Boom For Real: The Late Teenage Years Of Jean-Michel Basquiat follows Basquiat's life pre-fame and how New York City, the times, the people and the movements surrounding him formed the artist he became. Using never-before-seen works, writings and photographs, director Sara Driver, who was part of the New York arts scene herself, worked closely and collaboratively with friends and other artists who emerged from that period: Jim Jarmusch, James Nares, Fab Five Freddy, Glenn O’Brien, Kenny Scharf, Lee Quinones, Patricia Field, Luc Sante and many others. Drawing upon their memories and anecdotes, the film also uses period film footage, music and images to visually re-recreate the era, drawing a portrait of Jean-Michel and Downtown New York City -pre AIDS, President Reagan, the real estate and art booms – before anyone was motivated by money and ambition. The definition of fame, success and power were very different than today – to be a penniless but published poet was the height of success, until everything changed in the early 1980s. This is New York City's story before that change.

Miami Heat v Philadelphia 76ers - Game Two

Source: Mitchell Leff / Getty

The man who threatened to unleash an alleged sex tape featuring actor and comedian Kevin Hart was slapped with extortion charges and now faces four years in jail. Jonathan Jackson’s name was made public after the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office issued a statement regarding the case.

Jackson, 41, an actor who and worked with Hart in the past and also goes by the names Action Jackson and J.T., was charged with one count of attempted extortion and extortion by threatening letter.

According to the statment for the L.A. County DA, tried to force Hart into paying him a huge amount of cash for footage in August 2017 that featured him and Montia Sabbag, which TMZ reportedly said was a Las Vegas stripper after they published the edited footage last September.

As of now, Jackson’s bail is set at $ 100,00 and the maximum time he’ll do for the crime if charged is four years. Hart didn’t fully address the announcement, but a tweet this afternoon seemed to sum up his feelings on the matter.

“Mind blown…Hurt…at a lost for words and simply in complete disbelief at the moment. WOW,” read the tweet.

Gap Flashes Back Nearly 50 Years, and Decades In Between, for Collection

Ah, memories.
Gap Inc. will launch Archive Reissue — Logo Remix, a collection for men and women that includes T-shirts, sweatshirts and rugby shirts, designed with logos from across the decades of the brand, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2019. Logo Remix will be available at gap.com on Jan. 27 and select Gap stores globally beginning Jan. 29.
A limited-edition Logo Remix capsule featuring 30 one-of-a-kind items, made by deconstructing and reworking vintage Gap logo sweatshirts and T-shirts from the brand’s archives, was assembled by hand at Gap’s New York design studio.
A Logo Remix film is populated by a cast of  global talent that’s creating culture on their own terms through music, acting, comedy and activism. “They’re the world’s leading culture remixers,” said Craig Brommers, Gap’s chief marketing officer. “Gap is always one to celebrate and bring culture to the mainstream.”
The group, which includes Awkwafina, Bria Vinaite, Connor Franta, Maya Jama, Metro Boomin, Miles Heizer, Naomi Watanabe, Sabrina Claudio and SZA, will appear in a 30-second version of the film that will air on Sunday during the Grammy Awards.
If the music for the film sounds familiar, it’s Eighties anthem “Hold Me Now,” by the Thompson Twins, remixed by Boomin, who updated the original with his signature 808 beat, making it relevant to today’s hip-hop culture.

In honor of the NHL’s centennial celebration, we set out to determine which calendar year, since 1917, was the greatest in hockey history, factoring in international hockey tournaments and anything off the ice that might have made the year memorable.

Which player will people still talk about 100 years from now?

The centennial of the NHL’s first game got us thinking about the legacy today’s stars will leave. Sidney Crosby has all those Cups and Alex Ovechkin is one of the game’s greatest scorers, but there’s something mythical about hockey’s most famous mullet.

Chanel Makes New Year’s Resolutions

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS: “Call things by their name.” “Take things in hand.” “Makeup your weaknesses (never your emotions).” So read some of the resolutions outlined by Chanel’s new year’s fragrance and beauty campaign, titled “En 2018 Osez” (or “In 2018 Dare”), which is set to run in the Paris metro system between Dec. 19 and 25.
Each written message is paired with a product: “Stop at red,” features a photo of a Rouge Allure lipstick, for instance. “Make a statement with the most care” is shown with a jar of Sublimage cream, and “Long live love and water” is pictured with the No.5 L’Eau fragrance.
The institutional advertisements are meant to suggest that true independence, freedom and success come only after taking full control of one’s own life, as Gabrielle Chanel did, according to Thomas du Pré de Saint Maur, director of creative resources at Chanel Perfumes Beauty and Watches Jewelry.
Chanel, who famously loved to be where she was unexpected, no doubt would have given the nod to the campaign’s lofty-yet-underground nature.

On 1st June, 1967 The Beatles released their ground-breaking studio album…Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Described by Rolling Stone magazine as “The most important rock & roll album ever made”, it marked a pivotal moment in the 60’s and went on to become one of the biggest selling records of all time. Combining firsthand accounts of the events with rare and unseen footage forensically unearthed from mainstream archives and private collectors, this new music documentary by acclaimed director Alan G. Parker, picks up on the band as they end their grueling tour schedule in August 1966 (coincidentally following on from Ron Howard’s Eight Days A Week) to return to the studio to record this landmark album. This insightful and revealing film journeys through various solo projects to the release of ‘Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane’, touching on Flower Power, John Lennon meeting Yoko Ono, LSD, Meditation, Jimi Hendrix, the death of Brian Epstein, Abbey Road Studios and the Magical Mystery Tour. Directed by Alan G. Parker, an Emmy nominated music director whose credits include: Hello Quo, Monty Python: Almost The Truth / Who Killed Nancy? / Rebel Truce: The History Of The Clash).

The Met’s Costume Institute Said Eyeing Fashion and Religion for Next Year’s Exhibition

KEEPING THE FAITH: In these politically charged times, it appears that the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute isn’t afraid to take on its own controversial topics.
Fashion and religion will be the theme of next year’s major exhibition, according to multiple sources, including a few who said they have been privy to preliminary discussions. A Met spokeswoman declined to comment Friday.
With the May opening still many months away, the planning is still in the very early stages. Sources describe the project as serious and ambitious, and it is understood the idea was hatched long before the current “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: The Art of the In-Between” show, slated to close Sept. 4. A host of European designers have referenced religion in their collections, including the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano and Riccardo Tisci. The likeness of the Madonna has been appropriated by Dolce & Gabbana, and the iconography of Jesus has been featured in Jeremy Scott’s collection. Prabal Gurung once brought Buddhist monks to his runway.
In recent years, the Costume Institute exhibitions have been major blockbusters for The Met. Last year’s “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” attracted 752,995 visitors, making it the museum’s seventh

In 1962 four young men – John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr – came together to form the 20th century musical phenomenon known as 'The Beatles'. The band stormed Europe in 1963 and, in 1964, they conquered America. Their groundbreaking world tours changed global youth culture forever and, arguably, invented mass entertainment as we know it today. All the while, the group were composing and recording a series of extraordinarily successful singles and albums. However, the relentless pressure of such unprecedented fame (which in 1966 became uncontrollable turmoil) led to the decision to stop touring. In the ensuing years The Beatles were then free to focus on a series of albums that changed the face of recorded music. Master storyteller and Oscar winner, Ron Howard, explores this incredible journey in his own unique way: How did The Beatles do this? How did they cope with all the fame and pressure? How did they not only survive, but go on to revolutionise popular music? With original interviews, footage, staggering live performances, and the intimate study of character that Ron Howard is known for, he puts us right inside this extraordinary adventure, answering the question everyone always wants to know: What was it like to be there?

Teen Describes ‘Living Hell’ With Couple Now Serving 20 Years In Prison

After police hauled away Jeff and Sandra Weller from their upscale suburban home in Washington where they lived with their six kids, what was discovered behind closed doors was nothing short of a living nightmare. Some of the kids, including Sandra Weller’s adopted twins, were brutally beaten with a piece of lumber that was referred to as “the board,” the refrigerator was locked to restrict their food, cameras monitored their every move, and they were locked in their rooms with no electricity, according to court documents. The couple was found guilty in 2013 and each of them is serving a 20-year prison sentence.

Now 18 years old, Ian, who is Jeff Weller’s biological son, speaks out for the first time and describes what he endured in the video above.

Why do Ian’s mom and stepdad say Child Protective Services failed to protect these kids after numerous calls to them? And how will the victims move forward? The Metropolitan Museum of Art Celebrates 600 Years of Textile Patterns

met todd oldham art

The idea of textile patterns of the Renaissance may not get your blood boiling, but there’s no denying that the current exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, “Fashion and Virtue: Textile Patterns and the Print Revolution, 1520–1620,” is a visual feast. Staged throughout the museum’s circular Robert Lehman wing, the show starts off with 16th-century prints and fabrics and ends triumphantly on sparkling Yves Saint Laurent, Giorgio di Sant’Angelo, and Todd Oldham pieces from the 20th century, proving that pattern has been a great unifier across places, genres, and centuries of fashion.

On Friday evening, Oldham was on hand to discuss his own love affair with archival patterns and fabrics with curator Femke Speelberg and a group of guests. “The DNA between them all is so obvious, even in the dress that I made, in proximity to this exquisite Russian apron from the 1800s,” he said, motioning to a glittering minidress of his design from the ’90s paired with traditional Russian garb from a century earlier. “When you look at those two pieces together, the Russian dress from the 1800s looks like it could be the contemporary dress, and my dress looks much, much older, but they do look very closely in the way we bifurcated the upper parts of the dress and where we set motifs or volumes. They’re practically identical.” The same could be said for a traditional Nordic Fair Isle sweater, which was paired with a ’70s iteration from Yves Saint Laurent, but could also stand against the cropped versions shown in Raf Simons’s final Dior collection this October.

The proliferation of cross-cultural borrowing of pattern and print is nothing too new, Speelberg’s exhibition points out. Thanks to the discovery of the printing press in the 15th century, textile pattern books became popular fodder by the 1530s, allowing ideas to be carried from Italy to France to the Germanic Northern states throughout the Renaissance. The Renaissance printing boom was essentially the Instagram of its day, bringing new imagery into homes far and wide and inspiring a new generation of textile designers. The only thing to remember at the Met exhibit: Don’t double-tap the art.

Fashion and Virtue: Textile Patterns and the Print Revolution, 1520–1620” is on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art through January 10, 2016.

Annie Remains Optimistic After All These Years

2015-10-17-1445043217-5445688-1439919595_Annie1284r.jpg
The Cast of Annie at the Pantages through November 1st

Millions out of work; homeless camps filling up in every town and those lucky enough to have a job barely getting by, always worried. Stratification everywhere, either you’re a have, or a have not and the gap between seems unbridgeable. Bleak times of joblessness, homelessness, hunger, fear, a veritable depression.

The sad part is I’m not describing the Great Recession of 2008 or the election of 2016; although on this night, Tuesday, October 13 the Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are discussing these very issues and their place in our future.

No, I’m talking about the era of the latest incarnation of the musical Annie; the Depression era story of an optimistic orphan, her dog and her, well, her Daddy. It’s also a story of a starving America, of Hoovervilles (shanty towns, the literal end of the road), of people leaving their children in the care of strangers because at least they’d have food, and the story of a new deal, The New Deal, quite literally; new deals for both our star orphan and the nation.

My knowledge of the current situation, its parallel to the suffering so many are experiencing today added a real sense of gloom to Annie’s situation and made it very easy to relate to the themes of the play. Gone was the fun movie memory of my youth or even my exposure to the original Tony winning play with Andrea McArdle as the lead through television of the day; no, at 52 in today’s America relating to songs like It’s A Hard Knock Life or the omnipresent Tomorrow doesn’t take any suspended disbelief at all.

2015-10-17-1445043267-5802280-1439919647_Annie1412r.jpg

Sickle, Taggett and Ashley Elder in Annie

This time around we have Issie Swickle as Annie, Gilgamesh Taggett as Oliver Warbucks; Lynn Andrews as Miss Hannigan; Ashley Elder as Grace; Garrett Deagon as Rooster; Lucy Werner as Lily; Jeffrey B. Duncan as FDR. It’s Swickle and Taggett that command most of the night and the scenes but Andrews’ Miss Hannigan is much welcomed comic delight and almost makes you want to root for the bad girl. Issue Swickle leads a large cast of youth effortlessly and Annie isn’t really about one orphan’s good luck, it’s about all of us finding our own. The play almost demands you acknowledge that dammit, tomorrow things just may work out after all and refuses to leave you in a bad mood about it. Yes, the world may be going to hell, but it doesn’t have to, it can be saved, one orphan at a time, one person at a time. Love can still be found at Christmas, strays can find forever homes and Presidents can still be relevant and make great change happen.

2015-10-17-1445043324-4618353-1439919595_Annie1284r.jpg

The cast readies for a New Deal

And just as in those very days of the Depression, Annie allows the audience to find joy in sorrow, to find laughter in the most bleak of circumstances and to find hope where there may not be any. Because no matter the time, hearts still yearn to be warmed, voices still want to be raised, hands still want to clap, people still want to love.

As I sit with most of the New Deal collapsing around me from neglect, the roads, bridges, the programs like Social Security all in danger and America at risk of becoming a very Depressing place yet again, inside the theatre walls, it’s all forgotten, if only for a few hours. Inside the Pantages up until November 1 miracles still happen, little girls can still find families and America can be optimistic again, confident that the sun will indeed come out tomorrow.

From Swept Off Her Feet To Divorce Papers In 2 Years – What Happened?

How does a couple go from sparks flying and tying the knot to the verge of signing divorce papers … in only two years?

Vicki and Mark’s final divorce hearing is next week, but they turn to Dr. Phil for one last-ditch effort to save their two-year marriage. “If our marriage can’t be fixed on the show, I am definitely ready to finalize our divorce next week,” says Vicki.

Watch the video above as they reveal how their relationship went from love at first sight to this painful crossroads.

“About six months into our marriage, our relationship took kind of a turn,” recalls Mark, who says his wife has kicked him out of the house nine times since they tied the knot. (Vicki estimates it to be closer to four or five times.)

How To Fight Fair (If You Don’t, It Could Mean Divorce)

“Mark lied about the amount of money he said he was making per year,” claims Vicki. “I feel like a sugar momma and I don’t like feeling that way.” She adds, “Mark has been very greedy, selfish and narcissistic … The last two years have been the worst two years of my life.”

Mark, who does not want to split up, sees it differently. “I think Vicki is obsessed with money,” he says. “Her expectations are really high. It seems like everything I do for Vicki is not good enough for her. I can’t read her mind!”

5 Questions You Need To Ask Before You Decide To Divorce

Vicki also claims Mark is a liar and a cheater, pointing to his text messages with a 21-year-old that she believes were inappropriate. “I was hurt and devastated,” she says.

“Vicki is obsessed with the idea that I’m cheating on her,” says Mark, who is willing to take a lie detector test to prove his fidelity. “Vicki is very jealous and she demands a lot of attention,” he explains. “It’s gotten so bad that she has visions of me having sex with another woman.”

Can this marriage be saved? What happens when Mark takes a lie detector test? Watch more from Wednesday’s episode of Dr. Phil, “The Clock Is Ticking And If Dr. Phil Can’t Help Us, My Wife Is Divorcing Me Next Week.”

Donald Trump Has Spent Years Trying To Prove He’s Not A ‘Short-Fingered Vulgarian’

Donald Trump is apparently still upset about a journalist criticizing his teeny-tiny fingers decades ago.

In his most recent editor’s letter, Vanity Fair Editor Graydon Carter criticizes Trump, whom he calls a “bully,” for having a thin skin. Carter recalls that over a quarter-century ago, he began referring to the business mogul as a “short-fingered vulgarian.”

The jab seemed to hit a nerve. Carter says Trump still sends him envelopes from time to time, trying to prove that his fingers are perfectly normal:

I almost feel sorry for the poor fellow because, to me, the fingers still look abnormally stubby. The most recent offering arrived earlier this year, before his decision to go after the Republican presidential nomination. Like the other packages, this one included a circled hand and the words, also written in gold Sharpie: “See, not so short!” I sent the picture back by return mail with a note attached, saying, “Actually, quite short.” Which I can only assume gave him fits.

In an effort to obtain the truth, HuffPost has compared Trump’s fingers with baby carrots. See for yourself.

Trump has done plenty to drag out the feud with Carter, calling him “dopey” and “a loser with bad food restaurants.” (We assume his other kinds of restaurants are OK.)

Read Carter’s full letter — titled “Why Donald Trump Will Always Be a “Short-Fingered Vulgarian” – here.

The 15 nominees — including Janet Jackson, Nine Inch Nails, The Smiths and Chaka Khan — span many genres, styles and time periods, though to qualify, they have to have released their first album or single at least 25 years ago.

Here’s the full list of nominees, in alphabetical order:

  • Chicago
  • Cheap Trick
  • Deep Purple
  • The Cars
  • Chaka Khan
  • Chic
  • The J.B.’s
  • Janet Jackson

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — located in Cleveland, Ohio — doesn’t have a set number of slots open for induction each year, though a representative said that they usually aim to admit five performers, plus several more in other categories.

The final list of inductees will be determined by votes from more than 800 musical artists, professionals and historians from around the world; each will be able to select up to five of the nominees.

In addition, fans everywhere will be able to vote for inductees online — including right here:

The five artists that get the most votes from online fans will be added to a “fans ballot” that will be tallied along with the ballots from the Hall of Fame’s panel.

The names of the inductees will be revealed in December, and the actual induction will take place April 2016 in New York City.

Bonpoint Celebrates 40 Years

HAPPY FAMILIES: Guessing which kid walking the runway belonged to a celebrity parent sitting front row was the game of choice at Bonpoint’s show on Saturday evening, in the specially decked out Orangery at Paris’ Jardin de Luxembourg.
The presentation and following 40th anniversary celebrations drew the likes of Inès de la Fressange, Sylvie Testud, Karin Viard and Karine Silla.
Silla was there to support 12-year-old daughter Tess, making her first appearance on the runway.
Tess’ dad, actor, director and photographer Vincent Perez, missed the show, however, arriving with a suitcase as guests filtered out of the venue for Champagne — or fruit juice and cherry candies, depending on the age bracket — in the park.
It turns out his plane had been delayed returning from St. Petersburg, where he received a prize for his career at the Message to Man festival.
“I’ve got quite a lot going on at the moment,” he said, obviously disappointed to have missed his daughter’s debut.
Perez has just finished directing “Alone in Berlin,” a WWII drama starring Emma Thompson, out next year, and is touring with “Les Liaisons Dangereuses,” in which he plays Valmont.
Next week, Perez will participate in the first Mérignac photography festival in the southwest of France,

SNL in Review: How Will Ferrell Saved ‘Saturday Night Live’ 20 Years Ago and Transformed Comedy

In SNL IN REVIEW, we look back at some of the notable cinematic efforts from Saturday Night Live alum, and place them in context of the actor-comedian’s career.

Throughout its history, Saturday Night Live has experienced ebbs and flows, departing cast members signaling the end of one era, new additions launching another. (Arguably, we are in one of those periods now.) Most famously, the Not Ready for Primetime Players exited SNL at the beginning of the 80s, giving way to Eddie Murphy “saving” the show singlehandedly until Lorne Michaels’ return in 1985.

The definitive shift, however, took place 20 years ago.

SNL can really be split into two halves: boomer humor, and post-boomer humor. The first period (1975-1995) was a coup of sorts – a sign that anti-establishment voices, besieged by Vietnam and Watergate, had arrived. Their sensibility eventually became entrenched in the mainstream, typified by the Hollywood success stories of John Belushi in The Blues Brothers and Bill Murray in Caddyshack. However, as the first wave splintered, a different, post-boomer comic perspective began to emerge. The first appearance of a young Will Ferrell at the 21st SNL season premiere on September 30, 1995 doesn’t simply portend this development; it’s the line in the sand, the threshold, a link to today’s universe of comic viral content. Ferrell himself described what was at stake to Marc Maron as “this will either work, or the show will get cancelled.”

The release of his recent HBO special, Ferrell Takes the Field, and this summer’s Lifetime movie A Deadly Adoption demonstrates that Ferrell continues to enjoy long-lasting celebrity. But commemorating his casting on SNL is more than his iconic film characters over the years: Ron Burgundy, Brennan Huff, Buddy the Elf, Ricky Bobby, Mugatu, Steve Butabi. It’s also about the shift in American humor from the ironic smarm employed by SNL‘s first stars to something more surreal and, regrettably, clickworthy.

In fact, a review of Ferrell’s sketch work on the show reveals a foundation for what’s been an often influential and successful film career. As a result, Ferrell is among the last true comedy superstar to be bred on Saturday Night Live.

A decade into Lorne Michael’s second reign as showrunner, SNL was once again facing an identity crisis. Besieged by scathing reviews and low ratings, Michaels opted to once again retool. His timing was critical — many of the show’s stars (Dana Carvey, Mike Myers) had left for Hollywood, while others were dragging the show to increasingly juvenile, and possibly misogynistic, places. This conglomerate, the “Bad Boys of SNL,” consisted of Adam Sandler and Chris Farley, both of whom would be fired after the disastrous ’94-’95 season. In more ways than one, the show was hitting a wall creatively.

With good reason. Remarkably, the show up until this point had mostly targeted, under its various incarnations, baby boomers. (Any lip service paid to Gen X was incidental, and not reflective of their perspective.) Musical guests and hosts during the 20th season resembled names that could’ve contributed during the show’s initial run (and did): Bob Newhart, Eric Clapton, Paul Simon, Steve Martin, Rod Stewart. The original cast was hitting middle age – Dan Aykroyd was only 43 by 1995 -and it was not uncommon to still see Not Ready for Primetime Players still headlining films in multiplexes. (In 1995, the waning Chevy Chase starred in Man of the House, while Aykroyd inaugurated the “Home for SNL-Bred Ex-Box Office Champs” with appearances in Tommy Boy and Canadian Bacon.)

In order to stave off cancellation, SNL needed to turn the page. As host Mariel Hemingway states in her monologue, the show was filled with changes: “new director, new writers, new set.” While many, including Chris Rock, have described Eddie Murphy’s legendary contributions, less noted are the ways Ferrell’s character work changed the course of the show.

It was an inauspicious beginning during the season premiere. Riffing on her then-controversial kiss with Roseanne, Hemingway introduces Ferrell (briefly) before fawning and kissing over the new female cast members. He’s there, then gone.

Later, his knack for appearing well-intentioned and normal pays off. Mariel Hemingway’s wife wants to get off the phone and enlists Ferrell, as her husband, to come up with increasingly outlandish reasons for her to hang up. This brief sketch captures the absurdity of the mundane that would soon become his hallmark. Later film roles, from Old School to Kicking & Screaming, are based on the simple notion that Ferrell looks like the average dad who accidentally loses his shit. He’s a live action Randy Marsh.

Ferrell’s audition reveals similar thematic terrain; as Tina Fey has said, he always had an eye for subverting All American males and heartland values. He launches into Ted Kennedy-as-a-standup, a bad Bill Clinton impression, before beginning his classic “Get Off the Shed!” routine (which he also does in his first show), and acting out his corporate executive playing with yarn. That seeming docility, and its lurking rage, made Ferrell a prime pop cultural figure at the beginning of the new millennium – a representation of suburban residents and their discontent. This thread begins at SNL, before its eventual transition to “We’re Going Streaking!” (Worth noting: his first feature length writing credit, A Night at the Roxbury, tweaks the inherent silliness of youthful machismo and hook up culture.)

Viewing Ferrell as a comedy auteur makes his sketch work significant within the broader scope of his now legendary film career. In fact, since joining SNL, Ferrell has always resembled something of an outlier. By the early 90s, many of SNL‘s stars still fell within a second cohort for baby boomers – Farley and Spade were born in 1964. Phil Hartman was born in 1948. Ferrell, for his part, was born in 1967, but his peak popularity would fall just as a generation of young people were signing up for Facebook. Sure, he cut teeth doing standup in Orange County during the early 90s, before linking up with the Groundlings. (Which soon became the training ground for sitcom and SNL performers, displacing Second City, which had been the dominant clearinghouse for cast members in the 70s and 80s.) However, a combination of timing and the uniqueness of his characters would allow Ferrell to transcend his peers.

Characters played by Ferrell on SNL were often innocents (Spartan Cheerleaders), or oddballs (James Lipton, Goulet). Collectively, they lent the template for his later onscreen portrayals. Marty Culp proved his musical chops, giving way to his unhinged song & dance as Franz Liebkind in The Producers, as well as his pivotal, earth shattering performance at the end of Step Brothers. Craig Buchanan might’ve graduated high school, one day moved to North Pole and become Buddy the Elf. The basic lovable American idiot first shown in his George Bush would soon give way, in one variation or another, to Ron Burgundy and Ricky Bobby. Never fully disappearing behind makeup (a la Mike Myers), or a natural mimic (like Carvey), Ferrell’s success in Hollywood has been forged on the subtle range of types he perfected as an SNL cast member.

His best film work utilized him as a friendlier, commercialized, updated version of Andy Kaufman. (Besides Bewitched or Land of the Lost, none of his film projects approach the disaster of Heartbeeps, thankfully.) Moreover, his frequent, now trademark use of non-sequiturs was first witnessed in sketch work, such as the ones focused on the unseen Bill Brasky. Becoming his calling card, that brand of humor has been central to his ongoing success as a film star, whose movies have grossed nearly $ 2.4 billion domestically, adjusted for inflation. Moreover, Ferrell’s legacy may include the way his trademark humor’s role in today’s increasingly online hub for comedy and viral content (and, in the case of Brasky, serving as the obvious inspiration for Dos Equis’ Most Interesting Man in the World campaign).

The reverberations of Ferrell’s SNL work goes beyond his own films. The immortal “More Cowbell” skit was done only once, and is frequently cited as one of the greatest sketches in the show’s history. (Character Gene Frenkle has since reappeared when Ferrell has hosted alongside the SNL musical guest.) Perhaps only Peanut Butter Jelly Time! has been as widely circulated with comedy’s transition into the millennial-centered world of memes and share-able links. And “More Cowbell” (then Pearl and Anchorman) were at the front lines. Andy Samberg is often credited with shepherding SNL into the digital age, but Ferrell’s output, and the catchphrases he invented, certainly pointed in the direction of the wind.

Today, Ferrell is still ubiquitous, particularly with the success of Funny or Die. It’s odd to recall that his early film work was amidst the tail end of Lorne Michaels’ bid to translate every popular sketch to film: A Night at the Roxbury, Ladies Man, Superstar, and the fatefully aborted Sprockets movie. Ferrell was a fixture in the original Austin Powers and worked with Jim Carrey, yet has never felt like a dated relic of the 90s.

Indeed, it’s hard to imagine comedy today without More Cowbell, strategery or much of what makes Talladega Nights and the original Anchorman so memorable. Along with Family Guy, Ferrell succeeded in pioneering a new path for mainstream comedy that’s been copped and practically beaten to death. Twenty years since his SNL debut, his everyman fury, gift for improvisation and random, digital friendly quotables (“By the beard of Zeus!”) is now common in pop culture (if not a tad trite). There’s a reason, at age 44, he was selected as the 2011 recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

Few comics have sustained as diverse and lengthy a comic resume as Ferrell. Alongside Kristen Wiig, Ferrell altered the kinds of characters shown on SNL. Whether they were secret weirdos, or typical American dolts, Ferrell tapped into a humanity which still resonates with audiences. In doing so, he liberated SNL from its own legacy, allowing the show to avoid cancellation and grow into a third golden age.

Watch 100 Years Of Wedding Dresses In 3 Minutes

Since 1900, there have been a few unchanging features of the Western wedding dress. White gowns have generally been favored (though historically, that wasn’t always true), longer dresses have remained in style and bridal veils have endured as a popular accessory.

But as with all fashion, wedding dresses evolved, adapting to the trends of the day.

In the video above, watch as Mode explores “100 Years of Wedding Gowns,” starting with a high-collared, lacy number from the 1910s and ending with a form-fitting, embellished gown from 2015.

Earlier this year, an infographic highlighting popular wedding dress styles went viral. The graphic, created by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, also detailed the shifts in bridal fashion from the 1900s to the 2010s. See it here.

What This Mom Has Learned From Eight Years Of Stepfamily Life

As part of our Blended Family Friday series, each week we spotlight a different stepfamily to learn how they’ve worked to bring their two families together. Our hope is that by telling their stories, we’ll bring you closer to blended family bliss in your own life! Want to share your family’s story? Email us at divorce@huffingtonpost.com.

When she started her blog in 2004, writer Mir Kamin was a single mom facing the realities of divorce. When she married a single guy with no kids of his own in 2007, the blog got even better.

Below, the mom of two tells us how the kids and the parents have adjusted to stepfamily life.

Hi Mir! Please introduce us to your family. How long have you and your husband been together?

At this point, our immediate family consists of myself, my second (and final!) husband Otto, my daughter (17) and my son (15).

How long have you and your spouse been together?

We’ve been married about eight and a half years, but we met our sophomore year in college, which means we’ve known each other for about 26 years.

What are some of the biggest challenges of blended family life?

In our case, it wasn’t just the blending, but that my husband went from being a lifelong bachelor to having a whole family, bam, in his mid-30s. On top of that, he didn’t have much experience with children and both my kids have special needs. So it was… interesting. I’d say that in general the biggest issue arrived when he stopped just hanging back to let me handle stuff and started actively participating in discipline.

Don’t get me wrong, I think he did it just right, but it was a real sort of, “Wait, what? What’s happening here?” for both kids. Specifically, now that both kids are teens, my husband often defaults to what I like to call the “scorched earth” approach and then we have to navigate the whole, “Wait, everyone take a breath, we’re going to have a united front on this situation but first we have to go figure out what it is” thing. It’s not just that he often wants to go with harsher consequences, it’s that even after all this time, the kids still aren’t entirely sure of their connection with him and so that’s always in the back of my mind.

What’s the best thing about being part of a blended family?

All the relatives! I come from a very small family in every possible direction and my kids’ dad’s family isn’t that much bigger, but my husband comes from a family with lots of aunts and uncles and cousins and that’s been awesome all around. Yeah, you have to get used to having a third parent around but look at all the bonus grandparents and other folks you get!

What makes you proudest of your family?
At the end of the day, I think we’ve managed to build a home that’s full of love and humor and respect. And that’s not because we’re so special or great but because it was a priority for my husband and me both in our marriage and in raising the kids. There have been hard times (lots of ’em, actually) but we’re all in it together. “This is a solvable problem” is kind of our family motto. So far, it’s been true.

What advice do you have for other blended families who feel like a peaceful family dynamic is out of reach?

Keep trying. It can take years but love and respect erode a lot of difficult walls, even if the process is slow. And keep an open mind — maybe the end result isn’t going to be what you’d pictured but maybe it’ll be even better.

News in Brief: Tearful Anthropologists Discover Dead Ancestor Of Humans 100,000 Years Too Late

JOHANNESBURG—Lamenting that there was nothing they could possibly do, tearful anthropologists announced at a press conference Thursday that they had discovered the bodies of 15 deceased human ancestors 100,000 years too late. “Not too long ago, these early people were alive and going about their normal daily lives, but sadly, by the time we scaled down the narrow 90-meter chute leading into the cave, they’d already been dead for at least 10,000 decades,” said visibly upset University of the Witwatersrand paleoanthropologist Lee R. Berger, bemoaning the fact that they could have saved the group of human predecessors if they had just reached the Rising Star cave system during the Pleistocene epoch. “We briefly considered resuscitation when we found their bodies, but after a cursory examination we knew that they were already gone. If we found them a hundred millennia sooner, this tragedy might have been prevented …

The Eye-Opening Evolution Of Miss America’s Body Over 95 Years

The Miss America pageant has been shaping beauty ideals ever since it first began in 1921.

PsychGuides.com, an educational website that provides information about mental health, tracked the evolution of Miss America’s body type over the past 95 years. The GIF and timelines created by the website highlights just how unrealistic this image of the “ideal” body for the American woman really is.

The educational website found that while the average woman in the U.S. has gotten heavier since 1921, Miss America has gotten thinner. This information is more relevant than ever with the 2015 Miss America Pageant taking place this Sunday night.

Although the pageant started in 1921, the first winner wasn’t crowned until 1922 which explains why the images begin in 1922.

The GIF above shows that the shift towards a dramatically thinner body type didn’t happen until the late ’90s, early ’00s.

According to a BMI chart created by PsychGuides, the BMI of the average American woman has slowly increased while the BMI of Miss America winners has slowly decreased since 1921. The chart shows that in 1990 the average BMI of the American woman was roughly about 24.5, while the average BMI of a Miss America winner was around 18.

As PsychGuides points out, the pageant describes Miss America as a woman who “represents the highest ideals,” the pageant’s website reads. “She is a real combination of beauty, grace, and intelligence, artistic and refined. She is a type which the American Girl might well emulate.”

Sadly, the average Miss America doesn’t properly reflect how most of the women in America actually look. PsychGuides’ research found that nearly a third of Miss America winners are considered underweight. (And it doesn’t help that almost all of them are white.)

“While the underweight frames of Miss America contestants don’t necessarily represent disordered eating and exercise habits within that group, they can perpetuate an unrealistic expectation for the average female’s body,” a PsychGuides press release said.

Although, the very existence of the pageant itself has been argued to be problematic, some parts of the contest are more archaic than others — namely the swimsuit competition. While the swimsuit portion is one of the most well-known sections of the pageant, it exacerbates and magnifies the already existing (and unrealistic) cultural beauty standards in the U.S.

“Now more than ever, the ideal image of beauty portrayed by the contest inaccurately represents average American women,” the press release said.

Scroll through the timeline below to see just how little the Miss America body type has changed, along with its blatant lack of diversity.

‘The Martian’ Is One Of The Year’s Best Movies

Remember that perplexing scene in “Interstellar” when Matt Damon pops up and tries to kill Matthew McConaughey so he can return to Earth? The one that, as the Internet gladly pointed out last year, was rife with plot holes and silly space fisticuffs? I’d like to think that Damon saw his bit in the Christopher Nolan film, rolled his eyes and said, “The moviegoing world deserves better. Let’s do better.”

Enter “The Martian.” It started as a popular debut novel by Andy Weir, but the movie could have easily gone south: Sci-fi maestro Ridley Scott (“Alien,” “Blade Runner”) hasn’t made a great film since 2007’s “American Gangster,” and this lofty yarn was greenlit under the shadow of the technologically groundbreaking ”Gravity” and Nolan’s aforementioned space-time epic. But the Damon comeuppance that I’ve concocted in my imagination is quite applicable indeed, because “The Martian” is phenomenal.

Having premiered at the ongoing Toronto Film Festival ahead of its Oct. 2 release, “The Martian” is a populist sci-fi adventure that clocks in at more than two hours, yet flies by. It’s like the film operates at zero gravity — it’s nerdy if you want it to be, but there is nothing fussy or ornate to weigh it down. As a survival story about Mark Watney (Damon), an astronaut stranded on Mars after his crew flees a windstorm, it is a witty character piece brimming with humor. As an interplanetary adventure about the NASA team coordinating Mark’s rescue and the botany and engineering skills he administers to stay alive, it is a thrill ride about a resourceful guy who “sciences the shit out of” a terrifying predicament. But scientific minutiae are not the movie’s MO, however technical the jargon is at times. The story is crystal clear (bye, “Interstellar”), the characters are three-dimensional beings without a hammy metaphor to work toward (sorry, “Gravity”), and the aesthetics are so understatedly beautiful that you might forget to marvel (see ya, Marvel).

And the supporting cast! Oh, that dynamite supporting cast. Mark’s crew comprises Jessica Chastain, who plays the mission’s sturdy commander, as well as Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan and Aksel Hennie. Back in Houston, where there is most definitely a problem that extends to a national PR crisis, we find Jeff Daniels as the NASA director, Chiwetel Ejiofor as a scientific strategist and Donald Glover as an 11th-hour savior. Not to mention Kristen Wiig (though the movie doesn’t quite know what to do with her character), Sean Bean and Mackenzie Davis, who carries a surprising amount of the earthbound humor. That’s an expansive list of actors, and Drew Goddard’s script manages to give each his or her proper due. We don’t know much about Mark’s and the others’ lives beyond Mars and/or NASA, and that’s perfectly fine because we understand what makes them tick within the parameters of their plight. That’s a true accomplishment.

I expect “The Martian” will find the box-office velocity it deserves. It’s the third movie I’ve seen this year, after “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Inside Out,” that is worthy of a Best Picture nomination, which it very well could garner. But first, let yourself be carried up, up and away by the film, whose stirring conclusion had me in tears. “The Martian” is removed from the dystopian-slanted existentialism that has come to define science-fiction since “2001: A Space Odyssey” bolstered the genre in 1968. This movie has heart. With that, Ridley Scott has given us something special.

Note: A previous version of this article misidentified the main character’s name as Mark Whatley.
