How Eva Mendes ‘Saved’ New York & Co.

Many retail brands view celebrity associations as a silver bullet — in good economic times and bad — and there’s been an increased air of desperation to the deal-making as the retail world continues to experience unprecedented changes and challenges. But only the authentic relationships thrive, and companies could take a lesson from New York & Co. when it comes to signing an actress to design a collection.
When the vertical retailer signed Eva Mendes five years ago, the company was established, yet not exactly dynamic. “People liked it, but they didn’t love it, and she brought the emotional piece,” said chief executive officer Greg Scott. “I say in every investor meeting that Eva saved New York & Co. because she was the first talent that said, ‘OK I’m going to take a shot at it.’ She brought her heart and soul to the brand.”
That was evident at Thursday night’s fall and holiday 2018 presentation at The Palace Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. The event unspooled with a short film — Mendes’ first turn in front of the camera since she had two daughters with husband Ryan Gosling — by writer-director Massy Tadjedin, who directed Mendes in the 2010 film “Last

EXCLUSIVE: Cartier to Unveil Precious Garage Concept at New York Fashion Week

Cartier will unveil its Precious Garage concept during New York Fashion Week, an installation done for the French jeweler by New York-based artist Desi Santiago.
The installation will usher in new iterations of the brand’s Juste un Clou and Écrou de Cartier collections, beginning with a party on Sept. 6 at Cartier’s Fifth Avenue mansion hosted by Mercedes Abramo, president and chief executive officer of Cartier North America, and Bernadette Hitt, director of the Cartier mansion.
Santiago has made a name for himself bridging art and fashion, staging performance and installation-based exhibitions at New York’s MoMa PS-1 and Art Basel Miami. He previously collaborated with the iconic French jeweler on a project at Salone del Mobile in Milan last year.
The Juste un Clou was created in the Seventies by Cartier designer Aldo Cipullo in New York. Using his concept of hardware as jewelry, Cipullo first created the Love Bracelet, and later the Juste un Clou, which reconceptualizes a nail as a piece of jewelry. In 2017, the brand reimagined Cipullo’s hardware concept with the Ecrou de Cartier, which interprets the head of a nut and screw as a bracelet and ring.

Angela Yee Named New York Public Library Ambassador

West Indian American/Caribbean American Heritage Reception

Source: Johnny Nunez / Getty

Angela Yee will help usher a new generation of readers. She has just been named an ambassador for The New York Public Library.

As a longtime cardholder, the media personality will encourage students to take advantage of all the books, periodicals, and films available at the 143 branches within the New York metropolitan area. She will also participate in New York Public Library events, campaigns, and programs, and is planning to host her book club at library branches across the city.

“Some of my best memories growing up in New York are the times I spent in the public library where I developed my love for reading” Yee shared. “I decided in first grade that I would go to college and be an English major, which I did. There are so many programs and so much to love about your local branch, and I’m excited to become a New York Public Library Ambassador to explore that with you.”

In a statement, NYPL President Anthony W. Marx applauded her continued commitment to the community. “Angela Yee is a remarkable person whose success as a radio personality, entrepreneur, and writer is equaled by her insatiable desire to give back to her city and its people.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio and Chirlane McCray inducted the Brooklyn native at their annual West Indian-American and Caribbean-American Heritage celebration at Gracie Mansion on Tuesday, August 28.

Proenza Schouler to Return to New York

COMING BACK: After showing on the Paris couture schedule for two seasons, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler are bringing their runway show back to New York in September. They revealed the news via Instagram.
“It’s been a fun ride showing the past two seasons in Paris during Couture (thank you Chambre Syndicale), but NY will always be home so we are coming back for spring-summer 2019. In today’s world, when, where, and how one shows can be looser and more fluid than ever and so for now, NY is our home once again. Paris was an amazing opportunity to show what we do to a completely different audience that had never been able to attend a Proenza Schouler show and on that level, as well as on a creative level, it felt really right. We want to thank everyone who was responsible for making Paris an unforgettable experience. Looking forward to heading back home now and being a part of NYFW in September, where it all began,” read the post’s caption.
McCollough and Hernandez’s departure from New York coincided with a mini-migration of buzzy American brands, including Rodarte, Thom Browne and Altuzarra, decamping for Paris last year. Thom Browne

Beef Alert: Chief Keef Shot At Outside New York Hotel

Berner Presents Hippie Hill

Source: Tim Mosenfelder / Getty

After the tough talk from Tekashi 6ix9ine, reports broke out this morning that Chief Keef was shot at this morning in front of a New York hotel. Tekashi named Keef and fellow Chicago rapper Lil Reese in a threatening message daring the Drill artists to kill him in 48 hours.

New York Post reports:

But the would-be assailant missed the mark, instead striking a sign in the front of the W Hotel on Broadway near West 47th St. around 5 a.m., sources added.

Cops are hunting for two men in connection to the shooting.

Chief Keef, who released his latest album The GloFiles (Pt. 1) last month and boasts 4.7 million followers on Instagram, may have been having a social media beef with a rival rapper from Brooklyn, according to a police source.

From the sounds of this, it appears that it will be a very hot summer.

Based on what we can gather from her popping IG page, Lopez does most of her work in the city that never sleeps.  Aside from looking dope and showcasing her growing boy here there, it appears Lopez gets it in at various spots around the city as a dancer, hostess, bartender and more.  And she also has a love of Hip-Hop with photos of the late Chinx, Wacka Flocka Flame and others.

New York Fashion Week Is Flush With Experimental Formats

Much ado has been made of the state of New York Fashion Week: Is it less relevant? Is it better than ever? Is it moving to the summer? Does runway still matter?
Answers to all of those questions are elusive, but one thing is for certain: the fashion calendar is ever changing.
This season is marked by an absence of familiar names in familiar time slots. In addition to those that decamped to Paris last year — Altuzarra, Proenza Schouler, Rodarte and Thom Browne — Public School, Creatures of the Wind and Baja East are absent from the runway calendar. Rihanna’s star power will be missed this season, as Puma has no plans to show a Fenty Puma x Rihanna collection for fall. Rihanna originally signed a three-year contract in December of 2014. It could not be learned if her contract had been renegotiated.
Photos and films are the chosen avenue for many. For the first time since launching Monse in 2015, Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim have opted to show their collection via a short film directed by Fabien Constant to be screened at a party on Tuesday in lieu of a runway show. Still, Garcia and Kim aren’t stepping away from the runway

Louis Vuitton Opens Sneaker Pop-Up in New York

Ugly sneakers have stampeded into luxury fashion to become the improbable “it” shoe in the last year. So much so that Louis Vuitton, where Nicolas Ghesquiere introduced the Nineties sci-fi Archlight with a generously proportioned cushy sole for spring, is opening a pop-up shop specifically devoted to the style for a month in New York City. The temporary store will open at 122 Greene Street in SoHo on Thursday in advance of the worldwide launch of the Archlight sneaker on Feb. 23. The store will remain open until March 10. The SoHo space, chosen because the sneaker clientele tends to be a downtown crowd, and designed by the Louis Vuitton team, will be the only sneaker pop-up — the house has done fragrance pop-ups in the past — and will carry an exclusive all-black colorway of the style. Sneakers aren’t new for Vuitton but the Archlight was a major statement on Ghesquiere’s spring runway, shown in contrast to the elaborate 18th-century inspired ready-to-wear pieces.

The Louis Vuitton Archlight sneaker in all black will be exclusive to the SoHo pop-up.

Tom Ford to Show Men’s at New York Fashion Week

The mystery designer has been identified.
Tom Ford will take the final spot on the men’s portion of the New York Fashion Week calendar next month with a runway show on Feb. 6. The show will be held at 8 p.m. at the Park Avenue Armory, immediately following Joseph Abboud at 7 p.m.
Although Ford has shown his men’s wear in New York in the past, this will mark the first time the designer has shown his men’s collection alone during New York Fashion Week: Men’s. His most recent New York show was in September of 2017 when he kicked off New York Fashion Week with a women’s show at the Armory. His spring 2018 men’s line was shown in Milan.
Last month, the Council of Fashion Designers of America said that it had pushed back the dates of New York Fashion Week: Men’s slightly to Feb. 5 through Feb. 7, immediately preceding the women’s shows that start on Feb. 8 — and creating one big 10-day dual-gender event. At the time, Mark Beckham, vice president of marketing for CFDA, hinted that another “big-name designer” was about to jump onto the men’s calendar, but it took until Monday for Ford to be identified as

New York Cares and The Fashion Foundation Help New Yorkers in Need

‘TIS THE SEASON: More than halfway to its goal of collecting 125,000 donated coats, this year’s annual New York Cares Coat Drive has less than a week to go.
New Yorkers can drop off coats at multiple locations including the group’s West 31st Street warehouse, any New York Police Department precinct, all Queens library branches and Grand Central Terminal or Penn Station through Dec. 31. Those who don’t have jackets to give can text “coat” to 41444 to donate money that will be used by the nonprofit to buy and deliver coats. The city has at least 1.7 million people living below the poverty line including 60,000 who are without permanent housing, according to a New York Cares spokeswoman.
The group has collected and donated 1.8 million coats to New Yorkers in need over the past 29 years. This year’s requests from shelters, social service agencies and schools is an increase compared to last year’s tally of 109,000 coats.
Another local group, The Fashion Foundation, recently wrapped up another charitable initiative. Founder Amanda Munz helped to brighten the holidays for 100 students in three different Brooklyn schools by arranging for each of them to receive a complementary gift-laden backpack. Maria Cornejo to Serve as Brand Ambassador at Première Vision New York

CORNEJO’S CRYSTAL CLEAR VISION: Première Vision and the Council of Fashion Designers of America have crowned Maria Cornejo as the brand ambassador for next month’s Première Vision New York.
The designer is crafting a selection of exclusive designs for the show, putting to use textiles from the Swiss company Schoeller Textil. She said of the collaboration, “First, I am a total fabric nerd. I start always with fabric, draping. That’s the way we design the collection, designing the fabric. Secondly, the collection is going more and more toward sustainability.”
The show will run Jan. 16 and 17 at Pier 94 in New York.
The opportunity to work with Schoeller, the 2017 Fashion Smart Creation prize at the last PV Awards, was a selling point for Cornejo who also commended the company’s avant-garde reputation in this arena. The Swiss textiles maker was honored for its double-face fabric with a color-contrasting back in ECONYL yarn. “This was an amazing opportunity. There was no reservation for me to do it because it was also about spotlighting sustainability, showing that it doesn’t have to be boring,” she said. “It can be design. It doesn’t have to be granola or look beige. There are different ways to approach

EXCLUSIVE: French Label Koché to Stage Pre-Fall Show in New York

PARIS – After Paris and Tokyo, Christelle Kocher is ready to bring her rule-breaking approach to catwalk shows to New York.
The French designer will hit the Big Apple on Dec. 12 to showcase her pre-fall collection for her ready-to-wear brand Koché, alongside a capsule men’s wear collection marking the start of a new two-season partnership with The Woolmark Co.
The display, to be held at the Strand Bookstore on Broadway, will also feature the next chapter in her ongoing collaboration with Paris soccer club Paris Saint-Germain — with perhaps a celebrity footballer or two in attendance, league schedules permitting.
Known for blending streetwear influences with the kind of upscale techniques usually reserved for couture, Kocher has staged guerrilla-style shows in locations including a crowded underground station and a historic covered shopping arcade in Paris, as part of her ethos of sharing fashion with the masses.
With its slogan “18 Miles Of Books,” the Strand is one of New York’s oldest and largest independent bookstores, featured in movies including “Six Degrees of Separation,” “Julie & Julia” and “Remember Me.”
“This is the first time we are doing a show for a pre-collection,” said Kocher, adding that she has a “special relationship” with New York, where

Sarah Jessica Parker to Open New York Pop-up Shop

Sarah Jessica Parker’s SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker brand will open a New York pop-up for the holiday season.
To be located at 640 Fifth Avenue with an entrance at 52nd Street, the 1,600-square-foot shop will sell an assortment of shoes — including styles reissued from the brand’s 2014 launch collection.
SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker’s line of little black dresses and handbags will also be on sale.
The shop is to be open on Black Friday, Nov. 24, and remain open through Dec. 3. Parker is expected to periodically drop into the store to greet shoppers.
“Having a home in New York for our SJP Collection has been only a seeming fantasy since we launched our brand almost four years ago. So it is with unbridled excitement that we share the news that we have indeed found that home, right off Fifth Avenue, in the heart of Midtown,” Parker said.
The actress, producer and designer’s business partner, George Malkemus, added: ”The very idea of the ultimate New York girl opening a pop-up and, on top of it, one opposite the famous 21 Club, has me pinching myself again and again. I couldn’t be happier for my dear, dear friend and partner, Sarah Jessica Parker.”

Minnie Mouse to Attend Her First New York Fashion Week

MINNIE TAKES MANHATTAN: It’s about time: Minnie Mouse will be touching down in Manhattan next week to attend her first New York Fashion Week. Her first order of business is posing for photographs at the Empire State Building Observatory on Tuesday at 10 a.m. During her stay she plans to attend a master class at Instagram with Eva Chen, head of fashion partnerships, and visit Refinery 29 to talk trends with Annie Georgia Greenberg, fashion editor at large, video producer and host.  She may even attend a fashion week party Friday night. At press time, she had no plans to attend a fashion show, but obviously that could change once publicists get wind of her visit.
Long considered a fashion icon, Minnie has served as a muse for designers, inspiring new fashion collections and appearing in magazines and runway shows all over the world. Her classic polka-dot ensemble has been continually reimagined by the fashion industry through the decades.

Norman Oppenheimer (Richard Gere) lives a lonely life in the margins of New York City power and money. Norman strives to be everyone’s friend, but his incessant networking leads him nowhere. Norman ends up befriending a young but charismatic politician Micha Eshel (Lior Ashkenazi) at a low point in his life. Three years later, the politician becomes an influential world leader. Flush with his newfound feeling of success, Norman attempts to use Eshel’s name to leverage his biggest deal ever: a series of quid pro quo transactions linking the Prime Minister to Norman’s nephew (Michael Sheen), a rabbi (Steve Buscemi), a mogul (Harris Yulin), his assistant (Dan Stevens), and a treasury official from the Ivory Coast. Norman’s kaleidoscopic plans soon go awry, creating the potential for an international catastrophe he must struggle to prevent. The new film by Academy Award® nominated director Joseph Cedar (Footnote) is a comic and compassionate drama of a little man whose downfall is rooted in a human frailty all too easy to forgive—a need to matter.

Exclusive: Ralph Lauren’s Major Move for New York Fashion Week

Ralph Lauren is capable of doing big things. In the lead-up to a New York Fashion Week season that has been fraught with controversial defections of major talent, Lauren, a true blue American designer if there ever was one, is staying put (relatively) and stepping it up. He will stage his September runway show Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at Ralph’s Garage in Bedford, N.Y., with a private formal dinner to follow the show.
The venue is Lauren’s private garage housing his collection of rare automobiles, which will be the backdrop for the show. It’s one of the most valuable car collections in the world, featuring models such as a 1938 Bugatti Atlantic, a 1929 Bentley Blower, an orange 1996 McLaren F1 LM and multiple vintage red Ferraris. In 2011, 17 cars from Lauren’s collection were shown in an exhibition at the Musée Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
To accent the masculine/feminine nature of automobile design, for the first time Lauren will also show the Ralph Lauren Purple Label men’s wear alongside the women’s collection. The show will continue the see-now-buy-now strategy that the company started a year prior — all looks from the show will be available immediately to consumers globally.

Single father and widower Ryan Howard has zero interest in the movie being filmed in Pine Harbour or the high maintenance stars staying in the cottages at the end of his lane. He's just barely holding on to the raw remains of his life and the fantasy world being concocted around him is, as far as he's concerned, a complete waste of time and energy. The one bright light in his life is an intern on the set, and their quiet conversations at the end of the day on his back porch. Hope Creswell hates her life, too, which is entirely unfair because she’s blessed beyond measure. She’s at the top of her acting career, a Hollywood A-list star, and surrounded by people that mean well. But Ryan makes her laugh, and cry, and before she can explain her double life, he kisses her.

Barneys and Chill: Barneys New York Erects a Winter Wonderland in Its Holiday Windows

barneys windows

Madison Avenue and 61st Street is probably the last place you’d look for a 4-foot-high ice castle, but leave it to Barneys New York to subvert expectations. A glowing ice sculpture, gleaming in rainbow lights like an Antarctic Gaudí creation, occupies one of the department store’s holiday windows, which are getting their official unveiling tonight. For the berg to survive in the haute environs, Barneys was required to turn its window bay into a life-size freezer set to a temperature between -5 and 15 degrees Fahrenheit. A team from Ice Castles, the Utah-based company specializing in larger-than-life ice environments that created the  living, growing sculpture, will be on hand to tend to it as needed, though as Barneys creative director Dennis Freedman notes, “The risk is that if everything goes haywire, we’ll have a swimming pool in there.” (His solution to that emergency? “If it turns to water, well, maybe we’ll get goldfish!”)

The icy sculpture is one of four window installations—which are united by the theme “Chillin’ Out”—designed to wow the holiday crowds. There’s also a slot-car racetrack with Swarovski-studded miniature Lexuses; a serene installation by glass artist Dale Chihuly with light projections by the digital video company Christie; and another life-size freezer where Moncler Gamme Bleu–clad members of Brooklyn’s Okamoto ice-carving studio will be crafting penguins, dogs, bunnies, and other creatures out of ice.

Four windows, a visual space that spans a Manhattan block, and only one fashion placement? Where other department stores go for baroque installations filled to the brim with stocking stuffers and twinkling gowns, Freedman prefers sparse-yet-surreal environments. “It would be a huge mistake for us to be doing the kind of work we’re doing if it didn’t appeal to our customer, and I do think that the man, woman, or child who is coming to Barneys is expecting, and almost waiting, to see how creative or how original we can be,” he said.

Some initiatives surrounding this year’s installations include the introduction of Penny and Quinn, a stuffed penguin toy and 3-foot-high penguin cutout in leather jackets who will be mailed to famous Barneys fans for selfie sessions. (Barneys launched this concept last year with SQRL, a festive squirrel designed as a part of its “Baz Dazzled” windows with Baz Luhrmann.) There will also be an Instagram contest where fans can compete to have their handles carved in ice and Tidal playlists streaming in front of the windows.

That says nothing of the windows’ second lives online. In the four hours I spent watching the displays going up, the Barneys team had to wrestle phones from onlookers’ hands and physically block passersby who were eager to share the colorful action with friends. “This is a case where social media, the idea of people making their own films, has really inspired us to actually do more interesting work,” Freedman explained. “We now begin with the idea that these windows are, basically, the first iteration of something that is going to live in a very different virtual world, in a far more powerful way.”

From Tbilisi to New York and Back: Two Designer and Stylist Friends Reunited for a Hit Collection

georgian breakout

Photo: Courtesy of Tamuna Ingorokva / @ingorokvatamuna

It’s just after Tamuna Ingorokva’s highly anticipated show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tbilisi, and I’m sitting cozily on a bench with the designer and stylist Ketevan Gvaramadze. Ingorovka has just shown a refreshing series of stellar tailored looks—silk high-waisted trousers, sliced-and-diced car-wash skirts, and wispy, paneled slip dresses—and it was a hit with showgoers. The room we’re in is decked out with promotional goods; rows of attendees tote designer bags and teeter past in vertiginous heels. The whole idea of Fashion Week, no matter where you are, is always symbolic of luxury. But this room, radiating with heat and saturated with artificial light, is a blazing reminder that in this part of the world, electricity itself was once a luxury, often out of reach even for those in fashion. Living in a perpetually crisis-ridden Georgia has been a struggle for its citizens—and Gvaramadze and Ingorokva can attest to that. The two women grew up in the tumultuous Caucasus country, first under the rule of the Soviet Union, then during the Georgian Civil War between 1991 and 1993, and through the late ’90s when the country was struck with an energy shortage. During that period, people would go for hours to days without electricity—and when they did have power, it was sporadic.

Gvaramadze and Ingorokva met as children through their mothers, who are both doctors and best friends. They lost touch in the late 1990s: Gvaramadze left Georgia at 18 in 1999 after her grandfather, father, and boyfriend died. “I was extremely sad, and it was that time that we had no lights. It was a black, dead city, like a black hole,” says Gvaramadze. “I couldn’t do anything in my country.” Once she arrived in the United States, she applied for political asylum as a refugee and found work as a nanny and as a Georgian-to-Russian translator. “It was such a better life here than back home,” she says. “I ended up staying and never going back.”

Meanwhile, back home, Ingorokva studied fashion at Esmod in Munich and later at Esmod in Paris in 1999. In 2002, she showed her first collection, Spring 2003, in Tbilisi. During this period, Georgia was still experiencing an energy crisis. “We had vodka backstage so the girls wouldn’t freeze,” says Ingorokva. “It was in an old, old, rundown theater. We had oil heaters everywhere. In my atelier, we were working with oil heaters because the lighting was out there, too.” Despite failing circuits, the collection was a success: It was shown on FashionTV and, eventually, Ingorokva opened a store in Tbilisi.

Back stateside, Gvaramadze had begun waitressing at venues like the fashion industry–frequented Giorgione as well as the Gansevoort Hotel. It was at Giorgione where she became acquainted with David Bonnouvrier, founder of DNA Models, and his then-wife Siobhan Bonnouvrier, the fashion director of Allure. “One day the hotel was having a party for Allure and I was working it,” says Gvaramadze. “I saw Siobhan and she was like, ‘What are you doing here?’ And I completely joked, ‘Do you want to hire me?’” The next week at Giorgione, Gvaramadze received a call from Bonnouvrier asking her to come on set. “That was it,” she says. In 2006, Gvardazme started working as an assistant at Allure (“I would come in Converse and T-shirts”), where she would also meet the magazine’s creative director, Paul Cavaco, and eventually she was promoted to associate fashion editor, all the while still working as a waitress at the Boom Boom Room. “I didn’t even know who Anna Wintour was!” she admits. “My mom is a doctor and my dad was a landscape architect—putting clothes together wasn’t even a job and I had zero clue,” she says. “But they [Cavaco and Bonnouvrier] trained me. I don’t know why these two were so good to me and so patient with me. They taught me everything.” In 2009, Gvaramadze left her position at Allure and her gig at the Boom Boom Room to become a freelance stylist. Among the many magazines Gvaramadze now works with is Vogue, for which she styles on a regular basis.

Fast-forward a couple years more to 2011: After 12 years of not being allowed to travel back to Georgia due to the immigration process, Gvaramadze was finally able to return. There, she reconnected with Ingorovka. “For 12 years we weren’t communicating,” says Gvaramadze. “But when we started again, it was natural. Very organic.” They continued to keep in touch, mostly through a texting app. When Ingorovka was designing her latest collection, Gvaramadze would advise and make suggestions via WhatsApp. “I always had something to say!” says Gvaramadze.

Ingorokva showed that collection at Tranoï in New York, linking up again with Gvaramadze, and attracting the attention of a PR firm, whose owner liked the clothes so much he asked to keep them in the showroom. When the designer returned home to Georgia, she was invited to participate in Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tbilisi, but her pieces were thousands of miles away in New York. But that’s what friends are for: Gvaramadze, whose shoot had just been canceled, hopped on the next plane with Ingorokva’s collection and styled the show. On top of that, Ingorokva was able to book the world-famous Georgian classical musician Nikoloz Rachveli at the last minute to play a live concert with his orchestra in place of a standard runway soundtrack. “It all came together in the end!” she says.

It’s a few days after the show, and Ingorokva and I are sitting in a farm-to-table–style Georgian restaurant adorned with pretty lamps. By this time, Gvaramadze has flown back to the U.S. and is emailing me that she is going straight from the plane to One World Trade Center to style a shoot for Vogue. I relay the message to Ingorokva—we’ve just been discussing the likely prospect of her coming to New York to show her collection next season. Suddenly, the room goes dark. “It’s the ’90s again!” Ingorokva jokes. But the bulbs flicker back on, dousing the room with yellow rays, and we laugh. Turns out there is a light at the end of the tunnel after all.

Sybilla Sets New York Pop-up Store

POP APPEAL: Spanish designer Sybilla, who rose to fame in the Eighties, sure knows how to create buzz around her return to fashion. After unveiling her first collection since 1991 in Paris this March, the artisan of minimal, organic looks has already hosted temporary stores in Palma de Mallorca and Barcelona. In New York, Sybilla is set to open a pop-up outpost at 25 Mercer Street from Oct. 14 to 25.
The designer’s comeback collection for fall was picked up by a total of seven U.S. stores, including Blake in Chicago, If in New York and Mameg in Los Angeles, and a spokesman for the label said department stores could also be on the agenda for the colorful spring collection, which is showing in Paris until Oct. 5.

Matt McGorry, Robbie Rogers Step Out for To Boot New York in L.A.

YOUNG TURKS: Some Millennials are so busy that they don’t have time to eat. That was the case with soccer player Robbie Rogers and actor Matt McGorry on Thursday night, when they dashed from To Boot New York’s dinner at Bar Marmont in West Hollywood before they could feast on caprese salad, crispy cauliflower, herb-roasted chicken and grilled skirt steak with shoe designer Adam Derrick, actor David Bernon, cycling entrepreneur Lorenzo Martone, and stylists Sophie Lopez and Michael Cioffoletti.
For Rogers, clad in a jean jacket embroidered with gold stars, his excuse was an early practice on Friday morning with the LA Galaxy.
McGorry — who’s been busy dancing in a mullet and mustache in Peking Duk’s new music video and producing his first movie, “Stealing Mona,” which he described as “a comedy about a bunch of idiots who are low-level thugs and they decide to steal the ‘Mona Lisa’” — rushed to the set of “How to Get Away with Murder.” Even during the cocktail hour, he tweeted to his 368,000 fans. Now that he stands on a platform built through his work on the hit ABC drama and Netflix’s “Orange Is the New Black,” McGorry is pushing for social change.

Syphilis Alert for New York State

Earlier this month the New York State Department of Health, AIDS Institute sent Apicha Community Health Center a memo asking us to pass along information regarding New York States continued increases in syphilis.

As has been reported by Huffington Post previously, new cases of syphilis are increasing in New York State. Some new data has come out that shows in 2013 and 14 there was a 13 percent increase in New York City and a 44 percent increase in Upstate New York. In many Central New York and Capital District counties, the number of cases has more than doubled during this period.

Most of the case are seen in New York City and the surrounding counties. We’re seeing the most cases among males, especially gay men and men who have sex with men.

What does this mean for you?
All men in New York State need to be aware of the risk behaviors, signs, and symptoms of syphilis.

Syphilis is transmitted through direct contact with a syphilis sore during anal or oral sex. In men, sores may be found on the penis, anus, in the rectum, scrotum, perianal skin, tongue, on the lips, or in the mouth.

Having unprotected sex, multiple partners, or a new sex partner can all increase the risk of syphilis infection, as well as other STDs and HIV.

Syphilis symptoms include, in the first stage, a painless sore at the infection site (usually genitals, can also be around the areas listed above) that disappears. After that a rash, usually on the hands and feet–this is known as secondary syphilis. These symptoms will go away on their own but the infection is still in the body. Some people who are infected never show these symptoms at all, which is why it’s important everyone get tested.

Syphilis increases your risk of getting HIV if you are exposed. Using condoms does reduce the risk of infection through anal sex. Risk for oral exposure is also reduced if you use condoms during oral sex. If you are serosorting or using pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV, remember that these strategies do not protect against syphilis and other STDs.

Once detected, syphilis is easy to treat with a penicillin injection. Left untreated it can cause serious and permanent problems including heart problems, dementia, blindness, or death.

What should you do?
If you live in New York City ask your medical provider to tested you for Syphilis or visit one of New York City’s STD Clinics. If you do not have a medical provider, make an appointment with Apicha Community Health Center for nonjudgmental, individualized primary care.

If you don’t live in New York City, visit www.findSTDtest.com to find a syphilis testing location near you

New York Fashion Week: Logistics Wreak Havoc

NEW YORK — “Anybody who thinks that the logistics weren’t a problem is Helen Keller,” said Fern Mallis, former queen of New York Fashion Week, discussing the logistical nightmares of the latest round of shows just ended here.
Mallis was only one of the scores of people who grumbled through the week which, while creatively strong, forced buyers, editors, photographers, stylists, celebrities and assorted hangers-on to trek uptown, downtown and all around to get to the shows. Mallis said she put 420 miles on her car “just going to shows, and going uptown, downtown and crosstown.” If distances weren’t enough of a problem, traffic during the week seemed particularly horrendous, forcing people to leave their offices at least an hour before a show was due to start – and then spend another hour or more getting back.
“I spent more time in a cab than at the shows. Something’s got to be done,” said Glenda Bailey, editor in chief of Harper’s Bazaar.
Susan Sokol, president of Susan Sokol Consultancy, agreed. “I spent a fortune on Uber and car services. It was so hard getting around….I appreciate that designers want to have their own individual venues, but there was so much traffic and it was

What It’s Like to Be a Top Manicurist At New York Fashion Week

Nail art still remains one of New York Fashion Week’s biggest beauty
trends—and no one makes a bigger impact on that trend than manicurist Madeline Poole. The global color ambassador for Sally Hansen creates the chicest nail art on the block whether she’s working with glitter, stripes, sequins, or negative space, and her quirky-chic aesthetic has made her a backstage favorite of designers like Prabal Gurung and Phillip Lim. This season, we asked Poole to show us a glimpse of her whirlwind week.

Suno to Introduce Footwear During New York Fashion Week

Suno is the latest ready-to-wear brand to get bit by the accessories bug.
On Wednesday, designers Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty will make their first foray into footwear at the runway show for their spring collection. “We wanted to create a city shoe that felt inspired yet functional — playful, but still easy,” Beatty said. “Like our clothes, we wanted the shoes to carry you through the day — stylishly and comfortably. Not too dainty, not too pointy, not too fierce, but somehow making just the right statement.” The new category comes after eleven seasons of collaborations with Nicholas Kirkwood for the brand’s runway show.
The collection will consist of five styles, including heels, flats and printed sneakers. Each style — all done in leather — will be shown in multiple colorways, with the sneakers done in two new Suno prints and three colors. The Italian-produced shoes will later be available at sunony.com, with other retailers to be confirmed, with price points ranging from $ 395 to $ 695.

How Eckhaus Latta Selected New York Fashion Week’s Coolest Cast

eckhaus latta casting

Striking the right balance with casting is a difficult thing to do, but season after season, Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta of Eckhaus Latta and their eclectic lineup of muses and traditional models manage to nail it. This season included art scene fixtures like Juliana Huxtable and musicians like Dev Hynes, and above all there was the sense that the wearer is as important as the garment itself. Backstage at the Spring show, seasoned modeling vets like Cole Mohr and Zhenya Katava mingled with newcomers like Latta’s godfather Bart and indie actress India Salvor Menuez. The mix of ages, races, genders, and careers paths provided a welcome message of inclusive universality. We caught up with the designers—who cast the show themselves—to hear a bit about their casting process, as well as the benefits to filling their runway with friends, family, and other “nodels,” their term for those they have coaxed onto the catwalk.

What was the mood you were trying to create with this casting?
MIKE ECKHAUS: It’s always this kind of community that we like to build on—whether it’s really close friends, people we admire, or people who are doing work that we appreciate—that always helps to determine the casting structure. We’ve always liked the combination of working with industry models and “nodels”—friends and peers. I think it creates a more dynamic texture and quality to the clothing.

ZOE LATTA: It also helps to see the clothing on bodies and people who feel really confident and wear clothing really well, but it’s not about a singular ideal of body type. It really goes back to the wearer and what they bring to each look.

Are there any unexpected benefits to having non-models in the mix?
ME: Having both models and nodels allows everyone to stand out and be highlighted in their own right. It doesn’t feel like “here’s the same idea” over and over again. The models pop, the nodels pop, and it feels very whole.

Often your shows involve a performance aspect, but this season you went for a straightforward show. Why is that?
ZL: We were so honored to be able to use this space [Ralph Pucci International], and we worked hard on this collection, so we were excited to see the accessories and all the details. We thought adding more wouldn’t do anything for the collection, so we wanted to focus on the clothes.

Many of the people you’ve featured on Eckhaus’s runway—Hari Nef, Willy Cartier, et cetera—have gone on to big things. Who from this season should we be looking out for?
ZL: It’s funny, we never cast based on who we think will do well. This cast includes my godfather, some older friends from Los Angeles—we don’t choose based on who will become well known. As for who to watch, I would say the entire cast. Each of them brings something special.

ME: It’s interesting to see all of our careers growing together—now some of the nodels have to call their agents before they do the show, which is fun. Seeing them succeed is great. Suddenly we’re speaking with the biggest agents at Ford and IMG about people we’ve known for years.

Everything That Happened on Day Four of New York Fashion Week

hanne gaby odiele sweatshirt

From the front row with David Beckham to the gardens of Opening Ceremony, we covered a lot of ground on Day Four of New York Fashion Week. Get all the essential information from the day, below.

1. The day started at Victoria Beckham’s show, where David and Brooklyn Beckham sat front row and breezy, surf-inspired separates came down the catwalk.

2. But the focus wasn’t only on Victoria Beckham’s runway looks, the designer also pulled off quite the wardrobe change during the day too.

3. Top models of the world united at Diane von Furstenberg. We’re talking Karlie, Jourdan, Gigi, Bella, Kendall, and more women so famous, they only need one name.

4.  Diane von Furstenberg has only to look in the mirror to find a beauty muse—models sported a look much like Von Furstenberg’s own.

5. Streetwear? Au contraire. Public School’s new muse is more high priestess than high punk.

6. Prabal Gurung’s show started off with singing monks. The moment of peacefulness was for Nepal, Gurung’s homeland struck with a damaging earthquake earlier this year.

7. Tired of seeing fashion shows in just two dimensions online? Gurung has a solution for that: 360-degree photography.

8. It’s business in the front, party in the back: Hood By Air’s derriere-revealing jumpsuit.

9. Model Hanne Gaby Odiele brought feminism to the streets with her Acne Studios sweater.

10. The day closed out with a dance performance at Opening Ceremony, inspired by the dance costumes Frank Lloyd Wright designed for his third wife.

MONCLER’S SNAPSHOT: Sure, sure everybody’s a photographer in these iPhone-wielding days, but at Moncler’s party Thursday night that really seemed to be the case.

Leonard Lauder Throws Open House for New York Fashion Week

Leonard Lauder and his bride threw a party marking the beginning of New York Fashion Week — and everybody came. Everyone in the magazine business, that is.
Held at the Fifth Avenue residence Lauder shares with his wife of eight months, Judith Glickman Lauder, the soiree drew Hearst’s David Carey and Michael Clinton, Condé Nast’s Bob Sauerberg, Allure’s Linda Wells, Harper’s Bazaar’s Glenda Bailey and Kendall Jenner (in Tom Ford, natch), to name just a few.
“Why are we doing this?” Leonard Lauder intoned from the terrace staircase. “We love New York! For those of you that think you want to move to Jersey City — forget it. New York is the center of the world and we’re glad to have you here.” In addition to cocktails on the Lauders’ two-tiered terrace, representatives of the New York City Landmarks Conservancy were available to point out everything from the residence where “Rosemary’s Baby” was filmed to the field where William and Gary Lauder played soccer, through powerful telescopes. The evening also included a private showing of Lauder’s extensive Cubist collection, which is willed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Givenchy Opening to Public for New York Show

Get ready for Givenchy’s public offering. No, not that kind, but another kind — one that could be a one-time wonder or could dramatically change the fashion show system for the long haul.
When Riccardo Tisci shows his Givenchy collection in New York on Sept. 11, members of the general public will make up a huge portion of his audience. Twelve hundred “real people” — mostly non-industry, non-celebrity civilians (no proof of Givenchy purchase required) as well as a cadre of students and faculty from local fashion schools — will attend, along with the usual show-going industry suspects.
Givenchy is working closely with the City of New York on this public-audience project. The house will allot most of the tickets — 820 of them — on a first-come/first-served basis to registrants at a Web site set up in partnership with nycgo.com, the City’s marketing office.
The Web site address will be released Tuesday Sept. 1 at 10 a.m. via the social media outlets of Givenchy, NYCgo, the CFDA and KCD, and will open to potential recipients at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Tickets will be available for pickup in advance of the show. A block of 280 tickets has been set aside for students

New York Fashion Week Model Essentials: Accessories First

headscarf

Though model-off-duty style encompasses a variety of trends (and personal interpretations), certain items have become so prevalent that they can be found within the wardrobes of nearly every model worth her Instagram following—from fresh faces to superstars. With leggy beauties from around the world currently descending on New York for the beginning of fashion month, these standards are certain to become even more ubiquitous in the coming weeks. From oversize shades perfect for blocking out paparazzi flashbulbs to sneakers so luxe the idea of playing sports in them seems like sacrilege, these are the model-approved essentials for New York Fashion Week—making model-spotting (or dressing the part) that much easier.

Wide-Brimmed Hats

A summertime staple for any self-respecting street style subject, a wide-brimmed hat can elevate even the most basic ensemble. Often favored by girls whose style skews bohemian, the chapeau has been especially popular this summer—appearing on everyone from Lily Aldridge to Jourdan Dunn.

Retro Sunglasses

While normal shades can render the wearer anonymous, models favor standout styles that command attention—cat-eyes, oversize tortoiseshell frames, and mirrored aviators abound.

Luxury Trainers

A classic pair of Stan Smiths is nice, but lately models have stepped up their shoe game, reaching for limited-edition, customized, and exclusive shoes. Joan Smalls’s pristine Air Force 1s and Jasmine Sanders’s Reeboks by way of Melody Ehsani set the standard.

Chokers

Nothing says offbeat muse with a vague Victorian-by-way-of-the-nineties like a black ribbon choker. With the youngest generation of models embracing all things retro (however recently), the return of the choker was inevitable.

Head Scarves and Wraps

Colorful head scarves have become de rigueur for bad hair days and beyond. More than simply cover-ups, the colorful, richly patterned accessories can serve to represent a girl’s heritage—as in the case of Angolan Maria Borges, who sported multiple head scarves off-duty during her country’s Fashion Week.

It Bags

It bags come and go, but you can always expect one to show up on the shoulder of a top model. While girls often receive their purses as designer gifts, many are more than willing to spend their hard-earned cash on the latest handbag du jour, and this season, found their favorites in the Gucci Dionysus and Chloé Drew bags.

BIGGER AND BETTER: Kia Style360 has changes in store for the upcoming New York Fashion Week. The 11-year-old platform, which is known for hosting celebrity fashion shows and presentations, landed its first title sponsor, Kia Motors, along with a new media partner, Us Weekly; Glamour held the title last year following Elle magazine’s nine-year run in the position.

Comme des Garçons Pocket Shop Opens in New York

HOW CONVENIENT: Pocket, Rei Kawakubo‘s answer to the bodega, lands in New York City today at 112 10th Avenue. Comme des Garçons said it likens the Pocket concept, which launched in Tokyo department stores in 2007, to a modern-day convenience store for “pocket-sized items that you don’t have to think about too much and can buy on a whim.” That means mostly the Play, Wallets and Parfum collections.
Adrian Joffe, president of Comme des Garçons International, said the concept “celebrates the ease, efficiency and affordability of a convenience store.”
This is the first freestanding Pocket in the United States. There are now 30 Pocket shops worldwide in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Thailand, as well as Singapore, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris and Melbourne. The company’s Dover Street Market stores also have dedicated Pocket spaces, as does its Comme des Garçons store in Chelsea.

Exclusive! IMG Is Growing New York Fashion Week Presence With New HQ

IMG fashion week

IMG’s expanded reach over New York Fashion Week isn’t limited to its show spaces (this season’s venues include Moynihan Station and Skylight Clarkson Sq), its recent acquisition of Made Fashion Week, or the sleek black-and-white logo that will appear on invites and the like. IMG is also launching NYFW HQ, a programming space to be located at 451 West Fourteenth Street, the south side of the building that houses Milk Studios.

To those who think it’ll serve as a lounge for editors and buyers to rest their stilettoed feet between shows, think again. HQ will showcase art installations, talk series, and additional events from September 11 to September 16. Some happenings will be open to the public, others will require IMG’s NYFW credentials, and several will be invitation-only. “Typically these sorts of events are happening around us, but no one has really corralled everything into one hub and had a broader, overarching conversation about what’s happening in fashion,” says IMG’s Leslie Russo. “We wanted to be the ones to introduce that conversation during the week.”

It’s bound to be a lively one. Some shows will be live-streamed and rebroadcast from the windows of HQ, and they’re expecting large crowds to gather on the sidewalk to watch. No invite necessary. Can’t make it? IMG will be promoting its programming on its @nyfw social channels and on nyfw.com.

Back-to-School Style: New York City vs. Los Angeles

We had a feeling that teenagers who live on opposite coasts might just rock a slightly different back-to-school style. So we talked to 14 high school students — seven in New York City and seven in Los Angeles — about their overall approach to fashion, where they shop and what they plan to wear when they return to the classroom in the coming weeks. And then we dressed them in an outfit of their choosing from a selection curated by our stylists on both coasts and photographed them on the streets of Williamsburg, N.Y., and West L.A.
A touch of downtown cool — and in some cases, a bit of preppy polish — and always casual. That was the consensus of the teens in the greater New York City area when asked to describe their respective styles at the Williamsburg photo shoot. Ranging in age from 15 to 18, they showed up in their own outfits — the boys in khakis and polos, the girls in a mix of skinny jeans or shorts with T-shirts and dresses — before being styled in b-t-s looks that suited their fashion preferences.
The students attend a mix of public, private and performing arts high schools.

Barneys: Made in New York

Made in New York. It’s a simple, elegant phrase that’s becoming a loaded fashion statement as you read this. There’s marketing. There’s co-branding. There’s money, and politics. There are good intentions. But, first, there are clothes.
The hook for this story is a new Barneys New York capsule collection titled Made in New York for which the retailer asked seven of its top designers to produce items completely in New York City to support the beleaguered local manufacturing community. The collection goes in stores next week — all nine flagships and five of the smaller stores — with the full flex of Barneys’ display muscle behind it: It will get all of the Madison Avenue windows during New York Fashion Week, a grand gesture. To illustrate the concept, each window will house a sculptural dis- play of 200 two-foot needles made by the Barneys creative team.
Altuzarra, Thom Browne, The Row, Proenza Schouler, R13, Rag & Bone and Narciso Rodriguez made pieces for the collection, an assembly of reimagined greatest hits from each label. A seductive black Chantilly lace and chiffon dress from Altuzarra; a fitted dress from Proenza Schouler; a lean scuba dress from Rodriguez; a mannish tailored coat from Rag

Karen Kaiser and Nicolas Kern’s Wedding in Upstate New York

karen kaiser wedding

Stylist Karen Kaiser and photographer Nicolas Kern’s story is a Fashion Week fairy tale. The two met during a magazine launch party in New York in 2009: “We had a brief tête-à-tête over Japanese culture and food, and the rest is history,” remembers Karen.

The couple dated for almost five years before the proposal. “Nicolas asked me to marry him very unexpectedly one afternoon just before we were about to leave to spend the weekend with some dear friends,” says Karen. “He had had the ring for quite some time, apparently, and waited for a moment that felt special and intimate. I was overtaken by tears of joy.”

During the early stages of the planning process, Karen and Nicolas realized a key goal of theirs was that the celebration give their families a chance to really get to know each other. With this in mind, they settled on the Southwood Estate in Germantown, New York, as the venue, a place they had visited together during their courtship and fallen in love with. “The estate offers many rooms, so our families were able to stay on the premises,” explains Karen. “And it was great to see everyone get together and to share so many special moments.” Additionally, the setting felt symbolic in that it somehow evoked home for both of them, reminding Nicolas of his origins in Austria on the Wörthersee and Karen of the landscape in Indiana.

Ever the stylist, Karen drew upon two specific images for her wedding look. “One was from a 1968 Vogue,” she says. “It was a photo of a wedding cape designed by Cristóbal Balenciaga and photographed by David Bailey. After registering that image, I attended Alexander Wang’s spring 2015 Balenciaga show in Paris, where a white cape walked down the runway. As soon as I saw it, I was certain I had to have it for my wedding day.”

The second image was a photo of the wedding dress worn by style icon Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. “To find the perfect balance, I asked my very dear friend Deborah Milner to design a timeless dress with a modern sensibility,” says Karen. “She has consulted with the likes of Isabella Blow, Philip Treacy, Daphne Guinness, Amanda Harlech, and others including Alexander McQueen, where she continues to work with Sarah Burton on couture. Between my inspirations and her creativity and incredible craftsmanship, we arrived at the final piece. The cut, the fit, and the feeling of the heavy crepe fabric still amazes me today, and I cannot thank Deborah enough.”

To top off Karen’s vision, Treacy graciously customized her veil piece. “I wanted something very minimalistic to echo the shape of the couture pockets on the Balenciaga cape,” explains Karen. “When Philip heard that we were having the ceremony in a church, he added crystals to the piece. They glimmered in the light as I walked down the aisle, adding an air of magic.”

Karen’s shoes were beige leather pointed-toe Altuzarra slingback pumps with a small bow for a chic, feminine feeling. She paired the shoes with toes painted in Essie’s Jazz nail color, which was recommended to her by Vogue.com’s Beauty Director Catherine Piercy.

“My husband had gone with his instincts and chosen a pavé Repossi ring for the proposal,” says Karen. “I love Gaia’s restrained elegance, and therefore found it suiting to accessorize my wedding look with more pieces from her collections—including a Berbère ear cuff in rose gold with pavé diamonds and two rings from the Antifer collection, also in rose gold with full pavé diamonds.”

Karen called upon friends David Adams (colorist), Peter Gray (hairstylist), and Maud Laceppe (makeup artist) to do her hair and makeup on the big day. “Not only have we known each other for years and collaborated on many projects, but Peter, Maud, and I have worked on several seasons of Gabriele Colangelo’s show in Milan,” says Karen.

The couple had a Catholic wedding mass in St. Mary’s Church in Hudson, New York, accompanied by an organ, a trumpet, and a violin. “Nicolas and I each have one sibling, whom we chose as our witnesses,” says Karen. “I entered the church preceded by five flower girls and two ring bearers. And then after the ceremony, our ‘getaway’ car was a red Triumph. The car perfectly fit the part, since the wedding reception alluded to the French bohemian sensibility of Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin.”

The cocktail hour took place around the estate’s pool with a few Balinese antique blankets and pillows that friends Scott Studenberg and John Targon of Baja East made for the couple. The Bailsmen added their French swing tunes, and with the outdoor location and minimal decoration, it was a leisurely experience where everyone mingled and enjoyed themselves. “It was important to us that everything felt unpresumptuous,” says Karen.

For food, the couple chose a farm-to-table concept catered by Fire Roasted Catering of Great Barrington, Massachusetts, as they both love organic and local produce. At dinner, a prepared pig on a spit, salt-crusted sea bass, and roasted vegetables over open fires were served.

After dinner, Nicolas’s father gave a brief toast and introduced the couple’s first dance, which was to “Le Vent Nous Portera” by Noir Désir. “This was an unforgettable magical moment,” remembers Karen. Then, the couple’s friend Alvise Marino heated up the dance floor playing classics from the sixties and then more modern music as the night went on.

The reception ended after hours by the pool with swimming and more dancing under the stars.
