistake, Kyle says, “We didn’t care. We are just happy to have a healthy baby.”

And as for little Peyton, “Our daughter really doesn’t fully understand the confusion I don’t think.,” Kyle said. “She was happy just to have a new baby sibling.”

5 Signs He Might Be Wrong For You, Even If The Sex Is Great

Being in love is blinding and this can be ignorant bliss, or simply a poor choice when your goal is to find the right mate for you. Let’s be clear, finding your “one” may not be on your agenda yet, and that’s fine, but for those that are seeking true love, and lifelong compatibility, there are important things to consider outside of sexual attraction and “chemistry”. Future problems tend to be about avoiding those repetitive conflicts and disagreements that are rarely resolved.

Why Everyone Was So Wrong About America’s Alleged Divorce Rate

Earlier this month, The New York Times debunked the long-held myth that 50 percent of marriages end in divorce. But where exactly did that false statistic come from?

HuffPost Live’s Nancy Redd got the answer on Monday from William Doherty, a professor of family social science at the University of Minnesota. He explained:

[That statistic] has always been a projection, and it’s a 40-year projection, and it’s based on data from the early baby boomer generation, when the baby boomers were getting married. So if … 2 percent [of baby boomers] get divorced a year, if you have that sort of projection out over 35 or 40 years, then you have 50 percent or higher. So it was never a fixed amount of current marriages. It was always a projection about the future. And the divorce rate has gone down since the baby boomers were in their marrying age. So it wasn’t such a bad prediction at the beginning, but we’ve not kept up-to-date.

HuffPost Live’s panel also discussed why divorce rates may be falling among younger couples. One possibility is that people are marrying later and later in life, according to Marina Sbrochi, an author currently working on the book Nasty Divorce: A Kid’s Eye View.

“Way back when — you know, ’20s, ’30s, ’40s, ’50s — people got married a lot right out of high school because they’re trying to have sex, so they want to lock it up and get married,” Sbrochi said. “They were maybe rushing into marriages that they’re not vetting out, versus today, people are getting married a lot later. People are getting married in their 30s.”
